No Pants Subway Ride ‘Official’ Theme Song

January 11th, 2011

It may have been the 10th annual No Pants Subway Ride 2011 last weekend, but for most people riding the subway, it was just another day on the train. in fact, seeing 3,500 New Yorkers (and subway riders in other cities) in their skivvies is probably preferable to what the rest of us have to see on our commutes.

Judging from the photo, most of these people look OK, too. Imagine if you’d had the couple who met, decided to have sex, and film it on your train. you could also have had the subway flasher who showed way more than his underwear to women in Boston. you could even have been sitting next to a woman who was giving birth on the subway.

See, bare legs in 32 degrees is looking pretty good now, no? When I am preparing my children for anything, we often sing “The People in your Neighborhood.” So, here are the People on your Train Ride**, mostly people my friends and I have seen:

*Warning: this song is not for children or the highly sensitive.

*(Sing in this tune.)

Who are the people on my train ride, on my train ride, on my trai-ain ride, oh who are the people on my train ride? They’re the people that you meet each day:

Oh look, here’s one person now. who might he be? Let’s ask him for clues:

I wear brown pants with stains on them. I sometimes put my hands down my pants. And you may mistake my riding companion as a hot dog. But it’s not! who am I?

I know who he is! He’s the guy who sat across from me one day on my way home from work masturbating. Awesome.

Yes, a flasher is a person on my train ride, on my train ride, on my trai-ain ride, oh a flasher is a person on my train ride. They’re the people that you meet each day:

Let’s go over to another car and see if we can meet some other people far away from the flasher’s car.

Oh look! Here’s another person now. who might he be? Let’s ask him for clues:

I am pacing frenetically back and forth and snorting some kind of white powder out of my long fingernail. I am also yelling out random expletives. who might I be?

I know who he is! He’s the guy who sat across from my sister last week snorting cocaine and hurling insults at her. good job boys and girls!

Yes, a cokehead is a person on my train ride, on my train ride, on my trai-ain ride, oh a cokehead is a person on my train ride. They’re the people that you meet each day.

Now let’s go to yet another car and see if we might meet some normal people. Nope! No such luck. Here’s another person now:

I have 32 pamphlets of mostly contradictory religious images. I am wearing a long robe and smell like urine and am holding a sign condemning you to hell. who am I?

Oh I know! I know! this is the religious guy who tells all subway riders that they will go to hell unless they repent and commit to wearing the same sweat-stained bathrobe he dons daily.

Yes, a whack job is a person on my train ride, on my train ride, on my trai-ain ride, oh a whack job is a person on my train ride. They’re the people that you meet each day:

Maybe we should take the bus?

Did you ever see weirdos on the train?

Crista Flanagan Playboy Photos: Mad Men Nude Pics Featured in August Playboy

August 6th, 2010

Could the 1960′s Recreation Playboy Shoot Feat. Crista Flanagan Be One of Playboy’s Last Classy Shoots?Crista Flanagan Playboy Photos: Mad Men Nude Pics Featured in August Playboy. Mad Men star Crista Flanagan is posing nude for Playboy in the August issue. The shoot will be very unique, as it will be a re-creation of shoots from the 1960′s. Considering that Penthouse is making a bid for Hugh Hefner’s Playboy, and that is creating a bidding war between the silk pajama clad entrepreneur and the big adult entertainment behemoth.

If the Crista Flanagan Playboy pics are in one of the last of the Playboy issues it could be one of the last iconic shoots. Playboy is a classy gentleman’s magazine, whereas Penthouses’s publication is a little raunchier (okay – a lot raunchier.)

New York Daily News reports on the Crista Flanagan Playboy Pictures, noting that “Flanagan appears on two covers of the August issue of Playboy that were modeled after shots from the ’60s and inside in an eight-page layout that keeps the “Mad Men” theme. The folks at Playboy also reproduced classic ads from the period, too.”

Jezebel.com notes that the “Classy sex magazine is dead”, citing three reasons including “1) If you want high-end photography to go along with your titillation, you can read GQ; if you want highbrow writing about sex, you can read Nerve or sundry personal blogs. 2) Sexual tastes are far more diverse and dynamic than either of these magazine ever gave them credit for being. 3) People can instantly find real sex, either images of it or the IRL kind, online.”

