New microtweezers may build tiny ‘MEMS’ structures

January 28th, 2012

The microtweezers might be used to assemble structures in microelectromechanical systems, or MEMS, which contain tiny moving parts. MEMS accelerometers and gyroscopes currently are being used in commercial products. A wider variety of MEMS devices, however, could be produced through a manufacturing technology that assembles components like microscopic Lego pieces moved individually into place with microtweezers, said Cagri Savran (pronounced Chary Savran), an associate professor of mechanical engineering at Purdue University.

“We’ve shown how this might be accomplished easily, using new compact and user-friendly microtweezers to assemble polystyrene spheres into three-dimensional shapes,” he said.

Research findings were detailed in a paper that appeared online in December in the Journal of Microelectromechanical Systems, or JMEMS. the paper was written by Savran, mechanical engineering graduate students Bin-Da Chan and Farrukh Mateen, electrical and computer engineering graduate student Chun-Li Chang, and biomedical engineering doctoral student Kutay Icoz.

The new tool contains three main parts: a thimble knob from a standard micrometer, a two-pronged tweezer made from silicon, and a “graphite interface,” which converts the turning motion of the thimble knob into a pulling-and-pushing action to open and close the tweezer prongs. no electrical power sources are needed, increasing the potential for practical applications. Other types of microtweezers have been developed and are being used in research. However, the new design is simpler both to manufacture and operate, Savran said.

The new microtweezers might be used to assemble structures in microelectromechanical systems, or MEMS, which contain tiny moving parts. the researchers have shown how the device can be used to assemble tiny polystyrene spheres, each with a diameter of 40 micrometers, at left, into three-dimensional shapes. the device also might be used to weigh tiny particles by placing them onto the tip of a structure called a microcantilever, at right. (Birck Nanotechnology Center photo)

The design contains a one-piece “compliant structure,” which is springy like a bobby pin or a paperclip. most other microtweezers require features such as hinges or components that move through heat, magnetism or electricity, complex designs that are expensive to manufacture and relatively difficult to operate in various media, he said.

The tweezers make it feasible to precisely isolate individual stem cell spheres from culture media and to position them elsewhere. Currently, these spheres are analyzed in large groups, but microtweezers could provide an easy way to study them by individually selecting and placing them onto analytical devices and sensors.

“We currently are working to weigh single micro particles, individually selected among many others, which is important because precise measurements of an object’s mass reveal key traits, making it possible to identify composition and other characteristics,” Savran said. “This will now be as easy as selecting and weighing a single melon out of many melons in a supermarket.”

That work is a collaboration with the research group of Timothy Ratliff, the Robert Wallace Miller Director of Purdue’s Center for Cancer Research.

The microtweezers also could facilitate the precision printing of chemical or protein dots onto “microcantilevers,” strips of silicon that resemble tiny diving boards. the microcantilevers can be “functionalized,” or coated with certain chemicals or proteins that attract specific molecules and materials. because they vibrate at different frequencies depending on what sticks to the surface, they are used to detect chemicals in the air and water.

Generally, microcantilevers are functionalized to detect one type of substance by exposing them to fluids, Savran said. However, being able to microprint a sequence of precisely placed dots of different chemicals on each cantilever could make it possible to functionalize a device to detect several substances at once. Such a sensing technology also would require a smaller sample size than conventional diagnostic technologies, making it especially practical.

The new microtweezers are designed to be attached easily to “translation stages” currently used in research. These stages are essentially platforms on which to mount specimens for viewing and manipulating. unlike most other microtweezers, the new device is highly compact and portable and can be easily detached from a platform and brought to another lab while still holding a micro-size object for study, Savran said.

The two-pronged tweezer is micromachined in a laboratory called a “clean room” with the same techniques used to create microcircuits and computer chips. the research was based at the Birck Nanotechnology Center in Purdue’s Discovery Park.

more information: A Compact Manually Actuated Micromanipulator, Bin-Da Chan, Farrukh Mateen, Chun-Li Chang, Kutay Icoz, and Cagri A. Savran, Journal of Microelectromechanical Systems.

ABSTRACT This letter reports a compact, versatile, and user-friendly micromanipulator that uses an elastically deformable silicon microtweezer to grab microentities and a micrometer head for rotational manual actuation. the micro-/macroconnection is achieved via a graphite interface that results in a compact and portable design and placement on most translation stages. the system, which can operate in both air and liquid and transport objects between the two media, has a wide range of applications. We demonstrate but a few of them, including in situ construction of microstructures in 3-D, isolation and placement of individual microparticles on designated spots on sensors, on-demand microcontact printing of microparticles, and manipulation of live stem cell spheres. Gillis getting helped by Pain

December 1st, 2011

If Mitch Gillis survives the little tournament known as Six Days In Hell next week, he can thank the skeleton.

No, not the boney frame inside his body, but the Olympic event for lunatics who fly down the bobsleigh track head first on a tiny sled.

It was a chance meeting between Gillis and three-time Olympian and silver medalist Jeff Pain that played a huge part in turning around the golfer’s season.

“I was playing the Canadian Tour event in Calgary and I put in for private housing, which is something I never do,” Gillis reflected. “I ended up staying at Jeff’s house.”

