Gillis getting helped by Pain

December 1st, 2011

If Mitch Gillis survives the little tournament known as Six Days In Hell next week, he can thank the skeleton.

No, not the boney frame inside his body, but the Olympic event for lunatics who fly down the bobsleigh track head first on a tiny sled.

It was a chance meeting between Gillis and three-time Olympian and silver medalist Jeff Pain that played a huge part in turning around the golfer’s season.

“I was playing the Canadian Tour event in Calgary and I put in for private housing, which is something I never do,” Gillis reflected. “I ended up staying at Jeff’s house.”

Since then, Pain has provided counseling for Gillis on everything from how to prepare for an event to what to eat to goal-setting. and it’s worked exceptionally well. Gillis made it through the first two stages of the PGA Tour’s Qualifying Tournament, the official name of the event, and will play the final stage beginning next Wednesday. The top 25 finishers earn status on the PGA Tour for 2012 while the remaining golfers get varying levels of status on the Nationwide Tour.

It’s the first time the product of Williams Lake, B.C., a town of just over 10,000 that sits 540 kilometres north of Vancouver, has advanced to the final stage. He’s one of nine Canadians who will take part in the hunt for PGA Tour cards.

Remarkably, his progress comes after what he termed as a terrible campaign on the Canadian Tour.

“It was just a horrible year,” he said. “I actually took the entire month of August off, put the clubs away for a while and had to think about what I wanted to do.

“I was either going to try to keep playing the Canadian Tour and try to keep my status or shut it down and prepare for U.S. tour school.”

He chose the latter and spent a long stretch with his coach, T.R. Marritt, another Williams Lake product who is the director of instruction at La Costa.

Gradually, Gillis’s game came around to where his ball-striking was back on track and then one final piece of the puzzle fell into place.

“I was watching the PGA Tour playoffs,” Gillis said, “and there was a stat that 20 per cent of the players were using a belly putter. I’d putted really badly that day so I went right out and bought a belly putter. It was great – I’ve been making bombs ever since.”

Gillis has sent congratulation notes to some of the Group of Nine but for the most part, will remain on his own when he gets to La Quinta, Calif., and the PGA West complex where the Q-School will go. It’s part of his plan, he said, to stay focused on this ultimate goal.

“A lot of people have been passing on congrats and saying that at worst, I’m going to be on the Nationwide Tour,” said Gillis. “But I don’t want that, I’m going in with the goal of winning this thing. I think that’s what you have to do.”

If he does that, he’ll follow in the footsteps of another Canadian who has had a pretty good career. Mike Weir won Q-School in 1998 and Gillis would love to become the second Canadian to reach that goal.

And it’s a heck of a lot easier than the skeleton.

Wedding Cards – Thank You – Etiquette

April 12th, 2010

The obligatory and often overwhelming task of sending wedding thank-yous may seem like a chore, but there’s no better way to express your sincere thanks to guests than with a lovely, handwritten note. If you’ve got a massive stack of thank-you notes you need to tackle, take heart! From etiquette tips to what to say, here is everything you need to know to make the task a little easier and perhaps even enjoyable.

· Always send handwritten notes. Regardless how brief, a handwritten note (as opposed to a preprinted one) illustrates sincerity and your appreciation for the gift.

· Personalize each note. Don’t send the same, generic message to each guest; it sends the message that you were tired of writing notes and too lazy to personally acknowledge them. Take the time to pen something individual and thank them for their specific gift by name. You may even want to mention how you plan to use it.

· Don’t procrastinate! Formal etiquette dictates that thank-yous for shower gifts should be sent within ten days and those for wedding gifts should be sent within two weeks after returning from the honeymoon. Moreover, gifts received prior to the wedding should be acknowledged immediately. That being said, if you happen to fall behind, rest assured it is never too late to be gracious!

· Document each gift. Chances are you’ll be writing so many thank you notes throughout your engagement and post-wedding that it will be impossible to keep it all straight in your head. So to stay organized, keep separate guest lists for each wedding event (e.g. bridal shower, engagement party, wedding) and document what each guest gives you at the time you receive it.

· Know the anatomy of a thank you note. Generally, you should greet the guest, express your gratitude, mention the specific gift, and thank them for attending the wedding (or for thinking of you if they couldn’t).

· Write as you would speak. Avoid using language and terms that don’t sound like you – your guests will appreciate it more!

· Address each note properly. When sending the notes, you should address each one to the individual(s) who signed the gift card. The greeting inside can address them by first name if you have a close relationship with them; otherwise, simply use “Mr.” and/or “Mrs.”

· Plan ahead! Whether online or from your designer, order your wedding cards thank you in advance so you are prepared as the gifts come in. You may want to order them at the same time you order your invitations.
