Ke Alakai – BYU-Hawaii Student News Lab – Raynor Surf Boards: Surfboard shaping as an art.

March 14th, 2011

As a youth, Matty Raynor was like most of the other surf rats in Santa Cruz, California, always anxious for school to let out so he could go surf down at Steamer’s Lane.

but he was hungry for more than just waves. He craved creative outlets and developed an eye for design at age 14, when he shaped his first foam blank into a surfboard. Raynor was hired as a “shop slave” at a local surfboard factory where he idolized the veteran surfboard shapers there. they took him in and freely indoctrinated him with design theory. Raynor was observant and learned the tricks of the trade from many of these legendary shapers. Eventually he was skilled enough to fashion a surfboard of his own out of an uncut block of foam. Raynor started making his own boards and taking them out to his favorite surf breaks to test them out. By surfing a familiar wave he was able to see how a new board handled. He would stroke into a wave, hop to his feet, and go carving down the line, feeling the board under his feet. As he surfed he made note of size, buoyancy, responsiveness, and things he did and did not like. Then he would make the changes on his next board. As the years passed, Raynor became a true artisan with saws, planers, power sanders, and measuring tools. He started making surfboards not only for himself, but for his friends, and then their friends. Then in 2009 it happened—Matty Raynor created his own label—Raynor Surfboards. Raynor Surfboards has grown substantially out here at BYU-Hawaii in the past couple years. Nowadays it seems every surfer on campus is riding one. “Matty is the kind of shaper you’ve always wanted,” said Marc Winchel, a senior in accounting from San Diego, Calif. “He sits down with you and really wants to make the best board for you—something you really won’t find anywhere else.” “I’ve heard a lot of good things about Matty’s boards,” said Nathan James, a junior in business management from Sydney, Australia, as he held his brand new, never-ridden Raynor. “I’ve finally got myself one and am heaps keen to take it up to Rocky Point tomorrow and try it out.” Raynor is currently a junior in art and marketing and lives in TVA with his wife Lindsay and daughter, Avery Parker (15 months), and crafts his surfboards out of shaping rooms in Waianae, Wahiawa, and Southern California during the summer months. Below is an interview with artist, and master shaper, Matty Raynor. the Interview: BB: where is your favorite place to surf? MR: Easy–Goat Island. BB: What do you have to say to surfers thinking about getting a board from you? MR: Be honest. try not to exaggerate your abilities. this will only get you on the wrong boards and ultimately hurt your progression. BB: Do you consider yourself to be an artist? MR: Yeah. I think there’s a few things that make anybody an artist–creating something that other people can appreciate, people completely different from me. I can make a surfboard that can be ridden by anybody in any country, all speaking different languages, and it’s something we can all appreciate. everybody has something to offer to the world. BB: How many hours do you work a day on average? MR: When you work for yourself you are always working. I spend more time e-mailing than I do actually shaping. I probably only shape five or six hours a week. BB: who do you try to market your boards to? MR: Well, you’re always trying to expand, but you want to maintain your relationships with your local market–it’s your core. you just don’t want to be branded as the “local shaper.” this morning a local guy from Kaneohe paddled up to me and said, ‘Brah, I’ve been seeing your boards everywhere, especially here at Goat Island. You’ve got the BYU kids nailed huh?’ I ended up asking myself, ‘Wow, am I just the shaper for the BYU kids?’ For me it’s weird that I’ve had guys making finals in professional contests that were riding my boards, and still I’m thought of as the ‘BYU Shaper.’ so we’re working on that right now.” BB: How many days a week do you surf? MR: probably seven. my wife is ultra supportive. She even makes me go surf when I don’t feel like it. BB: What’s on your iPod playlist? MR: Iron and Wine, SOJA, Slightly Stoopid, Joshua James, Muse. BB: What’s your favorite food to eat when you’ve just gotten in from a surf? MR: the clam chowder from Subway and a small root beer does it for me every time. BB: where do you get inspiration for art/designs on surfboards? MR: Street art and graffiti artists. they get me motivated to get out and paint. BB: Describe your typical work day. MR: I usually wake up with the sun, put some Baby Einstein on for the baby, and get right to checking and returning emails. I make it a point to maintain contact with my customers through email and text. Most of the time people will never even talk to their shaper, but I base my business around communicating with people. Anyway, after the morning emails have been finished, Lindsay will usually send me out for a surf while the baby sleeps. Then depending on what needs to be done that day, I might go pick up and drop off blanks, shape for a few hours or pick up a finished batch of boards and prep them for delivery. On the way home I try and send out text messages to customers, updating them on the status of their order. I always try to jump in the water somewhere on my way home just to get the foam dust out of my pores. I always reserve my afternoons and evenings for family time. I love spending time with my wife and kid. BB: What was your proudest accomplishment in competitive surfing? MR: I have to say the most gratifying moment was completely owning Andy Pierce [senior in psychology from San Diego, Calif.] in Turtle Bay Masters last year. I paddled him up a creek that heat. that was pretty fun.