Penthouse could trump Hefner’s bid to bring Playboy back to his family. The same company that owns Penthouse also owns the “Friend Finder” family of sites.

Crista Flanagan Playboy pictures showcase why Playboy has made it through the years. It’s not hard core, and it’s not degrading to women, either. The classy and artistic photos show off the talent of the photographers and the beauty of a woman’s body in a way that doesn’t make anyone (outside the uber shy) blush.

Hopefully Hefner’s vision for the popular gentleman’s review will remain intact and classy and we will see more shoots in the future such as that from Crista Flanagan of Mad Men.

How a suit is canvassed

May 11th, 2010

When men (and their tailors) talk about unstructured suits, one of the things they mean is a reduction in the lining in the jacket. But they also mean a suit with less internal structure to the chest.

Within the chest there will be one, two or three layers of felt, wool, cotton or horsehair in some combination. A standard English suit will have a layer of horsehair running all the way behind the forepart of the suit, with a layer of felt in the upper half. Those two are sewn loosely together with basting stitches and then attached, again loosely – though securely – all the way around the edge.

The horsehair most resembles a thin layer of canvas, and the entire structure is usually referred to as the ‘canvassing’ of the chest. It is very flexible, stretches and moulds easily. So it will shape to the contours of your chest after a few wears, creating a three-dimensional shape that fits you in a way the tailor cannot build for. This 3-D shape is one of the reasons it is important to hang, press and pack your jacket carefully.

Because the felt and horsehair is only tacked at the edges, it can move or ‘float’ within the suit. This is the floating canvas that is referred to as the hallmark of a good suit. Poorer products will glue (fuse) the canvas to the forepart, reducing its ability to move and mould.

More layers and different materials can be used to create greater shape to the jacket. In the opposite direction, it can be cut down in size or removed altogether to reduce structure. The unlined suits discussed above obviously do not contain any canvas. Half-lined suits usually do. But even fully lined suits can just have canvas down to the waist, in order to reduce weight and make the jacket more breathable.

Coats equally – it is rare to find coats today that are fully lined, right down to the hem. It is one reason that vintage coats tend to be so much heavier. It makes them much more wind-resistant though.

When Giorgio Armani famously de-structured the suit in the late seventies, he both reduced the weight of the canvas and cut it down in size (as well as making the whole suit baggier). Italian tailors had been doing it for years, driven by the need to cope with higher temperatures than those in England. Most Italian suits today, both ready-to-wear and bespoke, will tend to have less structuring. It’s easy to tell how much canvas there is and how far it stretches – just pinch the forepart on front and back and feel the layer in between.

So who uses what canvas today? Tailors like Anderson & Sheppard on Old Burlington Street use two layers of lighter weight wool or cotton, to soften their suits. Equally prestigious Huntsman on Savile Row is famous for a more ‘structured’ look and uses a thicker canvas. Older English suits always used heavier cloths as well as linings, leading to some remarking that they could stand up on their own, such was their structure.

Proponents of the former approach (including Steven Hitchcock, son of A&S’s head cutter John Hitchcock, and ex-A&S cutter Thomas Mahon) would say their suits are more comfortable. Proponents of the latter (including ex-Huntsman head cutter Richard Anderson and to an extent Norton & Sons) would say theirs flatter the customer more.

Each is merely a question of taste. If you want a comparison, all are usually open to going into the shop to try on or at least see standard garments. (Indeed Huntsman also offers ready-to-wear, so there is a ready selection of models to try.)

Other structural aspects of the suit include the collar and shoulders. The collar is pretty similar to the chest – a layer of canvas and one of melton, sewn loosely together and then attached to the back of the neck. There is more variation in the shoulders, though they will tend to follow the same philosophy as the chest. So an Anderson & Sheppard-style suit will have less shoulder padding or, at the least, it will be of a softer, spongier material.

