Combs and Hair Accessories (Antique Pocket Guide) Reviews

April 24th, 2011

From the Antique Pocket Guides series – a useful series for the collector of small antiques. Collecting small antiques can be of absorbing interest, partly because of items are easy to display and partly because they can be found in a great variety of places, including antique shops, public auctions, bric-a-brac stalls, jumble sales and flea-markets. each title in this new series is written by an expert in his or her chosen subject. there is a wealth of practical advice to help the novice over any initial hurdles, guidance on prices and over 100 illustrations to help with identification. each book could lead the way to a remarkably satisfying hobby. The practice of decorating the hair itself, as distinct from the wearing of elaborate head-dress, first came into vogue in the second half of the 16th century. It became the custom for upper class women to wear little or not head-covering, and to adorn their complex coiffures with decorative accessories. The collecting of these accessories today is a relatively unexplored field and, so far, little has been written about them. The accessories covered here date from the mid-18th century up to about 1940. Ornaments of an earlier date are museum pieces now, and outside the scope of the average collector. likewise, the emphasis here is not on priceless diamond tiaras, but on ornaments of a more modest nature. Primary jewels, set with diamonds and valuable stones, were designed to serve through several generations, and were mostly conservative in design. those in lest costly materials could be more innovative, reflecting changing tastes and new discoveries. They were not intended to last beyond the immediate fashion. nevertheless, many have survived in excellent condition, and are widely available to the present-day collector.

Inside Knicks Bowl 12 - Latino Sports – News, Blog, Videos, Collectables, and Memorabilia

NEW YORK – It’s a famous refrain amongst athletes: I’ll do anything for the kids.

On a rainy night in lower Manhattan, the 2011 New York Knicks got to show how much they love their little fans at Bowl 300, a bowling alley located at Chelsea Piers. it was Knicks Bowl 12, and while the faces have changed over the years, the message hasn’t.

Knicks great Cal Ramsey and actor Steve Schirripa laugh it up at Knicks Bowl 12. PHOTO BY OREN VOURMAN / LSVThe Knicks still get everyone out to help raise money for the Garden of Dreams Foundation, one that helps kids with obstacles get the chance to smile. Since its inception in 2000, it has raised over 1.7 million dollars for the over 165,000 children under its umbrella.

In addition to the Knickerbockers, there were appearances by Knick alumni, including John Starks, John Wallace, Charles Smith, Walt "Clyde" Frazier and Cal Ramsey. some of the kids in attendance did not know who these Knicks of greatness past were, but it didn’t stop them from getting their autograph, at least after getting the proper encouragement from their fathers, who seemed to be in awe of their childhood heroes.

Amar’e Stoudemire and Landry Fields couldn’t help but smile during the charity event, which helps so many young children. PHOTO BY OREN VOURMAN / LSVThe Knicks City Dancers cheered everyone on the bowling lane, which was adorned by flat screen TVs that ran highlights of the Knicks' season thus far.

What really seemed to get the attention of the children, though, was the makeshift locker room that stood in the middle of the alley. Fans could pretend they were dressing up for a chance to walk down the hardwood of Madison Square Garden as jerseys were hung up to play a game of dressup.

Collector opens bottled-up past

March 19th, 2011

THE Toowoomba Antiques and Collectables fair and Exhibition had everything from lace tablecloths to spinning tops and beer barrels, but for Jim Bell it was all about bottles.

mr Bell is a regular at the annual fair, which was held on Saturday.

an expert on antique bottles and old collectables, he is also an antiques dealer and display judge.

his table at the fair featured an impressive and valuable display of mostly glass bottles, but it was a convict-made ceramic ginger beer bottle from Tasmania that caught his eye.

“in the early days of the colony there were few tradespeople, so the convicts had to use their skills to make things,” mr Bell said.

“The beautiful part of it is that they stamped their names on these bottles, so we know this one was made in 1819 in ‘Hobart Town' by a convict named James Sherwin.

“From this one piece you can trace back an entire social history,” he said.

Today it is worth $1000.

mr Bell said collecting was going from strength to strength, with more people appreciating their cultural heritage.

an auction of bottles and collectables on Saturday night was expected to gross about $300,000.

show organiser Peter Hole said the fair was well attended, with devotees coming from as far as Perth, Hobart, Bundaberg and all over NSW and Victoria.

The callous treatment of Laura Ashley workers | Joe Higgins.eu

November 9th, 2010

Dublin’s Grafton Street has long been a major showpiece for what Ireland’s retailing business has to sell to the public in terms of consumer goods, from a needle, not so much to the proverbial anchor as to the €5,000 designer handbag.

This week, however, it is witness to another side of retailing – the mean and exploitative.

