Agriculture fans ought to be looking forward to John Deere Day in Dutton which will be held at Village Crier Gallery & Frame Shop,194 Currie Road, Dutton, on Father’s Day, June 20 from 1pm – 4pm.
Jenny Phillips, owner of the frame shop, is also the feature artist for the 2010 International Plowing Match. John Deere Day will have antique tractors parked along Main Street, Dutton, for viewing, and they will have a restored 1960 “3010 New Generation John Deere” tractor which will be raffled off by the 2010 IPM Committee, parked out in front of the shop from noon until shortly after 4pm.
Ticket sales will benefit the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Foundation.
“One fellow is bringing his John Deere toy collection, and he’s also bringing an antique John Deere dump wagon that he bought in Illinois. There will be some interesting pieces there,” said Phillips.
Phillips was commissioned last year by the IPM Committee, and the finished image can be seen on all the IPM posters and promotional literature this year.
“My family has a long history of involvement in the plowing match. Even though I grew up in Waterloo County, someone from my family has been actively involved in each IPM held in Elgin,” said Phillips. “In 1940, my grandfather, my uncle and my dad brought their horses down and participated in the first international match held out at the Ontario Hospital grounds. My grandfather and dad won a prize.”
The International Plowing Match will be September 21-25 on lands adjacent to the St. Thomas Municipal Airport, with over 500 exhibitors and vendors.
