Better Sleep Council’s sleep tips on YouTube: youtube.com/watch?v=Fk8iajREfiE

when we were newlyweds, my husband and I heard a lot of mildly naughty jokes about sleeping together.

But for us, sleeping together – that is, actual sleeping – was no laughing matter.

John snored, I twitched. he stayed up late, I got up early. he liked a cold room with the blankets untucked, I wanted the blankets tucked in to keep me warm.

Neither of us was getting much good rest.

We were not alone: Lots of couples have sleep habits that keep each other awake.

The Better Sleep Council, funded by the mattress industry, surveyed 1,000 Americans in 2007 and found 1 in 3 reporting that their partner’s sleep habits affected their own sleep.

But, say designers and therapists, there are plenty of creative solutions to such problems.

“I’m a hopeless romantic,” said Beverly Hills, Calif., designer Christopher Grubb, who likes helping clients enjoy sleeping in the same room.

Snoring, he says, is a common problem among his clients. one found relief with an anti-snoring pillow from Sona, one of several companies that offer pillows designed to help prevent snoring by keeping the sleeper’s airway open.

Grubb also suggests sheets with a high thread count to maximize comfort, a mid-weight comforter to balance different temperature preferences, and beds that cater to partners’ different needs.

Sometimes, that can mean two mattresses, side by side. for example, Leggett & Platt offers a bed base called the Prodigy.

Imagine two hospital beds side by side, each of which can be raised and lowered independently, plus a massage feature that can be used as a silent alarm in the morning. each partner has a separate mattress and can choose its firmness.

Going to this extra effort is worth it, says Tina B. Tessina, a psychotherapist who blogs as Dr. Romance and is the author of “Money, Sex and Kids: stop Fighting about the three things That can ruin your Marriage” (Adams Media, 2008).

“Sleeping apart can contribute to the disconnect that plagues many relationships. It just makes it easier to avoid each other, when what’s really needed is connection and contact,” Tessina said.

Barbara Bartlein, a clinical psychotherapist in Milwaukee and author of “75 things To Improve your Marriage Without your Spouse even Knowing” (Trade Paper Press, 2010), says that sleep is important but so is the connection from sleeping together.

“The key is you must also take the time for physical closeness and intimacy,” she says. “Many couples start the night together and then move apart if one person is moving, snoring, etc.

“One of the advantages of sleeping together is you have the opportunity for bedroom talk. This is the especially intimate talk that couples do in the dark that no one else ever hears.”

Don’t be afraid of unusual solutions if they work for you.

Leta Hamilton gets her togetherness by sleeping in a king-size bed with her infant and toddler while her husband sleeps on the floor.

Hamilton, host of the Internet radio show “The Way of the Toddler Hour,” says her husband, James, prefers sleeping on hard surfaces and likes sleeping by himself. Their arrangement keeps him in the same room with the rest of the family.

“We like the time we spend together as a family before going to bed. It’s special,” say Hamilton, of Sammamish, Wash. “All of this may sound very weird, but every night I lay in bed and think how lucky I am.”

Little things like blankets and alarm clocks also can make a difference.

Lissa Coffey, lifestyle spokesperson for the Better Sleep Council, says she and her husband prefer different temperatures and sleep schedules.

She has a single electric blanket on her side of the bed so she can be toasty warm, while he prefers to sleep cooler. Coffey sleeps later, so her husband uses a soothing alarm that doesn’t disturb her in the morning.

What worked for me and my husband?

First we both sought help from the University of Michigan Sleep Disorders Clinic.

Doctors found John’s snoring wasn’t just bothering me; it was keeping him from getting quality sleep. so they fitted him with a mouthpiece to open his throat.

My study confirmed what John already knew: I wiggled dozens of times an hour all night long. The doctors offered medication also used to prevent seizures, but since my movement wasn’t harming my sleep, we opted for a nonmedical solution.

