coin collecting display case

Gold Presidential Coins – $175 for full set. Is it worth it?

I just bought the first four coins of the new presidential coin collection because I thought it would be cool. (I’m not a coin collector and this would be my first collection.) I paid approximately $12 for the first four coins plus a nice leather holding case, straight from the mint. The coins have not been in circulation and have a clear display capsule.

My question is if I should order the remaining 36 for the entire set of 40. They want $162 for the remaining coins.

In your opinion, is it a wise investment? If I don’t order the uncirculated coins now in the clear capsules will the mint offer that deal again? Should I wait and just collect coins that have been circulated and put them in the collection?

Any advice is appreciated.

No it is not worth it. Before those coins are really worth something, you will be long gone from this world. I think it is more fun collecting along the way. The coins will outlive you before you really get something out of them.

Coin collectors say their penchant for pocket change isn’t justa hobby, it’s a peek into our past.

MUSCATINE, Iowa – Those who are numismatically inclined gatheredSunday for the Port City Coin Club of Muscatine’s 72nd annual coinshow. Dealers from around the area bought, sold, showed off andchatted about the hobby and business of coin collecting.

Numismatists, those who study or collect coins, tokens or papermoney, felt right at home in the room filled with relics.

“Coin collecting has an enormous amount of history associatedwith it,” said Nevin Roberts of Muscatine, one of eight members ofthe Port City Coin Club. “If you like history and people, you wouldprobably like learning about and collecting coins.”

Roberts said the Port City Coin Club meets once a month, exceptfor in the summer, and the camaraderie of the local members andcollectors from across the state keep the hobby interesting. Thoughthe club isn’t very active, he said it has remained intact to keepthe annual Muscatine coin show going.

“We also do this for the community. Not everybody wants to be inthe club but many people are interested in coins here locally,”Roberts said.

Sunday there were 11 vendors set up, filling the banquet room atthe Muscatine Holiday Inn, and a steady stream of interestedbrowsers and buyers made their way around the room.

The thrill of collecting is finding rare coins that one may havebeen in search of for years – and buying it at a good price, saycollectors.

“My favorite collection is the Morgan silver dollars(1879-1921). It’s a nice big coin, a pretty coin and it is silverso it has value,” Roberts said.

Tom Robertson, 69, of Iowa City is another member of the PortCity Coin Club.

“I go to all the (coin shows and coin auctions) in the state, within driving distance,” said Robertson, district director of theIowa Numismatic Association. “I collect a lot of different things, mostly American currency.

Robertson said he doesn’t sell coins very often, but will partwith some coins for cash occasionally. He holds on to the rare andintriguing ones.

He’s dedicated time to keeping younger people interested incollecting coins so that the hobby and history doesn’t fall by thewayside in the future. He goes to schools and teaches young CubScouts about coin collecting.

Towns like Iowa City, Cedar Rapids and the Quad-Cities area havelarger clubs, but their ranks are thinning, he said. Even thoughclub participation is down, coin buying is at a cyclical high rightnow because investors in the gold and silver market are hoping tocash in on the current high rates for those metals.

Denny Ross, a professional numismatists and owner of SleepyHollow Coins in Albia, was among the vendors.

He said the gold bullion, or gold shaped into a coin and sold byweight at the going rate, is very popular right now. He sells about$60,000 to $90,000 per month through his business because tradingis at a high. These coins can be collected for value, for theirgold content, or for their appearance.

At Sunday’s show the highlights were displays of some of therarest and prettiest coins.

Ross had 20th century U.S. coin type set on display. The typeset has a representation of each coin denomination.

Though there are many different values for sets, this one wasspecial and valued at about $100,000. In addition to other coins ofthe period, it contains a satin proof 1921 peace dollar, printed asa sign of America’s commitment to peace after World War I and nowworth about $45,000.

“There were only 20 satin proofs issued that year,” Ross said.”I never thought I’d own one.”
