Belts And Performance

May 21st, 2011

The belts for vacuum cleaners can come in many styles and hundreds of different sizes. normally, vacuums use a belt to drive an agitation device, which is also known as a brush roller. with very few exceptions, most vacuums will use either a flat belt, round belt, or a geared style belt.

The type of belt that your vacuum uses is very important, not only for durability, but performance as well. the condition and type of belt your vacuum uses will have a lot of impact on the systems ability to clean carpet. the proper use of agitation is almost 70% of the cleaning ability of a vacuum cleaner.

Suction is also very important. the suction is what pulls the dirt that is removed from the carpet into the collection area of the vacuum. the suction, or airflow, is the key when cleaning hard surfaces or when using attachments. without suction, a vacuum cleaner could only bring more dirt to the surface of carpet. even though both agitation and suction are important with vacuuming, the agitation is what actually cleans them.

Almost all manufacturers use brush rollers that are made of wood, metal, or even plastic that is driven by a suction or brush motor through the use of three different kinds of belts – round, geared, or flat.

The round belts are the earliest type as they were easy to produce and easy to engineer. the round style, unfortunately, is normally run in the same space as vacuumed dirt. What this means, is that almost all of the dirt, staples, and hair you vacuum up will pass around the belt; cutting, nicking, or even scratching it along the way.

Vacuum cleaner belts have to stretch quite a long way, placing even more stress on the roller and the motor bearings. the round belt is still common, and used even today.

The flat style of belts are most often run in a circular fashion as well, unlike the twisted route the round belt takes to deliver the performance in the proper direction.

The style allow manufacturers to run the belt off of one side of the brush roller, instead of the center where all of the dirt is. This is truly a great innovation, as you can eliminate premature failure due to the soil and dirt in the belt path.

The latest belt design is considered to be the best in the industry. even though there are many variations out there, the geared belt is the most efficient means to drive a brush. the geared belt is also known as a positive brush system because the energy of the brush motor is transmitted directly to the brush.

Both the brush and the motor are locked by fixed teeth to each other through a cogged belt without tension. the resulting direct connection results in higher cleaning efficiency because the brush can be driven at a faster speed regardless of the age of the belt.

The flat style can stretch as they become warm, which will cause them to lose tension. when you use your vacuum, the belt is always going to stretch. believe it or not, it will lose it’s tension the moment you put it up to rest in the closet.

There is however, one real drawback to geared belts – the cost of the vacuum. Geared belts are normally used on two motor vacuums. Not only does this require a separate suction and brush motor, but it also requires electronic sensory systems to tell you when something is wrong with the brush.

A Cheap Vacuum Cleaner Bag and More

May 12th, 2011

Buying a cheap vacuum cleaner bag is one of the secrets of getting the best from your vacuum cleaner.

There are also many other part of your vacuum cleaner that need TLC.

A vacuum cleaner can easily be taken for granted. Is it this ?thing? that lurks in the cupboard to be pressed into service for a quick clean-up, then put away until the next time?

The trouble is that when the ?next time? comes your cleaner may groan and refuse to start. You will probably offer up a mental curse and wonder “What is wrong with this ? xyz? machine.”

First of all, run through the following check list to see what may be the cause of the trouble.

1. Is the bag full? or in the case of a bag-less cleaner, does the container need emptying? a replacement with a cheap vacuum cleaner bag may be the obvious solution. one mis-guided lady threw her vacuum cleaner away because ‘it was not working’. All it needed was the bag emptying or replacing.

A small tip here. if you have a cleaner that uses bags, stick a cheap air-freshener block to the inside of the vacuum door and it will send out a pleasant smell as you clean.

2. Is the brush roll at the base of the cleaner clogged with cottons, strands of hair and other unmentionables? this clogging will put extra strain on the belt. Remove carefully making sure that no cottons remain around the connection point of brush roll to cleaner body.

3. Remove the filter. Is it clogged with dirt? Does it need washing? this should be done on a regular basis i.e., every six months. a dirty filter will only send back dust into the room. if possible put a sticky label inside the machine with the date when the filter was last washed.

4. Is the suction pipe blocked with odd items that your cleaner has picked up ? matches, hair clips, pins. these items can obstruct the flow of ?normal? dirt, hair etc., and so cause a blockage. this must be removed before proceeding.

5. Don?t over-stretch the flex. be careful as you rewind it back after use. Also check the plug. Is a new fuse needed? one important point to remember ? while you are checking all the above items, particularly the last, make sure the vacuum cleaner is not plugged into the mains supply.

