Times-Standard changes cause stir: Daily print delivery to Garberville ends Aug. 31

August 29th, 2011

Recent changes to the North Coast’s only daily newspaper has prompted ire from some readers.

The Times-Standard announced its online subscriptions on Aug. 15, following an early August notice to Garberville area subscribers that it is discontinuing daily delivery service to the area as of Aug. 31.

Dee Way, the executive director of the Garberville Redway Area Chamber of Commerce, said the board met about the matter shortly after the delivery announcement and the overall feedback was “disappointment.”

”Of course they’re concerned because it’s our source of daily county news, and actually quite a few of my board members are subscribers,” Way said.

Garberville customers’ options now include a Sunday subscription, subscription to the newspaper’s e-edition, or an online subscription. Times-Standard publisher Dave Kuta said the newspaper is also offering a postal delivery option for daily papers, which means subscribers would get the newspaper with their mail.

Kuta said the decision was made after analysis of all service areas. the newspaper contracts with carriers to deliver the papers, and those who deliver in the Garberville area charge more due to the rural nature of the routes.

”We’re in the business to sell newspapers — when you decide not to sell in an area, it becomes a difficult decision,” Kuta said.

The newspaper was delivering about 550 newspapers to the area in home delivery and single sale copies, according to circulation numbers from June 1.

Within the first week of the delivery announcement, the company fielded about 25 complaints about the decision. While some customers were understanding about the rising costs of gas prices affecting the decision, others felt it was unfair. some residents said they would have paid more, given the option. many had stories about how the print edition is integral to their daily routine.

Way said some of the sentiment may be tied to a lack of reliable Internet access in rural Southern Humboldt, but she thinks the main concern is preference.

”some people just like to read it in print; there are things in the print addition that aren’t accessible online,” Way said.

Southern Humboldt subscriber Diane Martin-Kelly said she had been thinking about going to a Sunday only service for financial reasons but finds having the choice made for her unsettling. She said she thinks this will greatly affect her neighbors who routinely read the print edition.

”It feels very new age in that so many papers are online and that’s how they want their delivery system, but on the other hand, we are being forced to do that,” she said, adding that she has Internet but prefers the print edition.

Martin-Kelly wonders why Willow Creek, which is about the same distance as the Garberville area, can continue to receive daily delivery.

”It does kind of tick me off if they’re not doing the same thing in Willow Creek,” she said. “is this another case of the poor stepchild of Southern

Humboldt?”

Kuta said the Garberville area operation was just not cost-effective. the Willow Creek area — which includes Hoopa, Blue Lake, Burnt Ranch and Orleans — has more than 800 home delivery subscribers and nearly 600 single copy deliveries. the Garberville area has the lowest circulation numbers in the newspaper’s delivery area.

The newspaper’s introduction of an online subscription has also sparked some complaints. the Times-Standard’s parent company, MediaNews Group inc., launched a digital subscription model for 23 of its affiliate papers. Only daily newspapers were included, while other local MediaNews Group publications, including the Humboldt Beacon, the Redwood Times and the Tri-City Weekly, continue to be free online.

After the Aug. 15 announcement, one Facebook user, Miriam Holliman, posted, “what a laugh, no way would I even entertain the thought of paying for an online newspaper.”

Kuta said it costs money to provide news, and the newspaper industry is a reflection of how other industries have fared in the economy. He said change has been on the horizon for a while and likened the sale of online news to online music sales: “You used to be able to download music for free too. now it’s illegal to do that.”

”Our business is not different from any other,” Kuta said. “if you look at the businesses that have stayed afloat, they are not the businesses they were 10 to 20 years ago.”

Eco-Fashion Designer Gretchen Jones Wins Project Runway

November 4th, 2010

Heidi Klum called it “the toughest decision in Project Runway history,” a heated standoff between Team Mondo Guerra (Klum and Jessica Simpson) and Team Gretchen Jones (Michael Kors and Nina Garcia).  In the end, during its season finale Thursday night, eco-fashionista Gretchen Jones came out on top, beating fan favorite and projected winner Guerra (the first of the three to get eliminated) and fellow finalist Andy South.  Their reason—marketability.  While the other two designers demonstrated just as much talent as Jones, the judges agreed her line was more in line with current trends, which makes it more sellable than the ones put out by Guerra and South.

