Slaying victim remembered

December 27th, 2010

HARRISBURG — here is what the family of Jared stout would like people to know about the 13-year-old boy with the long blond bangs who, police said, died at the hands of his father on Wednesday.

Jared loved music and was active in his high school band and jazz group. He sang in his church choir and played instruments at Faith Lutheran Church in Junction City. He took great joy in downloading songs off the computer and figuring them out. and his new love in music was his electric guitar, the only instrument he practiced without being told.

He loved animals — including his dog Bandit and his rabbit Snuggles — and nature, including going down to Hayworth River bottom with Bandit and his grandpa, who let Jared drive his truck. last year he had one of his best vacations ever in Montana and Idaho, fishing, hunting, tubing on the Snake River, taking jet boat rides and camping.

He was a gifted student, a freshman at Harrisburg High School, after skipping second grade early on. He had an innate curiosity and loved learning — everything from the history of airplanes used in World War II to the latest electronics. He loved to experiment and tinker with things, taking them apart and putting them back together, always thinking about and questioning how they worked. He liked gadgets, video games, and helping his family and friends with their computers and phones.

He was looking forward to his high school band trip to Hoodoo and San Francisco and going snow boarding this year. and he hoped to one day join the Air Force and fly jets. He had already flown with friends when he attended Sky School, a summer program for youth interested in learning to fly.

“Jared will be extremely missed by his family and friends who felt blessed to have him in their lives,” according to a statement from the family released through Jared’s pastor, Brennen Guillory.

The family has lived in Harrisburg about 40 years, Guillory said. “a lot of people know them and they are receiving a lot of support.”

Jared’s church family also is mourning for him and trying to find the strength to deal with the loss, according to Guillory. “we weep together and pray together,” he said. “we hold one another and tell stories. we trust that God walks with us in the dark valley.”

A notice posted on the city of Harrisburg’s website said that a grief counselor, Marc Bouvier, is available “for Harrisburg area youth and adults affected by the murder/suicide…?.”

A spokesman for the Linn County Sheriff’s office said Friday night no further information was available about the alleged murder-suicide. Police said earlier that Darwin stout, 49, had stabbed his son to death and then killed himself with the same knife at the family’s home.

Lamae stout, 58, found the bodies of her husband and son at the top of a stairwell when she came home from work about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sheriff Tim Mueller said.

Mueller said investigators had learned that Darwin stout had become paranoid and made irrational statements during the past week and a half. stout had voluntarily gone to a hospital for a mental evaluation but was released from care after officials deemed he was not a threat to himself or others, Mueller said. He said he did not fault officials at Sacred Heart Medical Center’s University District hospital in Eugene for releasing stout. “unless (a person) trips the right trigger, they can’t do anything about it,” Mueller said.

Darwin stout told his wife when she left for work at the Georgia-Pacific mill in Halsey. on Wednesday that he was taking their son to lunch that day, according to the Albany-Democrat Herald. The newspaper said police logs showed Lamae stout had tried to contact her husband all day Wednesday but no one answered the phone.

Funeral arrangements for Jared stout are pending at Murphy-Musgrove Funeral Home in Junction City. The family requests that memorials be made to Womenspace or to the Harrisburg High School band in lieu of flowers.

Funeral arrangements for Darwin stout are pending at Fisher Funeral Home in Albany.

World Record Corn Maze – Helping The Needy

September 10th, 2010

For the past 10 years, the Jaworski family in Dundee Michigan have created Farmer J’s Corn Maze out of one of their corn fields. Visible just off of highway US-23 at Exit 17, the corn maze has drawn thousands of visitors each year since they started making corn mazes a decade ago. This year, the family has decided to change it up and go for some real world records. At the same time, they’ve added a twist to help visitors support their own local or national charity.

Developed using an American theme this year. “We the People” and faces of famous historical figures, Farmer J’s Corn Maze in Dundee MI has turned in claims on 2 Guinness Book of World Records in 2010. The world record corn maze is both the largerst, and it has the longest path. Larger and longer than any other corn maze ever built prior. Farmer J’s world record maze in 2010 holds both distinctions at once. In addition, as is 2 records were not enough, Farmer J’s Corn Maze is attempting to also break the record for the Worlds Largest Torch (flashlight)Lit Parade. On September 18th, 2010, anyone is invited to attend and be a part of the world record breaking attempt. Visitors should show up on September 18th with their flashlight and be there right around 6pm. “It is going to be a lot of fun on the 18th (of September) “says Lyle Jaworski, a third generation agricultural engineer and owner of Farmer J’s. “If we can get enough visitors to come and bring all their friends, we can really do this.”

