The chest thumping at the NATO Lisbon conference (November 19-20) did not impress the Taliban much. Instead, they were chuckling at how easily the Americans can be duped into believing they are negotiating with the Taliban. any goat-herder, or shopkeeper, can pass for a Talib. with their flowing beards and baggy trousers, it is difficult to tell one Afghan from another. It would be easier to tell a Dalmatian by its spots. but the manner in which an Afghan shopkeeper bilked the Americans out of millions of dollars while claiming to be Mulla Akhtar Muhammad Mansour, a senior Taliban leader, is hilarious. It also shows how desperate the Americans, especially their top commander General David Petraeus, are to negotiate with the Taliban to secure an “honorable” exit from the Afghan quagmire. For months they claimed senior Taliban leaders were meeting them to negotiate a peace deal. this so-called Mulla Mansour was even flown on a NATO plane to Kabul.

How could the Americans be fooled so easily? Fingers are being pointed at the British for arranging the meetings. the British in turn are saying it is not their responsibility; they merely arranged transportation; it was the Afghans who should have identified the mulla. the blame game continues with plenty of red faces, especially in Washington. General Petraeus is not as smart as he thinks.

In Lisbon meanwhile, NATO leaders pushed back their troop withdrawal date to 2014 from 2011 with the proviso that enough Afghan troops would be ready to take over security duties. even the two-bit player Canada said its troops would remain in Afghanistan for another three years, albeit for training purposes, despite Prime Minister Stephen Harper vowing that 2011 was a firm withdrawal date. Harper exposed his dictatorial streak when he said he did not need parliament’s approval. the liberal opposition, even more eager to please the Americans, did not object.

At the Lisbon summit, US President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron and other NATO leaders talked of “progress” and “successes” that will enable the gradual withdrawal of troops to begin next year (as promised by Obama in his December 1, 2009 West Point speech), but this is based on dubious assumptions. the withdrawal talk is aimed at placating irate publics at home that want an end to the futile and costly war. but the generals are keen to continue because that is how they can justify the massive military spending at a time when millions are unemployed and face a grim future. British army chief General Sir David Richards went so far as to say the war could go on for decades.

The tough talk at Lisbon’s NATO summit must be weighed against the grim reality of Western economies. the US economy in particular is in a tailspin, despite optimistic noises about improvement in employment figures. many economists are predicting the US faces bankruptcy by next April.

Washington is caught between two contradictory dilemmas. It wants to stay in Afghanistan to suck Central Asian oil and gas as well as the multi-billion dollar mineral resources of Afghanistan but it faces a tough opponent in the Taliban that are becoming even more organized. the US and its NATO allies face certain defeat if they stay too long. already, NATO has been strained to the limit and the Afghan fiasco may prove its undoing. but it is the US that is stuck on the horns of a dilemma, its superpower pretensions rubbed in the dust.

American generals no longer talk about defeating the Taliban, only not to lose the war hence their desperate attempts to find some Taliban to talk to. the Taliban see no reason to do so. the Americans are banking on the Pakistan army to bail them out by fighting their war in Afghanistan. the Pakistanis are reluctant because they do not want to create an enemy on their western borders when they face a cunning and ruthless enemy, India backed by the US, on the eastern front. besides, the Afghan Taliban are not Pakistan’s enemies. Instead, many Pakistani volunteers fighting alongside the Taliban will help their Kashmiri brethren once the war in Afghanistan is over.

If the US wants Pakistan’s help, then it has to help solve the long-festering problem of Kashmir. It cannot demand Pakistan’s help against the Taliban while backing Indian militarism. the road out of America’s Afghan dilemma may well have to wind its way through the curfewed streets of Srinagar in Kashmir.

Bolshoi, the Boxer, Believes It Paes To Be Leander’s Muse (Satire)

Leander Paes: Moving on to the big screen. Gary M. Prior/Getty Images

SATIRE — (First published on http://maketimeforsports.com)

Bolshoi, my pet Boxer, wishes to act in a Hollywood picture.

“I have decided that I will become a film star. I want to win an Oscar for the country.”

