Old Postage Stamps
The old postage stamps book I bought from Amazon has now arrived. It is called the British Stamp Market Values 2009. I have used it to go through my Grandad’s old postage stamp collection and marked off each of the stamps that my Grandad had.
It was a fun activity to do. I did it with my girlfriend and it took me a couple of evenings to go through them all. We could mark off nearly all except for special edition album and the foreign stamps. I will have to do some investigative work into findout out more about the special edition old postage stamps.
I have now been through and seen my Grandad’s old postage stamps one by one.
I think he must have have catalogued his in the same way as I found an old Stanley Gibbons price booklet called Collect British Stamps from 1980. My Grandad marked off with a cross the stamps he had in his collection. I saw some old postage stamps in that book that I liked the look of and wouldn’t mind adding to my collection.
He also had another book which looked really special. It was called the Price List for British Colonial Stamps and Foreign Sets. The book looked in mint condition and because it was part of his collection I assumed that it was about 30 years old.
The last date of stamps in the book was from 1948. I can’t believe that this book must be nearly 60 years old!
I now have a clear picture in my head how I will add to my Grandad’s old postage stamps. I want to add to it in a way that adds to its actual value not just sentimental value. I will do a few first day covers but that I think I will move on to miniature sets, presentation packs. I am coming to the conclusion that being less personal will add to its value in the future.
I have done a recording of these books on You Tube which I hope will help preserve them.
Now that I have my strategy sorted for buying old postage stamps I think I will now start looking on Ebay.