Of course while a world record breaking corn maze is a sight to see in and of itself, Lyle and the Jaworski family have added another reason to have folks come out and see this one of kind creation. They’ve added the ability for visitors to help their own individual favorite charity. Inside the world record corn maze are 24 checkpoints that visitors can seek out. When reaching a check point, they can check off the accomplishment on a downloadable pledge form, that is available on the Farmer J’s website (worldrecordcornmaze.org). Visitors tracking their checkpoint accomplishments (either on the September the 18th celebration or any day they visit the maze in 2010) can sign up sponsors who bid a specific dollar amount for each checkpoint reached. “This is a great opportunity for individuals or any type of group to raise funds to help out others in need, while having fun getting lost in the biggest corn maze ever made” say Lyle. All Farmer J’s asks is that the visitors to the world record corn maze, report back to them how much was actually raised. Farmer J’s will keep a running total overall and report it out for all to see. In add, they hope to raise millions of dollars for charities during the fall 2010 season. If the fund raising is successful, that may in fact lead to a fourth world record too.

Looking at the possibility of breaking four separate Guinness Book of World Records this year at Farmer J’s in Dundee Michigan and really enjoying all the efforts involved in this monumental task, the Jaworski family have turned their Farmer J’s business into a potentially monumental benefit to the community as well.

Farmer J’s world record corn maze opens in early September, just west of the crossroads of highways M50 and US-23 (exit 17 on US23) in Dundee Michigan. For more information about this record breaking attempt visit worldrecordcornmaze.org

Gaj-it Review of SMT Jacket Laptop Bag | UK Gadget and Tech News …

August 26th, 2010

Overview

International Laptop bag creators STM, have a new line of stylish, rugged, hardwearing, lightweight laptop bags. Founded in 1998 outside Sydney Australia in a trendy Bondai Beach suburb. Their mission remains the same to this day; they want to come up with a more comfortable, secure and stylish means of transporting your laptop.

After all, laptops range can from £250 up to £2000 – so keeping your laptop safe when in transit can be a very important. With a range of products and prices to suit all – they make some of the best laptop bags we have ever laid our eyes on. Whether you need a back-pack, shoulder bag, sleeve or even a all-in-one suitcase solution – look no further than SMT.

We got hold of one of their new laptop bags, to be specific the Jacket Small to review. So, we packed some sandwiches and went out for the day to see how good the Jacket Small handles the hustle and bustle of city life with our Macbook in hand.

Review

The Jacket Small comes in couple of colours and is perfect for someone who wants to travel fast with a slim and elegant laptop bag, it comes in five sizes – and is perfect for a iPad or laptop. It’s made from a hardwearing nylon for the exterior and a smooth soft brushed polyester for the inside.

We got hold of one of the 13-inch bags and it was perfect snug fit for our 13-inch Macbook. It’s lined with super soft silky interior, which will protect your pride and joy, keeping it clean and scratch free. Which is especially important if you have a Mac as they can pick up scratches quite easily.

It packs two pockets on the front one zippered front pocket, which was perfect for our charger and has another smaller slot only pocket for your mobile phone allowing for quick and easy access.

On the other side, there is a simple slot for all your important paper work. The Jacket Small seems to cover every base really well taking the traditional envelope design to next level. Other notable inclusions coming in the form of a fantastic removable and adjustable should strap, something that traditional envelope cases don’t have. Now your hands will be free to tackle world, without having to have the laptop under your arm if you need to do something.

They have also included a very strong carry handle in the top of the case and from the looks of the construction you’ll be able to carry it come rain or shine with confidence.

We Say

STM have come up trumps with the Jacket Small, and having looked on their web store they have over 50 different bags for all sizes, laptops and situations. We wouldn’t hesitate to go as far as saying this is the best laptop case we have seen so far. Our current sleeve case has been blown out of the water, and we won’t be going back. For long lasting laptop bag that protects your most important gadget, you can’t go wrong with STM and any of their bags. Well-made, stylish and at sensible prices – STM are the company we would recommend for all your laptop case and bag needs.

