Local nonprofit helps locally and abroad

November 8th, 2011

PANAMA CITY — Hope was the word of the day for Sponsors of Hope and the St. Andrew Christian Care Center.

Twin sisters Sally and Silvie Britton started Sponsors of Hope, a nonprofit agency, about seven years ago to support individuals and agencies that work to benefit needy children and the elderly, continuing the family tradition of helping others.

“Our parents were missionaries. we were born and raised helping people and we decided to make it a little more formal. we created the nonprofit to give other people the opportunity to help through us,” Sally Britton said.

That dedication to helping others can be seen in other family members as well. Sally and Sylvie are frequently joined by their sister Heaven, and when their brother David has time off from his duties with the Army, he volunteers as well.

They have applied that passion for helping others locally and abroad. Sponsors of Hope sent supplies and aid to an orphanage in Honduras, helped people feed needy children in Costa Rica and aided other organizations in more than a dozen countries around the world.

Locally, the hope has been spread to about 16 organizations in Bay County, including the St. Andrew Christian Care Center, where they made another delivery Thursday.

Sponsors of Hope volunteer Paul Eggerman has volunteered for the last three years and said the chance to help people through the organization was an easy decision to make.

Anita Healey, another volunteer, joined the group about five months ago after finishing missionary work in Nepal.

“It’s nice to work with people who are really working to help people and doing practical things to meet people’s needs.”

The St. Andrew Christian Care Center offers support in many areas including counseling, food and clothing through faith-based programs; the counseling is not required to receive help, but is accessible to everyone.

The clothing program at the center has men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, but also offers blankets and toiletries when they are available. Thursday’s donation was geared toward making that happen more often; dozens of boxes of toiletry items were delivered to the Care Center’s clothing store.

When someone comes into the Care Center, they register information such as the number of people in their family and how many of those are children. they fill out a food request and take it into the food pantry on their way to the clothing store, “shopping” once a month. they can have six items of hanging clothing per person each shopping trip in addition to shoes and other household items.

Care Center volunteer Jan Whittle said they always need items like coats, blankets and clothing for children under the age of 3. she said she volunteers because helping people get a new start can begin a cycle of people helping others. she told a story of visiting a yard sale where she noticed a box of jeans. she asked the women having the sale what she was going to do with the jeans that didn’t sell and the woman said probably donate them.

When she heard Whittle was from the Care Center, she told her to take all of the jeans because when she was going through a difficult time, the Care Center helped her get back on her feet and she could never fully pay them back for the help.

“Some of these people we never see again and never know what happened to them. when you can help people in this economy and give them a start, when you can end the day by hugging their neck and praying for them, it’s all worthwhile,” she said.

To help Sponsors of Hope, find them on Facebook or email at ; for the St. Andrew Christian Care Center, call 850-785-8596 or donations can be dropped off at the church on 15th Street.

WASHINGTON, may 25, 2011 — Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today applauded the Office of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative and the launch of Let’s Move! in Indian Country (LMIC). LMIC is an effort designed to support and advance the work that tribal leaders and community members are already doing to improve the health of American Indian and Alaska Native children. as a part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative, LMIC brings together federal agencies, communities, nonprofits, corporate partners, and tribes to end the epidemic of childhood obesity in Indian Country within a generation by everyone playing a role. the launch was held at the Menominee Nation in Keshena, Wisconsin.

“This is a special day for the Tribes and for USDA. Let’s Move! in Indian Country, will help promote healthy eating and physical activity among Native Americans and is an important part of the effort to reduce teen and childhood obesity rates,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. “USDA is committed to working with native communities to create a healthy start for children, and providing the nutrition assistance that will lead to healthy lives.”

the Let’s Move! in Indian Country initiative seeks to support and advance the work that Tribal leaders and community members are already doing to improve the health of Native American children. as a part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative, LMIC brings together federal agencies, communities, nonprofits, corporate partners, and tribes to mitigate childhood obesity in Indian Country within a generation.