To favor Jones’ practicality over Guerra’s lavish details is really another repeat of the old fashion adage—less is more.  Costume is to look at, but at an economic time like this, consumers want what’s practical, wearable.  Couture is wasteful extravagance personified around an icon.  Fashion – at least wearable fashion – updates the everyday and makes it new and fresh.  Tomorrow’s outfit recycles yesterday’s ensemble.

Out of the 17 designers competing this season (the largest group in show’s history), Jones, a 28-year-old Portland-based designer for Mothlove, was the only one committed to creating sustainable and earth-friendly fashion pieces.  Although she never set out to preach sustainability on the show, she did set herself apart from the other designers by focusing on sustainable fabrics, and her ability to stay committed to her eco-friendly practices was one of Tim Gunn’s first concerns. “I’m a green designer because of my own ethics and my own concerns,” Jones says, “but if you don’t have a strong product, it doesn’t matter what your social and ethical practices are […] For the green movement to move forward, we have to create products that are worthy of everybody’s attention and interest and dollar.”

In the end, Gretchen Jones forced herself to let go of some textiles she was used to using and justified the fabrics she shopped for during the show by using only over-run materials from top designers, essentially recycling cast-offs that would otherwise go to waste.  She started the season as an early favorite, but as the episodes wore on, the other designers started turning on her, she became vilified, Tim Gunn called her a bully, and viewers developed a love-to-hate relationship with Ms. Jones. “It hurt my feelings, but in a way it helped me to have more exposure, because I was talked about, whether you liked me or not,” she told People Magazine. “I know in my heart I’m a good person.”

“I believe in conscious consumption,” Jones wrote in reply to her profile on Treehugger as an emerging green designer. “I think we need to be more present in the way we purchase. Buying timeless pieces with clean lines and then adding interesting accessories each season is the most sustainable way to dress. And that is how I approach my own designs.”

Michael Kors has stated that it’s a luxury to be a female designer, and in Jones’ case, that statement rang very true.  Out of the three finalists, she was the only woman, and her ultimate success came from not imagining what to dress a woman in, but to design based on what she herself would wear.  Her thought process pitted her against herself as her own customer, and it was a method that helped keep her in line with her eco-friendly values, because it forced her to create a line that can be marketed not as wasteful, but as functional, economical.  Sustainability in fashion translates to sustainability in budget.  Eco fashion isn’t a current trend running its course; it’s a value system, a lifestyle, one that values production and practicality just as much as it upholds beauty.

From Wedding Cookie Favors To Business Promotions, Put It On A Cookie!

November 1st, 2010

Wedding cookie favors, adorned with your bridal picture perfectly reproduced will be a sweet remembrance for your guests. A graduation or birthday party is the perfect time for the guest of honor to have their own signature cookie! Promote your business or service by putting your logo and message on a tasty treat. With this new technology you can take any photo or logo and perfectly transfer it to the icing on a delicious cookie, creating a personalized cookie treat, completely edible and safe. While this technology has been available in the cake decorating world for some time by transferring photo images to rice paper, this new method eliminates the rice paper and can now be directly reproduced on the cookie using FDA approved food colorings and a secret patented technology.

To achieve the best results a crisp clear photo should be used. The quality of the cookie picture depends on the quality of the image used. The clearer the photo and the more contrast within the photo, the better it will look on the cookie. It is recommended that you prepare your image with white backgrounds and large, legible fonts using colors that won’t blend with your background or image. Keep important text and design elements from the edge of your cookies as images can shift slightly in production. In order to have a higher resolution image, you should save your images at 300 dpi (dots per inch) and at approximately 3? diameter. However, your image can be re-sized to fit on the cookie.

Custom picture cookies can be made as cookie bridal shower favors, wedding favors, birthday favors, for bar/bat mitzvahs, christenings, as well as unusual promotional business items for conventions, business launches, trade shows and grand openings. Promotional business products have long been a standard way to interact with customers and clients and help a business or product be remembered, often with great success. Feel good products like cookies, create goodwill and fun and these are crucial objectives for any new business.

So if you’re looking for a way to make your next party memorable, you want a creative, thoughtful gift for someone special, or you need to get your business noticed, a personalized cookie may well be the way to go, because who doesn’t love a cookie? Chocolate or vanilla, sweet icing, and packaged in a cello bag. They’re even Kosher. When times are hard, people love to celebrate and feel special, more than ever. So find a picture and put it on a cookie!

Farmers market coupons available for Meigs seniors

April 16th, 2010

POMEROY — A program to assist seniors in the purchase of produce at farmers markets this summer will again be offered to Meigs Countians over 60 who meet certain eligibility guidelines.