10/10 (We love it!)

Luxury Camping | ASAP Travel Blog

July 7th, 2010

Camping has progressed since the days of my youth when my friends and I would pitch our tiny tent in a farmer’s muddy field and huddle round the primus stove trying desperately to heat some food and at the same time stay warm.

It has even moved on from the large, multi-room tents that I went to later in life, permanent holiday camps in Spain and France.

Nowadays, you can discard any thought of roughing it, for camping can be a thoroughly luxurious experience.

Consider a camping holiday in the UK this year. Not only will it be lighter on your purse but also you can minimise your carbon footprint and help the national economy.

The Lake District is a fabulous area for camping and becoming one with nature, with beautiful scenery and lakes, fresh air and lots of healthy walking. After a long day exploring the fells you want to come back to a bit of comfort. And camping in a Mongolian yurt will supply you with all the luxury you would expect in a superior hotel. The authentic yurt sleeps 2 adults and 2 children and does have electricity that runs an oil fired heater and a shower. There’s a big bed and sheepskin rugs, it has a shed for basic cooking and an area where you can sit outside and just enjoy the view. Everything you can imagine is supplied in the yurt: crockery, cutlery, bed linen, BBQ and picnic equipment, tv, DVD player, fridge, table and chairs, and more. For £400 a week, this luxurious accommodation is a bargain. Yurt camping is also available in other regions of the UK and throughout Europe.

Another option is to go camping in Brittany in a luxury gypsy caravan, known as a roulette. The caravans are static, so there is no need to worry about driving a horse or wondering where to tether it when you make camp each night.

The campsite is in the extreme west of Brittany, in Brasparts and is located between a national park and the sea, boasting some outstanding countryside. The roulettes come in various sizes depending on the number of people staying, and they are available to hire per week, for a few days or for a weekend break. There is roulette with wheelchair access and for those who need added support and access. All the roulettes are comfortable and well equipped with shower, hob, fridge, garden furniture with towels and bed lined included. The prices vary dependent on the size of roulette that you choose, but a night costs approximately €75.

If you truly want to move in with nature then try an eco-holiday at Canvas Moon in central Portugal, surrounded by mountains and rivers with trees of eucalyptus, mimosa and pine. Canvas Moon has two large tents and is designed as a real luxury hideaway. The tents are comfortable and you do sleep on real beds; you can choose between the Marrakech and the Parisian tent. Bamboo showers collect water from the mountain spring that is heated by the sun and provides you with a lovely hot 42-degree shower. The night-lights are powered by solar energy, Zeer Pots keep your food cool and eco-friendly Kelly kettles boil your water. Tropical plants, vines and fruit trees line the terrace, providing you with a lush and tranquil location to enjoy your camping holiday. The campsite is close to the Serra da Estrela Mountains and here you can hike for miles, mountain climb or search the peaks for buzzards and kestrels. The Aguieira reservoir is close by and provides cycle tracks, river beaches and fantastic water sports. To travel to Canvas Moon fly either to Porto or Lisbon airports and take a bus or train to Santa Comba Dao where someone from the campsite will be happy to come and collect you. Or alternatively, hire a car, drive the two hours and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The cost for a week in this beautiful campsite is €350 per week or just €200 if you are brave enough to camp over the winter. If you do camp over the winter, then you can enjoy an afternoon’s skiing on the mountains for just #10 per half-day.

If you want to travel a little bit further, what about Montana in the US? You can camp in luxury safari-style tents – or as the Americans call it, glamping. Paws Up is a resort in the Blackfoot Valley, 30 miles north east of Missoula offering tents at two spectacular locations. The first one is Tent City and is a camping holiday with a bit of the western frontier thrown in. The six tents lie at the foot of towering pines and are protected by large natural boulders. The tents have feather beds, wooden flooring and electricity. The second location is River Camp, situated close to the Blackfoot River. The river that was the inspiration for bestseller and movie A River Runs Through It. Similar to the tents in Tent City, the tents have wooden flooring and electricity. Both locations have a camping butler. The tents sleep up to 4 people and cost from $715 per night for two people, but this does include all meals. The campsite is open from May to September and caters for weddings and honeymooners.