Since then, Pain has provided counseling for Gillis on everything from how to prepare for an event to what to eat to goal-setting. and it’s worked exceptionally well. Gillis made it through the first two stages of the PGA Tour’s Qualifying Tournament, the official name of the event, and will play the final stage beginning next Wednesday. The top 25 finishers earn status on the PGA Tour for 2012 while the remaining golfers get varying levels of status on the Nationwide Tour.

It’s the first time the product of Williams Lake, B.C., a town of just over 10,000 that sits 540 kilometres north of Vancouver, has advanced to the final stage. He’s one of nine Canadians who will take part in the hunt for PGA Tour cards.

Remarkably, his progress comes after what he termed as a terrible campaign on the Canadian Tour.

“It was just a horrible year,” he said. “I actually took the entire month of August off, put the clubs away for a while and had to think about what I wanted to do.

“I was either going to try to keep playing the Canadian Tour and try to keep my status or shut it down and prepare for U.S. tour school.”

He chose the latter and spent a long stretch with his coach, T.R. Marritt, another Williams Lake product who is the director of instruction at La Costa.

Gradually, Gillis’s game came around to where his ball-striking was back on track and then one final piece of the puzzle fell into place.

“I was watching the PGA Tour playoffs,” Gillis said, “and there was a stat that 20 per cent of the players were using a belly putter. I’d putted really badly that day so I went right out and bought a belly putter. It was great – I’ve been making bombs ever since.”

Gillis has sent congratulation notes to some of the Group of Nine but for the most part, will remain on his own when he gets to La Quinta, Calif., and the PGA West complex where the Q-School will go. It’s part of his plan, he said, to stay focused on this ultimate goal.

“A lot of people have been passing on congrats and saying that at worst, I’m going to be on the Nationwide Tour,” said Gillis. “But I don’t want that, I’m going in with the goal of winning this thing. I think that’s what you have to do.”

If he does that, he’ll follow in the footsteps of another Canadian who has had a pretty good career. Mike Weir won Q-School in 1998 and Gillis would love to become the second Canadian to reach that goal.

And it’s a heck of a lot easier than the skeleton.

Progress Report: Mates Of State – Stereogum

August 29th, 2011

Name: Mates of StateProgress Report: Indie-rock’s most reliable pop twosome readies the release of Mountaintops.

Jason Hammel and Kori Gardner have been making beautiful music together — both as a band and as a real-life married couple — since 1997. as far as partnerships go, theirs has been a pretty fruitful one, so far yielding three EPs, six studio albums, and two children. Fourteen years deep into their career the band can now rightly consider themselves bonafide veterans of the music industry, having forged a career solidly on the back of over a decade of nearly non-stop touring.

The band’s soon to be released seventh album, Mountaintops, is the result of nearly two year’s worth of recording in over six different studios. as hooky and catchy as anything the band has ever done, Mountaintops is also the sound of a band taking a minute to stop and look around at just how far they’ve come.

STEREOGUM: What can you tell me about how Mountaintops was made and where it was made and what the experience was like?

JASON: This one kind of took a while for some reason. we started writing about a year and a half ago. we needed some isolated writing time, so we rented this rehearsal space from some friends of ours who are in a band that was above this skatepark, but it was upstairs and it didn’t have any heat. So we brought our instruments up there and we were up there writing in our winter jackets and hats. I think initially, we wrote four or five songs up there and we were kind of happy with half of those, but then we were like, “This is miserable and cold. Let’s find a different vibe to finish this.” So then we went back to our house and then I think we took a month off because we were like, “we don’t know where these songs are going. we don’t see a common thread here.” when you make a record, at least for us, we start writing and then we see what is just naturally occurring and what the themes are and that sort of thing. So then we took a couple of months off and we were like, “where is this going?” Eventually we found a spark with another writing thread. So we felt like recording some of these. It’s kind of indicative of the whole writing process being pretty convoluted. We’d go to Brooklyn and record some of it in our friend’s studio and then we’d go home and overdub a bunch of it in our home studio and finally we had eleven or twelve songs and we could really see what this was all about. they really started to all come together and be this big thing, and thematically pointed in the same direction. So then we took all these songs that we recorded and we took them with Chris Coady over to new York and we mixed them over the course of three weeks. Finally after throwing everything in the pot, we felt that we had a really good stew. we felt like, “Alright, we’ve got a really good record here.” it took a long time.

STEREOGUM: All told, how long was that process?

JASON: I think we started writing in January of 2010, so it was a year and a half ago. then we didn’t really mix them until December 2010. it seems like it was even longer than that. it took forever.

STEREOGUM: were you guys touring and playing shows intermittently during that time also?

JASON: Kind of. we knew it was taking a long time, so that’s when we did the covers album. we felt we needed something to show for all this time that was wasted. we also wanted to start producing our records mostly ourselves. So we decided to make a covers record and do it all ourselves, except the mixing. So we recorded that all ourselves in our home studio. So we released that and did a month tour. The rest of the time we were just writing for Mountaintops.

STEREOGUM: I’ve always been amazed with how much you guys tour. How do you deal with downtime? your kids are getting older, so you must need to be home a lot more now.

