Petzl Zipka Plus 2 Head Torch Review

September 3rd, 2010

This week we were sent the Petzl Zipka Plus 2 Head Torch and asked to review it for Techyzone readers. Upon opening the box, which contained a cheerful looking torch in misty grey, we decided to test this little glow box to see what it could do.

The first thing that we noticed was the strength of the beam as the torch projected a high intensity white light that reached out to a good distance in front of us. This impressive beam makes the Petzl Zipka Plus 2 one of our recommended items on a night trail hike or overnight camping trip. The Zipka lamp from Petzl may also be suitable for spelunkers and anyone else who could use a bright light while trekking or working underground.

Small and Lightweight

The last thing a traveller, camper or hiker would need is a heavy head lamp and since Petzl is a company known for its innovations in head torches, it has taken the necessary steps to ensure that this little light is just that – Little and Light.

The Zipka Head Torch has been designed to be compact and light weight and uses a retractable cord for the user’s convenience. It weighs 71 grams and is smaller than the palm of your hand and can easily be fixed on to your head by stretching the cord to fit around your head. Its light and compact body ensures that you will not feel that heavy pull of weight on your forehead which is a common complaint of campers who use other kinds of head torches.

The head torch is also small enough, to look good on your face without being bulky and giving the appearance of large gadget.

Doubles up as Bicycle Light

The Zipka Plus 2 Head Torch has a retractable cord that allows it to be fixed on to small poles, bicycle handle bars or anything that you can get it to fit on. This means that your Zipka torch can double as your bicycle lamp or ordinary lamp when you are not using it for camping. It is that convenient.

Those looking to buy this wonderful head torch which is well suited for camping and hiking at night will be able to purchase it for £32.45 which we think is a reasonable sum to pay for a reliable and durable torch such as this.

The Bright Beam In Your Night

The Zipka Head Torch gives out 140 hours of burn time and has a strong light output of 50 lumens.

The Zipka Plus 2 Head Torch uses white LED lights to provide maximum light and clarity and projects a beam up to 35 metres ahead of the user. The torch uses five lighting modes out of which three are available in white light and two in red. Should you wish to conserve battery power or decrease the light intensity, Petzl’s little torch also allows for this, having outfitted the Zipka Plus 2 Head Torch with a strobe, high and economical light setting. The red light can be turned on by pressing on the small white button on the front of the lamp and can be used in high and strobe settings.

Old Postage Stamps Storage | Old Postage Stamps

September 3rd, 2010

My Grandad kept his old postage stamps in dedicated stamp albums in some drawers of a spare bedroom. When they came into my possession I did something similar. I kept them in the albums but put them into the drawers of my bed.

I have since done some investigating into how it is best to store old postage stamps. The last thing I want to do is let his stamp collection deteriorate and lose their vibrancy and value.

I will also be adding to the collection and I want to make sure that the stamps that I add are preserved for the next generation.

Handling stamps – well it was obvious to me that you should not be handling the old postage stamps with your hands. Rather you should use tweezers. Not tweezers that you use in the bathroom, but specialist tweezers that are used for Old Postage Stamps. These tweezers have blunt ends.

I haven’t actually handled any of the stamps yet. I have ordered some first day covers (more on that in a later post) but you don’t have to touch those stamps on an individual basis.

Obviously when you are holding old postage stamps you should always take care not to rush and do so in a dry environment.

If you are mounting onto hinges ensure that you practice first. The hinges that you use should be of high quality and only apply as little moisture as possible to the part of the old postage stamps that the hinge attaches to.

If you are using protective mounts then again try to use those of high quality.

Now when you buy old postage stamps you may want to ‘house’ them for a period of time before inserting them into their final album. This is ok and you should use a stockbook for this task.

A stockbook can hold many stamps and some collectors often hold their old postage stamps permanently. When looking for a stockbock look for one that is specific for the purpose. Don’t overfill it and get it out from time to time to turn the pages to get some air to it. This way you get to look at the stamps at the same time as preserving them.