Doctor Who’s sonic screwdriver – coming to a DIY store near you?

December 29th, 2010

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

The futuristic multi-tool gadget that assists sci-fi character Doctor Who on his journey through the universe could become a reality for DIY enthusiasts across the world, according to engineers at Bristol University.

Only probably not in time for Christmas. Shame…

Ultrasonic engineers at the institution have joined forces with The big Bang: UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair to figure out how a real-life version of the gadget, which uses sonic technology to open locks and undo screws, could be created.

Bruce Drinkwater, Professor of Ultrasonics, is working with The big Bang team to inspire young scientists of the future.

He says the answer lies in operating ultrasonic sound waves at frequencies far beyond the realms of human hearing, they can be used to apply forces to objects.

The technology is already being trialled in modern manufacturing and ultrasonic force fields are also being developed to separate diseased cells from healthy cells in the medical field.

Professor Drinkwater and The big Bang team are now exploring whether super-powerful versions of these sound beams could bring Doctor Who’s iconic device to life.

He said “Doctor Who is renowned for bending the rules of science. but technology has radically moved on since the Doc first stepped out of his Tardis in the sixties.

“whilst a fully-functioning time machine may still be light years away, engineers are already experimenting with ultrasonic waves to move and manipulate small objects.”

Engineers are looking into how ultrasonic waves can be spun at high speed to create a twisting force similar to that of a miniature tornado, which could undo screws remotely.

They have also experimented with rotating ultrasonic force fields which would act like the head of a real screwdriver.

Professor Drinkwater hopes his work to make the impossible possible will inspire engineers, technologists and inventors of the future: “Doctor Who’s adventures have captured the imaginations of millions, young and old.

“and, however far fetched the Time Lord’s encounters may seem, there are engineers and scientists out there who are using their skills to bring the magic to life.

“The sonic screwdriver may still be sometime in the making but ultrasonic technology is already making its mark in the medical and manufacturing arenas with some exciting results.”

Taking place at ICC London ExCeL from 10 – 12 March 2011, The big Bang is also the ideal place to find out about the exciting career options available in science and engineering. it will host the finals of the prestigious National Science & Engineering Competition and also kicks off National Science & Engineering Week 2011.

Boasting 220 foot-pounds of torque, this wrench is powerful enough to handle most household tasks, from car repair to fixing leaks. Enter Black 8-Inch Auto Wrench & Decker’s battery-powered Auto Wrench, a phenomenally handy tool that opens and closes with the push of a button.

At 8-inches, you could toss it in the silverware drawer and whip it out when you need it. amp Decker This is an ideal product for someone looking to buy a wrench that’s both easy to use and versatile. the Auto Wrench Auto Wrench is not meant to replace specialty tools like pipe or torque wrenches, but the jaws open wide enough (up to 1-1/4-inch) so that it could conceivably replace a range of manual wrenches sitting in your toolkit.

The Auto Wrench Adjusting area where this wrench really shines is in hard-to-reach spots where mobility is obscured, such as under sinks. A typical situation where the Auto Wrench would help might be one in which you’re awkwardly reaching for a nut underneath the kitchen faucet. with a comparable manual Black amp wrench, it’s conceivable you would fumble around with the adjusting mechanism for minutes on end, and then toss a fit. with the Auto Wrench, you’d simply press a button (positioned where you rest your thumb) and the jaws would open or close to your specifications.

