Fifty million Americans have a disability, with two-thirds of them having a severe disability impacting normal activities of daily living, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Whether the disability is evident at birth or strikes in the prime of life or later years, people want to remain as independent as possible, with dignity and poise, connected to family and friends in the same way those without disabilities live their lives.
Carrying the theme, “A day for people with disabilities to explore new possibilities,” the disAbilities Expo on April 10 at Memorial Coliseum is bringing mobility and machinery, technology and tools, and expertise and examples to improve quality of life for people with disabilities and their families.
Turnstone Center for Children and Adults with Disabilities is organizing the event, the first of its kind in the region. AWS is the key sponsor.
‘Sesame Street’ special
The Northeast Indiana Disability Advocacy Coalition (NEIDAC) invites the public to “Abilities Abound … Realizing the Possible,” with Emily Perl Kingsley, author and 40-year writer for “Sesame Street.” The event is at 5:30 p.m. April 9 at the Holiday Inn, 4111 Paul Shaffer Dr., across from Memorial Coliseum.
Kingsley’s son, Jason, born with Down syndrome in 1974, was the impetus for her push to include children with disabilities in the “Sesame Street” cast. In 1987, she wrote “Welcome to Holland,” a short piece which compares the experiences of raising a child with special needs to that of traveling to Holland. She has authored more than 30 children’s books and two “Sesame Street” videos. Also at the event, several students with disabilities will be awarded $1,000 competitive Embolden Enrichment grants for post-secondary education opportunities. Admission to the event is $10 and RSVP’s must be made in advance by calling Fifth Freedom at 426-8789 or sending an e-mail to This column is the personal opinion of the writer and does not necessarily reflect the views or opinion of The News-Sentinel.
