Angouleme International Comics Festival director Benoit Mouchart talks to Connexion

January 27th, 2011

Angoul?me is a mecca for fans of bande dessin?e (?drawn strips?, ie. cartoons) every January, and this year will be no exception.about 200,000 lovers of ?la BD? descend for the Angoul?me Festival. Like Cannes for films, new French-language BD albums are selected for a competition, with a host of awards, notably the Fauve d?Or for the best album, named after the festival?s wild animal mascot. others include the Grand Prix de la Ville d?Angoul?me for lifetime achievement,or the Fauve FNAC-SNCF for the public?s favourite album. More than a prize-giving, this year?s festival, on January 28-30, includes ?the world’s biggest BD bookshop?, a space to read the competition albums, talks and signings, children?s activities, BD career workshops, and musical or comedy shows. There are also exhibitions, including one on rock?n?roll BD (a passion of 2011 jury president Baru, who won last year?s Grand Prix), a Manga space and a celebration of Snoopy?s 60th anniversary. Oliver Rowland interviewed the festival artistic director, Beno?t Mouchart (pictured). The festival has an increasingly international renown. we will have authors from all over the world, notably a lot of Americans and people from Hong Kong. Angoul?me is arguably the biggest festival of its kind, because it is not just a fan convention, like Comic-Con in San Diego, but a true cultural event for authors fans and the general public. And if you can?t get to it, you can follow what?s going on the internet, with live videos on your site. Yes, and you can vote for your favourite album to win the Fauve FNAC-SNCF by flicking through the selected albums. What are some of the highlights? We have exhibitions with real popular appeal, like one on Lanfeust [a series set on a fantasy world inhabited by trolls], but we also introduce you to what BD will be tomorrow, with avant garde exhibitions, such as work from Hong Kong. Also, one of our very successful ideas, much imitated, is the shows we put on. For example, ?drawing concerts? where singers or comedians interact with an artist who draws live on stage, projected on a big screen. one highlight will be New York group Heavy Trash, illustrated by jury president Baru. You also have a one-man-show by Philippe Geluck (author of Le Chat). That should be funny and a real one-off show, adapted specially for us. It?s stand-up; I don?t think he will be drawing on stage. the point is, the festival is not just a book fair, it is a place for creativity. Which other authors are coming? Moebius [French author known for western series Blueberry] will be there, and a lot of Americans [such as Dash Shaw, of Bodyworld, one of the top young US talents], British illustrator Charlie Adlard of Walking Dead [about zombies] or the Japanese star Ryoko Ikeda [who is inspired by themes such as the French Revolution or Wagner?s Ring Cycle]. there will be more than 1,000 there and there will be talks in English by English-speaking authors, with headphones for simultaneous translation for French visitors. So the festival is not limited to French albums? the only requirement is they should have been translated. Winners have included Americans like Art Spiegelmann [Maus], Chris Ware [the Acme Novelty Library] or Charles Burns [Black Hole]. it is true there are more Americans than Britons, but, for example, Guardian cartoonist Posy Simmonds [Tamara Drewe, Gemma Bovary] won a prize recently. You are also celebrating Snoopy everyone knows the character in France, but they don?t know his cartoon world. Schulz?s drawing style was revolutionary and there is also a philosophical side which is actually quite pessimistic, even depressive. I want to show that there?s more to the series than the T-shirts and posters. it is one of the world?s most important cartoons. You have an exhibition about Baru?s work? it is very socially relevant. He deals with immigration, because he is of Italian origin, about the working class, loss of industry, unemployment, how to get out of social deprivation, for example through sport. He?s a bit like Ken Loach, but with more humour and hope. in a civilisation of the image and that is always on the move, BD is a kind of writing that offers a particular vision of the world. a drawing style is a way of looking at the world and society. it has always been important to us to show that BD could be more than just entertainment. It seems cartoons are taken less seriously in the UK. Perhaps, but you have some of the most important authors. Alan Moore has won prizes for Watchmen and V for Vendetta and from Hell. He is one of the greatest living authors. Neil Gaiman is another whom we have had at Angoul?me, and a few years ago we had an exhibition on Dave McKean. I think they are more appreciated outside the UK: ?A prophet is without honour in his own land?. How do you make your selection? each year there are at least 4,000 new BDs published in France, and we receive about 1,000. It?s a huge task. French publishers produce translations of BD from all over the world, so it gives us a perspective on the world. To read a Korean, Mexican or Iranian BD is a way of appreciating their culture. I have a team of less than 10, who meet eight times a year to come up with a shortlist. an important factor is whether it?s enjoyable to read. you don?t have to feel guilty about pleasure in reading. if the album has no strong message but makes you burst out laughing, we?re not going to reject it. Are there certain tendencies? BD doesn?t hesitate to tackle subjects that French films and novels don?t. For example, there is Quai d?Orsay, which is about Dominique de Villepin at the Foreign Affairs Ministry, which would be unimaginable as a film. It?s rare a French film would tackle a subject about living leading politician, though there were films like the Queen or W. about Bush in the Anglo-Saxon world. Manga has become popular. Do you see it as competition for European BD? no, it?s stimulating for the French market to be confronted by ambitious foreign books. Do you enjoy it when BD is adapted for the cinema? I am really looking forward to Spielberg and Jackson?s Tintin film later this year. Herg? actually gave the go-ahead to Spielberg to do it before he died in 1983. Adaptations can be good or bad, depending on the director, but they also help to get the characters better known. Catch the festival online at bdangouleme.com

