Arsenal need just a point from their trip to Portugal to secure qualification for the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

Braga were crushed 6-0 at Emirates Stadium in their opening Group H fixture and then appeared to drop out of contention for a top-two spot after losing to Shakhtar Donetsk.

However, home-and-away victories over Partizan Belgrade have put Braga very much back in the mix and they will be desperate for revenge against the Gunners.

Arsene Wenger’s men are level on nine points with Shakhtar at the top of the group and three clear of Braga, meaning that a draw on Tuesday night would guarantee they finish above the Portuguese due to a superior record in head-to-heads.

Arsenal will have set their sights on first place, though, and will want to win their final two group games to theoretically earn an easier draw in the next round.

It will also be important for the Premier League side to get back on track and produce a solid performance after losing a dramatic North London derby to Tottenham over the weekend.

Wenger has decided to leave out a trio of key players for fitness reasons so there will be a fresh look to the Arsenal side.

Gael Clichy has been left behind because of a back problem, while Andrey Arshavin is rested after being heavily involved this season and featuring for Russia last week.

Robin van Persie has only just returned from a long injury lay-off but is still not in peak condition and Wenger feels the Dutchman would benefit more from some hard work on the training ground than a trip abroad with possibly very little game time.

England left-back Kieran Gibbs and Danish striker Nicklas Bendtner are therefore set for starts, with a number of other players still out injured.

Goalkeeper Manuel Almunia (elbow), centre-half Thomas Vermaelen (Achilles) and midfielder Abou Diaby (ankle) are all sidelined, while Aaron Ramsey continues his rehabilitation following a broken leg.Braga news

Braga have injury concerns of their own, with Paulao having missed the last month with a thigh problem and Quim out until the New Year with a damaged Achilles tendon.

Manager Domingos Paciencia is nevertheless in confident mood ahead of a match Braga will feel they have to win, even though a draw could keep their hopes alive if Shakhtar also fail to beat Partizan.

“It’s unique for me and the team, because it’s the first time Braga have faced Arsenal at home,” said Pacencia.

“We have to face the English with a very positive mindset and although we know the value of their team and players, we still think that we have what it takes to win.”
