Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe Revealed

August 31st, 2010

Marking the 60th anniversary of the legendary Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in Carmel, California, British luxury carmaker Rolls Royce presented in the UK the special edition Phantom Drophead Coupe, a model built to be sold in minutes, as the carmaker says. The name of the buyer or the price paid for the car were not announced.

The unique model, painted in Stillwater Blue (apparently in honor of the Stillwater Cove on the Monterey Peninsula), brings only visual changes to the regular production model. And that’s about it for the exterior modifications.

On the inside, the model features navy blue soft top lined with cashmere. The upholstery is in Creme Light, while interior wood fittings are composed of a cross-banded Santos Pallisander veneer contrasted with a silver pinstripe inlay.

Being a Rolls, the car offers all the perks other vehicles usually don’t afford to offer. The Drophead comes complete with champagne service set with crystal flutes, teak covered picnic deck and a refrigerated cabinet, hidden under the luggage compartment floor.

To further distinguish the vehicle as a one-off example (yes, we know, each Rolls is in fact a one-off), the Goodwood manufacturer fitted the Phantom Drophead Coupe with enamelled plaque on the dash, Concours logos on the tread plates and embroidery on each seat.

“This 60th Anniversary Special Edition is the embodiment of our Bespoke capabilities in Goodwood,” said Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Muller-Otvos,

“It demonstrates the ability of our designers and artisans to create something absolutely appropriate for an occasion and ultimately, something exceptional to cherish forever.”

V7 is based around the acclaimed adjustable torque, motorized-platter design from Numark’s NS7 and delivers a host of professional features including real vinyl and a slipmat that analog turntablists will love, plus turntable control at ten times the resolution of standard MIDI, mouse-less library navigation, and Strip Search virtual-needle drop. V7’s link function enables you to combine two V7s with your choice of any mixer and your Mac or PC for a completely customizable, totally seamless performance environment. V7 includes a professional 24-bit audio interface and contains premium faders, knobs, and buttons including controls for selecting tracks and blending audio effects in the included Serato ITCH software. PERFECT FEEL Forget your experiences with other controllers. V7 has a seven-inch, motorized, high-torque aluminum turntable platter. The turntable features modern and classic settings that alter the feel to model the feel you prefer. A seven-inch, legit vinyl record with 45RPM adapter sits on a real slipmat. There’s no simulation here – V7 is the real deal. We used premium, rugged, rubberized buttons and knobs for an unquestionably high-quality feel. Its recognizable, professional appearance is supported by clean design in matte and glossy black. V7 is housed in a heavy-gauge, industrial-strength metal casing that is ready for the torture of travel. PROFESSIONAL SETUP Forget the mouse. Forget the keyboard. V7 renders software perfectly simple to operate, with its click knob and large, backlit buttons navigating though your music library. You’ll spend less time looking at the screen and more time enjoying performing thanks to the visual feedback you get from V7’s extensive LEDs and hands-on controls. Grab a pair of V7s and your favorite mixer, such as DXM PRO, and you’re ready to rock. V7 has right and left deck audio outputs to connect directly to your mixer. To complete your system, you can add our LAPTOP STAND to elevate your computer to comfortable height. Our custom 7-INCH COLOR VINYL records enable you to customize the look of V7 with eye-catching, translucent looks. V7 is the first digital DJ system that enables two DJs to transition or play at the same time, on the same computer-based setup. That means that, with a pair of V7s, you can play your set, and continue spinning while the next DJ plugs into the other V7, mixes in with you, and allows you to unplug. The music never stops and the transition is seamless. With a four-channel mixer, two DJs can play side-by-side with two computers using just a pair of V7s. It’s easy to assign Master and virtual-deck designations using V7?s intuitive deck-select controls. PRECISION CONTROL V7 sends control information over USB at more than ten times the standard MIDI rate. This innovative communication technique yields extremely high-precision, low-latency control. There’s nothing like dropping the needle on a record for quickly locating a point in the track. We took that idea and developed our own modern take on it with Strip Search, the unique virtual-needle-drop touch strip. You can locate a point instantly within the track using the on-screen waveform and Strip Search. Five hot-cue-assign buttons on each deck digitally mark your cues on the track. These marker points are recallable in ITCH, and you can even load Scratch LIVE cue points in ITCH. We developed an extensive loop-controls section for creative remix capabilities. You can choose between manual and auto-loop functions and an automatic BPM analyzer further assists loop makers. Creating automatic smart loops of any measure length is a breeze, and you can mutilate and modify to your heart’s content with a variety of controls such as Doubling, Halving, Shift, and manual controls. Multiple loop banks make V7 a great choice for scratch and club DJs alike. Beat matching is straight ahead with 100mm, smooth, stiff pitch sliders and plus and minus buttons, by popular request, for bending. There’s a zero-point LED, so it’s easy to know when you’re in the middle. AUDIO QUALITY We took extraordinary care in selecting the components of the audio signal chain. V7 contains a multichannel, high-resolution 24-bit USB digital-audio interface. The high-definition analog audio output features a minimized circuit path with containing only one audiophile-grade bipolar capacitor. This optimized design maximizes phase coherence, ensuring that audio is tight and punchy. SERATO ITCH SOFTWARE V7 comes with Serato ITCH. For one-to-one communication, each knob, button, and control on V7 corresponds exactly to that function in the software. Serato ITCH is already familiar if you use Scratch LIVE. ITCH builds on Scratch LIVE and adds some key, new features. ITCH makes timecode a thing of the past, so you won’t need to worry about needles skipping or vinyl wearing out. You can load your Scratch LIVE crates, loops, presets, and cue points seamlessly in ITCH. V7 also works with most other compatible MIDI DJ software and supports your iTunes library. With natural vinyl feel, precise control, pristine sound, custom flexibility, advanced performance, and rock solid design, the turntable has evolved. Meet V7. Serato™ is a trademark of Serato Audio Research. iTunes is a trademark of Apple Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries. Manhunt Daily – Exclusive Interview with Kimberley Locke