The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) provides income-eligible senior citizens with special coupons worth $50 to buy produce.

For the convenience of seniors, applications will be available beginning April 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Meigs Senior Center in Pomeroy. The application is also available on the web site at areaagency8.org of the Area Agency on Aging 8.

The SFMNP is a USDA program in which grants are awarded to provide coupons to low-income seniors. Individuals are eligible for the Senior Farmers’ Market if they are 60 or over and have an annual income of $20,035 or less as a single person or $26,954 or less for a household of two. Each eligible senior receives $50.

Since grant funding is limited, Gwynn Stewart, Communications Director Buckeye Hills-Hocking Valley Regional Development District and Area Agency on Aging 8, stressed that “coupons are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.”

Each person will receive a total of ten $5 coupons: five $5 coupons valid from May 1- July 31 and five $5 coupons valid from Aug. 1- Oct. 31. she said.

“Coupons may only be redeemed by authorized participating farmers who sell produce at farmers’ markets, or roadside stands.” Stewart reported. She emphasized that the coupons may only be used to purchase “fresh, locally grown fruits, herbs and vegetables.” The program ends on Oct. 31, 2010.

Local farmers are needed to participate in the market program, the AAA representative reported. They may sell seasonal items as long as the farmer grows at least 51 percent of the produce sold and does not purchase produce from a wholesaler (one who does not grow the produce), Stewart said. A farmer may buy the rest of the produce — 49 percent of what is sold from other local farmers.

For more details on what products are included in the program or to become an authorized SFMNP farmer, contact the Area Agency on Aging 8 (AAA8) at 1-800-331-2644 or visit areaagency8.org.

Cooking Basics to Help You Relax and Enjoy

April 11th, 2010

Cooking is and should be enjoyable. With today’s economy people are eating at home more and learning ways to create their favorite meals and save money.

Cutting back on your food budget and saving time in the kitchen are both possible. Cooking shows on TV are a great inspiration and recipes for any type of food can be found on the Internet. The added benefit for you and your family is healthier eating. You will be amazed at how much less fat and sugar you consume when eating homemade.

Owning a few basic pieces of cookware and adding to them as finances allow and skills improve will create excellent meals. The following is a list of kitchen basics that are a good start and very versatile. When you have the right equipment, cooking becomes less challenging and more fun. An experience enjoyed by the whole family.

Pots and Pans

  • 10″ Cast Iron Fry Pan
  • 12″ Non Stick Sauté Pan with lid. Sauté pans have straight sides as opposed to the sloping sides of fry pans.
  • Sauce Pan with lid – 1 and 3 quart Stainless Steel
  • Cast Iron Dutch Oven – 6 or 8 quart with lid
  • Large Stock Pot
  • Large Clay Baker for Turkey, Chicken and Roast Beef
  • Baking sheets – 1 cookie sheet and 1 jelly roll pan with turned up edges.
  • Cake Pans – 1 8″ square, 2 round, 1 13″x19″ rectangular baking pan
  • Cooling Rack
  • Casserole Dishes – 2 or 3 ranging in size from 1 1/2 quart to 3 quart

Cutlery

  • Chef’s Knife – great all-purpose knife for all kinds of chopping and slicing
  • Bread Knife – serrated edge knife
  • Paring Knife – a shorter knife of 3 to 5 inches

Kitchen Tools

  • Digital Instant Thermometer – essential for grilling and oven roasting
  • Tongs – short and long
  • Whisk – 1 small and 1 large
  • Turners – 1 or 2
  • Measuring cups for both dry and wet ingredients
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Pastry Blender – this U shaped device is used for cutting butter into flour

When it comes to herbs and spices remember less is more for the novice cook. Always start out with a small amount, whether it is pepper, garlic, or cinnamon. You can always correct the seasoning right before serving or next time you make the recipe. But, you don’t want to ruin your meal with an overly seasoned dish.

When preparing recipes, remember that most recipes are not an exact science. Take chances, experiment, try new foods and substitute. Just because the recipe calls for beef doesn’t mean you can’t use chicken. If you don’t have fresh tomatoes use canned. The regular grocery store has hundreds of items that can make your meals special and healthier.

If you have questions while cooking, hop on-line, there is a plethora of knowledge and recipes available all over the web. Begin right at home by asking friends what they would do in a certain situation. Most cooks love what they are doing and are more than happy to help and share their creativity!! Bon Appétit!

