Plastic replacing chlorine at treatment plant

The Dunedin City Council is enlisting the help of algae and more than 110,000 black bags to help clean the city’s wastewater stream.

Small mountains of the black bags have been appearing at several sites near the Tahuna wastewater treatment plant in Dunedin.

Council water and waste services manager John Mackie said together the bags contained about 10 million pieces of “plastic and air” costing $4 million.

Each bag held about 90 pieces of the plastic, purpose-built for padding in Mosgiel before being bagged, he said.

The bags would eventually fill two giant circular filter tanks to be built by September as part of stage two of the Tahuna plant’s upgrade, Mr Mackie said.

The tanks – with a combined volume of 10,000 cu m – would then serve as a trickling filter system.

Effluent would be poured into the tanks from a moving irrigator above and trickle down over the bags, the padded surfaces of which would provide a home for algae to grow, he said.

over time, the algae act as a biological filter by consuming nutrients from the wastewater as it ran over the bags.

The plastic shapes inside the bags served to maximise the surface area available for the liquid to flow over as it passed through the filter process.

The result was cleaner, lower-nutrient liquid coming out of the tanks at the bottom, which would then be subjected to ultraviolet disinfection before being pumped out to sea.

The contract for the plastic work was let to Veolia and then subcontracted to Simaplas, which was using workers in Mosgiel to manufacture and bag the plastic pieces, Mr Mackie said.

The work was part of the $75.8 million second stage of the plant’s upgrade, which is due to be completed by September 1 when existing Otago Regional Council consents – allowing chlorination to disinfect wastewater – expired.

Chlorination would not be permitted under new ORC consents issued after that date, Mr Mackie said.

While installing an industrial water filter it is best to take the assistance of the manufacturer in designing the system. The manufacturers sometimes even do the water testing in order to determine the size of the filter best suited for your needs.  

There are various industrial water filter options available in the market. It is important to select the correct filter type and size. Some of the options choosing the right industrial water filter are listed below:

The most popular industrial water filter is the Automatic Screen Filter. It is easy to install, is low maintenance with fast, high efficiency flush and low flush water volume. Its biggest advantage is that it can be installed in new as well as existing systems. Its fully automatic cycle does not interrupt the system flow during the flush cycle.

Gravity Coanda Effect Screen filters are quite easy to install. They are a low cost option and maintenance is easy. However, they require frequent periodic cleaning and a large footprint and have limited efficiency. They cannot be used above 200 microns or on pressure systems.

Bag and cartridge Filters are high efficiency filters that require a small footprint and interrupt with the work to the sub-micron level. But replacement cartridges are expensive and require frequent change outs. They range from medium to high cost

Media(Sand) Filters are also a medium to high cost option. It provides effective filtration to 5 microns and is high on efficiency. But it requires periodic media changes and also a large footprint. Flush time can also be as high as 10 minutes in this system and it requires twin systems for uninterrupted operation

Centrifugal Filters come at a low cost but are flow sensitive. They also cannot filter algae or particles below approximately 1.1specific gravity. However, their efficiency is high and they can operate continuously or in batches.

Tangential Screen Filters are again low cost and can be adapted to automatic operations. Its main disadvantage is its low efficiency flush, periodic screen removal and labor intensive pressure wash cleaning.