August 31st, 2010

Ever since Kimberley Locke auditioned for American Idol with Judy Garland‘s “Over The Rainbow”, we knew she was a woman after our hearts. And it seems that our hunch wasn’t completely off base! The incredibly talented vocalist has emerged as a huge supporter of the gay community. Heck, you may have even seen her performing at your local Pride parade…

In fact, Kimberley loves the gays so much that she agreed to do an interview with Manhunt Daily! We chatted about everything from her romantic life to her latest dance hit “Strobelight”. Long story short? We can’t get enough of this fabulous woman! Click through to read, and you’ll understand why.

To check out our interview with Kimberley Locke, follow the JUMP:

So no lie–I was walking through a mall the other day, and “8th World Wonder” was playing over the speakers. Are you surprised by the direction your career’s taken since then?

I am very surprised. I think that when I set out on this journey, I didn’t know what to expect. I just tried to keep an open mind and stay open to all the possibilities. I still try to maintain that, because this business is very random. Sometimes there is no rhyme or reason as to how things come about.

We read that the deal you’ve singed with Randy Jackson’s Dream Merchant 21 record label is a “singles only” agreement. Does that mean we won’t ever be hearing another album from you?

No, not at all. The success of the first few singles will determine if there will be a full album.

Do you think the music industry would benefit from more artists taking a similar approach?

Possibly. I think the consumer is doing it already. They download the singles that they want from an album as opposed to getting the whole thing. I think this is a great way to introduce an artist and their music by giving a little at a time. It gives the consumer something to look forward to.

Let’s talk about “Strobelight”. This is your first straight-up, original dance song, right?

Yes, it is! I am very proud of that. “Strobelight” is a fun dance song for the summer. It has been a great success for me and something fresh for me and my fans.

Did your decision to head into dance-oriented territory have anything to do with your fanbase in the gay community?

OF COURSE! My gay fanbase is the reason for my dance success, and that can not be overlooked. They love me in this genre. That’s another reason why I wanted to do an original dance song. I had never done that and I knew it was time to give them something different.

Speaking of the gay community, you’ve performed at a pride event or two. Tell us about a funny or enlightening experience at one of these events.