Antique Hand-Colored Botanical Prints: Collecting Copper …

July 4th, 2010

Collecting Copper Engravings Drawn by Early Botanists

Aug 21, 2009Lorraine Syratt

The earliest botanical drawings were made for the study of botany. While the ancient Greeks were the first to record flora and fauna for their medicinal value, the most descriptive illustrations began in the 16th century as the study of plants intensified with exploration and discovery of new worlds. In the 500 years prior, botanical drawings were idealized with illumination rather than with scientific accuracy and methodology.

However, according to Jane Grigson’s forward to The Englishman’s Flora, the pharmacopoeia recorded by the ancient Greek physician, Dioscorides Anazarbeus, was still being used by apothecaries and botanists in the time of Queen Elizabeth 1.

Antique Hand-Colored Botanical Prints

Many of these early botanical prints were copper engraved on separate sheets of paper and tucked loosely into portfolio bindings. Some, like Basilius Besler’s Hortus Eystettensis in 1613, included 367 copper engravings and the total was reprinted 300 times. Besler had a small army of artists who painstakingly added the colors to the engravings by hand with fine water color brushes. This was an expensive endeavor.

Besler prints have been circulating for over 400 years, but there are still numerous prints that have survived time are on the market. Values range between $2 K and $10 K.

How to Authenticate Antique Botanical Prints

Antique botanical prints, as well as other antique prints, are not that difficult to authenticate. When the paper is held up to the light, linked chain lines or impressions become visible. This indicates the piece was printed prior to the 19th century.

Early paper and print makers used a watermark of sorts in the paper. They may have placed a coiled wire in the paper press as a maker’s mark. It could be an initial or a date and piece of wire or both. It’s easily visible with a jeweler’s loupe or when simply held up to the light. Not all antique prints have the watermark, so it’s important for new collectors to research before they invest in art.

Pierre Joseph Redoute Rose Prints

Perhaps the most popular of all hand-colored botanical prints are those of Pierre Joseph Redoute who published them in Les Roses in 1824. His rose illustrations have been printed and reprinted over the years and are seen behind frames in nearly every home decor shop in North America. His original prints were hand-colored engravings. These are still available and many can be found for $400 or less. Collectors should look for the watermarks and expect to find some minor foxing or brown spots.

Collecting Antique Botanical Prints

The World Wide Web has shown that early and antique botanical prints aren’t as rare in the marketplace as one would think, but they are certainly valuable with some prints selling for thousands of dollars.

Collectors of anything are passionate about their collections. With botanical prints they may seek out everything by botanists, Basilius (Basil) Besler, Friar Charles Plumier or Hans Weiditz of the 16th century or Carolus Linnaeus of the 18th century, whose system of classifying plants is still today’s standard among botanists.

If collectors aren’t seeking out particular names, they may be looking for those prints with fine detail and bright clear color in the pigments or they be seeking work from a particular school of botany, an era or a country of origin.

An interesting collection can include all criteria above, and it’s possible considering the large number of hand-colored prints available. These collections can be used for personal study or framed. Many early botanical prints were large or “folio” size, approximately 14″ x 20″ as a rough example. Sizes varied.

Where to Find Antique Botanical Prints

There are many dealers in antique prints across North America and most are easily found with simple internet searches.

Fine antique art auctions often have antique prints in their catalogs, but for the best deals, online auctions are a good source. 18th and 19th century antique botanical prints can be found on eBay for under $300.

Storing and Framing Antique Botanical Prints

Collectors who store their prints should separate them with acid-free paper or acid-free folders and store them carefully in acid-free boxes.

If framing the prints, acid-free mat and backing paper should be used along with ultra-violet proof glass in the frame.

Please read Caring for Antique Prints for more information on storing and framing and readers may also be interested in the Glossary of vintage print terms.

The Haunted World of El Superbeasto | A Haunted Trail

April 17th, 2010

Did anyone of you out there in zombie land ever see Heavy Metal or Fritz the Cat? Well, if you haven’t then Rob Zombie’s second directorial offering of 2009 might actually shock you a bit. Think of this as a perfect hybrid of Crumb/Baskshi collaboration with some Ren and Stimpy thrown in and blended into a parody of 70’s Hanna Barbara cartoons. Yup, when Zombie said this was like an X-rated Scooby-Doo, I got what he meant after viewing it. It’s not literally Scooby-Doo guys, it has more to do with the fast and cheap toons churned out in the 70’s by the Hanna Barbara Studios. Think Johnny Quest with an obsession with horror and Sci-Fi pop culutre and the most tasteless and outrageous visual gags, mostly revolving around weird sex, and you have this film.