USDA continues to work with tribal governments to expand their access to the full range of USDA programs by supporting and establishing local and regional food systems. USDA is helping build strong and resilient American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian farming and ranching enterprises that will create jobs and strong economies in Native communities across the country. Additionally, the department is collaborating to increase the number of food policy councils in Indian Country to improve food production opportunities and the availability of locally grown foods.

“We are committed to working with Tribal nations to improving access to healthy, affordable foods on Indian Reservations and tribal lands,” said Janie Hipp, Director of USDA’s Office of Tribal Relations, “Let’s Move! in Indian Country will help support and expand efforts on the ground that will make great strides in improving the nutrition and health of tribal members.”

USDA has a long history of supporting the goals of LMIC by working with Tribal nations through a variety of rural development and nutrition assistance programs including the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR), the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), and the Supplemental Nutrition assistance Program (SNAP). LMIC will build on the success of these widely used programs and focus on expanding participation in other federal nutrition programs including the School Breakfast Program, the Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Program which provides healthy snacks to school children, the Child and Adult Care Food Program which can now reimburse schools and afterschool programs providing an evening meal, and the Summer Food Service Program which feeds children and teens when school is out. Additionally, our Rural Development Programs have financed numerous projects in Indian Country, ranging from teacher housing to small businesses such as restaurants and grocery stores.

the goals of LMIC are complemented by USDA’s efforts including:

Creating a healthy FDPIR food package

  • To improve the FDPIR food package, USDA has taken a number of actions to increase the nutritional quality of FDPIR food offerings, including a 1995 partnership with the Department of Defense to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables for the distribution on almost 100 reservations. this past year alone, USDA worked with DOD to expand the number of fresh fruit and vegetable offerings in the food package from 23 to 35. New items offered include avocados, seedless grapes, cherries, kiwi, honey dew melon, nectarines, and plums. the FDPIR Food Package serves over, 70,000 people each month in Indian Country.
  • A recent nutritional analysis concluded that individuals consuming FDPIR foods would achieve a Healthy Eating Index score of 81 out of 100, well above the average American diet. (58 out of 100). this underscores the program’s success in providing a benefit to FDPIR clients that is not only cost-effective but nutritionally effective.

Grants to develop creative, self-initiated nutrition projects

  • In April, USDA announced that 15 Indian Tribal Organizations were selected to receive approximately $1 million in grants this year. the grants will help develop creative, self-initiated projects designed to enhance the nutrition knowledge and to foster positive lifestyle changes of low-income households living on Indian reservations and to American Indian households residing in approved areas near reservations or in Oklahoma.
  • Projects chosen this year for the grants include a recipe toolkit containing menus, shopping lists, and snack ideas featuring more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; summer camp programs for youth to teach healthy cooking techniques; nutrition education sessions held during scheduled food deliveries for participants in remote reservation areas; and community gardens to promote fruit and vegetable consumption. among the recipients is the Menominee Indian Tribe of Keshena, Wisc., where the launch of LMIC is being held. the Menominee Indian Tribe will use their grant to offer cooking and canning classes to FDPIR eligible participants and assist 30 families in developing home vegetable gardens.

Passage of Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act

  • the passage of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act signed by President Obama in December 2010 allows USDA, for the first time in over 30 years, the chance to make real reforms to the school lunch and breakfast programs by improving the critical nutrition and hunger safety net for millions of children. this will help native communities win the future by having healthier lives. the bill also expanded the afterschool supper program to youth in low-income areas in all 50 states, including reservations. it will improve the food environment at schools participating in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs, including tribal schools, by providing USDA with the authority to set nutritional standards for all foods sold in schools, including in vending machines, the “a la carte” lunch lines, and school stores. it also enhances universal meal access for eligible children in high poverty communities by eliminating paper applications and using census data to determine school wide income eligibility.

Let’s Move! is a comprehensive initiative, launched by the First Lady, dedicated to solving the problem of obesity within a generation, so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams. Combining comprehensive strategies with common sense, Let’s Move! and USDA are working to put native families on the path to a healthy future.