Oh, there have been plenty! At one pride, a drag queen gave me her dress. My mom was like, “Who’s dress? She’s one big woman!” Another time, I almost got pulled off the stage… Not good! In Seattle this year, there was a Kimberley Locke drag show! Also, I met the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and I love them (Brian!). I have had so many great Pride experiences, Chicago and LA Pride being among them. In a few weeks, I’m off to Southern Decadence and Delaware Pride. I have the most fun with the Boys!

What’s one of your favorite songs to perform live? Why?

“Strobelight” is my new favorite. I love to watch the crowd’s reaction. It’s new, so they start out listening, and by the end everyone is dancing and having a great time. Of course, “8th World Wonder” is an all time favorite. I love to hear the fans sing it back to me. That is the ultimate feeling.

You very publicly showcased your weight loss struggle on Celebrity Fit Club. What inspiring words do you have to say to folks who are trying to shed a few pounds?

One day at a time… Be nice to yourself and your body. If you want to lose it and keep it off, do it the healthy way.

Of course, you were also thrown into the spotlight for your relationship with trainer Harvey Walden IV. We hate to bring up such a personal topic, but have you been dating since then?

I’m currently dating someone that I went to grade school with. We’ve known one another for twenty years. WOW!

Drastic topic change! You’ve done a good amount of charity work in raising awareness of HIV/AIDS and breast cancer. Tell us about a particularly moving moment within your work.

There have been so many that I can’t limit it to one! The thing I’m most excited about right now is a contest that we hosted for Camp Heartland. In appreciation of fan’s donations, I’m about to get the chance to make a personal phone call to a fan to thank them for supporting our worthy cause!

Last question–what can we expect to hear and see from Kimberly Locke in the next couple of months? Will there be another single on the way?

There certainly will be. More info coming soon!

Readers' Choice 2010: And the winners are …

August 31st, 2010

? Click here to see all photos. (Click on pictures to enlarge.)

Enough with celebrity news, already. How about shining some light on the stars in our local community, the people who run the shops and provide the services that add pleasure and quality to our lives?

That what participants in The Almanac’s 2010 Readers’ Choice poll decided to do by voting for their favorite restaurants, shops and services.

And the winners are

BOUTIQUEBoutique 4 wins the nod from Readers’ Choice voters for favorite boutique. Tamara Michel, co-owner with her sister Julie, says the shop offers timeless and classic clothing for women, “styles that never go out of style.” Boutique 4 also sells bath and body products, as well as accessories and gifts. 809 Santa Cruz Ave., Menlo Park; 322-8444.

FURNITURE, HOME DECOR & FURNISHINGSFlegels takes home the award for Furniture and Home Decor. This is the 18th consecutive year that Flegels has won a Readers’ Choice award. Brian Flegel attributes its success, in part, to giving customers something free. In this case, it is one of their nine interior designers who will work to find the correct accent piece or a full suite of furnishings at no additional cost. Flegels’ high-end furniture is backed by a full-service plan, which includes repair, refinishing and upholstery. On Sept. 2, Flegels will preview its newest line of Matsuoka furniture from Japan. These pieces feature exotic and rare woods. Flegels is the only West Coast distributor. Otherwise, you would have to go to Berlin, Miami, Taipei or New York. 870 Santa Cruz Ave., Menlo Park; 326-9661.

CAFE, PLACE TO MEET PEOPLE, INDEPENDENT COFFEE/TEA HOUSECafe Borrone’s European-style plaza and art-covered walls are a good choice, when, to quote their website, “Europe is too far to go for lunch.” Loyal fans also love the expanded dinner menu and “coffee that exceeds expectations,” according to assistant general manager Jeffrey Frey. Readers certainly agree, having again named family-owned Cafe Borrone as the best cafe and the best place to meet people. Readers also named the cafe the best independent coffee/tea house. 1010 El Camino Real #110, Menlo Park; 327-0830.