For a permanent home you need to get a dedicated stamp album. My Grandad has some beautiful old postage stamps albums. The first thing that I will be collecting is first day covers and I have order a stamp album from the royal mail. (I will take a picture of that when it arrives). As it was for first day covers I had to make sure that I checked the dimensions to be sure that they would fit in ok.

They wouldn’t fit in my Grandad’s spare album. I think the dimensions must have changed over the years.

Something new that I have learnt is that you should hold your old postage stamp albums in an upright position. I’m not sure about the exact reasons why I but I am guessing it is about have less weight on the stamps.

This is not how mine are currently stored so I will have to do something about that. I have also found out that it is important to get your stamps out from time to time and move them about a bit.

My Old Postage Stamps have been stored away for the last 20 years so that is something that I will need to do quite urgently. That is a daunting task as there are so many of them and I don’t want to spoil them. I guess that I have to start somewhere and by doing that would be a good chance to get some videos done. I will keep you posted on how that goes.

You don’t have to keep all your old postage stamps in dedicated albums if they don’t fit. It may be hard for some miniatures and special editions to fit. That is ok, just store them in boxes to make sure they are not damaged. When you store them away make sure that it is away from the light, you chosen storage place it not too hot or too cold and the level of humidity is low.

Check your collection on regular basis to ensure that they are still in the best condition. If there is any sign of something going wrong then do something about it immediately.

Sri Lanka needs peoples' monetary policy, not rulers': fuss-budget

September 3rd, 2010

EconoCautious,
Thank you for your comments. Yes, it is indeed a reversal of a global trend towards a better understanding of monetary policy and more transparency and less discretion.

The problem is not many people debate this issue. They only feel the effects when prices go up and the economy or the banking system collapse. Then they get excited but it is often too late.

Even then people will adduce non-monetary reasons for price inflation. Of course from the point of view of authorities it takes the pressure off them so it is in their interest to foster any stories about ‘cost-push’ inflation. Developed country central bank’s pushed the idea of cost push inflation very effectively in the 60s and 70s.

The Treasury secretary’s speech also contained allusions to that effect. He said:

“Very often with imperfections on market and financial system and structural characteristics particularly with regard to supply side behaviours in commodity markets and external trade, controlling money supply through various instruments may not be sufficient though necessary to control price stability…..Over reliance on such models may also have over simplified the framework for understanding complex socio-economic and real factors affective price.”

However elsewhere, the value of simple rule based monetary policy is now being seen.

A few months ago Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank President Charles Plosser said this (the relevant report is linked):

A rule-based approach can also lend more transparency to policy making, Plosser said, as the public can more easily see when policy is deviating from the norm, and policy makers will be forced to explain their actions.

“Because such a rule is transparent and easy to monitor, it helps the public form expectations of future policy,” he said.

New MultiLingual Website for the International Edition of ONEXENO

September 3rd, 2010

Penrose Press announces a significant upgrade to the ONEXENO website in accordance with the publication of the new international edition of the ONEXENO card game. The new site includes descriptions and official rules in ten languages – Chinese (simplified), Chinese (traditional), English, Dutch, French, German, Japanese, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.

ONEXENO’s new website (onexeno.org/) includes a multilingual Forum for discussing the game, it variations, and rules. Links to web referrals and press releases are posted on the site. The site also includes a calendar of upcoming events, such as trade shows, that ONEXENO will participate in.

ONEXENO is a card game played by one to seven players. The game contains a set of 70 square cards. No two cards are alike; each card is unique representing all of the possible combination binary elements around the periphery of a 3X3 matrix.

ONEXENO’s new packaging is considerably improved over the original, first edition. A drawer and sleeve package improves the durability and appearance of the box. In addition, the high quality waterproof cards make it a durable, portable game that can be taken almost anywhere.

Currently, special prepublication orders are taken on the site for the new international edition of ONEXENO at orders.penrosepress.com/internationaledition.aspx

These are prepublication offers at considerable discount over the suggested retail pricing. Merchant Special Volume Discounts are also available in this prepublication affer. The second edition will be available by October, 2010. So, its the time to stock up on ONEXENO for Christmas.
