New Nomura wholesale CEO Jesse Bhattal rings the changes

March 13th, 2011

Savoret spent 11 years at Lehman Brothers before resigning in early September 2008, just weeks before the bank collapsed.

He joined Nomura today as joint head of global equities alongside New York-based Naoki Matsuba. Savoret replaces Rachid Bouzouba, who was promoted from head of European equities to the global role one year ago today.

Bouzouba is weighing alternative roles within Nomura, according to a memo sent to staff today by Takumi Shibata, chairman of the wholesale unit, and Bhattal, who was yesterday named chief executive of the unit, effective on April 1.

In January, Savoret quietly re-emerged at Infinity Capital Markets, the European business of US proprietary trading firm First New York Securities, according to his Bloomberg profile. Infinity declined to comment on his role at the time, and could not immediately be reached for comment today.

His arrival at Nomura is one of four senior changes that Bhattal said are a “critical next step” in the bank’s plans to develop its wholesale business.

Savoret returns almost exactly a year after re-emerging into the financial markets spotlight as chief executive of Australian bank Macquarie’s business in Europe, the Middle East and Africa in March last year – only to quit the role a month later.

His previous Lehman roles include a stint as chief operating officer of the Emea business. At Nomura he will report to Tarun Jotwani.

Jotwani was today promoted to head of global markets after his role running fixed income was expanded to include oversight of the equities side in the latest changes instigated by Bhattal. In the new role, Jotwani will oversee strategy, and target growth for the global markets business.

Lehman Brothers collapsed in mid-September 2008, and the bank’s European and Asian operations were taken over by Nomura later that month, while Barclays took over the bulk of its US operations.

Punchline Magazine Blog » Stand-up comedian becomes mayor of Iceland’s capital city – Comedy Blog, Comedy News, and all things in Stand Up Comedy.

December 9th, 2010

In Iceland an odd turn of events occurred boarding on the zaniness of Arnold Schwarzenegger being elected a governor. Comedian Jon Gnarr Kristinsson started his own political party, The Best Party, ran for mayor of the nation’s capital, Reykjavik and then… he won! The party started last November as a satirical commentary on political incompetence, but the parody soon grew into a serious political movement.

Citizens were discontent with elected officials after Iceland fell into a banking crisis in 2008 due to the negligence of the politicians. angry voters were drawn into the satirical approach of The Best Party – which promised free towels in swimming pools and a polar bear for the city zoo – and voted to have six of 15 seats on the council filled by party members.

Iceland’s prime minister acknowledged that these local elections were a vote of no confidence in the political establishment of the country. Kristinsson, the man at the helm of the party told the Financial Times, “I love this city very much so I really want to do a good job. I will keep my humor and use it to my advantage. it is my aim to be International Mayor of the Year for 2012.”

The Best Party also produced a video for their campaign replacing the lyric’s to Tina Turner’s “Simply The Best” with their own comedically and politically-minded ones. Check it out!

Oh Flag Betty, Bam A Lam « The Flag Press

December 2nd, 2010

Betsy Ross is widely credited with being the creator of the first American flag. Despite much debate over this fact, one thing is true, Betsy Ross is one of the most prominent faces in both American and flag history.

Elizabeth Griscom was born on January 1, 1752 in Philadelphia, PA; the 8th of 17 children. she was born into a strict Quaker environment where she learned to sew early in her life from her great-aunt Elizabeth Griscom. after becoming an upholstery apprentice following Quaker schooling, she soon fell in love and married her coworker John Ross. Because Ross was an Episcopal Christian, the Quaker community quickly separated itself from Elizabeth. Betsy and John soon joined Christ Church of Philadelphia where George Washington attended. As you can guess, this is important for the rest of the story.

