To see whether this source of BPA was a concern, the researchers analyzed hundreds of samples of thermal cash register receipts and 14 other types of paper products from the U.S., Japan, Korea and Vietnam.

They found BPA on 94 percent of the receipts. the only receipts with that were BPA-free were those from Japan, which phased out this use of BPA in 2001. BPA was in most of the other types of paper products, with tickets, newspapers and flyers having the highest concentrations. but these levels still paled in comparison to BPA on receipts, which the study said are responsible for more than 98 percent of consumer exposure to BPA from paper. the researchers estimate that receipts contribute about 33.5 tons of BPA to the environment every year in the U.S. and Canada. they note that handling of paper products can contribute up to 2 percent of the total daily BPA exposures in the general population, and that fraction can be much higher in occupationally exposed individuals.

Abstract Bisphenol A (BPA) is used in a variety of consumer products, including some paper products, particularly thermal receipt papers, for which it is used as a color developer. Nevertheless, little is known about the magnitude of BPA contamination or human exposure to BPA as a result of contact with paper and paper products. In this study, concentrations of BPA were determined in 15 types of paper products (n = 202), including thermal receipts, flyers, magazines, tickets, mailing envelopes, newspapers, food contact papers, food cartons, airplane boarding passes, luggage tags, printing papers, business cards, napkins, paper towels, and toilet paper, collected from several cities in the USA. Thermal receipt papers also were collected from Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. BPA was found in 94% of thermal receipt papers (n = 103) at concentrations ranging from below the limit of quantitation (LOQ, 1 ng/g) to 13.9 mg/g (geometric mean: 0.211 mg/g). the majority (81%) of other paper products (n = 99) contained BPA at concentrations ranging from below the LOQ to 14.4 μg/g (geometric mean: 0.016 μg/g). whereas thermal receipt papers contained the highest concentrations of BPA (milligram-per-gram), some paper products, including napkins and toilet paper, made from recycled papers contained microgram-per-gram concentrations of BPA. Contamination during the paper recycling process is a source of BPA in paper products. Daily intake (DI) of BPA through dermal absorption was estimated based on the measured BPA concentrations and handling frequency of paper products. the daily intake of BPA (calculated from median concentrations) through dermal absorption from handling of papers was 17.5 and 1300 ng/day for the general population and occupationally exposed individuals, respectively; these values are minor compared with exposure through diet. Among paper products, thermal receipt papers contributed to the majority (>98%) of the exposures.

According to reports, solicitors approached members of the campus community claiming to sell magazine subscriptions as part of a fundraising effort for internships from the communication studies department.

The University Police put out a bulletin Tuesday warning the community that the scam is an attempt to obtain cash, credit card numbers and any other sensitive information from intended victims.

Officials warn the campus community to be wary of these solicitors and to report any suspicious activity to the campus police department.

those who have been victimized by this or any other scam should call the University Police Department at 916-278-6851 and file a report as soon as possible.

A similar solicitation attempt occurred during the 2009-10 school year when solicitors targeted Sac State students by promising a scholarship if students paid an undetermined amount to the solicitors. The solicitors specifically targeted KSSU 1580 AM, the campus student-run radio.

Campus police officers have been handing out cards with safety tips to students in the University Union.

Among other safety tips, the cards encourage students to refrain from giving out personal information to strangers.

Despite what most people might expect, Lilly Pulitzer’s house isn’t pink and green.

Oh, there’s pink, all right, on the ceiling. and green ­- pale green – walls in the family room. and a yellow living room the size of a ballroom and a turquoise front door with a bold "L" leading to a terra-cotta red foyer. and plenty of flowered fabric strewn on everything, including two kitchen refrigerators.

But the décor is far more sophisticated than the simple, cheerful prints and dresses she made famous, yet still looks exactly like the woman who lives in it – irrepressible and fun.