JASON: Yeah. when we first started we would tour nine months out of the year for the first few years, so I think people kind of know us like that. now, depending on the record cycle, we’ll do one month out of the year touring just because it’s fun and we like to play live and then the rest of the time we really like to focus on writing and aside from making music, there’s a million things we like to do.

STEREOGUM: where do you live?

JASON: Connecticut. We’re just like 50 miles up I-95 from new York.

STEREOGUM: How do you guys typically work when you’re writing songs? do you try to mix it up whenever you start a new record or do things differently in some way?

JASON: yes, we try to mix up the process in a big way for each record, otherwise we feel like we could get stuck in a rut. That’s partly the reason we love Peter Katis and he made Re-Arrange Us and he mixed the covers album and we actually started to record Mountaintops with him, but we just started to feel like it was the same process and it would be much more similar to Re-Arrange Us than we would like it to be. So then, we were like, “We’re not doing it like this. We’re just gonna go home and work on this ourselves.” A lot of it had to do with just being really self sufficient in the recording process. I think that kind of affected the writing process a lot too. we would end up writing directly on the computer rather then the way we used to do it, which was just sitting down at our instruments. we would come up with a part and put it together with another part and then the song was done. but for this one, we would write maybe a part or two, put it down and record and then add a vocal to it or add some other kind of keyboards. we would maybe add some percussion to it or have a friend come in and play trumpet on it. it would take on a life of its own. then we’d go back and re-edit that and change the part that way, internally rather than on the instruments.

STEREOGUM: that keeps it interesting. It’s important to do that. I love duos and I love the idea that two people can produce this really big sound and play around with how much dynamic music two people can create. For the last record you guys did some shows with a full band setup, right?

JASON: we did it on Re-Arrange Us. we brought a string section and then for the covers album we had a trumpet player and guitar player, and we’re actually doing that again on this tour, with those same two people to build up the live show. We’ll be able to pull off a lot of the overdubs that we did on the record live. our thing live is to always sound like the record. we don’t want the live show to be any lesser than the albums.

STEREOGUM: well that must also be kind of fun. After touring for so long with just the two of you, it must be fun to play with more people and play around with the arrangements and stuff.

JASON: it frees us up. Sometimes I just want to grab the microphone and sing a song, and when there are only two people in the band you can’t do that. You can’t even hardly move. You’re glued to the microphone and the drum kit and if you move in any direction you could be away from the floor tom, you know? By the way, Kori is here to so if you want to ask her any questions as well, it’s totally cool.

STEREOGUM: I think the last time I talked to you guys was when you played at that Visionaire party in NYC, which was a long time ago. I remember talking then about how you were trying to figure out how to still tour and do all the band stuff with also being able to bring your kids with you. How does that work for you now?

JASON: Really at the end of the day it just comes down to scheduling. It’s not any different than going to class and holding a part time job at a coffee shop, ya know? now one of our kids is in second grade, so we have to work out our tour schedule with her school schedule. our hard and fast rule is that we’re never away from our kids for more than a week. So there’s that, and she can’t miss school that much. So we usually tour two weeks on, three weeks off, two weeks on, and she’ll come on and off the tour depending on what’s going on with school. It’s just scheduling really and if you want to make it happen you can.

STEREOGUM: I’ve been cleaning out my record collection and I was looking at all of your old albums in my wall of CDs. it got me thinking about all these bands that emerged around the time you guys started and how many of those bands don’t exist anymore.

JASON: Most of them. About 99% of them don’t.

STEREOGUM: What do you think has been the key to your longevity or being able to do this as your career? do you have any sense of how or why that’s happened?

JASON: we just insist. This is what we want to do. This is what we choose to do and we’re not going to give up on it ever. not to say that the other people didn’t want that too, but I guess they just didn’t want it as bad as us, because we’re not stopping. This is what we want to do and what we’re going to do. That’s pretty much it.

STEREOGUM: That’s a good approach to take to it. It’s been many, many years of hard work with a lot of traveling too. It’s interesting you said it took a while for the thread of this record to reveal itself. now that it’s done and it’s about to be released, do you have a better sense of what this record is really about?

JASON: Definitely. I think it’s kind of how you described it, how most of these people aren’t still here, where with us it’s more about resilience and perseverance. It’s not just as a band, but as a person, and the theme of Mountaintops, we both started doing martial arts and meditating and a lot of those themes and philosophies — about how you manage to keep on keeping on — kept coming up. You’re climbing and climbing and trying to get to this peak and you get there, and you’re at the top of this peak, and you enjoy it for a little while. then you look out and you see 500 more peaks that you want to get to so you start back down and climbing up again. It’s just about living and redemption, and having perseverance to keep on doing what you want to do.

STEREOGUM: That’s nice. It’s very much in keeping with how you’ve worked as a band, so it’s very appropriate. The record comes out in September. What will the rest of the year be like for you guys?

JASON: well, we’re pretty much going to be touring for a year. we want to work this record harder than we’ve worked any record before it. we feel like it’s really good and people will really respond to it; so we’re going to try our hardest and do it right.

STEREOGUM: So you’re in the middle of planning a video right now?