FDPIR and the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs are among 15 nutrition assistance programs overseen by USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service. many households participate in the FDPIR as an alternative to the Special Nutrition assistance Program, formerly known as Food Stamps, because they do not have easy access to SNAP offices or authorized food stores. These programs touch the lives of one in four Americans each year and work together to form a national safety net against hunger. Visit fns.usda.gov for information about FNS and nutrition assistance programs.

The Bowdoin Orient

April 7th, 2011

Eight student groups spread out across the North American continent during the first week of Spring Break as part of this year’s community service Alternative Spring Break (ASB) trips, sponsored by the McKeen Center for the Common good. 81 students participated this year and their feedback on the 2011 ASB program has been overwhelmingly positive.

The scope of the programs was widely varied: student leaders took groups of their peers to Mississippi and West Virginia to work on affordable housing projects and learn about poverty in rural America; to Atlanta, Ga. to work in one of the largest refugee communities in the country; to Immokalee, Fla. to learn about the hardships of migrant workers; to an Oglala Sioux reservation in South Dakota to learn about the unique issues facing Native American communities; to Camden, N.J. to help out at the Urban Promise School; and to Guatemala to work on education initiatives for poor children in Guatemala City.

The ASB trips were a mix of past and new trips this year, according to Interim Director of the McKeen Center Sarah Seames. The groups collaborated with various local organizations, including several faith-based charity and community service groups, on various projects.

Macy Galvan ’13 was a student leader on the trip to the migrant worker community in Florida. She described the variety of different projects the group undertook, including working with adult literacy and childcare programs, as well as with the local soup kitchen. The group also spent time with a political group working to advance the rights of migrant laborers.

Ivan Zhang ’11 and Samantha Collins ’11 led the first ASB trip to Atlanta and worked with refugees from places such as Iran, Cuba, Afghanistan and Iraq. The group worked with Jewish Family Career Services and Lutheran Services of Georgia, helping the Lutheran Services with clean up and a yard sale at a local church. according to Zhang, the trip included “home visits with some recent refugee families.”

“We also had the opportunity to tutor with a school for refugee children called the Global Village School,” he added.

“It was really great,” said Collins. “We had a lot of good feedback from out participants and they are thinking about doing it again next year.”

Grace Hyndman ’11 and Elsie Thomson ’11 led students to a former coal mining town in Appalachian West Virginia. The McKeen Center sponsored a similar trip several years ago, but Hyndman and Thomson reintroduced it this year. The group worked with Southern Appalachian Labor School (SALS) on an after-school community gardening program to set up the plots for the coming season, according to Thomson.

“We worked with a group called the Master Gardeners,” said Hyndman. “They were able to give us a better insight into how gardens contribute to the community.”

Morgan Taggart-Hampton ’11 co-led the “Lives and Laws of the Oglala Sioux” ASB trip to South Dakota, where students worked with residents of the Pine Tree Indian Reservation. The group mainly worked with legal service groups in the area, including Dakota Plains Legal Services which, according to Taggart-Hampton, “handles a range of cases of low-income residents of Pine Ridge from child custody and domestic violence to disputes over tribal land.”

The Dakota Plains Legal Services “has one managing attorney, a paralegal and a secretary,” she added.

“We learned a lot from our volunteer organizations, our varied home-stay families, and the cultural events that we were allowed to attend,” said Taggart-Hampton.

The McKeen Center has been sponsoring service-oriented Spring Break trips since 2002, and began calling the program Alternative Spring Break in 2004. The trips, designed and coordinated by student leaders with help from McKeen Center staff, provide participants with “an intensive public service experience while increasing their understanding of significant social and environmental problems,” according to the McKeen Center website.

However, the ASB program is not merely a week-long experience; students apply to lead trips in the spring of the preceding year. Applicants propose the plan of the trip they want to lead?these are frequently reiterations of previous ASB programs, but can also be new trips. once the trips are approved, student leaders receive leadership training from the McKeen Center.