Toward the top of the street near St Stephen’s Green, passersby will see a picket of mainly women workers outside the now closed doors of the Laura Ashley store. The twenty two workers were told unceremoniously on 24 September that the shop was to close within weeks and that they would be paid the bare statutory redundancy. They were also told if there were any job vacancies in other Laura Ashley stores, they would have to apply for them as if they had no history with the company. Beyond this, the company refused to go, either in relation to saving the jobs or in the improvement of severance terms.

Horrified at the company’s crass attitude, these Laura Ashley workers, with their trade union Mandate, served strike notice and placed pickets on Friday of last week. Speaking with them on the picket line reveals much about their integrity as workers and the heartlessness some big business sectors against the background of the catastrophic crisis in the Irish economy.

Some of the workers on the picket line had worked for Laura Ashley for over ten years. Despite the fact that this company is a household name in trendy clothes and fancy house furnishing, their wages were pathetically low. Shop floor workers were paid €10.18 an hour which would give a basic pay of less than €20,000 a year before tax.

The best paid workers in the design section were on a wage of €11.44 an hour as well as a commission depending on sales. However, the commission was dependent on targets set by management which could be quite high. Just how modest their wages were, would be brought home to those in the design department who visited the luxurious homes of sometimes very wealthy clients of the company in order to advise them on expensive redecoration.

In view of the callous way they have been treated, the striking workers speak ruefully of their loyalty to the company and their willingness to always go the extra mile when asked. Sometimes this left them trying to answer difficult questions from customers. For example, last year, customers noticed huge discrepancies between the prices charged by Laura Ashley in Dublin and in Britain for the same items. One newspaper gave the example of a sofa retailing for €735 in Britain and the North but on sale for €1,080 here. When it appears to the customer that the explanation for this is the greed of the retailer, it puts staff in a difficult position.

Laura Ashley is now owned by Malaysian business interests. In the first half of this year, the chain’s profits were €11.4 million. The closure of the shop on Grafton Street was prompted by the interest which the Disney company has in taking over the premises. Disney wants to extend its merchandise outlets to Ireland. Consequently, the offer it made the management of Laura Ashley to buy the lease in Grafton Street was apparently too good to be turned down, albeit meaning that twenty two workers would lose out.

For now, the loyal workers of Laura Ashley are most disloyally left out in the cold by the company they served so well. However, their fellow workers in many other stores around the country should take serious note of how they have been treated. Should the company persist with its present attitude, the Grafton Street workers might decide to call on their colleagues in other stores to come out on strike in sympathy. Should that happen, it would be the most effective possible tool in obliging a truculent employer to come to heel.

Disney should also be put on the spot. The haste in throwing these workers on the dole may arise from management’s anxiety to oblige the Disney merchandise section to be installed in the Grafton Street premises in time for the Christmas consumer rush. Disney has a massively profitable media and entertainment conglomerate with total turnover reaching a massive €36 billion last year. Its merchandise arm, which is to take up operations in the premises from which the Laura Ashley workers are being evicted, made profits of $609 million last year around the world. The directors and major shareholders should be told that it would not be a good start to be associated with the callous treatment of Irish workers and that they should prevail on Laura Ashley management to accede to the workers’ demand for fair play before they move in.

Presents – 5 Top Tips

November 8th, 2010

It is a global custom to give gifts for such occasions as birthdays and wedding days, but after that is where the countries start to differ. Britons and people tracing their history back there give gifts on Christmas Day as well.

However, many other Europeans give gifts at Christmas on Saint Nicholas’ Day or December 6th. Non-Christian countries usually give gifts at New Year.

No matter what you do in your country, giving a present requires thought. The stores are usually full of junk at these present-giving times of the year, but there is also a lot of good stuff about, at a price. The alternatives are twofold basically.

You can either make something which will be one of a kind, I imagine that this includes personalizing a shop-bought gift or you can think outside of the box, which many people find quite difficult. Personally, I find it hard, but it does get easier the more often you try it and the better you know the person you are going to give the gift to.

Here then are a few ideas which you may decide to take on board ‘as is’, or they may inspire you on to better ideas. As I write, Christmas is coming up and then it is Saint Valentine’s day before you know it. We certainly get plenty of opportunity to practice buying presents in the West!

A Plot Of Your Own: I come from Wales in the UK (is there any other?) and up the way from me a local plot of green-belt land was in trouble. Experts said that it should be planted with trees, but the authorities did not have the money, so they advertised six feet square plots of land for sale with a sapling of your selection on it.

You also got a title deed, instructions and a photo. In addition, the tree would be taken care of for five years until it was established. I know that this is not the only place that did this and it was probably not the first either, but it makes a good gift for a teenager who is wondering what he or she can do to help the environment.

The Key To Success: some children and their parents will be grateful for this one. Search the second-hand shops for an older or even an unusual money box. Fill the money box up to a certain level with various coins that bring that level up to the value that you want to give, but leave plenty of room for the child to put money in too. Who do you give the key to? That depends on how well you know the child.