The first luxury camping site in South America is located on the shores of Lake Toro in the breathtaking surroundings of Patagonia. This area of southern Chile is an area of outstanding beauty with mountains, rivers and ancient forests. Seventeen yurts are available for accommodation and have been built on stilts to protect the waterways, plants and animals. Raised wooden walkways have been constructed to move between the buildings on the campsite. For four nights accommodation, the cost is $1900 for two people. This includes all meals, the use of a guide on selected excursions and free entry into the spectacular Torres del Paine National Park.

Running and Rambling: Ultimate Direction Solitaire Review …

    June 25th, 2010

Prior to my 50-mile race last month, when Stacy at Wilderness Running Company offered up an Ultimate Direction waist pack for me to test out, my immediate thought was, “It’s not going to be as good as my Uno pack.”

The truth was, I already had an Ultimate Direction waist pack that worked pretty well for me. I wear it for pretty much every run that’s in the 1 to 2.5-hour range – three hours or more, and I switch to hydration packs – which means that my Uno pack has seen a LOT of miles on the trail over the years. In fact, on a strict miles-per-dollar scale, the Uno is probably the most worthwhile investment I’ve ever made, second only to the $40 Timex that I use every single day.

Needless to say, I was a bit skeptical that something new would win me over – so in the spirit of compromise, I decided to review both packs: the one I received from WRC, and the one I already had.

The new pack I tested is the Ultimate Direction Solitaire, which combines a low horizontal bottle holder with 100 cubic inches of storage space on top. It’s a good option if you need a little extra cargo capacity for long trail runs.

Positioning of the bottle is somewhat unique in that it’s completely horizontal, laying across your backside instead of being angled upward. The pack comes with a 26-oz bottle featuring Ultimate Direction’s famous kicker valve, which seems to be a “love it or hate it” innovation (I’m not personally crazy about it). The holster is wide enough to hold standard 20- or 24-oz Specialized bottles as well as the factory UD bottle.

Above the bottle holster is a horizontal cargo compartment that is large enough to stash a jacket, a few gadgets, or even another full 20-oz bottle. There’s also a small mesh pocket on the outside of the pack for energy gel (or gel wrappers) or other small items. The whole pack weighs 9.5 oz, so you get a decent amount of storage without sacrificing too much weight – especially when you consider that it’s only 1 ounce heavier than the Uno, but provides about 40% more capacity.

The Solitaire has closed-cell foam padding on the backside, and moisture-wicking padding that stretches around to the front buckles of the stability belt for improved comfort on the run. I have to say that I found a fully-loaded pack to be a little bouncier than I like, and the horizontal positioning of the bottle does take a bit of getting used to. On the other hand, maybe I’m just too accustomed to using the Uno pack for so many years.

And why do I like the Uno so much? For a lot of reasons. At 8.5 oz, it’s fairly lightweight but durable enough to take a beating. I like the upright bottle position that’s equally accessible with both hands; I’ve never been a big fan of angled holsters, and the Uno is one of the few models on the market that isn’t angled. The holster is also compatible with any standard 20- or 24-oz bottle, although the taller size is a bit more noticeable against your low back at times.

I also like having two separate pockets – so I can keep my gels and wrappers separate from my tech gadgets – that are each big enough to hold one or two key essentials. The storage capacity is only about 65 cubic inches, but the contoured zipper pockets allow enough space for the basics. I can fit either a cell phone, or a compact headlamp (most frequently my Petzl Tikka XP2), or four gel packs, or even my compact camera into a single pocket. While the Solitaire would probably be able to carry all that stuff together, I generally don’t need all of those things at once – or if I do, I’m in the “over three hour” category where I’d probably step up to using a hydration pack anyway.

Most of all, I love how the Uno just settles comfortably into the small of my back, almost to the point where I forget it’s there sometimes. It has the same ultra-wicking, foam padded back panel as the Solitaire (although the waist straps aren’t padded), but for me the comfort comes more from having a smaller-profile pack in a natural resting position that remains close to my center of gravity for more efficient running.

In case you haven’t guessed by now, I ended up sticking with my Uno pack during this month’s 50-miler. I carried my camera in one pocket, and energy gels in the other. Between the Uno and my QuickDraw Elite, I had up to 42 oz of fluids with me at all times, and access to everything was a breeze. My goal coming into the race was to carry lighter gear without skimping on fluids or storage, and I felt like those two items accomplished the task wonderfully.