Betsy and John soon opened up their own upholstery business to start their lives together. When the Revolutionary war began in 1775, John joined the militia, leaving Betsy to remain with their upholstery business. John would eventually be killed in January, 1776 by a gunpowder explosion, leaving Betsy widowed at the young age of 24. Betsy continued to run the upholstery shop…

According to Betsy, George Washington (leader of the Continental Army), Robert Morris (one of the wealthiest men in the US) and Colonel George Ross (uncle of John) approached Betsy about making the first American flag. at that point, she had known Washington from church and had often sewn for him and Martha. Washington had apparently wanted a 6 point star, but after showing how to cut a 5-point star with one swipe of the scissors, they were convinced that she was the right person for the job. she created a 13 star design in a circle. The 13 stars represented the original 13 colonies and is still used in many American flag designs today.

As the Revolutionary War continued, a new flag was needed for the American colonies. up until this time, most colonies were using flags inspired by great Britain, such as the Grand Union flag. This is where most of the story gets tricky. The reason most people believe that Betsy Ross created the first American flag is because of a letter that William Canby, Betsy’s grandson, sent to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in 1870, 34 years following her death and a full 96 years following the actual creation of the flag. in this paper, Canby recounts a story that his Aunt had told him regarding the creation by Betsy. however, many of the stories and accounts in this paper have been unable to be verified; however, by most Americans, the story has been accepted as truth and she is generally regarded with the first American flag creation. Will we really ever know if Betsy Ross was responsible for creating the first official American flag? Sadly, probably not.

Getting back to the story! Following the death of John, she returned to her Quaker roots. she would then get remarried to a mariner by the name of Joseph Ashburm. With Joseph, Betsy became pregnant with two daughters, one of which miscarried. a British ship captured Joseph and returned him to a prison in England where he died of unknown reasons without ever meeting his daughter.

She eventually married again to a man named John Claypoole and had 5 more daughters, all the while still running the upholstery shop. John passed away in 1817 after 34 years of marriage. Betsy never remarried and eventually moved in with one of her daughters in Philadelphia following her retirement. she passed away in 1836 and was buried in a Quaker burial site in Philadelphia, PA.

SDL debuts BeGlobal cloud-based translator

October 27th, 2010

Viswanathan added that BeGlobal uses a REST API so that it does not displaceexisting infrastructure when deployed.

The software aims to offer a customisable quality of service, like analyticsand reporting, differing from Google Translate, which embeds the technology inits own applications.

The Touchpoint user interface in BeGlobal allows users to create aconfigurable set of translation options. Users can select the required languageand destination, and tweak translation settings.

SDL could not supply estimates on potential cost savings, but claimed thatoperational expenditure can be greatly reduced because customers do not have torun offices with human translators.

However, Lancaster acknowledged that BeGlobal cannot rubber stamp allchannels of communication between a business and its customers, and that somesituations needed human interaction.

BeGlobal is offered as a subscription service from Tuesday.

Making rubber stamp uplifts Anderson

October 5th, 2010

He is among very few Malawians who are making their ends meet through their creativity.Anderson Banda, originally from Tcheza Village, Traditional Authority Makwangwala, Ntcheu in central Malawi is a proud rubber stamp maker whose life has been simplified and elevated.

Married with two children, Banda, who is fondly known as Andy Black among his customers, ever dreamed that one day he will steer a successful business in town

“After completing my secondary education at Nsipe Community Day Secondary School in Ntcheu in 1995, what I was yearning in the aftermath was business and nothing else,” says Banda who adds that lack of capital slowed his progress.

He says in 1997, he was employed by Kandodo Supermarket where he stopped working in 2001 after the closure of the company.

Banda says when he stopped working, he approached a friend who taught him how to produce rubber stamps in 2003.

“Since then, I have been surviving on making these rubber stamps which I sell out at K5 500 [about $36] each with sometimes getting more than that,” he says.

His main raw materials in the production of rubber stamps are date stamps and ink pads he buys from stationery shops.

Banda boasts that he has managed to venture into another business of supplying testing kits in big laboratories in the capital city.

“I pay rentals, feed my family, pay for my utilities and also I have managed to install digital satellite television (DStv) at my home out of the very same business,” he says.

Asked on challenges facing his business, Banda said the erratic business atmosphere and lack of permanent business premises are some of the impediments to his business growth.

On his growth plan, he says his dream is to own a rubber stamp company that would use machines.