We put two twin mattresses on a king-size frame with a tiny space between them. We get those pillow talk moments, and I can twitch all night without disturbing hubby’s sleep.

Which might be why these restless newlyweds have made it to 10 years of marriage.

Goa Tourism Concerned Over Narcotics & Sex Exposures In ?Dum Maro Dum?! – Planet Bollywood News

February 21st, 2011

Goa Tourism Concerned over Narcotics & Sex Exposures in ?Dum Maro Dum?! – Planet Bollywood Special Correspondant           Let us know what you think about this story Two months before its release, Rohan Sippy’s ‘Dum Maro Dum’ has rattled Goa’s tourism industry as initial reports about the Abhishek Bachchan-starrer suggest that the movie delves a lot into the state’s narcotics mafia and sex trade.

Both the contentious issues have put Goa on the international map of infamy and with ‘Dum Maro Dum’ only set to reinforce the same negative image, the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) is simply not happy.

“The censor board should have cut out the objectionable parts, if it portrays the state in a bad light,” Gaurish Dhond, president of the TTAG, told reporters here Friday.

Comprising of stakeholders of the travel and tourism industry in Goa, the TTAG for nearly three decades now has been the voice of the trade here.

“The film could have bad repercussion for tourism in Goa, if it throws up scenes of prostitution and drugs,” Dhond said.

Set in Goa, the film sees Abishek as a police officer and also stars Deepika Padukone and Bipasha Basu. the first look of the Fox Star-produced movie has all the nefarious ingredients, which has put the state under negative spotlight in the recent past.

In bold big-size letters, ‘Drugs’, ‘Cocaine’, ‘Sex’ and ‘Ecstasy’ run through the racy promo, which also shows rave party scenes and sexy bikini-clad foreigners.

“British (teenager) Scarlet Keeling’s death case was hyped so much that people started feeling that our beaches are unsafe, which was not true at all in the first case. And now this,” Dhond said.

Known for its beaches, Goa annually attracts 2.4 million tourists, nearly half a million of whom hail from European countries.

Accusing the media and filmmakers of going overboard while portraying Goa as a sex destination, Dhond said the reputation of Goa is at stake.

“Goa has been built as a tourist destination over the years. you cannot allow some film to condemn it overnight. we have worked very hard for this brand. why is Goa only being projected in a bad light? Drug abuse, rapes are being highlighted in a big way like this, which spoils the reputation of the state,” he said.

Superintendent of Police Atmaram Deshpande said they have not written to the producers of the film seeking a pre-release screening.

“We have not issued any letter to the producers of the film,” said Deshpande, a spokesperson of the Goa police.

‘Dum Maro Dum’ is set for an April 22 release.

In retail shopping frenzy, it’s all about the gadgets

January 15th, 2011

Yola Dorvil didn’t want to buy the same old boring gift for her office holiday gift exchange. But she had no idea what to get.

Dorvil found her answer in JCPenney’s gift shop at Aventura Mall: a pair of Sharper Image binoculars with a built-in digital camera that takes photos of the magnified image.

“I figured it was unusual,” said Dorvil of Miami. “It’s also universal — it works for men or women.”

JCPenney, Macy’s and Kohl’s are among the department stores that have been beefing up the gift selection of electronic gadgets, toys and stocking stuffers. Department stores want customers to see them as more than a place to buy a new tie or a sweater. The hope is that these impulse items will catch the eye of that clothes shopper and give him or her a reason to spend more. or maybe lure another shopper to the store’s website.

With increasing competition at every turn from both traditional retailers and online shopping, department stores want to hold on to market share and sales that might have gone to a big box store like best buy or Wal-Mart, industry experts say.

“Everybody is trying to go where it’s hot,” said Britt Beemer, chief executive of America’s Research Group. “The last few years all the growth has been in electronics. Everybody is out there chasing the same pie.”