However, my ongoing affection for the Uno isn’t meant to take anything away from the Solitaire, which would be a better choice under different circumstances. From my experience, the Solitaire is a nice option if you need a high volume of fluid but don’t want to add a hand-held pack or upgrade to a hydration pack, or if you’re looking to carry additional water or gear than you can fit into a standard waist-mounted pack, and if you’re comfortable having a somewhat bulkier pack across your backside. The Uno is an almost unbeatable option if you’re looking to travel light and/or fast and only need one or two bare essentials along for the ride.

As I’ve said a few times already, Wilderness Running Company was instrumental in providing these products for me to compare and review – so if you’re in the market for new hydration gear, you can do me a favor by doing some business with WRC. You’re doing yourself a favor as well, since you can save 10% on anything by using coupon code R&R10 at checkout. And to make it even easier, I’ll save you the trouble of scrolling back through the post:

The Ultimate Direction Solitaire retails for $42.

The Ultimate Direction Uno retails for $30.

Previously: the Nathan QuickDraw Elite retails for $25.

Dales cave instructor recalls bid to rescue pupil

    June 4th, 2010

A caving instructor has told a court how he tried to get school pupils out of a rapidly flooding cave in which a 14-year-old boy died.

Tony Boyle was the leader of the group that included Joe Lister who died in Manchester Hole Cave on a school trip to the Yorkshire Dales in 2005.

Mr Boyle told Leeds Crown Court how he was close to drowning as he tried to swim with pupils through a passage.

North Yorkshire County Council denies health and safety charges.

Mr Boyle, an instructor at Bewerely Park Centre, said he was trying to swim with pupils through a passage known as The Crawl after water began rising rapidly inside the cave.

“The water was rising very rapidly.

“It came up to the roof while I was there. I was in a very small space under water and had two students with me.

“I tried to get them through with me, I had hold of them and we tried to force our way through.

“I was starting to lose consciousness and I unfortunately let go.”

Mr Boyle added: “I was very disorientated and close to drowning myself.”

The instructor said he pulled some people from the tunnel – which is 12 metres (39.2 ft) long and less than one metre (3.2 ft) high at its lowest point – and thought everyone had come through but realised one pupil was missing after carrying out a number count.

    ‘Substantial’ rainfall

He said he thought about swimming back through to find Joe but decided it was not the “best course of action” as the water was still rising.

“If I’d got back through I don’t think I could have brought Joe back with me.

“We could have got trapped, leaving the rest of the group stranded.”

Joe was later found by a rescuer with his head torch still on but minus his Wellington boots. He had drowned.

The court heard there had been “substantial” rainfall in the fortnight before the trip but it had not rained for a couple of days prior to the group entering the cave on 14 November.

Mr Boyle said water levels inside the cave were as he would expect at first and he was “happy” and “reassured” by the level of the water.

He told the court he first realised something was “amiss” when the group of 10 pupils and three adults were inside the cave and he noticed the water appeared to be rising.

On leaving the cave, he said the level of the river was “very much the same” as when the group entered.

North Yorkshire County Council denies failing to ensure the health and safety of employees and non-council employees.

LED Lenser, technology and convenience yields survival

Think fast – when you are away from home without easy access to things like light stranded, shelter and water, what are the things you want at your side? In case of sudden your modern home without power to run, such developments as electric lights, can openers and microwave, what do you have on hand to help during the hours or days to return these utilities?

The U.S. government recommends that all citizens should – orhouse or car – 72 Hour Survival Kit, and if you thought the above issues, should not be surprising that two of the first items listed in this kit is a knife and a flashlight. No matter what your emergency may be a source of light and a good board will always be important.

A Swiss boxcutter was a mainstay of survival equipment for decades. More than just a cutting tool, a Swiss army knife well chosen is a survival kit in a compact, folding package. There is much more than having one or two knives and bottle openers that in most of the most cheap knives. Properties that are important in a Swiss boxcutter include:

    – Sharp, durable cutting

    – At least one saw blade

    – A can / bottle opener

A Swiss boxcutter is, strictly speaking, a knife, survival, though. For most experts recommend a fixed blade survivalKnife can be used to cut, saws, knives, hunting, skinning, cleaning, sterilization, and a host of other applications. There are dozens of available styles and types of survival knives, making it easy to choose the best for your application. The most valuable of which combines a sturdy, sharp, fixed blade with hollow handle, with the main points for you, you have an emergency. These items include matches, lighters, aspirin, disinfectant, a small flashlight or signal facilitiesDevice and a pipe. Before choosing a survival knife, you should have your state and city ordinances to ensure that buying a knife, I will not break the law.

