Stocks Return to Losing Ways (MMM, COGT, INTC, IFNNY, SNY, GENZ, HPQ, DELL …

Despite another flurry of M&A activity, stocks returned to their recent losing ways. For companies with boatloads of cash, this is a good time to be a buyer given generally depressed stock prices. The same is true for individual investors as well. While economic uncertainty remains, we still believe stock valuations are attractive, with many bargains to be found for those with a long view.

The Chinese Advertising Stocks Index was the top performing tickerspy Index on the day, led by SearchMedia Holdings (IDI) with a 7% gain.

Stocks tumbled on the day, with the Dow falling -141 points to 10,010. The S&P slipped -16 points to 1,049, while the Nasdaq dropped -34 points to 2,120. Oil ended -47 cents lower to $74.70 a barrel, while gold edged up $1.50 to $1,237.10 an ounce.

On the economic front, the Commerce Department said that American personal income rose by $30 billion, or 0.2%, in July, following a revised -0.1% decline in June. Meanwhile, consumer spending jumped by $44.1 billion, or 0.4%, for the period after slipping by less than -10 basis points in the final month of the first half. Both July figures came in ahead of economist expectations for a 0.3% rise in spending and a 0.2% rise in income. The faster spending growth relative to income led to a lower savings rate, which reached 5.9% in July, compared to a revised 6.2% in June.

In merger news, conglomerate 3M (MMM) sent shares of Cogent (COGT) soaring by 24.5% after announcing plans to buy the firm for $943 million, or $10.50 per share — an 18% premium to Friday’s closing value. The target specializes in fingerprint scanners and other biometric technologies. The deal is worth about $430 million net of acquired cash, and is expected to close in Q4. At the end of Q2, two Pros held Cogent in their top-15 U.S.-listed equity positions, and 65 tickerspy members hold the stock in their portfolios.

Elsewhere, Intel (INTC) is looking to penetrate further into the cell phone chip market with the acquisition of the wireless unit of Germany’s Infineon Technologies (IFNNY), which trades over-the-counter in the U.S. The deal is worth $1.4 billion in cash and is expected to close in the first quarter of 2011. Shares of Intel fell -2.2%.

After a great deal of speculation, French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi-Aventis (SNY) confirmed its bid for biotech player Genzyme (GENZ) at $69 per share in cash over the weekend. Genzyme quickly spurned the offer, noting that the board “is not prepared to engage in merger negotiations with Sanofi based upon an opportunistic proposal with an unrealistic starting price that dramatically undervalues the company.” Shares of Genzyme rose 3.4% on the news.

Computer giant Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) gained 1.5% after it approved an additional $10 billion in stock buybacks amid a bidding war with Dell (DELL) over data storage firm 3Par (PAR). The company was already approved to repurchase about $4.9 billion of its own shares under a plan approved last fall, and the additional $10 billion was approved in an effort to manage the supply of outstanding shares and avoid dilution of the stock. Approximatley 309 Pros counted HP among their top-15 U.S.-listed equity holdings at the end of the second quarter, and currently 1092 tickerspy members hold the stock in their portfolios.

South takes precautions to cool off and prevent more deaths

August 10th, 2010

(CNN) — Football players in Georgia are hitting the field at night while an ice cream store in Tennessee is hurting for business as people stay inside to avoid the extreme heat that continued to cook the South on Thursday.

Memphis, Tennessee, Fire Department spokesman Wayne Cooke said the majority of its 444 firefighters were making house calls checking on elderly and disabled residents on Thursday.

During their checks, firefighters saw residents sitting outside under shade trees because their homes had become too hot. Cooke said he also saw people mowing their lawn — an activity that is not advised in extreme heat.

A combination of sweltering temperatures and high humidity could cause heat-related illnesses, the National Weather Service said. The number of suspected heat-related deaths reported by health officials across the South and Midwest in the past week reached at least nine Wednesday as temperatures continued to hit triple digits.

Cooke said the city of Memphis has set up cooling centers and encouraged neighbors to check on each other.

He cautioned people not to rely on fans to keep cool. “They don’t prevent heat illness. When it’s 90 degrees or above it won’t help,” he said.

The heat index — what the temperature feels like when combined with the humidity — is soaring across much of the South.

CNN Weather’s Judson Jones said Thursday’s heat indices ranged from 100 to 115 degrees throughout parts of the South and the Northeast. A cold front was expected to cool temperatures slightly Friday in the New England area, but no relief was expected for the South.

On Thursday, Little Rock, Arkansas reached 103 degrees with a heat index of 112, while residents in Jackson, Mississippi, sweated through a heat index of 114.

