Handwoven Tribal Laos and Issan Textiles: Quilts, Silk and …
Several tribes live in Sakon Nakhon: PhuThai, Yaw, ThaiSo, Kaloeng, Yoi, and Saek. The tribes have their own versions of the Thai language and traditional textile patterns.
They elect their own village chiefs and have a tribal sense of law and justice. For the most part, crimes are taken care of locally, no police or politicians get involved, even with crimes of murder.
I carry a pistol when I take long walks away from the village and pay attention to colors. I wouldn’t say the tribal boundaries are dangerous to cross it’ s just that you have no one to call for help.
Our village is Yaw and they weave by hand textiles for the family and to offer when guests arrive. It’s cold a few months a year.
This Yaw woman stands in front of a lifetime of handwoven blankets and quilts. Even around here it’s uncommon to find such quality. The new generation shops at Tesco.
She made all of these by hand with a traditional loom.
We bought this embroidery last year in Luang Prabang, Laos. The Hmong bring these from their villages to the night market for tourists. I paid 60 dollars which is a high price even for SE Asia, but we love it.
Here’s a detail of one of the panels: scenes of Hmong life.
The OTOP store in town sells these handwoven cotton scarves, blouses, shirts and dresses (as well as wild honey and mao berry wine).
And we have a shop in town for silk. Simple, organized patterns and bright colors just like the Thai lifestyle.