CASUAL DININGThough many restaurants take pains to achieve a particular ambiance, Buck’s of Woodside does it without hardly trying. Wait, without trying hard. Buck’s is simply a “giant toybox full of mad people,” says owner Jamis MacNiven, who characterizes the restaurant’s appearance as his dreamscape. A 20-foot carved wooden fish outside the door, a buffalo’s head on the wall, airplanes dangling from the ceiling, and lots of toys, pictures and gadgets adorn the walls. With a quirky sense of humor and commitment to creating a themeless “wacky Americana” atmosphere, the restaurant deliberately avoids trends, he says. “We strive to do the same thing today as yesterday,” observes Mr. MacNiven. 3062 Woodside Road, Woodside; 851-8010

GROCERY STORE, BUTCHERFor years, Draeger’s has won the hearts and taste buds of Readers’ Choice voters for years, and 2010 is no exception. The market boasts a vast selection, including products from all over the world. Customers flock to the store for everything from standard fare to specialty products. The meat section, where the knowledgeable staff is available to answer questions, specializes in aged Midwestern beef, but also offers a large selection of other varieties. Although it’s a local family-run business, Draeger’s is well known throughout the area. 1010 University Dr., Menlo Park; 324-7733

BOOKSTORE, GREEN BUSINESSKepler’s Books and Magazines is a perennial favorite of Readers’ Choice voters — and the community at large — due to its author events, knowledgeable staff, and wide variety of books, magazines and gifts. Founded in 1955, the store is a local institution. When it comes to hiring, Kepler’s takes a special approach. “We don’t hire cashiers. We hire readers,” says staff leader Nancy Salmon. Kepler’s has well over 200 registered book clubs and even a book club aisle. Among the deals: 20 percent off all New York Times bestseller’s everyday. 1010 El Camino Real, Menlo Park; 324-4321.

STATIONERY STOREReaders’ Choice voters again named Village Stationers best stationery store for its selection of paper goods, office supplies, gifts, and greeting cards, as well as for the knowledge and personal service of its staff. The independent and family owned Village Stationers is one of the last true stationery stores in this area. Its longevity rivals that of the love story in “The Notebook.” 719 Santa Cruz Ave., Menlo Park; 321-6920.

JEWELRY STOREYou don’t have to be Tony Soprano to recognize the quality of the bling at Hirzel Fine Jewelers. Nor do you have to be a single lady to come to Hirzel to put a ring on it. Police should not engage in partisan politics-Chief Justice

August 31st, 2010

CHIEF Justice Ernest Sakala has urged police officers to be loyal to the Government of the day and avoid engaging in partisan politics.

Mr Justice Sakala has also urged the police to desist from detaining suspects for longer periods because that is a violation of human rights and a cost to the Government.

He said when he officiated at a pass-out of 443 mobile police officers at Kamfinsa School of Public Order Maintenance Unit in Kitwe yesterday that the police should strive to maintain high standards acceptable to the public.

“The nation seems to be ready and engaging itself for next year’s tripartite elections and you are required to enhance and intensify professional and impartial policing,” Mr Justice Sakala said.

He said the police should seek to reverse the trend of being blamed for any electoral violence in the country.

Mr Justice Sakala said Zambia’s continued peaceful environment should be upheld by improved policing strategies that should contribute to social, political and economic development.

He said the involvement of the police in politics may compromise their career and it was for this reason that the public expected the police officers to be neutral.

“However, at the time of elections, you have the right to vote for a candidate of your choice,” Mr Justice Sakala said.

He advised the police not to abuse their authority and to respect human rights of all Zambians.

Mr Justice Sakala said the detention of suspects to help police with investigations should not be abused.

He said the public expected the police to provide quality services because they were trained using taxpayers’ money, adding that they should resist bribes as that would compromise their duties.

He urged police officers to conduct themselves well and avoid contracting HIV/AIDS.

Inspector-General of Police Francis Kabonde advised community members to partner with the police service to reduce criminal activities.

The ceremony, which was characterised by drills and demonstrations, was attended by former police chief Francis Musonda, Copperbelt Permanent Secretary Villie Lombanya, Home Affairs Deputy Minister Richard Taima and other Government officials.