This is a perfect exploitation cartoon. It wears and loves its influences like old sweat pants that have been transformed into pajamas. The jokes are fast and broad and mostly tasteless. The dialogue is witty and sharp. Plus, it provides an interesting tutorial on how many different ways one can describe or refer to a certain part of the female anatomy. I warn you now PC Police, this 77 minute cartoon is loaded with foul langauge, mostly too outrageous for anyone to seriously be offended by, tons of animated nudity of every variety, human male and females and ‘other’, graphic bloody violence similar to that of a Japanese cartoon. Though, seriously, how could anyone truly be offended by the violence in this? It’s so silly and over the top.

Zombie has gathered together most of his Halloween, Devil’s Rejects, and House of 1000 Corpses acting troupe and a few new ones to lend their considerable voice talents to the many colorful denizens of The Haunted World of El Superbeasto. Rosario Dawson(who appears as a nurse in a deleted scene from The Devil’s Rejects involving a nasty meeting with a bed ridden Dr. Satan) is hysterical as the foul mouthed, gold digging stipper, Velvet Von Black. She puts her tone and vernacular on full ‘ghetto’ and gives some of the most sidesplitting line readings in the entire film. Paul Giamati, new to Rob Zombie land, plays Dr. Satan(no not the same Dr. Satan from the 1000 Corpses) and he gets to play it broad, and even sing concerto. He is really quite funny and twisted on the level of The Monarch of The Venture Brothers, but sexually adventureous in a graphic way and bit perverted. Ken Foree shows up for a few lines as a cat that Superbeasto uses to stuff his pants! Sherri Moon Zombie is in fully baby doll voice mode to play Stacy X, Superbeasto’s super sexy, constantly nude, butt-kicking, eye patch totting, gun weilding little sister. Moon Zombie pulls a Baby Firefly but on the side of good this time, so instead of the cute as a button-ness indicating fear, it’s just cute and quite funny. Brian Posehn(The Sarah Silverman Program)who is one of the best comic/writers out there voices Stacy X’s transforming robot. The ‘bot has a huge jonze for Stacy X, who wouldn’t? And the modifications in regard to how she now as to ride him as he turns four-wheels is perfectly tasteless and hysterical.

There’s a great scene in a strip joint that plays out like a Daffy Duck cartoon. If you look in the background at the various patrons horror fans will spot some of their icons. My favorite being the suicide emploring chest bursting alien. Even two members of the Devil’s Rejects show up in animated form. Otis gets to get the last word this time. Oh, and Michael Myers is directed by Zombie for a third time and gets run over about as much as the Michael Myers concept already has been for the last 30 years. Good one Rob. Though my favorite bit cooked up for this insane-fest of a cartoon is a song during the ending cat fight. A fully nude cat fight. It’s almost as if Zombie could hear his critics calling him a perverted debaucher more in regard of the animated nudity and in-your-face sexuality, and less over the animated violence, but beats them to the punch. A song about the pleasures of masturbating to animated characters, just like the Japanese, plays as close ups of various nude body parts of our fighting temptress’ tussling it out. Really funny.

The Blu Ray unfortunately is sparse with the special features, which is a surprise considering it was released by the always reliable, and extras heavy Anchor Bay. We get some deleted scenes which are really seconds short vignettes that were taken out of the film, most of them not that funny. We get alternate takes and alternate endings as well, and I can safely say that Zombie went with the right ones in the final film. The most interesting feature on the Blu Ray is the fully film in its animatic form. I’m a big animation buff and any chance to see the original pencil sketches in their full glory is always a pleasure. Speaking of the animation it is quite wonderful. It is most closely akin to The Brothers Grump or Ren and Stimpy. It’s very elastic and full of energy, and many bulging….bulging things. Many bouncing things too. But that’s it. No commentary, which Zombie usually provides and very well, and no docs regarding the film’s origins or basic creation. This is shocking due to the fact that on Zombie’s Halloween remake and The Devil’s Rejects dvds he has 3 plus hour documentaries regarding every inch of production, and these makeing-of docs are created in-house by Zombie and his hired crew. Oh well, I guess this perfect monstrosity speaks for itself.

Bottom line is this film is crude, rude, twisted and loaded with enough kinetic energy to fuel any mouse mascotted conglomerate. There’s lude jokes, nudity and/or manic violence on the screen every other second. It’s tiring and it moves so fast that you may want to watch it again right after it’s over. If any of the above mentioned actually ‘offends’ you then please skip it and skip the conservative review regarding it. Thos out there with a touch of the twisted, please grab this up right away. This is the best film Zombie has made since The Devil’s Rejects(which is his best film). Huh, and it’s not a remake or a sequel…go figure. Though, it is a comic book movie, but it’s based on a comic book that Zombie himself created so….whatever.

Any film that has a foul mouthed stripper getting married to an ex-geek who has had his face altered to like look the devil, so said ex-geek can garner the powers of the darkside, and the priest is played by or at least resembles the mutant from This Island Earth has got to be at least worth a rent! Right….?