ASB Coordinator Colin Joyner conducted weekly seminars with the leaders throughout the fall to “get them ready to run a service trip, and to run a group of students.” The goal of the workshops, said Joyner, is to teach the leaders “how to run a community service trip and what community service is all about.”

In November, students were invited to apply for the ASB trips. once selected, the students had weekly meetings with their respective leaders to prepare for the trips in March.

“For people who haven’t been a part of ASB, they think that it’s just a one- week thing,” said Seames. “It’s really a full semester of focus on an issue.”

“I talked to a student the other day who said that her experience was life changing and she has already decided she wants to go into service after graduating from Bowdoin,” added Seames. “It isn’t life-changing for every person, but I think that it’s an important experience for everyone.”

Why Are Seasonal Rubber Stamps Great Buys?

March 2nd, 2011

A rubber stamp is something that you can use every single day depending on where you use it. For example, a stamp with your signature is very handy around the office. You’ll even use it multiple times throughout the day. this is the reason why they are very good investments. first of all, they’re very inexpensive that you can easily order one without worrying about the price. second of all, you’ll get to use it a lot of times. so you’re investing in something that’s inexpensive and very useful. That’s a very good deal.

But what about stamps that you can only use for a few times each year? These are the seasonal rubber stamps. These stamps are only used when they are “in season”. so compared to the ones that you get to use every single day, they don’t seem like a good investment at all. But if you’ll really look into the possibilities, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Let’s take rubber stamps with Christmas designs for example. Yes, you can only use it during the Christmas season. Let’s say that you’re sending out 100 cards to families and friends and you have a stamp with a Christmas tree on it to design the cards. so if you’re going to look at it, you only got to use it 100 times for the whole year. But look at the bigger picture. you have to realize that you specifically bought it to help you out during the Christmas season. it did its job effectively and efficiently. What more can you ask for?

Since you didn’t really spend a lot of money for it in the first place, it’s still a very good investment. besides, you can use the seasonal stamps year after year. Going back to the Christmas ones, you can use it every Christmas season. as long as you buy them from a good manufacturer, it’s going to last a long time.

There are other examples of rubber stamps that are seasonal with most of them designed for holidays and celebrations like Halloween, Valentine’s Day and the likes. so if you have rubber stamps for every major season, you basically have the whole year covered. Buying them is a good idea and can actually save you some money in the long run. Instead of buying fancy cards, a simple card personalized with the rubber stamps is better. They’re inexpensive and more thoughtful.

There’s also a good chance that you’ll find uses for them even if they’re not in season. For example, you can use them for arts and crafts. But the most important thing about seasonal rubber stamps is they do a great job and they’ll do it year after year.

Roxbury food pantry needs donations for Easter, now! – Recorder Community Newspapers: News

February 28th, 2011

ROXBURY TWP.– Thanksgiving and Christmas might be over, but Social ServicesDirector Janet Wald wants to remind residents- and potentialdonors- that Easter is right around the corner.

And, Wald said last week, she has more than 200families counting on her for Easter baskets and dinners.

“For some reason, donations have been very slowrecently,” she said, adding that she stats to get a bit nervous asanother holiday approaches, and all of her clients aren’t providedfor.

“I wanted to remind people that Easter iscoming right up. This year, I am doing Easter baskets and meals. That means I need fresh hams, frozen lasagnas, gift cards forWal-Mart and ShopRite and chocolate bunnies and marshmallow peeps,”she said.

“Things have just been very slow lately, and Iwant to have all of the meals and baskets ready to hand out byApril 18,” she said.

Easter is on Sunday, April 24, this year.

“This is a little too slow, and it’s a bit odd.I guess it’s because of the way the world is now. right now, I haveno ShopRite cards, or Wal-Mart cards, and that’s unusual,” shesaid.

And, a bit alarming.

“Things are very tight right now, and I reallywanted to get the word out there that if you can donate, now is thetime I really need it,” she said.

“Gift cards are one of the best things that canbe donated, but I also need fresh hams and frozen lasagna dinners,”Wald said.

