Woman hoping for return of her motorcycle mailbox

Woman hoping for return of her motorcycle mailbox

Courtesy MiLissa Ospina MiLissa Ospina was shocked and hurt to discover her one-ofa kind mailbox had been stolen from the front of her Santa Susana Knolls home on June 8.

The mailbox, crafted from the gas tank of a 1963 Harley- Davidson Sportster, was given to her as a gift more than 14 years ago by her friend Craig Williams, who is now deceased.

“Craig was a vintage motorcycle guy who was famous for fixing bikes and making perfect, straight frames,” Ospina said. “I always admired his beautiful motorcycles, and one year for Christmas he surprised me with a custom-made mailbox he made out of the vintage parts.”

Eventually the uncommon work of art grew into a neighborhood “landmark,” said the mother of four.

“Neighbors would use my mailbox to give directions to Knolls Elementary School because it can be hard to find,” Ospina said.

‘WHERE’S MY MAILBOX?’—Santa Susana Knolls resident MiLissa Ospina, far right, stands with her son Jonathan, middle, and his friend where her one-of-a-kind mailbox once stood. ERICA ANDREWS/Acorn Newspapers Ospina’s daughter Selena and her friends would play on the mailbox after school because it came with black handle grips, a rearview mirror and foot pedals. Selena also helped her mother decorate the box, an annual tradition among family members and neighbors.

“After Sept. 11 we painted it red and added flags, and this year it was hot pink with skulls, a peace sign and white numbers added by my neighbor’s 4-yearold daughter,” Ospina said.

Year after year residents coming down Katherine Road have passed by the unusual mailbox, admiring its eccentricity, especially fitting for a neighborhood like the Knolls.

“I drove by it every day,” said neighbor Danielle Oberosler. “It’s really sad because everyone here has something cool and unique about their house, and it’s upsetting that someone would take that away.”

Ospina said the mailbox went missing while she was inside her home. Earlier that day, she said she’d seen some local maintenance workers having their lunch nearby.

She asked them if they would prefer to eat their lunch at her picnic table, and when she came out a few minutes later, the mailbox was gone.

Ospina said she believes her mailbox was taken for its vintage parts, in order to make electric scooters or bikes. She said she’s contacted all local Harley shops to see if the parts have turned up, but to no avail.

Knolls resident Bibbi Straudberg, 20, said the theft has left the entire community feeling violated.

“It’s shocking to me that someone would go to that extreme to take someone’s mailbox,” she said. “It makes me upset and wonder what the neighborhood is coming to.”

Although Ospina filed a report with the Simi Valley Police Department and the United States Postal Inspection Service, no leads have turned up.

Renee Focht, postal inspector for the postal inspection service, said mailbox theft is a serious crime with harsh consequences.

“Stealing a mailbox is a federal offense, and you can be fined or imprisoned for up to three years,” Focht said.

Focht, who is based in Pasadena, said mailbox theft is fairly rare.

Anyone with information about the missing mailbox is asked to contact the inspection service at (877) 876-2455 or visit https://postalinspectors.uspis.gov.

“I’m just really sad someone would take my mailbox because that’s all I had left from my friend Craig, and everyone in the community knew and remembered him when they saw it,” Ospina said. “It probably means nothing to the person who stole it, but to us it meant everything.”

Motorcycle Kits: An Awesome Way To Create The Bike You've Always …

June 12th, 2010

Motorcycle kits are an awesome way that enables bike enthusiasts to have the bike they’d always wanted even if they haven’t got that much money to spend. A huge range of various motorcycle kit is available to buy on the Internet, and also in specialist outlets. An extra bonus of building your own bike from scratch is that you will have a much better understanding of how bike works which will help you down the road with maintenance.

When you are choosing a kit, I would strongly recommend to not just look at the price alone. A common mistake that many people make is trying to get the cost down as far as possible, without looking into the quality of the kit that they are buying. If you try and drive the price down to low, you are increasing the probability that the quality of the parts won’t be as good: which will cost you in the end through having to replace parts.

Once you’ve chosen the right kit for you, then you have just completed the first step of many in creating a unique machine. From here on in a lot of owners will be adding and taking off parts, changing the paint job, and all sorts of other mini projects that will improve the look and be performance of the machine. It’s a long hard journey to get the bike just perfect, but the rewards are fantastic. The feeling you get when you ride through a busy street and heads turn in awe and amazement can be very addictive.

When your kit arrives, you will find that basically you have a lot of boxes of parts, and some instructions. It can seem more than a little overwhelming to begin with, but just by taking instructions and following them, you will start to see progress. It takes some patience to begin with, and you have to get into the habit of working in a particular way in order not to miss place components or make rookie mistakes. One tip that I can’t emphasise enough is to not open the packets all at once, but to keep them sealed up and all in one place until you need them for assembly.

Once the initial build is complete and you have everything running smoothly,  the easiest way to set your kit bike apart from others is to give it a custom paint job. If you don’t know how to spray paint, then you will need to practice to get the finished just right.  I would recommend that you brush up your skills on some sheets of plastic or whatever before you start on your bike. I have found lots of useful information about spray painting techniques on YouTube.

At the end of the day, motorcycle kits are a way of saving time more than anything. You could in theory by all the pieces you need to build a kit bike by individually searching motorcycle stores. However, in practice  to avoid parts not being compatible with each other, and to save you forgetting to buy anything, a motorcycle kit takes a lot of the effort out of the selection of components, and bundles them in one convenient package. The instructions are also a godsend, as it can be a bit of a nightmare trying to work out why your custom motorcycle kit won’t start, especially if no one else has tried to assemble the exact same parts.

For more information about motorcycle kits and how to build custom bikes, please visit the Motorcycle Kits Blog. We have lots of useful information, especially tips about Chopper Kits.