JASON: we shot part of it. It’s animated. That’s what is being worked on now.

STEREOGUM: Cool. So do you have a sense when that will be done and when it will be out?

JASON: It’s a lot of work, but we’re shooting for the release date of the record. It’s going to be for the first single, “Palomino.” Hey, do you want to talk to Kori for a minute? She’s right here.

STEREOGUM: Sure!

JASON: I’ll put her on. Good to talk to you.

KORI: Hey.

STEREOGUM: I know you guys are really busy now. I know you’re working on this video and sort of gearing up to getting back into the swing of doing a lot of press. are you freaking out?

KORI: Yeah. I have these sort of strange little panic attacks, like, “Oh my god! our life is about to go crazy.” This is the longest we’ve had being at home. The good thing about it is I’m very excited about it. I’m not dreading anything. I’m not dreading being on the road. when we were touring all the time with little breaks it was kind of like, “when are we going to be normal?” I’m definitely excited it’s happening soon.

STEREOGUM: You guys have seemed to figure it out pretty nicely, but is it hard to strike a balance between the two? Home with the kids and being on the road. I know so many bands that kindof wig out when they come back from tour because they’re not used to being at home or they know they’re not going to be at home for very long.

KORI: I think that’s very hard to figure out. It’s been long enough for us. You know, we could probably play more shows. we could probably tour for eight months straight and come home with double the amount of money and probably play to double the amount of people by the end of it, but we’ve found out that you can’t really put a price on that sanity you get from being at home a little longer. Especially with kids and stuff. I hate to bring that into it, but we’re trying. as crazy and inconsistent as it is, I think you have to realize what the actual number of days that makes you sane is on a break. I mean if it’s only five, then you’re doing pretty well. if you need two weeks at home, fine, take the two weeks. After doing this for this long, we know what our limits are. we know we can do three weeks on the road, and then we need a break. It’s a hard balance. I feel like we re-evaluate after everything and if everybody is happy still we’re like, “ok. that worked,” — but if it didn’t work for someone in the family, if it was hard on them, then we can’t do it that way again.

STEREOGUM: well he was explaining to me the ark of this record and how it was made and how it was written. in comparison to your back catalogue, do you think of this as being a difficult record to make?

KORI: I don’t think it was difficult. I think it took a lot longer, but I think we have a lot more invested in this somehow. I feel like this one we took the reigns in a lot of the situations. I feel like for the first time in a long time, that made pretty much every decision about this record was ours. it sounds like it should always be that way but in reality, you’re in the studio and you trust the producer to be like, “Fine, that idea is good.” we were very much like, “no.” We’re going to record this at home and then we’re going to bring it to someone else, and then we’re going to tell them what we want to do with it, and if it doesn’t work out we’re re-doing it. It’s difficult in the sense that I have no idea what the end result is. I’m so immersed in it. That’s the only reason it’s difficult, I think. Otherwise, its kind of fun being so involved for so long with this record.

STEREOGUM: I often find it difficult to call something done and walk away from it. is it hard to know when to stop?

KORI: Yea, especially when you’re recording your own stuff. I think you can add too much and I think that’s the worst position to be in. You have too much and then what do you pull out? then you have to just scrap it and start over. This is also the first time we didn’t put every song we recorded on the record. that was hard for me. The one song that got left off the record, I felt had the most heart for me. it didn’t work. it didn’t come out the way I wanted it to. It’s definitely a hard part of the process I think.

STEREOGUM: I was asking Jason this very same question: What do you think has been the key to your success as a band? is it just a matter of working hard and not stopping?

KORI: I think people think that, “I’m a great musician and I write great songs and that’s all it is.” It’s not. You have to have perseverance. You have to have the drive. There are two things that I think happened with us, with the whole Lawrence, Kansas thing and how we kept going. I think one of them is that we left. It’s really easy to get stuck in that small pond and there are so many musicians that are still making music, but they’re not really pushing it anywhere. So, we left. San Francisco was an entirely different scene and people were so supportive and everyone was doing stuff, more so than a smaller town. The other thing was, I’ve always felt if this was just me, just my songs, my vision was the one driving it, then I wouldn’t be doing it. There’s no way I would have had the drive alone. It’s Jason’s personality. He’s really one of those people that has to finish everything to completion. I’ll have twenty ideas all half finished at one time. I think it’s either his personality, or the combination of two people, being like, “Hey, we started this thing. Why would we stop half way.”? I think when people are making amazing music and they hear that they’re great or they’re supported by a couple other bands in their town, I think the hardest thing is to go somewhere else and see if I can continue, you know?

STEREOGUM: Yeah. I’m always amazed by bands here in new York that manage to make a go of it because it’s so difficult, so expensive, and so competitive. You have to really want to do it.

KORI: Yeah. That’s the drive. You’re not just doing it because you want to play a song for your own ears. You really want to make this your life. new York would be a lot harder. I mean, we started in a place where we could practice in a basement and our rent was $200 a month. I don’t know how new York bands start. I couldn’t do it.

STEREOGUM: The idea of getting back on the press train, having your picture taken, and all of that business; has that side of it gotten easier and less weird for you over the years?

