Thank God the Chilean Miners are being rescued safely! I’ve been watching the rescue live as it is happening, and as I write this two Chilean miners have been rescued from the tube which is carrying them up from the depths of the earth.

The second Chilean miner, Mario Sepulveda, gave rocks as gifts to the President, his boss and various rescue workers. The crowd celebrated and hugged him. He was all smiles.

Such a wonderful story! Hoping that the rest of the Chilean miners will be rescued safely.

9:46 pm PST: 31 Chilean miners are left to be rescued plus 3 Chilean rescue workers. The remaining Chilean miners are seen in boxers and hardhats, they cheer as the tube enters the mine.

9:50 pm PST: The 3rd Chilean miner has been sent up in the rescue tube.

10:10 pm PST: 3rd Chilean miner has been rescued.

10:30 pm PST: New live stream added.

10:52 pm PST: Carlos Solis, Chilean miner #4 heads up the rescue tube. (Desperate Housewives! Heh..)

11:08 pm PST: 4th miner rescued safely.

Nautical Antiques & Collectables Review

Just occasionally, I pick up a book and realise I have a quality product in my hands. It is nothing to do with size or format – just a certain finesse that speaks more than words. Jon Baddeley’s “Nautical Antiques & Collectables” is such a product. I was not surprised, therefore, to discover he works for Sotheby’s – a company of great quality in itself.

Generally speaking, scuba divers do not recover very many artefacts from shipwrecks and, even when they do, it might be some insignificant souvenir from the dive that is only of value to the diver – as a memento. Others quickly deteriorate on exposure to the atmosphere but even more were destroyed by immersion in salt water. Nevertheless, we do all retain a passion for ships and the sea and anything that goes with them and many of us do become avis collectors of anything (and sometimes everything) to do with the ships.

This book is an excellent choice for all those with an interest in Nautical artefacts. It is well laid out with headings which include Models, Instruments, Fixtures & Fittings, Arts & Crafts, Portraits, Ocean Liner Ephemera, Caring for one’s collection and finally where to go in the world to see what’s on display.

Quite frankly, there is little more one could ask of a book on this subject.

ANTIQUE ANGST: The Original Antiques and Collectables Fair organiser Ducie Hood.

TWO Tweed antique shows are set to take place on the same weekend of August 7 and 8.

Due to venue scheduling conflicts The Original Antiques and Collectables Fair hosted by the Tweed Gold Coast Family History and Heritage Association is set to take place a weekend later than previous years.

The event will now clash with the Collectables Exhibition & Trading Fair which will be held in Murwillumbah on August 7.

President of the Tweed Gold Coast Family History and Heritage Association and organiser of the original antique fair Ducie Hood said this was the first time there had been a clash.

“We are the original antique fair and in the past there have been no clashes,” Ms Hood said.

“It is a bit awful that they will both be on Saturday due to unforseen circumstances.” Ms Hood said booking issues with the venue led to the fair being held a week later than past years.

“Normally we have a standing booking for the annual antique fair and we have already booked the dates for next year,” Ms Hood said.

“The antique fair is now in its 12th year and we have always held it at the Tweed Heads Civic Centre.”

Ms Hood said that she hoped Tweed antique lovers will still travel to both antique shows during the weekend.

“I do hope that having them on the same weekend will not have a negative effect but you can not help circumstances and you have to go with the flow,” Ms Hood said.

“The Murwillumbah fair is only being held on the Saturday and the original antique fair will run all weekend so people will have the chance to go to both.”

The Original Antiques and Collectables Fair will take place at the Tweed Heads Civic Centre on August 7 and 8 and entry is free.

The Antiques & Collectables Exhibition & Trading Fair will take place at the Murwillumbah Civic Centre on Tumbulgum Road on Saturday, August 7 and will have a valuer on site.

Both fairs will feature a wide range of high quality antique items.