This means you’ll need to keep some extra batteries around the house – or buy some rechargeable batteries 8-Inch Auto — if you use it frequently. however, the wrench isn’t a power hog by any means. We Black amp Decker were a bit skeptical when we learned the Auto Wrench takes AA batteries and doesn’t include a rechargeable battery. Black & Decker says you can get 650 cycles out of two AA batteries, which should be plenty for most people.

Incumbent Reid expected a challenge, and GOP challenger Angle didn't disappoint

November 5th, 2010

“It felt unseemly, given that Daschle hadn’t even conceded his race yet,” Reid recalls in his book “The Good Fight.”

“But in two hours I would sit and call the members of a stunned and demoralized Democratic caucus,” which had just witnessed the GOP eliminate the minority party’s top senator. “I wasn’t entirely sure what I was going to say. We would turn this around the best we could.”

The Democrats turned things around and how. They retook the House and the Senate from Republicans in a 2006 election sweep built on disappointment with President George W. Bush. Then the Democrats stormed the White House with Barack Obama’s stunning 2008 victory.

And the whole time — from his post-2004 election calls to colleagues, from his ascension to power as the Senate majority leader, from the collapse of the economy as America’s first black president took office — Reid has prepared for what he knew would be an attempt by the GOP in 2010 to defeat him, much like the Republicans took out Daschle in a small state election with national implications.

“For the longest time, this election was all about Reid, a referendum on him,” Billy Vassiliadis, a Reid adviser, said. “No matter who he ran against, the money was going to be there” to try to beat him.

Leaving nothing to chance, Reid even helped pick his GOP opponent, Sharron Angle. He discouraged several prominent Republicans from running against him, including Rep. Dean Heller, and former Rep. Jon Porter. And then his campaign targeted and eliminated Angle’s strongest establishment foe during the primary, former state Republican Party chairwoman Sue Lowden.

But what Reid didn’t count on — and what could cost him the race Tuesday in the most closely watched contest in the nation — was Angle’s staying power: her success at raising vast sums of money, her ability to best him in their only debate, and the energy and anger behind the Tea Party movement that shot his staunch conservative challenger into the political stratosphere despite her flaws.

“It’s time to take our country back and retire Harry Reid,” Angle said at a Tea Party rally of 10,000 people in Reid’s hometown of Searchlight in March, when she was lost in a pack of a dozen Republicans vying to take him on. “It’s wonderful to have Americans fighting for freedom.”

Angle had made a dramatic entrance that day, arriving in a cloud of desert dust, wearing a black leather outfit while riding on the back of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle with Bikers for Jesus.

The race between the staid power player Reid, 70, and the populist Angle, 61, is smashing records right and left with more than $50 million spent by the candidates, outside groups and the parties.

It has the potential to elect the first female U.S. senator from Nevada, or retain the most powerful lawmaker in state history, whose popularity has dropped. It’s also the premiere national test of whether a Tea Party-backed insurgent can defeat an entrenched Democratic incumbent in a year independents upset with Obama, the economy and the growing government spending and debt are swinging the GOP’s way.

“Her strategy is working. Angle seems to know her base,” said David Damore, political science professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. “She never went and kissed the ring of establishment Republicans. She doesn’t look like a sell-out. Her donor base has grown. If you’re thinking what happens next, win or lose, she’s in the inevitable position of being able to dictate politics in this state for a while.

“In the end, I bet Reid wishes he had run against Lowden,” Damore added. “She had no base and was a lightweight on the issues. He would have torn her up. … Be careful what you wish for.”

What Reid and the Democrats wished for most, however, was an economic recovery that would have saved their skins by Election Day. Instead, the $787 billion stimulus bill, the unpopular health care law, and banking and auto industry bailouts only slowed the slide and did not lift the nation.

And in Nevada, the economic situation grew worse, hitting new records nearly every month, especially in Southern Nevada where “For Sale” signs and Sunday yard sales became the norm.