The wadding at the top of the sleevehead (the shoulder of the suit beyond the seam that attaches it to the sleeve) can also vary. More wadding creates a ‘roped’ shoulder that stands higher – giving the impression that there is a strip of rope running around the shoulder. Extreme versions and padding can lead to a ‘pagoda’ shoulder that actually curve up, leaving the line of the wearer’s shoulder entirely.

Your Baby Can Read

May 4th, 2010

Your baby can read early if you start early enough and that means right from birth. That may seem to be too early to you and you may be one of those who think that a baby doesn’t do much but you are mistaken. Babies learn even before birth. Yes it is true. Reading from birth is possible. Don’t waste a moment in starting to stimulate your baby’s brain from the moment they are born. This means talking to your baby from day one and surrounding your baby with music, songs, rhymes and stories which will familiarize your baby with their native language. This happens even before birth. Researchers have shown that a baby is already used to hearing his or her mothers speak and amazingly the cry of a newborn has been shown to closely follow the speech patterns the baby’s mother uses.

Reading is part of language as a whole. Speaking, listening, reading and writing are all linked and one cannot develop without the others. There are essential ‘pre-reading’ skills which must be learned if these language skills are to be mastered fully. These are learned through fun games and activities which engage your baby and teach important pre- reading skills needed to read later on in life. These skills are auditory discrimination, visual discrimination, auditory and visual memory. These can be ‘taught’ or encourage by surrounding your baby in language right from birth. Talk to your baby all day long. Tell stories, sing nursery rhymes, read books, show posters and pictures with printed words and the alphabet.

Put pictures and mobiles where your baby can see them. Hang them above your baby’s changing mat so that there is plenty for your baby to look at when they are being changed. This not only stimulates baby’s brain but keeps them amused and stops grumpy changing experiences when some baby’s take a dislike to laying flat. If you do all I suggest here your baby will become familiar with language in all its forms and your baby will be ready to read early and find reading comes easily.

Don't they scrub up well! Gwen Stefani and her family get smart for family …

May 3rd, 2010

By Georgina Littlejohn
Last updated at 5:02 PM on 20th April 2010

They’re a rock and roll family with a wardrobe to match – full of denim, leather and lots and lots of black.

So it made for a nice change to see pop star Gwen Stefani and her clan suited and booted to the nines as they made their way to a christening yesterday.

The singer, 40, her rock star husband Gavin Rossdale, 44, and their two sons Kingston, three, and 20-month-old Zuma were pictured walking to a church in LA.

Smart: Gwen Stefani, husband Gavin Rossdale and their sons Zuma and Kingston (right) make their way to her baby niece’s christening

Rossdale, usually seen clad in black from head to toe, looked very handsome in his grey suit and polished shoes.

Gwen looked elegant in thick striped orange, black and grey suit but still kept an element of her kooky style with her unusual towering heels, dark sunglasses and bright red lipstick.

Even Kingston was dressed for the occasion in chinos, a striped blue jacket and white and blue bowling shoes.

This way, mummy: Kingston pulls on Gwen’s hand as she and Gavin stop to chat to a relative outside the church

Say cheese! Kingston clings on to his mum as she takes some snaps for the family album

Rag & Bone's Downright Sexy Bespoke Business

April 28th, 2010

Photo: Alexei Hay; styled by Joe Zee

On her: Wool-blend blazer, $1,690, trousers, $360, both, Rag & Bone, at Rag & Bone, NYC, call 212-727-2990. Bra, Eres, $275. Glitter-embossed leather boots, Giuseppe Zanotti Design, $695. Neville (left) and Wainwright, in their own clothes.

It’s one thing to have a $2,000 bespoke suit made for yourself and another thing to lose it the very next day. But that’s what happened to actress Lake Bell when Rag & Bone designers Marcus Wainwright and David Neville fitted her for the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s gala in New York last year.