“I also have several clients who live in hotelrooms, and don’t have the ability to prepare a meal, so gift cardsfor Boston Market are also wonderful,” she said.

Although she said she has fewer clients thanlast year, the need is still great.

“Last year, I think I had over 300 signed upfor Easter. This year, it’s down a bit, to about 250. but that’sbecause the number is dwindling a bit because a lot of people havemoved out of New Jersey,” she said.

“I have a few homeless guys who live out oftheir vehicles, and these gift cards, especially for Boston Market, are perfect for them as well,” she said.

“Gift cards really come in handy. I like tohave things in order, so I’m not scrambling at the last minute,”she said.

Wald said the township’s schools do a wonderfuljob, and said she can always count on student and local Scoutgroups bringing in jelly beans and chocolate bunnies to fill Easterbaskets.

At the food pantry, located at 72 Eyland Ave.,Succasunna, she said supplies, at least right now, aresufficient.

“But, if it keeps going the way it has been,I’ll be very low there soon too,” she said.

“We need donations of all kinds as this time. That’s what I would say, and that includes toiletries and otheritems like that. my clients aren’t allowed to use their food stampsfor things like deodorant and toothpaste. They rely on me forthings like that,” she said.

The Roxbury Social Services Department, locatedat 72 Eyland Ave., Succasunna, is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. onMondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.Drop-offs of donations can be madeat that time. in addition, gift cards and/or monetary donations canbe mailed to: Roxbury Social Services/Food Pantry, 72 Eyland Ave.,Succasunna, N.J. 07876. for more information, Wald can be reachedvia telephone on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at (973)448-2026.

Mitziton: public letter to the bad government in Chiapas

September 15th, 2010

Photo: California border by Brenda Norrell.

Updated Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010

The 72 people murdered at a ranch in Tamaulipas State, about 100 miles south of Brownsville, Texas, were migrants. Thirty-one of those murdered were identified on Friday, Aug. 27. They were 14 Hondurans, 12 Salvadorans, four Guatemalans and one Brazilian.

On Sunday, bomb attacks hit Tamaulipas, as police were investigating the mass murder of the migrants. Four devices exploded in just 24 hours, injuring at least 17 people. The  lead investigator in the mass murder case, and one police officer, have been missing since Wednesday. Bombs also exploded outside a television station and police station in Tamaulipas during the investigation.

Mexican police suspect the Zetas of the mass murder of the 72 migrants. The Zetas were trained by the United States as special forces, according to School of Americas Watch.

“Many of the Zeta leaders have been identified by Mexican officials as former members of an elite paratroop and intelligence battalion known as the Special Air Mobile Force Group, formerly assigned to the state of Tamaulipas, which borders southern Texas, to fight drug traffickers,” according to SOA Watch.

The Mexican government confirmed that several of the Zetas were trained at the School of the Americas in Fort Benning, Ga., now known as the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation.

A core of 31 US trained former battalion members are thought to lead the Zetas. Several members deserted the Special Air Mobile Force Group in 1991, aligning themselves with drug traffickers and establishing their own smuggling routes into the United States, according to SOA Watch.

The 72 murdered migrants were mourned throughout the Americas this week. The lone survivor in the attack of mingrants, from Ecuador, was shot in the neck, pretended to be dead, then escaped and reached military forces who stormed the ranch.

Most migrants are Indigenous Peoples from Central and South America. They have nothing and are walking north through Mexico trying to survive. They are often kidnapped and help for ransom. Those who have no way of paying the kidnappers are shot, one by one, or tortured in front of the others. They are asked to give a phone number of a person in the US that can pay the ransom, if they have no one, they are killed. This is revealed in the new documentary “The Invisibles,” which just premiered in Tucson.

I Have Become Accustomed To Rejection / We All Want Different Endings

July 20th, 2010

Things have happened since we last spoke, few of them interesting. J visited for four days and it was great with only one difficult discussion where nothing was resolved. Awesome. We went shopping in Champaign and I couldn’t find my wallet so I called him Big Daddy for the day and he liked it, I’m pretty sure. I got curtains and groceries and a toaster and a plastic thing to put beneath the dish rack and a lot of beer was purchased. I am not a beer connoisseur or drinker much, but I did want those curtains hung and I know a real man needs beer to do manly things. I just made that up.