If the last time you bought a new torch was more than a few years, you will be surprised to imagine what technology has worked many years in a few. LED technology has given us a new class of LED torches, They door it is only when you need it. LED – Light EmittingDiodes – technology that alarm has been used for decades in things like the clock and digital display, but were always too expensive and too low-powered emergency lights used as a workhorse for the lighting of torches and tasks. As late as 2002, researchers estimated a leader in lighting that LED lighting will be the year for shared use at home for twenty years. A year later he admitted he had grossly miscalculated, because “we …presumption made only gradual progress, and without … important technological breakthrough .. “These findings made it much more convenient for the manufacture of LED lights, and took them in the price range for everyday use.

So why flashlights instead of the town with torches LED? Reasons ranging from the light for a longer battery life. These include:

or LED flashlight with a two-stage processIt provides the light that is closer to natural sunlight. And unlike Typical flashlights go out that if the battery is low, LED flashlights often continue on a daily feature in a dimmer light for hours or even.

O LED bulb torch draws significantly less power, making battery life astronomical – some LED lights provide battery life of 50,000 hours. No more frustration of dead batteries or light that is going to die if youlonger.

o In contrast to typical tungsten light, LED flashlights are rugged enough to withstand is pushed and fell. In tests, the LED flash fell 4-6 feet onto concrete and survived more offers bright light and bright.

or LED flashlights are available in sizes from small to super – small space to hang a keychain full-size utility lights be that as a whole.

Actually is not the only flashlightsLED lighting, can be found in almost emergency. Battery-powered LED lighting, kitchen lighting materials security not only in one, but in areas where the skylight and usually is not reached. Some lamps strategically placed under the counter or LED stick, easy to find pots and pans or food stored in the darkroom. Similarly, the LED lamps mounted on the wall, closet, crawl space or attic can help prevent accidents and make it much easier to findexactly what you’re looking for.

If you have not seen your kit 72 hours is a good time to put together. Today, modern technology offers many ways to ensure that you can walk prepared for any emergency there.

Couple walking to California stops in Parkersburg

    May 1st, 2010

PARKERSBURG – A California couple hiking their way across the American Discovery Trail stopped in Parkersburg Thursday for a bite to eat and a good night’s sleep.

Jerry Bowerman, 62, and Karen Clark, 61, ate dinner at Chams Lebanese Cuisine restaurant downtown after taking in the sights of the Julia-Ann Square Historic District. The retired couple is two months into their 5,000-mile journey on the American Discovery Trail, a non-motorized recreational trail stretching from Delaware to Northern California.

The couple estimates it will take them about two years to reach the California coast.

“We heard about a couple walking the trail in 2001, and right then I thought to myself, I really want to do this,” said Clark. “We decided we would wait until we both retired and then go for it. And now we’re two months into our trip and loving every minute of it. It’s all about setting your mind to something.”

Bowerman said he and his wife of nearly 30 years have always been an adventurous, outdoor-loving couple. Their first date was a backpacking trip, and they have been on many camping and long distance hiking trips since then.

When they broke the news to their three children last year about their plan to walk 5,000 miles from Delaware to California, they got mixed reactions.

“Our oldest son was a little reluctant and maybe a little nervous about us going,” said Bowerman, “But all of our kids have heard us talking about it for so long, so ultimately they were really excited for us.”

The couple lives in Sebastopol, Calif., where Bowerman owned a gardening business and Clark was a public health nurse. After months of preparations, they took a train to Delaware in February and began their journey from coast to coast.

They carry only the bare essentials in their backpacks, including a few clothing items, food and cooking equipment, tents, cell phones, and a laptop computer. The couple camps and stays in motels and bed and breakfasts along the way, but several nights they have stayed with generous strangers who have offered them a room for the night.

