Apartment is toast to Champagne

January 31st, 2011

NEW ORLEANS ? one entire wall of Margarita Bergen’s sunny Faubourg Marigny apartment is a joyously jumbled tribute to her favorite beverage: Champagne.

Floral Perrier Jouet bottles, red-striped Mumm bottles and orange-labeled Veuve Clicquot bottles are lined up like tipsy toy soldiers atop a glass table supported by sculpted swans.

The busy phalanx of bubbly bottles are festooned with masks, Mardi Gras beads, Santa Claus figurines, a Christmas angel, collectible chilling buckets and a poinsettia, among so many other things.

A cluster of nebuchadnezzars, bottles made to hold as much as 20 standard bottles, point upward from the floor like a festive missile silo. On the wall above, a huge Taittinger poster of an elegant woman, whose attenuated shape is mirrored by an enormous Champagne flute, rises luxuriously to the ceiling.

“I have been a dedicated consumer of Champagne since … forever,” Bergen explained as she gave a pre-Christmas tour of her cozy digs in the back of a violet-brown Victorian villa near Elysian Fields.

Writer, real estate agent, entrepreneur, art lover and all-around Crescent City cultural booster, Bergen is known for her bigger-than-life buoyancy.

Rarely seen without an eye-catching hat, Bergen is a regular at the theater, opera, museums and various social and entertainment events across town.

She is the social editor and sometime photographer for new Orleans Living magazine. Bergen also is the hostess of a monthly civic/literary round table at Begue’s restaurant in the Royal Sonesta hotel, which she calls “a gathering of who’s who in new Orleans.”

Born in the Dominican Republic, Bergen’s lively Latin accent lends a certain cosmopolitan tone to her every utterance.

Effervescent atmosphere

It’s the smoothness that draws her to Champagne, Bergen said, and the delicacy.

“There’s just something about Champagne that goes with my personality. it makes me happy, but I don’t like to overdo it.”

Bergen said her love of bubbly has taken her to the Champagne region of France twice. a picturesque river cruise through wine country was especially delightful, she said.

“I could not think of anything better to be associated with than Champagne,” she said.

Antique Stained Glass Windows and Antique Quilts – An Engineer …

May 2nd, 2010

You might think antique quilts and antique stained glass windows don’t have much to do with each other — and in most average homes they don’t. Maybe that’s why they’re average.

If you want to have a home that’s beautiful, unique and for sure not average, consider making use of the combination of an antique stained glass window and an antique quilt. You can use one or more of each in the same room. This opens up a world of decorating ideas.

The good news is that you can find antique quilts that will match any antique stained glass window — and vice versa.

The colors you can match with these two items will amaze you. There’s no decorating technique that gives you more freedom and options to accent any room and bring it to life.

As an engineer I can tell you that not only can you match the colors, but you can match the basic patterns – triangles, squares, circles, etc. When you can take it one step further and match the basic pattern, you will really have a room decorated fit for the cover of a decorating magazine.

If you don’t want to go to the expense and trouble of changing a window, you can get the same basic results by hanging an antique stained glass widow on the wall.

One of the best things about this decorating technique is that you can easily and quickly move design from one room to another — that is if you are hanging the antique stained glass window on the wall instead of installing it as a real window.

Take this idea and run with it and you will be amazed at how you can wow your friends and neighbors.

If you want to do all of this on a shoestring budget, you can find great bargains and almost unlimited selection of antique quilts and antique stained glass windows on eBay.

Coca-Cola Clocks – Signs Of The Times

April 19th, 2010

Throughout the civilized world, Coca-Cola advertising is incredibly well known and instantly identified. The company has for a very long time recognized that collectibles are a fine way to advertise among fans and those not yet devoted to their brand of soda. Items can be found to appeal to nearly any individual of any age and taste.

Some collect Coca-Cola clocks, signs, pins, sweatshirts and thousands of other memorabilia and objects both for their practical uses and for their logo. Their Christmas Santa appears on mugs, clothing and dozens of other objects and brings in sales year after year. Creation of this Santa in 1931 is believed to have popularized what we associate with how Santa looks.

Clocks with the Coca-Cola logo were originally made to be displayed in stores that sold the brand and many clocks also say “Sold Here”. They were often given to store owners free of charge as an incentive to be used in the store. Some clocks were quite simple in design while others were more elaborate and incorporated things such as neon lighting. Some collectors find these neon clocks to be art and display them as such or they incorporate them into the decor of their home. Others like having a simple and practical timepiece that also incorporates a favorite brand.

In addition to the vintage and older Coca-Cola clocks, in more modern times all sorts of watches and clocks have been made and continue to be very popular items. They make perfect gifts for Coke aficionados of course, but many who don’t have collections still have a fondness for the brand and enjoy even a single item. Clocks, after all, are imminently practical.

There are even pins made that are replicas of these Coca-Cola clocks, and people who specialize in pin collections and those who specifically collect advertising and logo clocks all seem to enjoy these attractive pins. They make excellent decorations for gift packages as well, and can hint at the kind of present inside to tease a collector.