In Tennessee, even ice cream sales are suffering. John Ellis of Lexington said business has slowed at his family’s ice cream store as residents stay home and avoid going out into the heat. Ellis got into his car on Thursday and found the temperature readout to be 122 degrees.

“It was a mistake to get in the car,” he said, adding that with the air conditioning running and windows down the gauge still read 110 degrees for a 10-minute trip. “It’s almost too hot to even complain,” he said.

School has started in parts of Georgia. Cherokee County School District spokesman Mike McGowan said high temperatures are not that unusual for August. One of the high school football teams has moved its practice to the evening, he said, and officials are setting up fans in school gyms that don’t have air conditioning. Students are also allowed to bring bottled water on buses, about half of which have air conditioning.

Movies are the fun way to cool off In Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Starplex Cinemas is offering free movies to senior citizens age 60 and up whenever the temperatures hit 100 through the end of August.

People 65 or older, infants and young children, and those who are already ill are at greater risk for heat-related illnesses.

The Jackson County, Missouri, website offers these tips for staying cool:

– Avoid liquids containing alcohol or caffeine.

– Schedule outdoor activities before noon or in the evening.

– When temperatures reach the 90s, a cool shower can help more than a fan.

– Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, wide-brimmed hats and sunscreen.

– If you must work in the heat, monitor the condition of co-workers and ask them to do the same for you.

Scammers target local senior citizens

April 28th, 2010

Two high school classmates of admitted terrorist Najibullah Zazi were indicted Thursday in a foiled scheme to bomb New York City subways that a prosecutor said was directed by “al-Qaida leadership.”

Zarein Ahmedzay and Adis Medunjanin, both 25, pleaded not guilty in federal court in Brooklyn to charges of conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction, conspiracy to commit murder in a foreign country and providing material support to the al-Qaida terrorist network.

Zazi, a former Colorado airport shuttle driver who attended high school in Queens, pleaded guilty to similar charges this week. Zazi was arrested in September after he drove cross-country from Denver to New York, where authorities said he abandoned the bombing plan after realizing authorities were watching him.

Ahmedzay and Medunjanin are accused of plotting “three coordinated suicide bombing attacks” on Manhattan subway lines that were timed for one of three days after the eighth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, at the beginning of the work week, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Knox said.

The attacks were planned to resemble the July 2005 bombings on the London transit system, Knox said. Four suicide bombers killed 52 people and themselves in an attack on three subway trains and a bus in London.

The operation was “undertaken at the direction and under the control of al-Qaida leadership,” Knox said.

During the short hearing, U.S. District Judge Raymond J. Dearie asked prosecutors if they expected more defendants in the case. “Likely, although probably from overseas,” Knox responded.

Medunjanin and Ahmedzay face life in prison if convicted.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said this week that Zazi and two other bombers planned to kill as many people as possible. He didn’t name the two other suspects but said the plot had been disrupted.

Authorities have said the plot was one of the most serious terrorism threats in the U.S. since the 2001 terrorist attack.

“This attack would have been deadly,” Attorney General Eric Holder said.

Authorities have told The Associated Press that Zazi was cooperating with federal investigators before his guilty pleas this week. Asked whether Zazi would testify against his client, Ahmedzay’s attorney Michael Marinaccio said: “That’s a likely scenario.”

Medunjanin and Ahmedzay _ who authorities say traveled to Pakistan with Zazi in 2008 to join the Taliban _ had already faced charges in the alleged plot.

Medunjanin has pleaded not guilty to charges he conspired to kill U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan. His lawyer, Robert C. Gottlieb, said this week he didn’t know whether Zazi told prosecutors anything about his client but Zazi’s decision to plead guilty “obviously affects the overall prosecution.”

Gottlieb says he is seeking the suppression of any statements Medunjanin made while hospitalized in January after a car accident that happened after the FBI came to his Queens apartment to take his passport.

Gottlieb said after the hearing Thursday that authorities illegally questioned his client for hours without a lawyer present.

Gottlieb said he is seeking footage of hospital security videotapes, but prosecutors said at the hearing that the hospital might not have retained the videotape.

“I was under the impression that the materials … would be secured by you folks,” Dearie told prosecutors. “I thought I made that pretty clear.”

Gottlieb says he wants any statements his client made after he was discharged from the hospital suppressed too.

Ahmedzay has pleaded not guilty to charges that he lied to the FBI during the probe about places he visited during the 2008 trip.

Zazi’s uncle, father and a Queens imam face lesser charges in the case.

Associated Press writer Pete Yost in Washington contributed to this report.