KORI: I guess interviews are easier because it’s just, like, be real. It’s just weird sometimes when people are asking strange questions and it’s obvious that they know nothing about the music or who you are. I don’t know. I really didn’t come into this to be on the stage and perform. My favorite part is writing and creating and the way to keep that going is to do the other stuff. its just sort of par for the course. It’s easy to get very critical when you see pictures of yourself and all that. What I think we’ve really tried to change this time around is that everything visually comes out of, we’re not visual artists, but teaming with visual artists, people that take pictures, or people that take films. Really keeping the art alive in this project, even when it comes down to press photos, we pick people that we think offer something different then just a photographer. For the video, this guy we’re working with, he’s an insane artist. He works in a way that I’ve never really seen anybody work and we would use him for everything we do if we could. This time around we’re making sure that we pay attention to that and not let anything fly.

STEREOGUM: It’s harder to do than people realize.

KORI: Yeah. it takes the right people. it took us twelve years to find the right people.

STEREOGUM: well, the record sounds great. Congrats.

KORI: Thanks. We’re stuck in the middle of it. Some days I think it sounds like crap and some days I think it’s the best we’ve done. lately I think it’s the best thing we’ve ever done.

Bangkok Post : Let the journey begin

July 7th, 2011

Hilton Hotel & Resort continues the rapid expansion of its new global spa concept with the opening of eforea:spa at Hilton.

The exquisitely romantic treatment room for two.

The first in Thailand, eforea spa at the Millennium Hilton Bangkok is poised to stand apart by presenting a transformative spa experience with inspired Thai twists. with 11 exquisitely decked out treatment rooms, the riverfront spa is equipped with a tropical courtyard garden, a breezy transition lounge and a sunny spa deck.

At ephoria spa, indulgence is offered in three different styles – light, medium and heavy.

The light selection, officially dubbed “The Escape Journey”, is offered through a collection of exotic Aboriginal treatments using certified organic spa products from Australia.

The medium one, listed under “The Essential Journey”, is made up of powerful, technologically advanced treatments that promise to provide instant visible results. while the last category, the most substantial of all in terms of re-energisation, is “The Men’s Journey”. both body and facial treatments are specially designed for male guests to offer resolute fixing of problems experienced by most men.

However, with popular programmes including Total Sport Massage that helps alleviate muscle soreness and Ultimate De-stress Treatment using a warm bamboo stick to give heavier massage pressure, that doesn’t mean this category of treatment is prohibited among ladies. A number of female guests are reported to enjoy the heavy massage from the men’s menu.

Facial session using micro current electricity.

The menu, which is well designed to cater to various needs of customers, is the thing I like most at eforia. The spa also has a number of extra treatments at attractive prices. For example, a 20-minute add-on Express Lifting provides a collagen boosting using a laser at only 250 baht, while Ageless Hand, a combination of hand scrubbing, massage and mask, costs 500 baht.

Mainly to cater to my needs at that moment, from the facial treatment menu I picked eforea’s 90-minute signature Correction Facial with microcurrent (3,000 baht) which promised to corrects skin concerns such as fine lines, uneven skin tone and sagging, so I could enjoy an upcoming weekend party with a radiant, fresh and firm face. The facial pampering was to be followed by a 60-minute Meditation Massage (2,200 baht) simply for complete indulgence.

After the plan for my whole afternoon was tailored, I was directed to the locker room where I changed before being walked to the treatment room in a bathrobe.

To best accommodate my current mood, prior to lying on the spa bed, I was invited to smell three kinds of massage oil before I could select the aroma that made me feel most relaxed. then the therapist asked me to close my eyes and let go of my emotional stress – as the delicate vapour of burnt Australian leaves wafted by my nose.

Then the 150-minute journey officially began when I lied face down ready for the meditation massage (I had expected the facial would come first). The body treatment focused on instilling a deep sense of mental and physical relaxation and aimed to help heal the overworked, overtired and sleep-deprived individual.

The lounging area where guests can linger and enjoy herbal drinks after the treatment.

Mainly using the palms rather than the finger pressure, the therapist worked her hands rhythmically on my body. following an ancient Aboriginal massage technique, her seemless movement is believed to reduce muscle and mental tension and enable the body to start healing itself.

After an hour it was time for the facial care. The result-orientated treatment started with deep cleansing and multi-acid exfoliation to prepare the skin for the procedure which was to come.

After my eyes were sealed shut with thick cotton pads, the bright laser beam travelled around my face with the purpose of clearing the system of excess fluid and toxins, boost collagen, firm the facial silhouette, tighten pores and eliminate the dark and red spots. then a microelectric current was used to push pure vitamin C into the skin with the purpose to strengthen the elasticity and prevent premature ageing.

The facial treatment was finished off with hydrating peel-off masque and acupressure scalp massage.

After the session has ended, guests can relax at the spa’s riverside lounging area where herbal drinks is served. and my journey was wrapped up perfectly with a cup of hot herbal tea.

Eforea Spa is located in the south wing of Millenium Hilton Bangkok on Charoen Nakhon Road. it opens 9am-10pm. call 02-442-2297.