As a result, the Senate race is playing out at the epicenter of the country’s economic crisis with Nevada suffering the highest unemployment rate, at 14.4 percent, and the worst home foreclosure and bankruptcy rates in the nation, a gut punch to the one-time fastest growing state of 2.8 million people.

“I don’t think there’s been anything comparable economically in my lifetime,” said Sig Rogich, a businessman and leading GOP adviser to White House candidates and state politicians.

With the economic collapse, Rogich saw that his and Nevada’s longtime benefactor Reid could lose his influential job — and with it, the ability to steer millions of federal dollars to the state and protect its lifeblood gaming and mining industries that have helped keep Reid in office.

And thus “Republicans for Reid” was born in the fall of 2009, a who’s who list of establishment, industry and civic leaders who threw their support behind Reid even before he had a GOP opponent.

MGM Resorts International CEO Jim Murren was among its first members. He also appeared in two TV campaign ads for Reid, praising the senator for calling bankers last year to press for continued financing of the $8.5 billion CityCenter complex that opened on the Strip with 8,000 workers.

MGM is the top corporate donor to Reid, who has locked up nearly all of the casino contributors in the state. Most recently, the company gave $300,000 to a political action committee to support Reid; the Patriot Majority PAC, headed by former Reid staffer Craig Varoga, is running ads against Angle.

Rogich, who leads Republicans for Reid, said those on the 400-member list have set aside their ideologies and differences with the Democrat to protect a valuable political asset in Washington.

“The only leverage we have is Harry Reid,” Rogich said. “To lose him at the table would be catastrophic. I don’t think Sharron Angle provides any comfort for the people in Nevada.”

Angle, a free-market proponent, has a ready answer for the charge that a freshman senator wouldn’t have the pull Reid has. She has argued that lawmakers shouldn’t pick which companies and industries should be rescued at taxpayer expense but let competition decide which ones fail or succeed.

“Harry Reid has done enough,” Angle often says on the campaign trail and in some of her earlier TV ads, arguing that he and the Democrats have used their power in ways that didn’t help the economy or create jobs the same way that fewer taxes and less federal regulation of business would have.

Reid blames President George W. Bush for the recession and argues that if not for his and the Democrats’ actions there would have been another Great Depression. He says the stimulus saved or created 34,000 Nevada jobs, although 200,000 remain unemployed in the state.

“People have been hurting. I understand that,” Reid told MSNBC in late October, acknowledging voter anger at him. “And it doesn’t give them comfort or solace for me to tell them, ‘You know, but for me we’d be in a worldwide depression.’ They want to know what I have done for them.”

In the first stage of Reid’s campaign, he tried to tell that to voters, who seemed unmoved.

“From Vegas to Reno, Carson City to Elko, he’s helped build roads, hospitals and schools,” said one ad in the fall, promoting Reid’s ability to bring hundreds of millions of federal dollars to Nevada.

Reid spent $2 million on the spots. Yet his unpopularity grew, with more than 50 percent of Nevadans saying they had an unfavorable opinion of the moderate Democrat pushing what critics call Obama’s liberal, big-government agenda, one that doesn’t sit well in libertarian Nevada.

“That was a clear signal, even before the race had really begun, that he was going to be in trouble,” said Ryan Erwin, a GOP consultant and former state party leader in Nevada and California. “They blew a lot of money, and those ads had no impact whatsoever.”

So the Reid campaign decided it would “vaporize” his GOP opponent, according to an anonymous aide quoted in Politico as the four-term senator appeared to be a dead incumbent walking.

“They had no hope of raising their boat. They had to sink the other boat,” Erwin said.

And the Reid campaign did. It mercilessly attacked former Nevada GOP chairwoman Lowden, a telegenic former beauty queen and casino executive with access to money and GOP establishment players. Targeted by Reid, Lowden went from GOP front-runner to late-night talk show joke for suggesting people could barter with doctors for health care, as in the olden days, with chickens.

“Harry is a vicious guy, and he’s not going to give up in a hurry,” said Barbara Vucanovich, a GOP icon and former Nevada congresswoman first elected to the House in 1982 along with Reid. “He uses everything he can possibly think of to win. He’s trying to make Sharron out as if she’s nuts.”