I saw a Shake Weight in person and I shook it but it didn’t magically sculpt my arms. In fact, it did not do much of anything at all.

I want one of these very badly. I have a silver one but it wants a pink friend to hold hands with. Everyone wants someone to hold hands with.

We did the grocery shopping at a store called Meier’s that seems to be like Wal-mart only not horrible. Even J had to agree that food is super cheap here. Produce felt basically free. We were pretty giddy just throwing fresh, not rotten produce into the cart. If you lived here, fresh food all the time! I also was able to breathe a sigh of relief. I had struggled to find Diet Cherry Pepsi in my rural hamlet, and I was, honestly, starting to panic because without DCP, I would have no ability to cope. In Meier’s I found my happy place.

It’s also kind of neat that there was a selection of temporary tramp stamps for sale right there. I told J we could apply one to his back and maybe find him a pole. He declined. Sad. Also, do you see how the box says Discover Cherry Goodness?

I was confused by this sign. Do you know why?

Isn’t ice cream, by its nature, by the designation of “ice” frozen? Is there unfrozen ice cream? I spent an embarrassing amount of time parsing through this signage. I was told to “let it go.” I get that a lot.

I’m almost all unpacked thanks to my excellent helper. The curtains have been hung. I assisted by sitting on the bed, directing and fetching beers but I did not micromanage and I’m proud of that, even when he was using the end of the drill to pound a plastic screw holder thing into the wall and I thought, “That’s going to break,” and IT DID. I’m super supportive. I said, “That totes happened because you are so strong, baby. Here’s another plastic thing!” He said, “It’s an anchor.”

I thought, “AHA!”

I take pictures of everything, all the time. It drives J crazy. He often says, “Just be in the moment,” but that is me being in the moment. Also, I respect his hatred of cameras by not posting his picture all over. I respect boundaries. There was a fly, two flies really, and he was tasked with killing them. It took three days but he finally bested one of the flying beasts. And when we inspected the dead fly he said, “Take a picture!”

It rains a lot here. Today I was driving around and the End Of Times rain began. I frantically looked around for some animals to bring on the ark with me. I did not find any so I worried and then I nearly panicked when I saw a large wooden ship making its way down the main street.

Today I did administrative things like turning in payroll forms and getting my ID card and going to the library for a book I needed and going to the bank and post office. I also got access to my new email account. I felt resourceful and accomplished even though that’s the tip of the iceberg of Stuff I Need to Do This Week Or Else. At every university office, I was faced with incredulity when I said no, I’m not a student, no I’m not a staff member, yes I really, really am a new faculty member. The look on their faces made the years and years of schooling and graduate school stresses totes worth it. I mean is it that hard to believe?

I also checked out yet another gym and this one was scary. I don’t want to name names but its name was the number of hours in a day plus gym not to be confused with the number of hours in a day plus fitness. The outside was like a run down house. The inside was a small, unairconditioned room with large fans blowing stifling bacterial air back and forth. Every single one of my “issues” flared up. There was no one there and there were no lights on and there was a sad little sign in sheet and no employee. It was the kind of place where the probability of being raped was very very high. From now own I am going to call it Rape Gym or Murder By a Crazed Serial Killer Gym. Either feels possible. I took a picture but it really doesn’t evoke the skeevy vibe this place has.

I think most writers go through compulsive phases. For the past year I have been writing the same morbid story over and over again. I mostly don’t show anyone these stories though there are a few out there. As writers I think sometimes we want different endings and so we turn to our stories to rewrite the past, to re-right the past. Last night I was working on the latest story in this vein and I thought, “This is not sane.” I can write all I want and the history I’m exorcising will not change and at some point I’m going to have to find something healthier to write about.  I would like to get to that point soon.