Viewing MFA exhibit is enriching experience

April 27th, 2011

By Catherine Carter April 16, 2011 12:00 AM

The echoing chambers of a seashell. the tragic mystery of Alzheimer’s disease. the oppressive societies described in Orwell’s novels. the relationship between the weather and our emotions.

Sterling silver and freshwater pearls. Crushed peanut shells. Stacks of velvet strips. Buttons strung on lengths of yarn.

These topics and materials are among the variety of explorations on view at UMass Dartmouth’s University Art Gallery in New Bedford, where 15 graduate students from the College of Visual and Performing Arts are now exhibiting their master’s theses.

The show was curated by David B. Boyce, who spent a week visiting the degree candidates’ studios to discuss their artistic intentions and help gather their artworks into cohesive presentations. In organizing the exhibit, Boyce was sensitive to the gallery layout, which ranges from sun-drenched, wide-open spaces to quiet, secluded corners. he took care both to highlight each individual voice and to consider visual connections from one participant’s work to the next.

The result is an impressive display revealing the long hours of soul searching and technical discovery that each student has poured into the graduate experience.

Kim Barry, a painting major, created a series of larger-than-life conch shell studies in muted purple edged in orange, using oil paint and oil pastels. Fibers major Jenn Brantley’s multiple rows of fabric strips, stacked six feet high against the wall in a range of earth and skin tones, suggest both geological stratification and layers of life experience.

Melanie Cataldo, an illustration major, presents pages from her children’s book “Between the Pilings,” a sequence of mixed-media images telling the story of a whale saving the lives of villagers. Jewelry/metals major Dha-Mee Hahn fashions sterling silver into elegant and witty gender-specific jewelry, displayed against T-shirt-shaped silhouettes. Men are offered a “Toothpick Rack no. 2″ pin, including actual toothpicks, while women can wear “Strike anywhere,” a curved brooch holding a match.

Graphic design major Erik Duhaime Kowalski documented his daily life for one month, creating 30 sleek digital collages from each of the day’s photographs, and finally uniting them in a hardcover book titled “30 posters in 30 days.” Alison Lutz, a drawing major, designed a series of large mixed-media portraits, including “Cigarette and Striped Shirt,” in which the elusive model’s face is concealed by cast shadows, a lock of hair, and her hand holding a smoke.

Graphic design major Paula Mailloux exhibits “Memory Forest,” an installation that refers to Alzheimer’s disease. Multiple rows of buttons, once belonging to her grandmother who worked as a seamstress and later suffered from the illness, have been strung on embroidery thread and hung in dense ceiling-to-floor clusters. Claudine Metrick, a painting major, displays a grouping of square mixed-media panels composed of collaged elements, lines of raw stitching, and rich surfaces in earthy hues mixed with jewel tones.

Painting major Mellissa Morris’ series on paper uses muted and vibrant colors in landscape formats to describe a variety of stormy emotional states, with titles such as “Lament” and “Sigh.” Arlynn Nobel, a ceramics major, crafted a grouping of undulating, carved-edged vessels, open-topped or lidded like crowns, in glowing glazes.

Michele Noiset, majoring in illustration, used soft pastel strokes on paper to create a haunting series of drawings depicting scenes of dystopian societies from classic literature. Painting major Hayley Perry allows the considered angles of her torn-paper collages in foggy gray and fiery orange to burst forth in a dramatic trio of painted paper assemblages.

Sculpture major Christopher F. Rego brings the miserable condition of allergies to life in a humorous gathering of giant soft-sculptures like the peanut-encrusted “See Food,” and “Don’t Hold Your Breath,” an oversized pair of red satin lungs sprinkled with dust, hair and lint. Ceramics major Julie Richmond has fabricated an over-the-top world of indoor/outdoor accoutrements, including a looking glass, a birdbath, a rolling cart and an interactive pulley, in wildly colored and ornately styled combinations of ceramic, plaster and fabric.

Addressing the recent death of her father, drawing major Renee Newell Russo identifies her loss in a sketched sequence showing the loved one’s face on translucent vellum with barely discernible text underneath.

The exhibit remains on display until May 12. the University Art Gallery, located at 715 Purchase St. in New Bedford, is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., except Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. for more information, call (508) 999-8555.

Students build robot for competition

March 28th, 2011

Students build robot for competitionrobot kitSix weeks from now, a group of St. Francois County students willdesign, build, program and fine-tune a robot that is ready forcompetition.

The Benefits of Robot Kits  robot kit

Article by Jonathan Brunet

Since the conception of the human brain, technology has tried it bests to duplicate such marvels. Robots have always been innovative options for humans as far as intellect and performance are concerned. This is the reason why most people who are behind the technology of robots have created robot kits in order to pacify the humanity’s need for a power-driven device that will perform the same tasks that humans do.

RobotShop distribute robot kits that provide for the personal needs of common people, such as housekeepers for instance. With robot kits, people can easily learn how to create a particular robot. In this way, people will be able to understand the expertise and the equipment behind the concept of robotics.

One of the best things about building and using robot kits is that every step entails a particular subject that people will learn to appreciate. For instance, by simply placing the right parts to their right places, you can learn something about electronics, physics, or any forms of artificial intelligence.