It is impossible to delve into the workings of each individual brand of cleaner. whilst a cheap vacuum cleaner bag may be all that is need here, reference to your service manual is your first port of call. Consideration for this much maligned piece of household equipment will give it many years of useful ife.

Window cleaning services focus on safely and effectively cleaning windows. They will have the necessary equipment and supplies to accomplish a quality job. Prior to hiring one, there are many facts to consider.

Many home cleaning businesses also provide window washing as an extra service. There are also those that focus totally in window cleaning. Either one is suitable as long as they’ve got the necessary experience. a professional window cleaner will ask a variety of questions or consider a visual assessment before pricing on the project. Calculating cost factors normally include the kind of windows, quantity, dimensions and amount of grime. Some types of windows will require specific cleaning, specifically filthy windows may necessitate power washing, which can increase the cost.

Choose a window cleaner who’s totally covered and bonded. There’s risk of damage if house windows are not washed appropriately, therefore ensure you are insured. Make sure you get an approximation in writing. This would include a comprehensive description of the job to be performed, the price for the job and time-frame for completion. Additionally, be sure they’ve got proper equipment to protect surrounding areas for damage and that they are accountable for thoroughly cleaning up just after the job is complete.

Ask family or friends for referrals. Obtain several estimates before deciding on a company. Make sure the provider will provide a free estimate. This is standard however it is wise to confirm prior to incurring any kind of unnecessary expenses. Request for referrals and follow up on them to make certain they have happy clients. a service which has been in business for a long period is a more sensible choice than a recently formed one because they can have an established track record.

Window washing could be a time consuming, tough task. Many people opt to hire a window cleaning service as opposed to doing the work themselves. with a good company, you will definately get a job that shows good quality work completed in a timely manner. The layout is good-looking, and there is a very good relationship between the text, tables and diagrams that sets an example to all listed companies with ambitions in this area.”

AWC speaker: Germs all around

October 19th, 2010

It may be safer to make a salad on your toilet seat than your kitchen cutting board.

That’s because there is 200 times more fecal bacteria found on your cutting board than on an actual toilet seat, says Chuck Gerba, professor of agriculture and health at the University of Arizona.

Gerba explains that this frightening statistic is due to the amount of raw meats and produce that most Americans bring into the kitchen.

Gerba, who jokingly calls himself “Dr. Germ,” recently spoke locally to an audience of Arizona Western College students and community members.

He told the audience that the goal of the presentation was to make the group more “germ aware” and emphasized that microorganisms around you adapt to your habits.

Gerba is a world-renowned germ specialist and has not only been a consultant to the World Health Organization and Centers for Disease Control, but he has also given valuable research information to the Department of Homeland Security, Department of Defense and many state and local agencies.

“He has appeared on numerous TV shows, including ‘Good Morning America,’ ‘Today Show,’ ‘20/20,’ ‘CNN News,’ ‘48 Hours,’ etc. His work has been quoted in Reader’s Digest, Prevention Magazine, Good Housekeeping, Women’s Health, etc.,” stated the news release about Gerba.

When looking at the amount of fecal bacteria in an average home, Gerba said, researchers have found that the place with the most fecal bacteria is the kitchen sponge.

“The sponge is a happy home for bacteria. It’s wet, it’s moist and it’s sucking up food all of the time,” he said, adding that you can squeeze as much as 10 million E. coli out of it without any issues.

Gerba explained that there is a smaller amount of fecal bacteria inside a home’s toilet bowl after a person flushes than there is in a kitchen sink.

“That’s why dogs drink out of the toilet. They’re a lot smarter than you think,” he joked.

He said that a lot of the reasoning behind this is that most Americans drench their bathroom in cleaning products because they are terrified of “butt-borne” diseases.

Disinfectants need to be used more in the kitchen, he explained, and said that Americans are doing a great job with the bathrooms, but kitchens could use some more work.

“We also spend less time cleaning than the previous generations,” said Gerba commented.

The need for a better cleaning also extends to the laundry room.

He explained that most people only wash their laundry for a short amount of time on a cold water cycle, allowing for the possibility of germs surviving through the wash.

“Your grandfather had cleaner underwear than you,” he stated.

People also spend more time in public places than any other generation, he said, giving the example of places like stadiums, large shopping malls and cruise ships that most people frequent.

The way to protect yourself is by practicing good hygiene and that means consistent hand washing and sanitary practices. Good hygiene alone has saved more lives than all the antibiotics, medicine and vaccines that exist today, he speculated.

