KUALA LUMPUR, 16 December 2010 -

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and the Brunei Darussalam Institute of Certified Public Accountants (BICPA) renewed a MoU, originally signed in 2008, to continue its cooperation in the development of technical skills and competency of accountants and finance professionals in Brunei.

The signing ceremony held in conjunction with ACCA Members’ Appreciation Nite 2010 was witnessed by Yang Mulia, Dato Paduka Awang Haji Mohd Daud Bin Hj Mahmud, Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) of Brunei Ministry of Education.

In his speech, Pengiran Haji Moksin bin Pengiran Haji Yusof, President, BICPA informed that the MoU was “a vehicle to bring in the relevant and necessary knowledge and expertise to Brunei Darussalam as all the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses would also be made available to the general public.”

According to Pengiran Haji Moksin, “As many as 492 participants had benefited from attending 25 CPD courses conducted over 360 hours” from the first MoU. He added that, “This spirit of cooperation reflects BICPA and ACCA desire to ensure members are given the support to update themselves with the necessary knowledge and global standards that would add value in their workplace.”

ACCA Head of Emerging Markets – Asia, Mr Reza Ali, concurs, “ACCA share BICPA’s commitment in building the capacity of accounting profession as both recognise the value of CPD and endeavour to provide essential and relevant opportunities for members of both BICPA and ACCA in Brunei to ensure that they maintain and develop the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in today”s dynamic and demanding business environment.”

In addition to working towards joint facilitation of CPD sessions to support accounting profession in Brunei, both organisations will also, “work together to identify suitable research opportunities and undertake joint research and publications with other potential partners,” continues Reza.

Reza also shared the key structural changes that have taken place within ACCA which includes the establishment of ACCA Emerging Markets – Asia unit. With the exception of six markets – Malaysia, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand – the remit of the unit is to provide support to ACCA stakeholders in every market in Asia, from Afghanistan to Fiji, including Brunei.

While the MoU was a means to “further strengthen ACCA’s ties with BICPA, the ACCA Members’ Appreciation Nite 2010 was to celebrate members’ involvement in ACCA and to share that as a global professional body, it does not matter where ACCA members are, their feedback matter.” concludes Reza.
