Hudson Bend students travel to Greece : Lake Travis View
For some, Spring Break conjures up images of water, sand, or even snow.
However, for seven students and two teacher-chaperones from Hudson Bend Middle School (HBMS), Spring Break 2010 was anything but typical as the group visited the temples of Zeus and other historic sites during a trip to Greece March 12-20.
Travelling with Explorica, a leader in international student travel, the group explored Athena and the Parthenon, the site of the Oracle of Delphi, and enjoyed a day cruise to the Greek island Hydra.
“Our students are the local, national, and world leaders of the future,” said Dana Browning, HBMS 7th grade English teacher and trip chaperone. “Giving them the opportunity to experience world history and culture today will help shape them into who they will be tomorrow. I am a strong believer in a hands-on teaching pedagogy, and what better way to teach about Greek Mythology than to take them (students) to Greece?”
The excursion was part of the school’s Exploring Humanities Club whose mission is to expose students to a variety of cultures, languages, and history, and to analyze their impact on modern social issues. Each year, students focus on a different theme. The students meet monthly, and take the National Mythology Exam in February.
Ruth Carter, HBMS 7th Grade English teacher and trip chaperone adds, “Next year, classical Shakespeare will be our focus. We are taking the kids to London’s Globe Theater. They will spend the day in an interactive workshop with vendors hawking sandwiches, people cheering, and heckling the players. In Elizabethan England, the Globe Theatre was a lively place, and the 1990’s reconstruction strives to be as authentic as possible. We’ll break down the false belief that ‘Shakespeare equals stuffy.’ We’ll also have side trips to Shakespeare’s birthplace, Stonehenge, and the Louvre in Paris.”