Eighty percent of all infections are lurking in your everyday environment and are spread through fomites, which are inanimate objects that are involved in disease transmission, like a desk or a chair, he said.

“The other 20 percent are from sex and insect bites,” Gerba explained. “So if you give up sex and use a lot of insect repellent, you’re only going to avoid 20 percent of diseases you can get in your life, so it’s hardly worth it, in my opinion.”

Children, Gerba said, most commonly transmit diseases through their nose, mouth and eyes.

“You can actually transmit the common cold by rubbing it into your eye,” he informed the crowd.

Gerba shared the statistic that small children bring their fingers up to their face at least 81 times per hour.

“The best friend a germ ever had is a child because they are picking up germs all the time and they’re giving them to their caretakers,” he said.

When looking at ways that viruses were spread in homes, researchers have found that vacuum cleaners were a major contributor.

“We found that they’re basically meals on wheels for bacteria,” he said and explained that some hotel carpets have been linked to the cause of infections.

He also added that about 90 percent of the population will most likely be working in an office in the near future if they aren’t already, which leads to dealing with multiple surfaces covered in germs.

People in office environments are constantly touching similar surfaces, and desktops are some of the dirtiest places in an office along with the keyboard and mouse because it is rarely cleaned by janitorial staff.

“And people don’t clean it until they start sticking to it…” he said to the audience, adding that at a university, library tables and desktops are riddled with diseases.

In the office setting, they also looked at coffee cups on various desks and discovered that there were large amounts of fecal bacteria found in them because of the sponges and dishrags that are used to clean them.

When looking at the germiest jobs, though, he found that among the germiest jobs are teachers and least germiest are lawyers, he said.

They looked at elementary classrooms in grades fourth through sixth and found that one of the germiest places in the room was the pencil sharpener and the second highest was the top of the students’ desks.

Gerba said that after they found this out, they decided to see if they could prevent germs by disinfecting the kids’ desks after the elementary students were gone for the day.

After only cleaning the desks, they found that there was 50 percent less germs in the room compared with the classrooms that they did not clean.

The bottom line is, he said, wash your hands properly, use alcohol gel sanitizer and disinfect fomite surfaces because germ exposure is continually on the rise.

Sarah Reed can be reached at or 539-6858.

‘Fun’ facts:

• Surprisingly, one of the germiest places in a patient’s room at a hospital is the television remote.

• Most people didn’t start accepting that germs even existed until 1890 and at this time, infectious disease was the first cause of death and diarrhea was No. 2.

• About 80 to 90 percent of our time today, in the United States, is spent indoors, which is a big contrast from 100 years ago where the reverse was true.

• Restaurants were discovered to have dirtier countertops after they were wiped down than before because workers are supposed to put the rags in disinfectant solution, but most of the time they don’t do it properly.

• Technology has had a dramatic effect on the increase of germs in our lives like the self-checkout stands at grocery stores; 100 percent of the self-checkout stands tested had bacteria on them.

• 50 percent of reusable shopping bags at grocery stores that were tested had fecal matter inside of them.

Cockroach Control – The Best Method

August 28th, 2010

Once cockroaches infested an area it is not easy to eliminate them permanently. It is easier to prevent your place from cockroach invasion by making it unfriendly and hostile for their habitant. This will avoid the cockroach to nest which is the cause of infestation and also stop them from coming in the first place.

The first step to cockroach control is sealing and blocking all entry points into the house. Look for possible entry point such as ceiling hole, crack door and window, leak drainage, etc. You should run unused tap once in a while as they use dry pipes to hide and nest. Do not keep left over without proper cover and unattended. Keeping leftover in the refrigerator or cupboard with proper seal is always a better option for cockroach control. Otherwise, it will be an open invitation for the roaches into your house. Try not to keep dirty dishes for the next day, and if you must then put it in a sink along with utensil cleanser concentrate and hot water.

Payback Time

You should maintain a proper waste disposal system and never use a trash can without cover especially for kitchen. Even if your place is clean garbage can without cover will be the center of attraction for the roaches. Clean the garbage can everyday. Basic cleanliness in and around your house is the best method for cockroach control. You should be very particular about places where you store food and dine.

If your place is already infected with cockroaches then you have to use different approach to wipe out cockroaches. You can call an exterminator for cockroach control and termination which will require going through different treatment depending on the extent of the attack.

Cockroach trap and cockroach bait are commonly used method as a means of cockroach control. There are many products available in the market which can be effective means to eradicate roach problem if the infestation is mild. Cockroach repellent is also another popular method for cockroach control which usually comes in spray container. You can spray the repellent at areas where roaches are likely to gather.