Glycolic Acid – A Must Have Anti Aging Skin Care Ingredient

April 8th, 2010

Are you losing the battle against dry, flaky skin? Does it seem as though your skin appears to age dramatically during the long winter months? If so, you’re not alone, many people face this problem. The good news is there is a way to overcome this problem. There are multitudes of anti aging skin care products from which to choose the most effective ones for you. Unfortunately, there are many products that are a waste of money because they don’t include key ingredients that really address anti aging concerns. One key ingredient is Glycolic Acid (GA).

Is Glycolic Acid a Natural Ingredient?

GA is a derivative of some fruits, including grapes. The most common form is derived from sugar or sugarcane and can be found in many anti aging glycolic cream products, skin toners, facial cleansers and serums. Basically (GA) is considered a fruit acid and is used in skin care products with varying concentrations.

Why is Glycolic Acid an Effective Anti Aging Ingredient?

GA exfoliates the skin, removing old, dead skin to reveal fresh new skin. It improves the skin’s appearance and texture and hydrates the new skin while reducing wrinkles, age spots, scars and other hyperpigmentations. Caution should be used when selecting products with GA. Formulations used by Doctors have a concentration of approximately 35% to 50% and should be applied by a professional to avoid damaging the skin. Those with sensitive skin might start with a glycolic acid facial product with a 5% concentration to see its effect. Higher concentrations of 10%, 15% and 20% have become more common and provide great results. It is also effective for acne treatment and is used in acne reduction skin care products.

Choosing Your Anti Aging Glycolic Acid Facial Products

You’ll find GA in all types of skin care products: toners, moisturizers, exfoliators, cleansers, serums and creams. For optimal results you might use a facial cleanser with a higher concentration, then a skin toner and moisturizer or glycolic cream with a lower concentration. In addition to GA, look for antioxidant packaged skin care products with Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin A and Green Tea Extract to ward off free radicals and treat existing free radical damage caused by environmental stressors. Once the dry skin is removed, Chamomile Extract will calm the skin and help reduce redness. This combination will produce a fresher, more even toned and younger looking skin.

Please review the ingredients in a your facial cleanser, skin toner and anti aging skin moisturizer to ensure they contain the most effective ingredients to provide the best results. 1 2 3 Sheep! for iPhone is an engaging educational game: Review

March 29th, 2010

1 2 3 Sheep! Rating:

Educational games for all ages are becoming more and more popular across all platforms and no more so than the iPhone and iPod Touch. 1 2 3 Sheep! falls directly into that market as it’s a simple counting game at it’s core but also teaches the basic controls of the touch-screen controls of the iPhone/iPod Touch.

The game has a farming theme and as the title suggests it concentrates on the farmers sheep rearing. The game is split into 3 sections each with there own game. The first is Helicopter and it’s a simple counting game where you have to count the number sheep in the different groups, this obviously will help the child’s counting skills but also as you move through the 4 levels the child will also learn to use the accelerometer as they take control of the helicopter as they hunt for groups of sheep that contain a certain number as dictated by the farmer.

It’s the friendly farmer that guides you through all the levels giving you instructions and telling you whether you are right or wrong. This is one area where the game is slightly mis-matched as the text that the child is expected read is a little advanced compared to the counting in the game itself. For the first couple of times at least the game will have to be played with supervision to teach the child the rules of the game.

Next is Round Up where you have four levels of sheep herding to contend with. Again not only will this help the child to learn division as they have to split the sheep equally amongst the various pens but it also teaches them line drawing on the touch screen as while you can send the sheep to their pens by touching them individually you can also draw circles around them to send whole groups of sheep to a given pen at the same time.

Each of the three games is split into 4 days making a total of twelve levels to complete, unfortunately as there is no scoring the replay value is limited as there is no way to compare prior scores with your latest.

The final of the three games is Jump where multiplication is the order of the day as you help your sheep dog make it to the truck by leaping on the sheep in multiples of the number given to you once again by the farmer, again like the other two titles the game is simple to learn and should be easy for any child to pick up, however also like the other two titles once the four levels have been completed there is little replay value to the game.

What the game does offer however is the fact that it’s compatible with the App-titude online assessment which claims to be able to relay the scores of your child to their teacher providing that their school has signed up. How wide spread the sign-up to App-titude is can’t be ascertained but more can be read about it here [app-titude.com.au]

At $2.99 I would expect a little more replay value for my child to use this game, perhaps if your childs school is linked up to App-titude then it would be better value for money.