“Sure. And pigs will fly.” I reply.

“I am serious. If Leander Paes can dream of securing an Academy Award in his second avatar, I can make it happen as well.” Bolshoi glares at me.

“Leander Paes is a sports celebrity. he has a huge advantage over you. besides, his wife Rhea Pillai has filmi connections and he’s had acting classes before deciding to make the transition. He’s also good-looking.” I try to pour some cold water.

“I’ve had histrionics lessons as well. my friend, Botox, the Pekingese, has been assisting me in the nuances of facing the camera. She is a very gifted artiste and has won several prizes in dog shows. She is well-versed in the art of cosmetics.”

Bolshoi shows me his left cheek, duly rouged.

“You’ll need more than acting classes to make it to the big screen. Bollywood would be a better bet, but you have learn to shake a leg and lip-sync.” by now my curiosity is piqued.

“Are you not listening to me? I’ve been training for two hours daily under Botox’s gimlet eye. I have mastered the moves to ‘Sheela Ki Jawani’ and am now working on ‘Chaiya, Chaiya.’”

Sheela Ki Jawani

Bolshoi twirls and prances to an imaginary beat.

“I don’t know why you keep drawing inspiration from these pumped-up prima donnas. they live action-packed lives and need some more when they retire. you are just an old dog and should retire to your kennel.”

I turn away.

“I am as young as I feel. besides, Vijay Amritraj, too, starred in a Bond movie, Octopussy. Look at his brother Anand, producing all those Van Damme movies. I could make it huge as well.”

“you are unduly encouraged by your girlfriend, Botox. I don’t quite approve of her, you know.” Botox is not my favourite four-legged person.

“you are such a spoil sport. Don’t you think that I score over the Kolkattan when it comes to crossing over to the West? At least, I will not be relegated to bit roles playing a terrorist or a Hispanic love interest. I can be as big a star as Lassie. Or the 101 Dalmatians.” Bolshoi loves to dream big.

“Bolshoi, you can try. But I am not accompanying you on any shoots.”

“Don’t you worry about that. Botox has volunteered to be my secretary. She will take care of my travelling and scheduling needs. She has everything chalked out.” Bolshoi moves towards the door.

“where are you going now?” I growl.

“Amisha Patel has opted out of Leander’s film, Rajdhani Express. Botox and I have  approached her to make her next movie with us.”

Bloating in Dogs is a Condition That is Fast Becoming One of the …

April 12th, 2010

Your dog can come inside to eat his dinner, go out and start to play, and the next thing you know he is gasping for air, going into shock, and before you know what has even happened, he has died.

We are very fortunate in that we identified Bloating very early in one of our previous Dalmatians, but even with all the safe guards that we take with our current Dalmatian, he still gets mild forms of Bloating where he simply throws up, thank goodness, which prevents it from getting to the serious stage.

So what exactly is Bloating, what are the causes, the symptoms, and what can you do to help prevent this life threatening condition in your canine friend.

Bloating in dogs is the building up of excessive gas, as well as fluid and foam in your dog’s stomach. It is referred to as dilation when the valve at the bottom of the stomach becomes blocked which prevent gas as well as other materials that our produced by your pets stomach to exit. It can occur on its own, or it can be the precursor to torsion.

It will typically occur when your dogs has eaten a large meal very rapidly and is generally following by drinking a lot of water. In most cases of life threatening forms of Bloating, this is followed by a lot of activity or exercise in the yard, walking, or running; all within the first few hours after eating.

What happens is that your dog’s stomach may start the process called torsion. This means that their stomach is basically rotating or flipping over, which causes abnormal twisting of the intestines. This condition is also referred to as GDV, Gastric Dilatation Volvulus, or twisted stomach.

Once this rotation has started, the blood supply is cut off and the stomach begins to die. When this occurs, your dog’s entire blood supply is disrupted and conditions in your pet from there on will deteriorate rapidly.

Not all dogs will face this serious of a gas buildup resulting in this chain of events, but in any dog that has volvulus develop, it is the result of dilation within their stomach. As owners, understanding the signs will be critical to saving there lives because at this stage prompt medical treatment is required.