No one else in oh-so-tasteful Palm Beach would dare put a house together like this. it fairly bursts out the door with an exuberance of color, pattern, doo-dads from thrift shops ­- that female monkey candle holder isn’t wearing any pants! – and antiques with pedigrees as rarefied as Lillian Lee McKim Pulitzer Rousseau’s own.

And now this Lilly creation – this Lilly original – is for sale, which is why Lilly and her daughter, Liza Pulitzer, her mother’s real estate agent, are leading a tour through the house and 1.3-acre property.

With nine bedrooms and eight baths spread through the main house and two other buildings – "outhouses," in Lilly’s irreverent parlance – it’s simply too much house and requires too much upkeep for its owner, now 78.

The asking price is $11.5 million, in case you’ve got a big IRS refund coming.

"I’d never seen anything like it, it was a tropical arboretum," said Lilly of the day in the early 1980s when she and her late husband, Cuban-born Enrique Rousseau, discovered the lot on South County Road.

A bit south of Worth Avenue, in what island real estate agents call "the estate section," it was full of specimen trees and huge tropical plants.

Years before, it had been the garden of the 1920s oceanfront estate to the east and still contains the mansion’s old slat house, formerly used as a plant hospital, and a gardener’s house that Lilly calls "Lady Chatterley’s Lover’s cottage."

She worked on the design for a year with Hobe Sound architect Kemp Caler, trying to save every tree possible. the result was a house tucked inside dense foliage.

Then and now, huge banyans and a wild array of palms make curtains unnecessary. Paths run through the understory, used by resident cats, possums, foxes and raccoons.

Lilly furnished the rooms with an eccentric – to put it mildly – arrangement of fine furniture, upholstered in unstuffy fabrics and anything else that struck her fancy.

Prints are mixed with other prints, colors match or not – but the result is a home that Liza Pulitzer describes as "filled with great life and great light."

Listening, Lilly shrugged her shoulders.

"Anything goes with anything," she said, "as long as you like it."

On this cool day, she’s wearing a sweater the color of a ripe Florida orange, with a jaunty blue scarf tied at the neck. They’re both Lillys, of course. She’s barefoot, with bandages wrapped around her ankles to counter the effects of poor circulation.

Liza takes a moment to make herself a sandwich in the kitchen while her mother tries to persuade her to try the beef stew her other daughter, Minnie, dropped off earlier in the day.

Lilly, said Liza, is always feeding people, always cooking, always entertaining. Her turquoise door is usually open.

In fact, the woman who built a business from print dresses designed to hide juice stains and is famous enough to be known only by her first name, wrote two books about her barefoot chic Palm Beach life. Essentially Lilly: a Guide to Colorful Entertaining and Essentially Lilly Holidays, both with the late Jay Mulvaney, offer recipes, decorating tips and plenty of photos taken during parties at her house.

Well before she became famous for her flowered shift dresses, iconoclastic, bohemian Lilly was known for her parties. when she and her first husband, Peter Pulitzer, moved to Palm Beach in the early 1950s, they lived in a lakefront house and entertained constantly.

For the last week, I have had to run around the Clipper-Herald office, knowing what it’s like to not have your best piece of equipment by your side.the Canon camera that I have used for the past year  at all my sporting events, finally decided to take a nose dive at the GNAC Tournament in Kearney.of course, like any piece of electrical equipment, there is the normal wear and tear that comes with shooting photos everyday for news and sports, and sometimes, everyday life.but unfortunately, it stinks when the equipment decides to short out on you at the most important time. It always seems to happen then, am I right?so for the last week, I have been trying to find a way to get it fixed, I have been reading up on manuals and online forums trying to fix it. Finally, the camera was sent into Canon Professional on Tuesday, so it will be ready to go before the State Basketball and State Wrestling tournaments.for my Extra Point, Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez released a statement saying that he is committed to Nebraska and is staying. good. I think he needs to stay and hush all the critics that have been on his back since the Missouri game. I smell comeback next season.