Another popular method to kill roaches is the use of boric acid or borax. The borax is mixed with flour, chopped onions and sugar along with water to make a paste. Make small balls from the paste and place it around the house for the roaches to eat. The roaches will eat and carry it to their nest killing their young ones and other adult roaches. While using this method you should keep the bait out of reach from kids and pets. This formula is powerful and lasting because the poison bait is distributed in their nest.

Sooke jewel still blazes local food trail

May 30th, 2010

Calling it the “granddaddy” of the local food movement in British Columbia, Sooke Harbour House was given a Lifetime Achievement Award at Vancouver Magazine’s 21st Annual Restaurant Awards last week.

The magazine honoured owners Sinclair and Frederique Philip for blazing a trail in promoting regional foods and producers over more than three decades at their award-winning seaside inn and restaurant.

“Long before the 100-Mile Diet, before Bishops and Ocean Wise and the word ‘locavore,’ there was Sooke Harbour House,” said Christina Burridge of Vancouver Magazine, adding that while regional cuisine is now garnering much attention “every proponent of regional dining owes a debt to the locavore granddaddy Sooke Harbour House.”

“Sooke Harbour House has been celebrated by everyone from Condé Nast Traveler to Wine Spectator, and has drawn discerning guests from around the world, but it’s the Philips’ three decades of infusing visitors, chefs, and staff with their knowledge of place that has helped define West Coast food and earned them this award,” Burridge said.

The Philips said serving local foods was never about being in vogue. “In 1979, when we started to serve local food, we had no idea that eating regionally and seasonally would become as popular as it is today,” said Sinclair Philip. “We simply thought, with such an abundance of high quality regional ingredients, why would we need to bring in foods from anywhere else? We weren’t trying to start a trend, it was just common sense, and also the way we used to eat when we lived in rural France.”

Almost all of the food served at the Sooke Harbour House has come from the Philips’ own certified organic gardens and farm, local area farms in Sooke and Metchosin and the ocean and forests at their doorstep, including twenty different types of seaweeds and large numbers of indigenous plants, berries, wild herbs and mushrooms.

This year also marks the 21st consecutive year that the Sooke Harbour House Hotel has received the award as Best Vancouver Island Restaurant.

Two major Victoria performing arts groups get to wipe some expenditures off their balance sheets and a small local company gets a spotlight after signing a new partnership agreement this month. Both sides come out of the wash looking pretty green. WetCleaner, which calls itself the city’s only environmentally friendly non-toxic dry-cleaning business, will clean the performance costumes of Pacific Opera Victoria and the Victoria Symphony in exchange for sponsorship. “We are a small one-outlet family business [so] the opportunity to use of cleaning in exchange for sponsorship is an excellent opportunity for us to give to the arts and raise awareness of our unique business,” says Dave Hatt, who has owned WetCleaner with wife Lucinda since 2007. Hatt has plans to expand in the region while building a retail and commercial client base. The Hatts already work with large companies looking to reduce environmental footprints, including the Inn at Laurel Point and Harbour Towers Hotel. Call 250-381-2221 or thewetcleaner.com

Paul Gilbert has been named executive director of the Robert Bateman Centre at Royal Roads University, continuing a long relationship with the artist that started in 1965 when Gilbert was a high school art student. Gilbert, who graduated from Mount Allison University in 1974 with a bachelor of fine arts, had been interim director of marketing at The Art Gallery of Ontario prior to joining Royal Roads. Before the gallery, he developed the brand behind Aeroplan’s loyalty program. Gilbert also brings an extensive background in environmental education and, together with his personal connection to Bateman as a mentor, is expected to be a key in the centre’s fundraising objectives. The Robert Bateman Centre was developed to create a catalyst for dialogue, research, education and discovery of the environment through outreach and involvement in stewardship and life-long learning for students and visitors. Bateman, by the way, turned 80 yesterday.

The B.C. Fruit Growers Association will be selling apples for 12 cents a pound May 29 at James Bay Farmer’s Market. The point is to draw attention to the plight of the growers as that paltry price was the average payment apple farmers received for the 2009 crop year. Spokesman Fred Steele said some form of price stability is needed to ensure the survival of B.C.’s tree fruit industry. He said some of problems growers face were a direct result of government actions, citing free trade agreements, the Agricultural Land Reserve, fallout from the Columbia River Treaty and increased costs from new food safety regulations. “We do expect there would be some offset relief by at least having a level playing field in the arena of competition in the marketplace,” said Steele.