Large breed dogs and large chest dogs are by far and away the most prone to this condition as are dog over 7 years of age. Male dogs are also at a much higher risk than females.

The temperament of dogs also seems to be a factor especially if they are nervous, anxious, or are frightened easily. However, the exact cause of the condition is still not fully understood as it seems to be a series of events that happens to these larger breeds.

Most of the theories are that it starts with swallowing air, as all dogs do as well as humans; but normally when this happens, we can usually burp or belch and release the air. Failure to release air or gas at this point seems to trigger the reactions in your dog.

The symptoms to watch for in your pet will be an inability to vomit, meaning that your pet is trying but nothing is coming up which than leads to the next symptom, which is an apparent stress in your pet.

Other symptoms to watch for will be a sudden restlessness, excessive salvation and or drooling, panting, a sudden pacing by your pet, and a kicking or scratching of their abdomen. It is hurting them, and in some cases, killing them.

If you see these symptoms, check there stomach quickly to see if it is swollen or feels distended in any way at all. It if is swollen and is very hard, these are all signs that you need to react very quickly to as your dog may be dying right in front of your eyes if severe enough.

But if they can vomit and even belch, than take a breath, as it may not be GDV.

Preventative Measures:

Try to keep your dog from stressful situations as this seems to be a major cause or the starting point especially if your dog is fearful and anxious. Our Dalmatian gets stressed very easily, and this is something we have learned to watch for.

Contrary to all of the advice about how much better elevated food stands and drinking stands are, they are wrong in this advice as this places your pet at a much greater risk at swallowing air as they are eating. Do not exercise your dog within an hour after eating, it is just like our mothers used to tell us about swimming after eating, it is the same type of stress for your dog.

Do not permit rapid eating and do not feed them just once or twice. Try to feed them more often if possible. Always keep some type of digestive aid that helps gas on hand such as Mylanta Gas or some like product for gas.

Fresh water should always be available, but should be limited even if you have to pick it up right before or after meals. Your dog will naturally want to drink too much water; regulate what they drink.

There are several things you should do with their diet, but nothing will be more important than treating your large dog, especially if male and older, with several preemptive measures.

The first will be with frequent forms of digestive and dietary enzymes. Enzymes are organic catalysts for your dogs. They either speed up or initiate chemical reactions in there bodies that will help them in all digestive functions as well as tissue repair and energy production. These enzymes can come from the food you feed them or from a digestive enzyme aid.

A lot of enzymes are lost in the production of foods, so you will need to look specifically for and in most cases supplement; Protease, which helps with breaking proteins into amino acids; Amylase, which helps in reducing carbohydrates; Lipase, which helps in digesting fats; and Cellulose, which breakdowns fiber.

There are also supplements that you should consider giving your big, lovable friend. Vitamins A, C and E are all important antioxidants in several functions for your dog. However, the minerals selenium and zinc must be considered essential as these minerals help spark your dog’s bodies and electrical impulse actions, both critical functions for digestion.

But there is one other mineral that is very often overlooked and is also critical for preventing Bloatinging in dogs, and that is sulfur. Your can get sulfur MSM or DMSO supplements from your veterinarian of pet supply store, but you must use sulfur with this condition.

Sulfur is found most abundantly in raw meat, but who feeds raw meat to there dog anymore? Sulfur has the same toxicity as water, is instrumental in electrical impulse and assists in body chemistry and balance. Dogs lived very normal lives for years on raw meat, and where does your dog turn to first when they have a belly ache?

They eat grass and alfalfa, which has extremely high levels of sulfur. Most all sulfur has been taken out of commercial food, but if you do any one thing in helping your large breed of dog, give them sulfur.

We have given our Dalmatian sulfur supplements for over ten years now, and he is a very healthy fifteen year old that every time we take him to the veterinarian she just shakes her head; as he looks like he is about five to six years old.

Bloating in dogs is a deadly condition, but it can be prevented, as we work to prevent it everyday in our big lovable older dog.