That’s why you’ll now find department store shelves packed with goods ranging from radio-controlled helicopters to telescopes to flexible neon pink keyboards.

`I think everybody wants to give that wow gift, something that’s memorable,” said Steve Lawrence, executive vice president and general merchandise manager for JCPenney. “It’s our job as a retailer to find those things.”

The concept worked for Dorvil, who has been watching the gift shop at JCPenney all season. She was intrigued by a wall-size screen projector that she snatched up for $79.99 for her two sons, and a $9.99 dog bed for her Maltese.

IMPULSE BUYS

It’s all about the unique, impulse items designed to encourage customers already visiting the department store to spend more money.

“Five years ago the traditional department store wouldn’t have the assortment you do today,” said Tracey Jones, general manager of the JCPenney at Aventura. “If somebody else can sell it then I can, too.”

at JCPenney that includes the nostalgia popcorn cart for $149.99, an air hockey hockey table for $19.99 and a jellyfish lamp for $9.99.

think of it as sort of a poor man’s Neiman Marcus Christmas Book. The difference is that at mass market department stores like Macy’s and JCPenney the prices of these gifts are largely in the $20 to $50 range with a handful pushing the $100 mark or just over. plus, there’s also a wide assortment of stocking stuffers for $10 and under.

while JCPenney has been offering its innovative gift shop for the past several years, the concept is new this year at Macy’s.

“We have been listening to our customer and what she wants,” said Martine Reardon, executive vice president of marketing for Macy’s.

“It’s to make her life easier so she can make one trip to Macy’s and get all items on her shopping list.”

The department store assembled a collection of largely exclusive merchandise, curated from around the world, with items to appeal to the fashion-forward, tech-savvy and traditional customers. You’ll find bright-colored rain boots, a USB hub designed like a robot, dancing-bear speakers and retro game sets.

ANSONIA BRASS AND COPPER ANTIQUE MANTLE CLOCK ORIGINAL

January 10th, 2011

We find the most interesting Antique Clocks. here are the best deals we found for ANSONIA BRASS AND COPPER ANTIQUE MANTLE CLOCK ORIGINAL for sale on the Internet. This auction is now closed. $10.99 if you want to see its description or find similar items currently for sale please click here. What are you looking for ? ANSONIA BRASS AND COPPER ANTIQUE MANTLE CLOCK ORIGINAL Picture(s) and Description:

This is an EXTREMELY BEAUTIFUL, RARE, AND EXCITING example of a very early Ansonia Brass and Copper Co. large ogee Mantle Clock in near all Original near perfect condition. it was made in the late 1850s. it is an extremely classy “early Americana” mantle clock in need of a warm loving home. I am sorry the pictures did not come out better than they did, as they don’t show the beauty of this rare treasure. This is one of the very first clocks made by the original Ansonia Co. the Old Ansonia Clock Co. , Ansonia, Conn. was destroyed by fire in 1854. the ruins were sold to Phelps, Dodge and Co. from 1854 to 1869 Phelps, Dodge, and Co. produced very few clocks with the label of Ansonia Brass and Copper Co. the new Ansonia Co. was formed in 1878 and had 2 factories, one in Ansonia, Conn. and a new factory in Brooklyn, NY. This was formed by Phelps, Dodge and Co. and Henry Davis of Brooklyn. it flourished until after WW I and went into decline, was sold, and was moved to Moscow. Ansonia made many very high quality clocks. This clock is made of Dark Walnut with Burl, and after all this time is nearly perfect and is almost all original! This clock is much more beautiful than the pictures. it measures 25 ¾ inches high, 15 ¼ inches wide and 4 ¼ inches deep. it has a 30 hour, time and strike movement which chimes the hours on a large gong with a very nice sound the movement, plates, and gears are made of brass. This clock works beautifully and keeps good time. the movement runs very well and keeps good time. the movement was just cleaned, oiled, pivots polished and bushings added where needed. This clock will not need servicing for many years to come, and is ready for the next 100 years! This is a labor intensive service, with many clockmakers charging 250.00 and up. We recommend having it oiled every 2 to 3 years to keep it in tip-top shape! With the purchase of this clock for an additional $ 2.25 we will include an oiler kit with a professional oiler loaded with enough oil to oil approximately 50 clocks with easy instructions so you could even do it yourself! the power for the clock comes from 2 weights (these are I’m sure the original weights) rather than springs. Weights cause the clock to keep better time rather than springs. Springs cause a clock to run faster when they are first wound and slower as they wind down. the case is especially beautiful with my favorite its original beautiful bottom tablet (hand painted reverse painting) with super wavy glass! it is very unusual for a clock this old to be in this great condition. the top glass is also original and wavy glass. the sides and back of the clock are also in near perfect condition. it was no doubt made by a master craftsman by the quality of the construction. no missing veneer at all! rare. the dial is a correct replacement dial in great condition. This clock has lasted 150 years! (Also no extra screw holes anywhere around the original movement with the original seat board with its original hooks and nuts). the hands are also original. Complete with the original pendulum and the original crank to wind the clock. Very rare to have the original pendulum and crank! the original paper label is in as perfect as they get condition with lots of neat very old information and directions, even has the label of the original jeweler who first sold the clock. (see picture) These antique clocks amaze me – could you imagine any other consumer product still working after nearly 150 years! and the truly amazing thing with proper care they will work easily past the next 200 years!) if you are looking for a very old antique clock that looks like it was cherished its whole life – this is it! it almost looks like it was put away in a safe place and hardly used (for its age). Antique Clocks are a Fine Investment. each one has a unique quality, as well as appreciating in value and beauty with age. You will become attached to your antique clocks and they will become a meaningful and important part of your life adding untold joy each day you own them. They can be handed down from one generation to another as they increase daily in value. Antique clocks serve many purposes other than being useful in telling time, decorative in your home, a valuable asset in your estate and above all a faithful servant and friend which will be true to you to the end of time. This rare clock will be packed very very very carefully to insure a safe delivery and the buyer is to pay $32.50 for shipping and ins. This clock is quite large and heavy requiring an oversize carton and lots and lots of packing materials to keep it safe. I will gladly answer any emails promptly. I have always hated that “reserve” when I have bid myself so this fine clock has no reserve and a low starting bid . I will be glad to help you set up your new clock, or answer questions long after the sale via email. thank you very much for looking. a careful inspection is done each and every time during the packing process by “Wild Thing” Master Packing Kitty EBAY SITE SECURITY PROVIDED BY CJ KITTY (trained watch cat) (always vigilant) Our Purchasing Department travels throughout the United States searching for the “perfect clock”! Here’s “the family” travelin’ to the next clock destination a Highly Skilled Technician (AKA Wild Thing) checks the movement one last exhausting time to be sure all is right before being carefully placed back in its case. Neon Clocks – Time Illuminated With Neon Clocks

June 4th, 2010

Neon Clocks – Time Illuminated With Neon Clocks

Neon Clocks – Fancy and flashy

Despite the subheading seeming to refer to a Las Vegas showgirl, this article is about neon clocks. Perhaps some explanation would be in order, since the words “neon” and “clock” are not often found in such intimate proximity. The term refers to clocks with neon lighting, the result of which proves useful in more ways than one. With their powerful lights, these illuminated timepieces are easily readable even in the dark. The neon lighting can be bent and twisted into different shapes, so there is theoretically no limit to the designs one can use. The clocks are no less subject to whimsical and practical turns of style, and there are many clock designs to suit different tastes and design themes. They are fancy and flashy, but not necessarily worthless as a certain old saying would have you believe. Of course, the neon lighting consumes more electricity than conventional lighting. Due to the increased energy consumption and powerful illumination, these are best suited to public places with low light, like bars, but do not let that stop you from getting one for your home. These are sure-shot centerpieces and conversation items, so decorating with them provides you with utility and style.

