Women in Iraq Create Prosperity Candles for US Market

July 22nd, 2010

With its unique mission to support thousands of women entrepreneurs living in distressed areas of the world to build thriving businesses, Prosperity Candle inaugurates its first handmade pillar candles – in partnership with enterprising women in Baghdad, Iraq.

Founded on the belief that business has a vital and transformational role to play in addressing the global challenges we face today, Prosperity Candle invests in women as independent and resourceful entrepreneurs who are critical to creating the foundations for peaceful and prosperous societies. This is especially true in places where the company has chosen to work – such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Rwanda, and Haiti – where women are often left to single-handedly rebuild their lives and support their families in the shadows of conflict and the aftermath of disaster.

Lust haves

June 16th, 2010

Extreme Surf-style Hair Texturising Sea Salt Spray with UV filter, £3.29, VO5 at Boots. This nifty spray helps create volume and produces a great tousled effect but we had to use a lot of it each time and it made hair feel quite dry.

Calm waters *****

Candle in Wave, £30, Apothia (united-perfumes.com). A refreshing scent that reminds us candles work just as well in summer as in winter. Wave contains a blend of fresh white grapefruit, mandarin and yuzu (a Japanese citrus fruit), inspired by ‘clear mornings in a Malibu beach house’ (we wish).

Bobbi dazzler *****
Shimmer Brick Compact in Beach, £29.50, Bobbi Brown at Jenners (houseoffraser. co.uk). This neat little bronzer – which comes in a mirror compact – gives a gorgeously subtle glow to the skin. Use as a blush for minimum impact or all over for that even, sunkissed “I’ve just had a weekend in the Canaries” effect.

Trip ahoy ***
Organic Seaweed travel pack (50ml of shower gel, body lotion, shampoo, conditioner), £19, Seavite (hair1direct.co.uk). These products may contain marine extracts, but don’t expect to whiff like a salty old sea dog. The sweet scent is ideal for landlubbers and results in squeaky clean hair and smooth skin.

Glow for it *****
Powder blush in Hipness, £16.50, MAC at Harvey Nichols (harveynichols.com). A pretty pink blush in gorgeous seaside-style package, the shade goes on evenly, giving a warm, natural glow to the cheekbones. Perfect for summertime.

Well seasoned ****
Incredible Spreadable Sea Salt Body Smoother, £21, Origins at John Lewis (johnlewis.com). The sea salt plus brown and white sugars in this scrub help shift dry skin without being too rough. It has the most amazing smell thanks to a blend of mint and rosemary, and leaves skin with a soft sheen.

Sailor blues ***
Nail polish in Gypsy Blue £5, GOSH at Superdrug. You may need three coats but the resulting azure blue is so summery we adore it.