Dan Savard, senior collections manager of the Royal British Columbia Museum’s anthropology audio visual collection, has a fascinating new book on store shelves this week. Images From the Likeness House explores the relationship between First Peoples in B.C., Alaska and Washington and the photographers who took their pictures from the late 1850s to the 1920s. Photos are untouched and range from the earliest glass-plate images to snapshots taken on nitrate film. Photographers often travelled far from their studios to make visual records, carry heavy glass plates by boat and wagon. “In one of the photos, you can see a metal stand behind the feet of Tsimshian chief Arthur Wellington Clah — this was, presumably, for him to lean against during the long exposure time,” said Savard. The image was also inspiration for the book’s title. After having the photo shot in Maynard’s Photography in Victoria, the chief wrote in his diary: ‘Rebekah ask if I going likeness house. So I go. To give myself likeness.” The book is at most stores and the museum shop for $39.95.

Trumansburg superintendent bemoans budget cuts

May 13th, 2010

TRUMANSBURG — The question of how to balance educational concerns with monetary restrictions was the dominant theme at Wednesday’s Trumansburg Board of Education meeting, which featured a 2010-2011 budget hearing and brief introductions by school board candidates running for three vacant terms.

In Superintendent Paula Hurley’s opening remarks, she outlined the cuts that had been made to keep the tax levy as low as possible. These cutbacks included the loss of social studies, health and teacher aid positions, reduction of cleaning services, and reduction of building summer hours by 40 percent.

“Are we happy about it? Hurley said. “Absolutely not. Every cut we made will affect the students. But we needed to make these, we felt it was the best way to move forward while keeping a solid program for our students.”

Hurley said state aid is expected to decline in the next two school years. The reduction anticipated for next year can be offset by reserves, she said, but “in 2011-2012 we have tremendous concern about getting state aid.”

Residents asked only a few questions regarding buying new buses, repairing the school track, and how to keep tax increases minimal going forward.

“I cannot as a taxpayer continue to get increases at that rate,” said resident Ron MacLean of Lake Street.

The board originally aimed to keep the tax levy increase at about 2 percent, and a recent approved amendment to add back a music teacher position brought the levy-increase estimate to 2.9 without updated assessed value figured in, bringing the total current budget to $23,114,651.

The cost of purchasing the school buses would be $390,000. While the district allotted for the maximum cost to buy three buses, Hurley said, it may be required to purchase only two. State transportation aid offsets most of the costs, and budget literature distributed at the meeting indicates that district taxpayers pay less than 10 percent of the purchase price of new buses.

The five candidates competing for three school board positions each took a few minutes to make comments, but didn’t speak directly or specifically about the budget.

What makes Mrs. Clean the best in the northwest?

Well honestly, it’s because of our people, our commitment, and our very high standards. As a house cleaning company that’s been around since 1975, we take our job very seriously.

We go to great lengths to hire the right people to clean your home. To insure that we clearly understand all your needs and to have the best communication possible, all of our employees speak and read English.

Mrs. Clean never uses independent subcontractors or vendors. We send trusted, pre-screened, employees to clean your home. Each of our employees has had a criminal background check, has been thoroughly trained in the latest house cleaning techniques and is held to very high standards.

Mrs. Clean cleans your entire home each visit. Many other house cleaning services use a rotational system, meaning one portion of your home gets an in-depth clean on each visit. With Mrs. Clean, your entire home is thoroughly cleaned each and every time we service your home.

We carry insurance that protects you if an accident or injury happens on your property. We pay all federal, state, social security, payroll and workers’ compensation taxes. We are very proud of our people and proud of what we do, and it shows in the house and office cleaning you’ll get.

We review our competitors house cleaning rates and ensure that we are priced well below theirs. You can be assured that we are providing you with a great house cleaning or office cleaning value.

Did you know that there are many housekeeping companies that do not provide deep cleaning service? (this means lite housework only) Many maid services and house cleaning companies do not wash your dishes or clean your windows.

Doesn’t that seem strange? Well, it did to us. This is why we will customize any cleaning service. How disappointing it would be to come home after paying for house cleaning or maid service and there were dirty dishes in the sink.

We are a new kind of cleaning company. We take care of all your cleaning needs: Heavy duty scrubbing, shine, wash and organize your home.

Let us know what your custom cleaning needs are, we will do our best to do it all.

topWhat is Mrs. Clean’s guarantee?