“The people we have met are incredible, especially in West Virginia,” said Clark. “People honk and wave at us, and some have given us water and food. Once we asked a store clerk for a drink of water, and he invited us to stay at his house.”

Although some people can hike the entire trail in a year, Bowerman and Clark want to take their time. Occasionally they go off the official trail into nearby towns, or rent a car for the day. Since they’ve been in West Virginia, the couple has traveled through Fort Ashby, Keyser, Canaan Valley and Philippi before reaching Parkersburg.

“We love historic downtowns,” said Clark. “West Virginia is one of the most beautiful states we’ve seen. With the small towns nestled in the hills and the beautiful scenery, we’ve been having the best time just looking at everything. The people here are incredible. We’ve decided that when we finish, we are going to do a good deed in our community every year and dedicate it to the people of West Virginia, for all the kindness they have shown us on our trip.”

Bowerman said he has experienced a whole new perspective of the world around him by walking.

“The scenery is so different from what you see when you are driving. We’ve been taking in so much more detail,” he said. “It’s been quite an adventure.”

Once the winter weather hits in November, the couple plans to take a brief hiatus from their hike and return home for the holidays. They will continue where they left off in the spring of 2011.

Modern Warfare 2 Map Pack 1 Review

    April 15th, 2010

3 Comments Posted by My Robot on March 30, 2010 at 7:45 am

Infinity Ward has been through hell and high water from Modern Warfare 2’s launch to now.  Just 5 short months ago, one of the biggest entertainment releases in history, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 hit the shelves.  For the most part the game has won over critics and gamers alike, with it’s beefy additions to the original Modern Warfare game.  Shortly thereafter, the wheels started to come off the wagon.  It started with the Playstation 3 having a suspect launch, then glitches spread like wildfire, hacking, modding, viruses being spread between gamers, are just a few of the seemingly countless problems that the game has had.  Needless to say, Modern Warfare 2 has dealt with it’s share of criticism since launch.  Today marked the release of The Stimulus Package: Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2’s first downloadable map pack.  Did Infinity Ward redeem themselves?  I think that’s yet to be seen as the game content has only been available for a few hours, but here’s what we thought.

The new maps are great.  They spice up the gameplay exceptionally well.  It is the exact thing that a die hard Call of Duty player needs at this stage of the game.  I would consider myself a big fan of the series. When I need a quick gaming fix I usually lean towards COD,  so the fifteen dollars is pretty well spent.  When you take into consideration how far fifteen dollars goes these days, you are gonna get some mileage out of your purchase. Gaming is entertainment, when I compare it to other forms of entertainment,  I don’t know any other medium that is gonna give me 10-15 hours of fun for that price.  As for the 75 dollars I have spent thus far on the game,  there is pretty decent value there, considering I have gotten well over a couple of days logged into Modern Warfare 2.  The maps are more of the same, alot of angles, elevation, and camping spots.  The one map that stood out to me the most was Bailout.  It really looks like they spent the most time with that one.  There are many nooks and crannies, and it’s gonna take some time to learn them all.  If you have watched the video, Bailout  is the apartment complex. It’s got a ton of variety with long sight lines for snipers and close quarters for the rushers, that map has it all. Not to say that the others were bad, that’s definitely not the case, but Bailout stands tall when comparing the new maps.  The stage design is once again top notch in the three new maps.   If you played CoD 4, you know what you’re getting with Overgrown and Crash, those are two classic maps.  I wasn’t sure if they would work with the new Killstreak Rewards, and to be quite honest it felt a little weird being on the look out for a Chopper Gunner in Overgrown.

hen I downloaded the maps to be met with the cold harsh reality that I couldn’t play them, I was a little bit pissed, to say the least.  After all of the troubles this game has had  I figured that IW had to do it proper on this map pack to regain some consumer confidence.  Well, eventhough it got off to a rocky start, the problems were addressed and fixed fairly quickly.  Over the years, I have seen my favorite games go from champs to festering carcasses of what they once were, due to a simple lack of support.  This  is something you can’t say about Infinity Ward.  They fix the problems that arise in their games fairly quickly.  On the other hand, I would love to play a game that doesn’t break immediately when playing  it for the first time.  That would be a nice change. Overall though, I was more happy that they fixed it so quickly, than I was disappointed that it was broke in the first place.

