PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. (WPIX) – Some 100 dogs facing a life of cruel and inhumane treatment at Midwest puppy mills are getting a new lease on life.
The National Mill Dog Rescue and North Shore Animal League have teamed up to bring the various breeds of all ages to the national adoption headquarters.
The suffering pooches were rescued from mills in Oklahoma and Missouri and brought to Precious Friends in Clarksville, Tennessee for medical evaluations, according to NSAL.
The breeds of canines include Chihuahuas, Dachshunds, Cocker Spaniels, Pugs, Bichon Frises, Japanese Chins and King Charles Spaniels.
Once at North Shore Animal League all the dogs, young and old, will be checked medically, behaviorally and socially. The dogs will also be spayed or neutered before adoption.
The pet overpopulation problem is a result of overcrowded commercial breeding operations that supply pet stores across the United States, according to NSAL. Most of the dogs that do not produce face being sold at mill dog auctions for as little as 25 cents or face being killed.