Coca-Cola clocks may be either modern replicas or authentic vintage models. Either can be very valuable. New clocks containing sophisticated electronic chronometers and replicas of the old clocks may be just as expensive as the real vintage ones. They may even cost more at a sale or auction. The making of vintage replicas is a thriving business which sometimes provides an affordable alternative to the real thing.

Collectible Figurines By Jim Shore

April 12th, 2010

The enormous popularity of award-winning artist Jim Shore is the result of a lifetime of dedication, inspiration and plain old hard work. And as with most successful people, some good fortune has played a part as well. As Jim puts it, “Art is something I’ve done all my life. It’s what I’ve always loved and the only thing I ever wanted to do. But making a living as an artist isn’t easy. There are thousands of very talented people out there that never get a chance to show what they can do. I’ve been lucky. Not only do I get to do what I love, I get to share it with people around the world. I’ve been given a tremendous gift and I thank God for it every day.”

Jim Shore grew up in rural South Carolina, the son of artistic parents who instilled a love of the traditional values expressed in American folk art. His grandmother was a master quilter who taught him an appreciation for the patience and skill required to bring intricate designs to life. Jim drew inspiration from these roots. “There’s an innocence and purity to the quilts, appliques and folk scenery found in the early days of our country. These were masterpieces that were designed not for commission, but because the artists were driven to create. I collect quilts dating back over 150 years and when I look at the level of skill and creativity I am continually amazed. This is high art from humble beginnings.” Initially Jim pursued his art when and where he could. He studied engineering and received a degree in business – not art. He supported his young family as an engineer, honing his skills as a sculptor and painter in his spare time. But his passion was always his art, and after several false starts founded his own company, Designs Americana, to market his sculpture. “We went to a show with some of my sculptures and planned to manufacture them if we received enough orders,” Jim recalls, “We didn’t have a factory, didn’t really know what we were going to do. Luckily, we made the right contacts at the show and it all worked out.” Within three years Designs Americana had over 350 employees and more orders than they could fill. In fact the demands of managing Designs Americana made it difficult for Jim to concentrate on his art. “I needed to focus exclusively on the creative and artistic side of my work, and that meant finding the right business partner to concentrate on the three piece suit side of the business.” There was no better partner than Enesco, a worldwide leader in marketing gifts, collectibles and decorative accessories. In 2000 Jim joined forces with Enesco to create the Jim Shore line of seasonal and home accessories.

While working with Enesco Jim perfected his unique style, combining elements of folk art and a vibrant color pallet applied to traditional themes. To Jim, a Santa Claus isn’t just a Santa Claus, it’s a canvas to be painted. Taking designs from quilting, rosemalling, applique and flat perspective folk art, Jim creates an intricate and colorful work of art that reflects our shared cultural heritage yet is unmistakably Jim Shore. “I can’t imagine myself ever tiring of this,” Jim says of distinctive combination of themes and motifs, “I get to create two designs every time I develop a new piece – what the item will be and then what colors and patterns will go on it. The variety keeps me inspired.”

The magic of Jim’s design style is that it can be applied to a huge variety of themes and formats, creating a charming and innovative American country décor statement for the home. “My work is not a single statement, but a lot of elements mixed together. I use colors that I love – colonial, antiques, jewel tones and some unusual colors that I loved at the moment. Put together it’s a pleasure to look at. It doesn’t really matter what item it’s on. It’s just fun to look at-American Folk-Art.” Jim is now working to develop a more extensive lifestyle brand, creating functional home décor and fashion accessories using his unmistakable style. He will continue to solidify his position is the premier name in the specialty gift market through a selective licensing program designed to introduce innovative new products while maintaining high quality standards and exclusive distribution. The focus will be on exciting new formats that compliment the current brand offering from companies including Enesco, Department 56, Evergreen/Cypress and Manual Woodworkers and Weavers. Jim has received multiple awards from the National Association of Limited Edition Dealers, the premier trade organization in the gift and collectible industry, including:

NALED Artist of the Year 2003, 2004 and 2005

NALED Rising Star 2002

NALED Christmas Collectible of the Year 2003 and 2005

NALED Christmas Décor of the Year 2004 and 2005

How long has Jim been designing his line? Jim’s been designing his current line for Enesco since 2001, but Jim’s been a working artist designing wonderful products practically all of his professional life. Jim estimates he’s designed over 3,000 Santas in his career. Some of his older work can be found on auction sites like eBay or can be bought through private collectors. How are Jim Shore figurines made? Due to Jim’s busy schedule, it’s no longer possible for him to sculpt every item. Now he provides a detailed drawing of a new piece to a group of master sculptors, handpicked and trained by Jim over the course of many years. These artisans then produce clay molds that are sent to Jim for approvals to ensure they are faithful representations of Jim’s original art. Often these prototypes are revised several times until they are just right, down to the last detail and texture. Molds are made from these original sculptures and products are cast in POLYresin. Each piece is then painstakingly hand-painted and finished by artists using folk art techniques developed by Jim. Jim’s attention to detail and involvement in the entire process ensure products with the look and feel of real wood and have a quality and level of detail that is unique in the industry. Jim Shore figurines are a simply amazing set of sculptures. Between his Disney, Nativity, Angel and Santa Clause lines you are bound to find a product to fall in love with.