Angle, meantime, got a much-needed boost when the Tea Party Express endorsed her on Tax Day, April 15, and began putting $1 million behind her campaign along with the Club for Growth.

A gun-rights advocate and Southern Baptist, Angle surprised some of the button-down capital press corps at the endorsement news conference when she introduced herself.

“You know, I feel a little lonely today. I usually bring Smith and Wesson along, and I have to tell you, I’m going to give Washington, D.C., a lesson in the Constitution, especially the Second Amendment,” Angle said when she was still playing to more conservative primary voters. “But I didn’t come alone today. I brought God — always bring him — and I brought my husband of 40 years, Ted Angle.”

Immediately after Angle’s surprise GOP primary victory on June 8, the Reid campaign pounced, pinning her to the pavement with negative ads and attacks portraying the former Reno assemblywoman as too extreme and even dangerous. Her negatives went up with voters, and her poll numbers went down, and it appeared Reid might succeed in defining her as unelectable.

To take her down, Reid operatives relied on interviews Angle gave on conservative radio and TV and on leaked audio and videotapes of private meetings with supporters where she talked about her views, including that Democrats had made “government our God” by expanding social programs.

Angle also warned that voters might use their “Second Amendment remedies” to take back government, although she later clarified that she didn’t mean armed revolution but political revolution. She started ducking mainstream reporters to avoid uncomfortable questions about her comments.

On policy, the Reid campaign warned that Angle planned to “kill” Social Security because she advocated “phasing out” the system that’s slowly going bankrupt in favor of privatization. Under fire, Angle modified her stance and said seniors and others who paid into the system should receive all their benefits, while newer workers should be allowed to opt out and open personal retirement accounts.

Reid maintained the upper hand during the long summer as Angle struggled to expand her Reno living room-based campaign shop into a professional operation capable of battling back.

Angle’s comeback came in the fall, typical of her late-surge style in previous campaigns in which the veteran door-to-door precinct walker nearly took out stronger competitors. In 2006, Angle almost knocked off Heller in the GOP primary, and two years later, she nearly beat Reno Sen. Bill Raggio, the longest-serving state lawmaker in Nevada history who returned the favor by backing Reid now.

Collecting millions of dollars online and by traveling the country to headline fundraisers, Angle raised an astonishing $14.3 million in the last full quarter ending Sept. 30 compared with $2.8 million for Reid. They both had about $4 million cash on hand at the time, although both were spending it fast on endless negative TV ads with Angle blaming Reid for the economy while he called her extreme.

“It’s kind of been a classic brawl,” UNLV communications professor Joseph Valenzano said. “They both made a lot of gaffes and statements that have cost them.”

A major turning point came on Oct. 14 in their only live, televised debate.

Nervous at first, Angle came off the stronger of the pair during the one-hour event, telling Reid at one point to “man up” and admit that the Social Security system needed fixing.

Reid called it a low-blow, but appeared weak and meandering at times, ending the debate by shuffling papers on the podium as he struggled to find his pre-written closing statement.

“Sharron Angle shocked many people during the debate who may have thought of her as a novice because she’s challenging the consummate career politician,” said Robert Uithoven who managed Lowden’s campaign. “Truth is, Sharron has been in many more debates and campaigns than Harry Reid over the past several election cycles. She proved her capabilities.”

Angle has been running for election every two years since 1998, the last time Reid had a difficult race.

The last weeks of the campaign have proven the nastiest, with Reid portraying Angle as out of the mainstream and Angle painting Reid as out of touch, living at the Ritz-Carlton while people suffer.

Angle began running anti-illegal immigration ads showing scary looking Hispanics trying to cross the border. And she told a Hispanic high school class that some of them looked Asian, a bungled attempt to speak about multiculturalism. One endgame Reid ad showed Angle running from reporters’ questions.

Reid used the ads and her school gaffe to help him fire up Hispanics, who make up 12 percent of the Nevada electorate and could make the difference between him winning and losing on Tuesday .