Comment on ESC wars in stock. by Harry

March 30th, 2010

It’s an interesting time to be a “stock” racer at the moment. Main focus is on the speedie now rather than in previous years where flavour of the month has been on motors or batteries.

The latest generation of speedies are producing much more speed than anything we have ever had before – most noticeable on the straights but if the driver has his settings right then on the infield as well.

In the previous generation the LRP SPX was king but then along came Tekin with the 203 software and the SPX (and all the others including my Speed Passion) were left wallowing – now there is a titanic struggle from the others to catch and pass the Tekin.

Tekin RS Pro. It’s reasonably priced but then you need to buy the Hotwire which is the connection between the speedie and your computer. The latest software is v203 and it’s the one you want if you are going stock or super stock. Once you have the v203 loaded there are decisions to be made around such items as Timing advance, Push conrtrol, Timing Boost, Turbo boost, Turbo delay etc etc. There is plenty of advice around the net about these settings but some trial and error at your local track will pay dividends when you get a car that responds the way you want and is fast enough where you want it. I ran one of these in Tasmania at the titles and I am sure my car was fast enough and very driveable. Once you get the hang of using the hotwire, adjustments are very easy to make – the downside is you really need a computer at the track.

Black Diamond. Haven’t used one and unlikely to as, for me, it’s too expensive. Have watched others use it and, from what I’ve seen, and from what I’ve read, is no quicker than a Tekin and no more reliable. There is a school of though that it might be better on short (indoor) tracks.

LRP SXX Stock Spec. This is the next step after the SPX and promises great things, better than Tekin ? We’ll have to wait and see. The first production run suffered some minor problems and LRP offered to fix any that were sent back to them. One Brisbane driver has done this but hasn’t got it back yet. Then there was version 2 which Brisbane drivers now have and are starting to use and trying to figure out the complexity of settings etc. One of the drawbacks at this stage is that the LRP is not upgradeable and will necessitate buying a new one each time there is an upgrade or IF there are any upgrades. I personally haven’t seen one going fast in stock yet but I’m sure I will in the next week or so – faster than a Tekin ? I don’t know but I’ll be watching carefully. You can more easily change settings without a computer at the track. There appears to be some argy bargy about where to send esc for updating and about whether there is a version 3 or not.

SPEED PASSION. There has been a delay from Speed Passion getting out a software package to rival the Tekin 203. A small patch came out called 107 but it wasn’t quite good enough. Now there is a Beta (test) version around that drivers are able to download to their LCD Program Card (if you have one – I do ) and then to their GT v2.00 speed control. Once the programme (230 for 17.5 or 231 for 10.5) is in the ESC you revert back to the little hand programmer that comes with the speedie for adjustments there are 15 available adjustments at this point. This is good because it means you can easily make adjustment at the track without needing a computer. Speed Passion have called their boost system a Supercharger rather than a Turbo but I am assuming it will do much the same thing. Better than a Tekin? Well we’ll have to wait and see some of us have the programme loaded and are just starting to mess with the settings so give us a couple of weeks of fine weather and we might know more. Seems that from a marketing point of view having a delay getting the software right might be better than what LRP appear to be doing.

NOVAK. I don’t know what’s holding up the release of Novaks new esc but I believe it will be adjustable through a computer link like Tekin and SP other than that I know nothing, but I’m certainly not prepared to write Novak off yet.

If you are in the business of buying a speedie right now, which way will you go Tekin have some runs on the board, LRP and SP are showing a lot of promise and there are others to numerous to mention.
Good Luck.

There are 2 possibilities surfacing at the moment (1)to take stock and super stock back to true spec classes and (2) to abolish all motor and driver classes within touring cars and just have one class.

Speed Passion have just released a non adjustable speedie (can be adjusted for drag brake only) and there is a suggestion that this step back is the way forward for spec classes. With certain changes to motor rules (around timing) this should be a good thing. Don’t want to go slower I hear some saying fast is good. well have a look at the other proposition.

The fastest growing and numerically most successful class over recent years has been 1/8th nitro buggy. There is one class there – one size fits all – you can’t come and say I’m a novice put me in a seperate class, or I don’t want to go as fast as those guys etc etc. There is only one class and maybe, we should learn from them and just have one class. Run whatever motor you want and go do your best – operators could seed the first heat and then have frequent regrades during the meet. The speed of Nitro Offroad Buggies hasn’t detered many novices from getting into it – why do we keep using that as an argument to keep classes like 540 and stock in 1/10th onroad.

Somethings to ponder on a wet Sunday afternoon.