To know more about robot kits, here is a list of some of the available kits that you can try out:

1. Beginner Robot Kits

As the name implies, these robot kits are especially made for those who are still new to robotics. these kits are specially designed to educate and orient those people who are interested to try robotics. the process is so easy that even nine-year old children can try building these kits.

For as low as .99, children, who are 9 years and older, can already start creating their very own robots. the Owi Turbo 3000 Robot Kit is one of those monster trucks that can provide your children with more features than just a toy. it has three styles of driving force: air propulsion, direct motor drive, and the solar power. but the latter is optional.

This type of robot kit is particularly made for most school projects, robotic classes, or as gifts for young tikes.

2. Intermediate Robot Kits

These robot kits are principally made for robot hobbyist who has advance knowledge in robotics. This means that they have already gained some experience in building and utilizing robots.

The most expensive robot kit is the Owi WAO Kranius Robot Kit. Priced at 9.99, this particular robot kit can be played by children who are at least 10 years old.

Unlike the other robot kits, this is a programmable robot. This robot can be easily programmed to do some particular tasks without the aid of a computer. its logical brain entails a keyboard with 33-tactile buttons and a micro-controller that has an 8-bit capacity.

The Owi WAO Kranius Robot Kit is highly recommended for people who are more inclined to improving their awareness and understanding of robot programming.

3. Advanced Robot Kits

Advance robot kits employ more complicated designs and structures and require more knowledge in robotics. most advanced robot kits are humanoid robots, meaning they almost resemble the human structure. most advance robot kits have two-legged and two-handed structures already.

And because they are already considered as humanoids, these robot kits can actually run, walk, rotate, and can perform simple task like what humans can do. however, their main control is through a personal computer or an ATMEL ATmega128.

The Megarobotics MGR-K2017 Humanoid Robot Kit is the most expensive robot kit under this category. Priced at ,299.99, this robot kit can offer more than your usual domestic robot.

4. Solar & Beam robot Kits

If you want to have some fun and enjoy playing with robots while enjoying the sun, try the solar and beam robot kits. they mainly feed on the sun’s rays. Solar energy gives them the power to continuously operate.

Availing of Secure Residential and Commercial Public Self Storage Rental Services and Facilities in Pembroke Pines, Hollywood and Miramar, FL

Why are more and more people availing of secure residential and commercial public self storage services and facilities that continue to thrive in Pembroke Pines, Hollywood and Miramar, FL and in all other areas of the United States? why is there such a huge demand for these services and facilities? The demand is, of course, a mere reflection of the people’s need. There is indeed a growing need for secure residential and commercial public self storage services and facilities.

Almost all families in the United States today feel the need for additional home storage space. Things seem to accumulate so fast in the home as each day passes and there is nowhere to put all these belongings. Sociologists analyze this trend as a result of the consumerism that has pervaded modern societies especially in more affluent countries. People tend to purchase more and more goods for themselves and other family members, including children and even babies. As soon as a child learns the concept of money and receives some, the same behavior is adapted. soon, the entire family has more things than can be accommodated in the existing storage spaces at home.

Even companies today experience the lack of adequate commercial storage space. Although many businesses have to downsize because of financial problems, they are still compelled to maintain the right level of product inventories in order to meet the demands of their market and keep the profitability of the company. As they cut costs by moving to more affordable commercial spaces they often find that they have to bring their inventories elsewhere for storage.

As they seek more feasible and affordable storage solutions, many individuals, families and companies find what they need with secure residential and commercial public self storage services and facilities.

Also because of the current economic climate, many individuals, families and companies can be found moving to distant locations, seeking better opportunities. Many residential and commercial public self storage services and facilities have recognized this trend and have responded by offering storage and moving services. They have moving u-haul trucks rentals and even offer moving supplies and boxes for sale, with or without storage services.

The storage containers offered by residential and commercial public self storage services and facilities for storage rental in their storage buildings come in various sizes and dimensions. Those who need locker type storage for smaller items can avail of mini storage units. There are also larger storage units, some as large as a garage, with ample storage space for motorcycle storage or even RV storage.

Of course, anyone who stores goods in residential and commercial public self storage services and facilities would demand the highest security measures to guarantee the safety of their possessions. Public self storage units acknowledge this demand and allow only the renters and their authorized representatives to have access to their units. once a unit has been rented, not even the facility’s management can open it without proper authorization. Professional security personnel are on guard duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week, without let up. aside from this, the  self storage units have computer controlled electronic gates with high tech biometric locks armed with alarms. They are also watched round the clock by surveillance cameras.

Some news about break ins that occurred in certain unsecured residential and commercial public self storage services and facilities in Oklahoma shows just how important proper security measures are. The Tulsa Police Department Burglary Unit reported that the break ins happened in 10 Tulsa public self storage facilities that did not have surveillance cameras.

People will always avail of secure residential and commercial public self storage services and facilities in Pembroke Pines, Hollywood and Miramar, FL and all other areas of the United States provided that these residential and commercial public self storage services and facilities keep up their end of the bargain in providing excellent customer care and security.

Chain Reaction Cycles – behind the scenes

March 13th, 2011

Chain Reaction Cycles proudly proclaim that they’re “the world’s largest online bike store” but it’s not until you arrive at their headquarters in Doagh, a quiet village just outside Belfast in Northern Ireland, that the full scale of the operation hits you.