I also haven’t seen one hacked account playing , so it seems that Infinity Ward has closed some of the existing loopholes that players were taking advantage of .  For example I received confirmation from a friend who told us that the multi perk and weapon exploit is fixed…for now.   I’m sure it will only be a matter of time until new ones arise, but it’s a win for now, and you can’t complain about that.

There are a couple of  bonuses for Map Pack buyers in that there are new game types. There are two stimulus pack lobbies, one which features a variety of traditional game modes on only the new levels, and second is a Hardcore Ricochet Lobby. This lobby features Ricochet Team Deathmatch, Hardcore Search and Destroy, and Hardcore Ricochet Headquarters Pro.  I’m not knocking the new modes as they are playable, but for the most part it was moot (ty) point.  I would much rather have seen that Tactical Nuke game or some variation,  other than the ones they chose to drop with this Map Pack.

For the first time since Modern Warfare 2 has been released I missed World at War.  Nazi Zombies was incredibly fun and added so much value to the DLC package.  Once I really started thinking about it and considering the cost of the new maps,  I realized I paid twice as much, for half the game in this DLC.   As good as the new and old levels are technically,  there’s something really bland about the graphics.  Salvage and Storm are incredibly boring looking.  Bailout is a little better, but it just feels blah.  Then you throw in Crash, which is also amazingly bland, and Overgrown which is probably the best looking of the bunch, and you don’t  have a very visually stunning experience.  The game still looks alright, but you don’t get that sense of something shiny and new as much as you get the feeling of dreary, bland, and dare I say kinda dull.

I love IW, I really do.  I try to be patient with the glitches, and problems, and look at the bright side, where which CoD 6 is one my favorite shooters ever.   After not being able to play when I bought the pack, then finally getting it up and running to find out that I am confined to two playlists, which only play random gametypes, I nearly crapped the bed.  I can only hope that as I am writing this Robert Bowling is sifting through the 375,000 pieces of hate mail and changes are on the way.  It just seems far fetched that a Map Pack can launch without a standard Deathmatch lobby.  As it stands there are two options, both forcing players to play random game types.   No one needs to be force fed a specific mode because its new.  Most people want to play the mode they choose , not play musical chairs trying to jump in a Deathmatch game that just keeps switching to Search and Destroy or vice versa.  Not having the choice to play what I wanted took the air out of the experience for me.   If I wasn’t playing it to review it, I would have turned it off after the first couple of times I was forced to play something I didn’t want.   Who wants to do that?  Not me, and I’m probably gonna hold off on more gameplay until more game modes come into circulation.

If you enjoy Modern Warfare 2,  it’s hard to justify passing up this DLC.  It extends the game as expected, and in time, when more game modes are opened and more people have the pack, it will get inherently better.  Though right now, if you have pressing issues that demand fifteen dollars worth of attention, your money might be spent better there until Infinity Ward takes some of the restrictions off . It’s always good to allow players to actually enjoy the map pack how they see fit.  I like the new modes, I just don’t like the feeling of being forced to play them.   As a whole the content is great! The maps are fun, the old ones are classics, but as the last five months have gone, we’ll just have to wait and see what IW’s next move is.

Under the Tarp: What to Read Whilst Camping

    April 12th, 2010

According to the philosophy my sister and I share, there is nothing so wonderful as a good book. As a result, much time and thought is put into what books to take with us on our camping trip. Being rabid, rapid and prolific readers, we generally try to select as many books as the number of days we are camping. Perhaps a little less if the ones we choose are thick. Most will be fiction, some reference bird books or books on identifying flora and fauna in the area, and even a survival book if it

has interesting stuff to try in it.

But most of the books are fiction.

Great reads, truly great reads, are somewhat hard to come by. Sometimes we can find them on the summer reading list of bookstore handouts; sometimes a trusted friend will recommend one, and sometimes we will find one browsing the shelves of bookstores and second-hand bookstores.  We usually begin our search a couple of months back, and if we find what we like to call “a sure thing”, we will excercise amazing self control and put it in our camping backpacks, refusing to read it until our knees are being gently baked by a wood fire and our backs are being caressed by a woodland  zephyr.

Do take a reference book or two, especially if you have kids. Being able to tell them all about that birch tree over there by your tent is a great way to spend time with them, and it increases their appreciation for the natural world around them.

You would be surprised what you yourself learn, as well.