Starting A Collection: this is a brave, but good one. If you know the child well or are prepared to take on a commitment (such as a godparent should), you could select a set of collectables, like plates, glasses or coins and buy two or three pieces to start the collection off. You can add to it every year. Others will be thankful to you too because they will jump on the band wagon.

In The Bag: if your friend is an invalid or just is temporarily in hospital, it is beneficial to provide a wicker basket or a nice bag full of useful items. Choose the items to suit your friend, but everyone might like a writing pad, a pen, a comb or brush, wet wipes or tissues, a small book of verse, a miniature radio with ear plugs, a mirror, straws, a bottle opener, only you know, but you get the idea, I’m sure.

Stamp It: you can buy a large packet of literally thousands of foreign stamps for very little. Buy a stamp album and hinges and you could start a lifelong obsession. It also gives you gift ideas for years to come too.

USA. Mecum Auctions sells over a 100 vintage wooden boats for $4 million

October 21st, 2010

It was a significant weekend in the antique boat hobby as Mecum Auctions drew out the who’s who among classic boat collectors for the Warner Collection Auction event, where 126 vintage boats sold for nearly $4 million (excluding buyers’ premiums).

From major boat collectors and dealers to restorers and new hobbyists, bidders came from across the country as well as from overseas to attend the Oct. 16, 2010 auction in Winsted, Minn.

It is a strong indicator of the enthusiasm for boat auctions and we are excited about the prospects of this emerging market.”

The Warner Collection was started by lifelong collector F. Todd Warner, owner of Mahogany Bay, one of the world’s leading authorities on vintage watercraft. The collection includes wooden boats built from 1903 to 1996.

“I bought my first vintage boat at age 12 – a 1947 Higgins 17’ sport speedster – and from there I caught the bug,” Todd Warner explained. “I am a preservationist first and foremost, and it is important for these boats to be around generations from now. I am grateful to Mecum Auctions for helping me share this collection with such a wide range of enthusiasts because there truly is something for everyone who wants to be involved in the hobby, from duck boats and cabin cruisers to race boats and runabouts.”

The Mecum team delivered the signature entertainment-style auction they have become known for on their popular television series, Mecum Auto Auctions: Muscle Cars & More on Discovery Communications’ HD Theater. In addition to boats, they sold vintage inboard and outboard engines, collectible accessories and hard-to-find parts at the auction.

“There is nothing like the magic of an auction,” shared John Williams, a collector from Kentucky who purchased a 1932 Hacker 28’ runabout at the auction. “This is my 8th wooden boat, and my wife and I plan to use it on Lake Cumberland. I really love this boat and look forward to giving it the professional restoration it deserves.”
Curt Erikson, a 30-year wooden boat collector from Seattle, Ore., shared in the excitement: “This is the most exciting thing the hobby has seen in 20 years,” he said.

Pontypool woman reveals her 500-strong kimono collection

MAMIKO Markham’s fascination with the Japanese kimono began when she was five years old.

It was the start of a life-long passion that has seen her collect more than 500 ancient kimonos over four decades before using traditional techniques to revive them.

Mrs Markham, 48, born in Kyoto, Japan, would as a child cycle to the huge twice- monthly antiques market to spend hours looking at kimonos.

“While other girls bought toys, I spent pocket money buying kimonos while studying the craft. Traders introduced me to a designated ‘Living National Treasure’ weaver – a title given to a highly skilled person in Japan, and my education bloomed,” said Mrs Markham, of Commercial Street, Griffithstown.

“I’ve always been fascinated by the history of Japanese style and loved the colour, textures and craftsmanship of the kimono,” said the Asian crafts graduate.

“I developed an understanding of the dyeing and weaving technique of kimono material and the process of sewing it together,” added Mrs Markham, who has lived in Pontypool for the past five years with her husband, John, who she met while organising a fashion and antique textile exhibition and was meeting designers such as John Galliano in Paris.

Her kimono collection, of which 300 are stored in her home in Japan and on loan to art galleries, with many in Wales, are between 80 and 200 years old and includes the kimono worn at her wedding, her grandmother’s and great-grandmother’s weddings. From her workshop she uses her collection to design her own pieces, adapting them to fit the British woman’s shape.

“When I take them apart, wash and re-assemble a kimono, I continue the traditional process known as ‘Araihari’ and always have in my head the craftsmen who made them originally all those years ago.

“I really enjoy giving British women the chance to wear truly unique handmade garments and accessories. Women here are curvier than Japanese women, so I make them to suit their figures,” she added.

“I remake my kimono in different designs for day wear, evening wear, capes and even handbags.”

Mrs Markham’s passion for culture has led her to gain a doctorate in traditional Asian crafts, work as a textile lecturer at universities in Japan and as a curator in a museum in St Petersburg, Russia.

The couple regularly attend craft markets in Abergavenny, Hay-on-Wye, Brecon and Ludlow.