The first thing you see is a massive industrial unit, entered via a gleaming showroom where the latest bikes, components and clothing are on display (and available to buy). Can’t see what you want? Log on to chainreactioncycles.com using the in-store computer terminal and staff will fetch you whatever you want from the huge warehouse out back.

Chain reaction cycles are based on an industrial estate in the small village of ballyclare, near belfast: chain reaction cycles are based on an industrial estate in the small village of ballyclare, near belfast

The rural village of Doagh is an incongruous location for Chain Reaction’s massive warehouse

Combined with another unit across the road, which is where new products arrive and the website team and photo studio are based, the Doagh site covers some 150,000sq ft. on top of that, CRC have another 65,000sq ft unit two miles down the road where all the new bikes are stored. not bad for a family owned business that began life as a tiny shop in nearby Ballynure 25 years ago!

Products arrive at the goods-in unit over the road from the showroom and are then stored in Chain Reaction’s main 100,000sq ft warehouse. this place is vast, with dozens of aisles and stock stacked several storeys high. It takes a small army to fill the tens of thousands of orders being received daily – in total, CRC have around 420 staff.

The crc warehouse is vast – and this is just parts and clothing. bikes are kept in a separate storage facility a couple of miles down the road: the crc warehouse is vast – and this is just parts and clothing. bikes are kept in a separate storage facility a couple of miles down the road

Customer orders are relayed to pickers wearing radio headsets and the goods are then put into plastic crates and sent to the packing room. here they’re sorted by size – large objects like rims or tyres are packed by hand, while the other 75 percent of products are put into one of two queues to be boxed.

Ever wondered why even small items ordered from Chain Reaction tend to arrive in a cardboard box? CRC say their automated system is so efficient that it’s quicker to pack items in a cardboard box than an alternative like a jiffy bag, it doesn’t cost any more, is more environmentally friendly, the contents are better protected and the uniform shape of the boxes makes them easier to fit in the back of vans.

Goods are then transferred from the crates into open cardboard boxes: goods are then transferred from the crates into open cardboard boxes

This machine calculates the size of each order and then folds the cardboard box to fit

The company only have two sizes of cardboard box. Orders are put into one or the other, depending on size, and the lid is left open. The box then enters an amazing machine which works out the size of the order and custom scores and folds the box to fit. A postage label is then affixed and the package is ready to be dispatched.

During our whistlestop tour of Chain Reaction, which coincided with the relaunch of the Vitus bike brand, we were also shown the sales and customer service centre, where staff were answering calls in nine languages – yes, you can actually call CRC and speak to a human being. We were taken around the workshop, where wheels are built and parts are serviced, and also had a quick visit to the design room, where early drawings of the 2012 Vitus range were on display – look out for more on these bikes soon on BikeRadar. See our image gallery for loads more pictures.

Time to dig out your family’s favorite holiday cookie recipes

December 30th, 2010

The first week of December is the perfect time to pull out those cookie recipes you have not made for a year. these next weeks are filled with school, office and neighborhood parties. the cookies will keep in airtight containers in a cool place. Be sure to store each recipe separately as soft cookies will make crisp cookies soft. made ahead, they will be ready to put onto trays or into gift boxes for sharing.

I enjoyed reading Diana Abu-Jaber’s essay “Sugar Fiend” in the December issue of Good Housekeeping magazine.

She tells how her grandmother delighted in sharing both the gift of labor and sweetness to bind children to her. I remember my own grandmother always had something sweet in her home. and our mother’s cookie jar, a wedding gift, was always full. Early on, my sister and I learned to make cookies. We still enjoy doing that, though I confess I rarely do more than a simple bar variety these days. We delighted in sharing cookies with friends, cousins and neighbors.

This time of year, many of us are getting out recipes and shopping for the ingredients we don’t usually stock in our pantry. if you don’t have favorites, just look at all the cookie recipes in current magazines on the newsstand. Or go on the Internet; my favorite site is northpole.com, where you will find more than 300 cookie recipes. I’ve found new ones and still have many favorites from years past. though we all love the standard sugar cookie cut into pretty shapes and decorated with sprinkles and frosting, others take a lot less time and also will be appreciated. when I found the world’s best cookie on the North Pole website, I realized it was one I had made for years. my original instructions, typed on my mother’s recipe card, simply said to mix, roll in balls, flatten and bake. Children love to help make these. Have a family cookie-baking session this weekend. Baking on parchment paper makes the process so easy.

WORLD’S BEST COOKIES

1 cup butter or margarine

1 cup granulated sugar

1 cup crushed corn flakes

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 cup shredded coconut

1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

1/2 cup miniature chocolate pieces (optional)

In large bowl, use an electric mixer to cream butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and then add oil and vanilla, and mix together. Add rolled oats and cornflakes. Mix, then add flour, baking soda and salt until well-blended. Fold in the coconut, nuts and chocolate chips. Form dough into 1-inch balls. place on ungreased or parchment-lined cookie sheet. Flatten with a fork that has been dipped in water. Bake at 325 degrees for 12 minutes or until golden in color.