We care about our house cleaning service to you, and we’re not satisfied if you’re not.

We offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If something was missed, and you are not satisfied with your house or office cleaning, please notify us within 24 hours of the cleaning and we will send the team back out at our expense to correct the problem.

We ask for performance feedback from all of our clients. We want to know if there was even a minor item you noticed. (of course, we love positive feedback too!) Our customer service and near-obsessive desire to please insures consistent and high quality cleaning.

topDo you have references?

Absolutely. We have testimonials visible on the site, and we have client references available by request.

topWhat kind of services do you offer?

A routine house cleaning is a thorough common or regular list of services. We clean your home from top to bottom, including bathrooms, bedrooms, kitchen, main rooms. Vacuum, clean, shine, dust, disinfect, and straighten the appearance in all rooms.

Detailed deep house cleaning, move-in house cleaning, move-out house cleaning, cleaning service includes everything in a routine house cleaning and then more. Perfect as spring-cleaning or when moving and want everything sanitized, shining and sparkling. We spot clean the walls and light fixtures. The oven, refrigerator, windows and even the window tracks are cleaned.

This is heavy duty, detailed house cleaning from top to bottom. Deep cleaning can be done on your house, office, apt and condo. It’s a great way to get your damage deposit back when moving, or to get your home ready to show when you have decided to sell.

Custom house cleaning is just, well, customized. Do you want us to clean your silk plants, fold your laundry and organize the pantry? Only clean the high traffic areas? Only clean the bathroom? Come in to help out the housekeeper? (we’ve really done this!) Clean to a set cost? Help polish the silver? (we’ve done this too!) No problem, we’d be happy to!

Just add or subtract any item from the routine and deep house cleaning service list, let us know of any other items you’d like us to assist with, then sit back and count on Mrs. Clean to get the job done.

Any thing else? We also provide business cleaning services. Detailed office cleaning and janitorial service. Needs obviously vary between an office setting, a hair salon and exercise facility. We do what need to be done to keep your business looking great.

Anything we can’t help with?

Due to health concerns (toxoplasmosis) we do not clean out cat boxes. Blood, vomit and anything else along these lines (either of human or animal origin) needs to be cleaned though a bio-hazard cleaning service.

topCan I trust the maids?

You can trust Mrs. Clean.

Our employees have all been background checked, and are covered by an honesty bond. No matter who you hire to clean your home, always insist on a criminal background check.

We’ve turned down 100′s of applications from house cleaners that have current house cleaning experience and a theft or other serious conviction.

Mrs. Clean sends pre-screened, trusted, and dependable employees to your door. If we would not trust someone in to clean our own home or office, we’re not going to send them to clean yours.

topIs Mrs. Clean licensed (does it matter)?

Mrs. Clean IS licensed and It DOES Matter.

The house cleaning industry has many unlicensed, uninsured, un-bonded individuals offering services. There are laws, rules, and protection afforded consumers when using a licensed company in the state of Washington.

Only licensed companies may carry industrial, liability, Labor and Industries, and bonding insurance protection (though a business license doesn’t guarantee that the company carries all these protections)

Checking whether a company is licensed is easy, you can review a copy of the master business license, registered with Washington state department of revenue. (This link takes you to the WA State Department of Revenue web site)

Hiring an unlicensed individual makes the ‘client’ technically and legally an employer, with all the tax, legal, and liability issues that come with it.

topAre Mrs. Clean’s employees bonded?

Mrs. Clean’s employees are bonded for your protection.

This bond insures, protects and compensates you if a employee of Mrs. Clean is guilty of theft.

topAre Mrs. Clean’s employees insured?

Yes, Mrs. Clean carries liability insurance.  Liability insurance protects you and will cover damage to your home or property that is caused by Mrs. Clean’s employees.

topHow do you determine rates?

You can be assured that we are providing you with a great house cleaning value. As a house cleaning company that’s been around since 1975, we periodically review our house cleaning competitors rates to insure that we are priced below theirs.

Our fees are based on the actual time it takes to clean your home in 1/4 hour increments. We have a 2 person, 1.5 hour minimum. The cleaning estimates we provide are based on the square foot, number of beds, baths, number of occupants, pets, etc.

Our rates, our guarantee and our dedication to you remain the same whether you book us for a one-time cleaning or sign up for weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly service.

House cleaning services have 2 primary ways of charging you, (and paying their employee) for the cleaning; either by the job, or by the hour.

When a company is vague about how much time to expect that they will spend in your home, it is usually because their employees are being paid a percentage of the job rather than on an hourly basis.