“I didn’t lose it,” protests the 31-year-old Bell, who, before playing a ballbuster in It’s Complicated, was best known for presiding over a laugh riot as Cameron Diaz’s girlfriend in What Happens in Vegas. Later this year, Bell is slated to star as the ghost of a crime-solving cellist, opposite Josh Lucas’ detective, in Little Murder, a thriller set in post–Hurricane Katrina New Orleans. She’ll also do a turn as the cohostess of an orgy in a comic indie called A Good Old-Fashioned Orgy and star opposite Zoe Saldana and Shannon Doherty in Christopher B. Landon’s dramedy Burning Palms.

But right now, it’s all about the suit. “I didn’t know they were giving it to me,” she says, before the trio fall into a Three Stooges recounting of the case of the missing suit. “I thought they needed it back for their archives, so I returned it the next day.”

“It never arrived,” Wainwright says, with a sympathy shrug from Neville.

So where is it? More shrugs.

“No one knows,” Neville says.

“They called me this morning and said, ‘Hey, by the way, can you bring the suit for the ELLE shoot?’ And I was like, ‘What suit?’?” adds Bell, who studied drama in London and can hold her own against any wry Brit.

“We said, ‘The one we made you for the Met,’?” Wainwright deadpans.

“I swear I sent it back!” Bell cries. “It’s not like I left it in the back of a cab like in that Jackie Chan movie.”

Today, she’s wearing a black, notch-lapel, wool two-piece, but I must admit that I’m having a hard time focusing on its finer points. Faced with Bell’s killer curves and lean legs, all I can think about are my own genetic failings, while recognizing that, oh yeah, this is what a perfect body looks like with or without the custom benefits. Girl that I am, though, I’m equally preoccupied with ogling the lean, aristocratic physiques of Wainwright, 35, and Neville, 33. Their accents are beguiling, their gestures charming, and then there is their languidly disheveled attire—fabrics worn-in just so, silhouettes rumpled in all the right places. They have so perfected a style of cool chic, it’s no wonder celebrities such as Drew Barrymore, Charlize Theron, Cameron Diaz, Brad Pitt, and Cate Blanchett are fans. “We come to fashion from an interesting perspective since neither of us has formal training,” says Neville, who, prior to partnering with Wainwright, was an investment banker. Wainwright worked in telecommunications. The two have been fast friends since attending boarding school together outside London.

Wainwright and Neville launched their denim line, Rag & Bone, named after London’s nineteenth-century scrap collectors, in 2002. It was an overnight success, and in spring 2004 they followed up with a full collection of menswear, then women’s in fall 2005. Their idea was to make clothes their friends would want to wear every day—unisex pants, jackets, vests, and shirts that are a classic take on Victorian tailoring, with a little sexy sportswear thrown in. Add to that an accessories line, a West Village flagship where the clothes hang in a dark industrial space among a hodgepodge of antiquities and other cool finds, a SoHo store on Mercer Street that opened this past fall, and you could say these two are on a roll. Now they are launching a custom-order suit-making business for both men and women, offering three styles—tuxedo, peaked lapel, and notched—in classic colors such as white, navy, and black.

“Maybe it’s because we’re so English,” Wainwright says, “but we really appreciate the art and craftsmanship of Savile Row–style tailoring. It seemed like the perfect next step.” Their search for a bespoke tailor led them to the Martin Greenfield Clothiers in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. “We work with two guys named Rocco and Mario. They are true characters,” says Neville, who is married to makeup artist and Revlon Brand Global Artistic Advisor Gucci Westman and has two young children. “It took more than 100 people and 108 steps to make Lake’s suit,” adds Wainwright, who’s also married and the father of two little boys. “We even made her a chest float.”

“It was impeccable,” Bell enthused. “It felt modern and looked sharp. I love that look on a woman.”

“What look is that?” Wainwright asks.

“What I’m saying is, I’m a cross-dresser,” Bell says, not missing a beat.

Men's Shirts – Fashion, Not Just Function

April 28th, 2010

For many, the average men’s shirt is simply a garment of utility – one that is worn by men across the world for reasons of function and not necessarily fashion. But this attitude belies the hundreds of years of trends in men’s shirts. From the typical collarless shirts with billowing sleeves worn by classical painters to the modern formal button-down shirt, men’s shirts have captured the imaginations of both designers and ordinary men for generations. In the twentieth century in particular, a range of different shirt styles have proved popular with men of all ages.