“People are afraid of her. She would be an embarrassment to the state of Nevada,” said Reid, sitting at the Gritz Cafe at a Las Vegas event for African-Americans, another Democratic voting bloc.

Heading into Election Day, the polls showed Angle leading Reid, 49 percent to 45 percent, within the 4-point margin of error, in the latest Mason-Dixon Polling & Research survey for the Las Vegas Review-Journal and 8NewsNow.

And both candidates were pulling out all the stops to get their voters to the polls, with Reid putting his faith in his Democratic Party backers such as the unions and minorities to swamp ballot boxes, although independent voters swinging Angle’s way could decide the outcome.

A string of big name supporters came to Nevada to help Reid, from Obama three times this year, to first lady Michelle Obama, who’s coming on Monday for the second time to help him.

Angle, meanwhile, also drew GOP stars to Nevada, from Tea Party favorite Sarah Palin, to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich to U.S. Sen. John McCain, the Arizona maverick with moderate appeal.

At the Gingrich gathering in Las Vegas, Angle’s little-known campaign manager Terry Campbell stood with his arms crossed, watching the architect of the 1994 GOP takeover of Congress talk up Angle as the right candidate at the right time to replace Reid. Campbell smiled.

“Harry Reid’s Democratic machine has some cracks,” Campbell said. “It’s time for a change.”

At the end of “The Good Fight,” Reid added an epilogue after Obama’s victory. He predicted the new president would undo the damage of the Bush years, heal divisions between the two parties and seek “new solutions beyond the intractable left-right, Republican-Democrat matrix.”

“If we do not govern differently, we will have taken no good lesson from the bad experience of the Bush years,” Reid wrote. “If we do not govern differently, then we do not deserve to govern.”

On Tuesday, the voters will decide.

The Crosby & Ovechkin debate rages in fantasy pools, as well. (AP Photo)

October 20th, 2010

Forwards, defencemen and goaltenders are grouped onto one draft cheat sheet with our annual Top 100 list; designed to give you the building blocks for a championship-calibre fantasy roster right out of the gate. Combine them with our goalie primer, goalie rankings and sleepers to create a dynamo in your league. Yesterday’s draft guide also had trading tips, poolie etiquette, and what it takes to win.

Criteria: Plenty of great players didn’t make this list. These rankings aren’t about making sure all 30 teams are represented and Canadians (players or teams) didn’t get special preference. It’s all about the projected stats. Nothing more. Nothing less.

The Top 100 is for ’10-11 single-season standard fantasy leagues counting goals, assists, +/-, penalty minutes, power play points and shots on goal – all weighted equally – for forwards and defencemen; with wins, goals against, save percentage and shutouts – all weighted equally – for goaltenders.

Standard league philosophy: Power forwards and offensive defencemen with strong peripherals carry significant value in these sorts of leagues, which is why you may see someone projected to score 15 more points ranked behind someone who cranks out plenty of PIM and/or SOG.

Goalie note: Some individual goaltenders may have a slightly different order than we saw in Tuesday’s tandem netminder rankings, based solely on the projected number of starts for each man. Also note that while runs on goalies will normally happen earlier than you’ll see them listed here overall (which is why we rank goaltending separately in addition to today’s offering), the Top 100 attempts to gauge just how much any one player is worth compared with another with these scoring categories.

Bonus info: We’ve also kicked it up a notch this year. Included with players in the Top 100, dependent upon position played: age to start the season; Cap hit; Contract expiration year and ensuing UFA, RFA status/ Last year’s stats for quick reference/ Projected line; Potential linemates; Expected PP role/ “Tweet this”: giving a 140 character limit for additional info.

Line combos: Short. Simple. Projected lines referenced here are nothing more than guesses based on last season and what’s transpired so far in training camp and the preseason. You can find every line combo and defensive pairing from all 30 teams in-season every single evening with our live blogging.

If you see “L1/1A”, it means the team basically has what can be considered two equally effective first lines (Crosby, Malkin, etc). If you see “alphabet soup” instead of two projected linemates, it means there are too many possibilities still in play there. RW-C-LW eligibility varies by league.