This means that the employees that are paid a percentage will be paid more per hour the faster they get out of your home. The problem with this business model is the potential for the employees to rush through the cleaning to get the highest possible hourly wage (e.g. surface cleaning).

In speaking with other cleaning company owners, this model results in a constant struggle between the employee’s desire to get the highest wage possible, vs. a quality cleaning job, done right the first time.

We pay our employees a fair hourly wage from start to finish, and employee wages do not increase if they rush through cleaning your home. Employee raises are based on merit. We reward our employees based on the quality of the job and the satisfaction of our clients.

In our experience, the more frequent your cleaning and the more familiar the team is with your home, the less time it will take to complete, so your charge is less.

It’s not right to continue charging you a higher rate for an easier and less time consuming job. Our estimates are competitive. Our goal is to charge a fair price, provide an exceptional cleaning and to pay our employees fairly for providing you with quality service.

topDo you offer cleaning specials, discounts or coupons?

We sure do. Click here to view our house cleaning specials.

topDo you require contracts?

We’re happy to earn your business each time we clean, and we’ve built this company doing just that.

topDo you bring the cleaning supplies and equipment?

We arrive with all cleaning supplies and equipment necessary to make your home or office sparkle. We even bring our own freshly laundered soft cotton towels to clean with.

You’ll be happy to know that many of our products are earth friendly and/or either unscented or low scented. If you’d like us to use your cleaning equipment or any special cleaning supplies, just let us know. We’d be happy to do so.

topWill you send the same maids each time?

Of course. Just let us know your preference. We’ll even rotate our teams at a clients request so they can be sure they have found just the perfect cleaning team for them.

Since we send out cleaning teams, if a person is sick or on vacation, you can be assured of seeing a familiar face.

topDo I have to be home when you clean?

Not at all. In fact, many clients prefer to give us a key so we can clean when they are away.

All keys in our possession are given a code designation and are secured when not in use. If you wish to hide a key on your premises, please call the office with the location so we can notify the team prior to their arrival.

topWhy does a one-time or first time house cleaning take longer than maintenance/routine house cleaning?

House cleaning is hard work. The first time we come out to clean your home or office, the job is scrubbing intensive as we get all areas cleaned to sparkling high standards.

Depending on the initial level of grime and clutter, a first-time cleaning can take 1.50-2.0 times longer than your subsequent cleanings.

We do not charge a higher rate for one-time cleanings, (as do some companies) but it obviously takes longer to clean a tub or shower that has a lot of build up than a tub that’s been cleaned frequently.

We will clean to whatever style you wish, but left to our own devices, we clean until your home shines.

topI’ve never had maid service, how do I get started?

Submit a cleaning quote request so you have an idea of the estimated cleaning time for your home.

Most people elect an initial deep cleaning to start, then switch to routine cleaning service at a frequency that suits them.

House cleaning is hard work, and a first cleaning or one-time cleaning is by far the most labor intensive as we are bringing a house up to sparkling clean.

After the first deep cleaning, it will take much less time (on an ongoing basis) to maintain that new high level of cleanliness. A first time deep cleaning usually takes 1.50 to 2.0 times longer than a routine cleaning.

Some people prefer to start using the compressed routine cleaning time and a priority list. Since it can take quite a bit more time to get the entire home up to that first high level of cleaning perfection, we’ll hit your priority areas first, and as we continue to come and clean your home, the little ‘extras’ that make up a deep cleaning will be rotated in, and eventually we will have your entire home sparkling. (Usually within 2-3 cleanings).

Note that we cannot guarantee that we will be able to complete all items you have listed on your priority list, or get the entire house cleaned if you elect to go with a fixed, compressed time limit for cleaning, but we will do the best job we can and clean as much as possible within your time limits.

Some clients enjoy service on a frequent basis, and have us clean only their high priority, high traffic areas. That’s perfectly fine with us! Just tell us the amount of time, give us your list and we’re good to go!

The difference between all these options is simply your desires and expectations. We’ll start up your service any way you’d like, and we’ll work as hard as we can on what ever type of cleaning you prefer. We’re here to make your life easier, just let us know how we can start.

Rest assured, no matter how we start, we don’t mess around with clean.

topHow do I prepare for my first cleaning?

First, discuss your wants and needs with the office to make sure your home specifics are well documented and clear. Provide us with your pet instructions, keys, alarms or any other specific instructions about your household. If you have any trouble areas, or pet peeves, mention them prior to our visit so we can bring any special cleaning supplies required and be prepared to address these issues on our first visit.