One of the most important developments in men’s shirts over the last hundred years, for example, has been the invention of the polo shirt. The polo shirt, or ‘tennis shirt’, was created by legendary French tennis player Rene Lacoste in 1929 as an alternative to the stiff dress shirts and ties typical of tennis attire at the time. In the 1960s, Ralph Lauren propelled the polo shirt to new heights as a prominent item in his ‘Polo’ collection; and since this time the polo shirt has become so popular that it is now a standard category of clothing – although it has fallen out of favour with most tennis players.

The granddad shirt has also been a long lasting trend in men’s shirts in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. These collarless shirts have been popular with men in warm countries for decades and have seen a variety of incarnations throughout the years. The Nehru Jacket, for instance, is a South Asian version of the modern granddad shirt that was popularised by the first Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in the 1950s and early 1960s, and has since been prominently worn by a number of celebrities, from the likes of Sammy Davis Jr to Steven Segal. Today’s granddad shirt preys on bright colours and an ethno-bohemian vibe that appeals to a variety of men’s fashion trends – from festival clothing to smart casual summer wear.

The button-down shirt has also been one of the most influential men’s shirts in fashion history – but memories of how it was created tend to be somewhat hazy. Some fashion experts claim that the button-down collar shirt was invented by an American shirt manufacturer who was inspired by an English polo match, in which players had their collars clipped down to avoid flapping in the wind. Others say that button-down shirts were created in New York, when their inventor (as yet anonymous) attached his collar to his shirt with buttons in a fit of annoyance at the oncoming wind.

But whatever the origin of the button-down shirt, its impact on the men’s shirt industry has been historic, as button down shirts are now worn in both formal and casual contexts. Today, short-sleeved men’s shirts are often worn with skinny jeans, large belts and tailored waistcoats for a fresh and informal look that still exudes smart chic. And with men’s shirts available in a variety of colours – from grey to raspberry – and in a variety of floral and striped patterns, it’s clear that evolving trends in men’s fashion are far from over.

micah's 2 year photo shoot

April 26th, 2010

Until, yesterday morning.

We put him back in his crib on Sunday night.
I never blogged about it, but we moved him
to a big boy bed the Thursday after Easter…
and a week and a half later we realized
that he needs more time in his crib.
He’s not climbing out of his crib at all,
so we knew that it would be okay to put him back in there.
It was just wearing us out having to put him back in bed
500 times, and disciplining him,
and so on and so forth,
so we decided to wait till the end of July.
Then we’ll try again.
I hope we’re not messing him up too much.
UGH!
The life of a parent is never easy.

Anyway, back to the photo shoot.
Micah slept till 9:30am yesterday,
(guess he was making up for all the lost
sleep he had while sharing a room with our early riser)
so I had to get him ready fast because
I needed to do his photo shoot before
his 11am doctors appointment.

So we’re driving away from home and it’s 10:30!!
I knew I really didn’t have much time at all,
so we stopped at our neighborhoods golf course
and did a quick 10 minute photo shoot.
But seriously, I’m pretty sure it was one of the best
10 minute photo shoots I’ll ever have.
Micah listened very well to my instruction.
He didn’t put up any fights,
he even looked at the camera a few times.
He never ran away or sat down in protest.
Seriously, I’ve never gotten this many good photos in 10 minutes!

Here are just a few of my favorites!
You can see a bunch more here
and one collage here! The guys who were working at the course must have
thought he was pretty cute,
they kept waving at him,
telling him to smile….
it was pretty cute.
They must have thought we’re a big golfing family
given the sweater vest and plaid shorts!
Everything went great at the doctors too.
He weighs 30lbs and is 36 1/4 inches tall!
They say that’s 75% for weight and 90% for height.
The dr. told me that he’s pretty tall,
which I think is funny because if you know
Greg and I in real life we’re not “tall” people!

He did get one shot,
cried a bit and then just
kept putting his hand on his leg and saying
oww! oww!

What a great, handsome little man!
I love this kid!!!
