Brake making funny sounds… – E46Fanatics – forum.e46fanatics.com

August 19th, 2010

Search brake pad bedding and try that…but first, please make sure some of the fundamental things are okay…check that bolts on carrier are as tight as they need to be…that the clips went on the right brakes (I think mine might’ve gotten reversed), that your guide pins and holes are cleaned and lubed (despite what Bentley says, everyone lubes them…I used brake grease…heard of some using anti-seize (doesn’t seem right to me somehow!).

If everything is tight, suspect it’s not much more than your needing to bed properly. I had a squeak for about 2 months…was my pads hitting the lip on rotor…would only hear it under 1 mph!

Also, warped rotor is mostly a myth, though having it not sit squarely is possible if you didn’t clean hub or inside wheel real well…and if you did it yourself, then torque on lugs is probably fine, but otherwise doublecheck that.

Pads sit just 5/1000 inch off rotor, so the other possibility is that one is slightly rubbing coz maybe the piston didn’t fully retract enough…it’s heating up on one side of rotor a tad and the sound you’re hearing is the difference in braking on one side and the other setting up that harmonic you hear.

Or, perhaps you’ve just got this film on rotor unevenly deposited and you’re picking up a harmonic coz of that. You’re basically doing the same thing with the rotor as you do when you wet your finger and rub it around a crystal glass to get it to hum…

Search brake bedding (be careful, follow instructions)…also search warped rotors…great article someone posted recently about the myth of warped rotors…interesting read if you have no life and/or like life!

1999 FRC Chevrolet Corvette – Third Time's A Charm

April 24th, 2010

His story starts with a ’76 T-top Vette, which had a 383 GM crate motor and a Richmond four-speed. Unfortunately, one of Mike’s employees decided he could have more fun with the car than Mike and ended up stealing it in the middle of the night and totaling it after a smoke-filled burnout and donut show. Never one for giving up, Mike bought the totaled mess back from his insurance company and decided to transplant his motor and transmission into a ’73 Corvette, which he had custom painted and completely restored before getting on the road. Unfortunately, the ’73 ended up having a similar fate as the ’76, this time by Mike’s own hand, totaling it in a bizarre school bus related incident. With two Corvettes down, it was time to change the game plan and get serious. “After a brief time and a trip to Moroso Speedway in Florida, where I completed a Justin Bell competition driving course, I was ready to buy another Corvette. I promised to keep it stock.”