It’s fine to leave the cleaners a list, or you can email us at the office on any issue. We are happy to address even very specific items room by room. You can put your list out every time the maids come, especially if your needs or priorities change week to week.

Hands down, clutter is the #1 thing that slows us down.

Our house cleaners are ready to go right when we arrive. We really want to start on the dirty work, but first we have to pick up all the newspapers, magazines, the 500 Lego’s and bobby pins on the bathroom floor, cups and glasses, dirty dishes, clothing and shoes strewn all over that needs to be picked up and put away, before we even can start to clean.

Knick knacks are also known as clutter.

Now I realize that knick-knacks can be treasured above all else, but knick-knacks are clutter as well. The simple fact that you have all these little treasures means that extra dust and grime has built up in the general area. (It takes quite a bit of time to wipe down those 30 miniature vases on your shelf, so I’m pretty sure you do not clean it very frequently, if at all.)

We don’t mind picking all the stuff up- don’t forget we are getting paid for it. But it is not the most effective use of your money and the time we should be spending on the real reason you hired us to come to your home.

Does this make sense?

What task is more important to you? Picking up Tommy’s legos and all of Nicole”s clothes and the dishes strewn about in her room, or really scrubbing that dirty bathroom till it sparkles?

Of course, we do pick up all the clutter we find, it’s part of our job. But be aware that it will cause your cleaning to take a longer if the amount of clutter is excessive.

topWhat days do you work?

We are available to make your home shine Monday through Friday. Saturday’s are available too, though our cleaning rate is slightly higher on the weekend.

Openings are available for either one-time, weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly cleaning services.

topWhat time will you arrive?

We place reminder calls the day before your scheduled house or office cleaning. An estimated time of arrival (ETA) will be provided at that time. The ETA will be as accurate as we can possibly make it (e.g. 11ish).

Each of our cleaning team has 4-6 jobs scheduled each day. The clients scheduled before you, as well as our famous Seattle traffic may sometimes impact the accuracy of our arrival time.

We make every attempt to arrive very close to our scheduled time, but some things are out of our control.

We ask for your understanding if we are running behind, each of our teams carry GPS locators. If you would like to see where they are and get an updated ETA, please call the office.

If you have a critical timing issue, please let us know, and we will do our best to try to accommodate it.

topDo you send an individual or a team of maids?

Mrs. Clean has about 20 background checked employees. They are broken into 1, 2 and 3 person teams. We most often send a 2 person cleaning team depending on the client’s home size and personal preference.

topCan I leave a note for the team?

It’s a good idea to communicate either to the office or the house cleaning team if you want special attention to an area, or if you are pleased with the job or have concerns.

We contact all of our clients after their initial cleaning to ask for feedback. Every client has different wants, needs, and expectations, so the more communication the better.

Our employees strive to provide impeccable service, but we are human and misunderstandings happen occasionally.

We welcome the opportunity to improve our service to you.

topHow do I make my payment?

  • Payment is due at the time of service.
  • We accept cash, check, Visa, Master card, American Express, and Discover Card.
  • Returned checks are subject to a $40.00 processing fee.
  • If full payment is not received at the time of service, billing clients are assessed an additional $15.00.
  • Late fees accrue at $19 per month for balances under $250, $39 per month for those above $250.

topWhat if something was missed and I am unhappy with my cleaning?

Please call us within 24 hours if something was missed during your cleaning. We try very hard to please our clients, but sometimes we do make mistakes. We guarantee our services, so we will return to correct the problem at no additional charge.

If something small was missed that you would just like to bring to our attention, please do send us feedback, call, email, or leave a note for the team the next time they come out.

But please do let us know, we would not want to make the same mistake twice. Communication is very important. If we don’t hear from you, we will assume everything is well.

We welcome and encourage all feedback that will help us improve our service to you.

topWhat if something valuable was broken when the maids cleaned my home?

We treat your home or business with as much care as if is was our own, and of course we carry insurance if there is an unfortunate mishap. If you have any irreplaceable or high value items in your home, please notify the office or the team so we do not risk damaging them.

topWhat if I forget the team is coming to clean my home or office?

We call all our clients the day before the scheduled cleaning to remind them of their cleaning appointment.

If the team is dispatched, drives to your home, and we can’t get in to clean, a $45.00 trip fee will be assessed. This is a minimal fee that is in place to cover the cost of our transportation and employee wages as they travel to and from your home.

Please call us to cancel the cleaning prior to the scheduled day to avoid this charge.