Neon Clocks – Timepieces over time

Most people are aware of the history of clocks, and neon clocks clearly stem from that long sequence of innovations and inventions. Timekeeping used to be extremely simple, relying on the position of the sun and moon in the sky. Unfortunately, this was useless during cloudy days and nights, plus civilization was evolving and requiring more definite measures of time. Sundials and the like came about, and they did indeed provide more discrete and clear measurements of time. But like the previous time-telling method, they were worthless at night and on cloudy days. An improvement on the sundial, using candles that burnt at known speeds proved useful at night, but it was a bit costly and was not always accurate. Water clocks used the power of water, controlled with troughs, mechanical escapements, and measured amounts, to mark the passing of defined units of time. Water clocks failed when there was too little or too much water, plus parts needed maintenance and replacement, and they were often large and expensive. Spring power and miniaturization saw the introduction of pocket watches, wristwatches, and standing clocks, but they needed regular winding to keep time properly. Finally, with the advent of electricity, time could be tracked using vibrations of materials with known electrically-induced frequencies. Finally, digital clocks that used liquid crystal displays showed time in easy to read numbers. The faces of clocks also saw changes in relation to the eras when they were made or which they were made to look like. Today, there are so many clock designs to choose from, with aesthetic elements from various countries and multiple subcultures.

Neon Clocks – Under the neon lights

Neon clocks use neon lights, but neon lights do not necessarily use the noble gas neon. The first neon lights used neon, which is why the name stuck. At the time of their burgeoning popularity, they were dubbed “liquid fire” due to their fluid appearance as evidenced by twisting into various designs. The basic mechanism requires electricity at high voltages to energize gas molecules and thus release photons, or quanta of light. Though in theory all gases can be electrified and made to glow, most gases cannot sustain their integral nature and thus the lamp would go bust too quickly. Neon, as a noble gas, retains its quality, so the lamp stays usable for a long time. Other noble gases like helium, argon, krypton, and xenon are also used, but neon is the most common. Using the properties of these gases under energizing, the ultraviolet rays released are harnessed using tubes with phosphor finishes. These phosphor compounds produce various colors of light when struck by ultraviolet rays, which is why we have such a large range of colors for neon lighting. Due to the gaseous nature of the electrical medium and the coating methodology for phosphors, it becomes possible to bend and twist tubing into different designs. The only real requirement is that the tube should be airtight and not blocked anywhere along its length. At the two ends of a neon tube, electrodes are installed, and are how electricity moves through the gas. At the flick of a switch, they glow and flash, subject to the whims of man in their use.

Neon Clocks – Light and time

Though light and time has yet to reveal all their secrets to scientists, for the common person neon clocks are pretty much the summation of the two. A neon clock is bright, so one could read the time, day or night. The neon lights are flamboyant and very eye-catching, so the potential for advertising exists. Indeed, neon lighting is best known as a commercial advertising device, meant to grab attention and lure customers. Cities like Las Vegas, in the USA, are replete with these lights, and many things can be found under their neon glow. The best place for one of these luminescent chronographs is a public room, say a game room or living room at home, or in a bar or on a street frontage. If anything else, it will make it easier for patrons to keep track of time, should they be sober enough to read the time. Also, the design paradigms popularized as Fifties and Sixties styles, respectively reflective of 1950’s and 1960’s USA, use neon lights profusely, so any diner or pub employing these designs would find a neon-framed clock ideal. Modern artists play around with neon lamps and create fantastic designs, designs which are sometimes translated onto these illuminating and illuminated chronographs. One could have the neon lamps spell out words and names or have them twisted into caricatures of objects. Various logos and advertising elements can be printed onto the clock face, and the neon framing would be responsible for drawing attention to it. The hardest part about Neon Clocks is choosing one!
