Alexa Chung Talks Shopping At The Bicester Village British Designers Collective Launch

March 27th, 2012

Alexa Chung, Leah Weller and Zara Martin attend the Bicester Village British Designers Collective launch

Grazia Daily went on a very fashionable trip today to the glamorous industry insider launch of the British Fashion Council Fashion Collective shop at Bicester Village. Here you can peruse at your leisure such brilliant designer wares as Holly Fulton dresses and handbags, Jonathan Saunders jersey and knitwear, Preen womenswear, Markus Lupfer and Bella Freud’s posh knitted jumpers and even more…all at complete bargain knockdown prices. Whoohoo! And as if that wasn’t exciting enough, Alexa Chung was there to cut the ribbon and make a speech to christen the shop, saying she was ‘very excited to be here, with so much amazing British talent. I’m happy to be here, and happy to be going shopping here!’ And so are we, Alexa. we managed to catch up with the presenter/fashion muse/hipster to find out about her latest goings on…Grazia Daily: which is better for shopping, new York or London, as you’re now an expert on both?Alexa Chung: Err, they are quite similar actually, they both have good vintage shops, for sure. I think if anything, it’s depleting faster in London, so in new York you still have the chance to pick up some great gems. Whatever you need you can get it in either. For example vintage you can get in Brick Lane or Williamsburg, and then for high end you have Dover St Market in London or Barney’s Co Op in new York.Grazia Daily: you had such a great success with Madewell and then now you’re working with Superga. are you going to do any more designing any time soon?Alexa Chung: Well, for a start I didn’t actually design any shoes for Superga, I just art directed one shoot and then someone slightly miss-reported that so it seemed like I was designing the shoes myself, you know hand stitching them and so on. but I never did.Grazia Daily: what about some womenswear though?Alexa Chung: Yeah, maybe.Grazia Daily: Can you tell us any more than ‘maybe’? [we lock eyes with her quizically]Alexa Chung: [Very firmly] maybe.

Grazia Daily: what do you do with all the magazine covers you’ve been on? have you made them into a collage?Alexa Chung: what, like a face collage, that I use instead of a mirror?Grazia Daily: really?Alexa Chung: Yes, I collect them all together, stick them on the wall and use them as a mirror.Grazia Daily: Do you really though, you must be proud of them? Haven’t you kept them?Alexa Chung: I don’t, but my mum does have them somewhere. no, not in a book! Just sort of scattered around. In a pile I suppose.

Grazia Daily: you should keep them all, so when you’re 70, you can look at them all again.Alexa Chung: Well, when I’m 70, it’ll be a different story. when I’m 70, I’ll get them all off my mum, or off my publicist, and then I’ll want to look back at them all and frame them. It’s more like now, I wouldn’t do that, like have a shoot I did two months ago hanging on the wall, I don’t think that would impress anyone.Grazia Daily: what was the best thing about performing at Stella McCartney’s London Fashion Week party?Alexa Chung: That magician had the most amazing hair. The most hair on his head and not a single hair on his body.Grazia Daily: That’s a pretty good showbiz name-drop story…Alexa Chung: Well, that’s true but the trouble is, it’s not a story I could tell to any of my friends because either they were there, or they’re not interested in things like that. And it’s not a sort of family dinner table chat either. so, once again, I’ve just got to file these memories away for the future.

Thank you so much for chatting to us Alexa, it’s been a pleasure.

Kid’s costume too racy for Halloween? What’s a parent to do?

November 3rd, 2011

The annual Halloween parade Monday should be fun for all at St. Martin of Tours School in San Jose — as long as the students don’t show up in “anything scary or in French maid’s outfits,” Principal Karen DeMonner said.

The same is true for students who plan to strut their stuff at Santa Clara High’s lunchtime costume contest.

“Bunny outfits? Maid outfits? No, those are waaaaaay too short,” said Principal David Grissom, who years ago sent home a group of boys dressed as private parts. “All the costumes must adhere to the dress code. there will be no exceptions.”

For some adults, the scariest part of Halloween is what their children — and yes, unfair as it is, mostly their daughters — will wear to trick or treat. The rise of Lady Gaga, the TLC series “Toddlers & Tiaras” and the fact that stores sell “baby Chippendale” outfits hasn’t helped. The come-hither costume debate is rearing its head again, with some schools and a parenting psychologist saying it’s high time to crack down on inappropriate costumes, while others say you gotta let loose a little. at least while the moon is out.

Nora Rudd, a 14-year-old sophomore at Berkeley High School, dressed last Halloween as a scantily clad pig — in a pink crop top “as short as a bra” and matching Spanx-style briefs.

“Me and my friends wanted to go as the three little pigs,” she said. “And we wanted to be sexy. We were going to a party for the first time. my mom didn’t see my costume or know how extreme it was.”

Not a big deal

Now that Nora is maturing and has decided to dress as a football player, her mother doesn’t think a little skin on Halloween is such a big deal.

“I think battles about what they wear just means there will be more push-back and sneaking around,” Diana Harris said. “They grow out of a lot of this and just figure this out on their own.”

That’s not the advice BabyCenter contributor Dr. Susan Bartell, a parenting psychologist in Port Washington, N.Y., gives her clients.

“Every single year, I get parents coming to me, describing how their daughter’s cheerleader outfit shows her underwear,” she said. “Should I let her wear it? Should I fight the fight? I say, ‘fight the fight.’ if you don’t set limits now, it’s much harder than when they are 16.”

Bartell cringed while shopping for costumes with her teenage daughters.

What messages are these “oversexualized” costumes sending? she wondered.

The limits shouldn’t just be for girls, Bartell said. Boys, she said, who want to be “tough guys” and use “beer and cigarettes” as props, also should be told “no.”

The risque costume discussion certainly is not a new one. However, Bartell noted that the “ante keeps getting upped” because teen idols are getting “racier and racier.”

Teens are well aware of these racy times.

“Some girls turn Halloween into a skank-fest,” said Stacy Louie, a sophomore at Washington High School in Fremont. The 15-year-old plans to make her own tutu to transform into actress Natalie Portman’s character from “Black Swan.”

Elisa Rerolle, a junior at Palo Alto High School, is trying to figure out why her peers turn “Halloween sidewalks into lingerie catwalks.” The 16-year-old pondered that question in a column for a school magazine. Her title: “Why so Sexy?”

“Please ladies,” she wrote, “let’s try to keep those outfits on the Victoria Secret’s runway. … Seriously, where have the fluffy sheep suits and wholesome fairy costumes gone?”

Elisa blames puberty on her peers’ flirtation with taboo outfits; one particular Latex kitty outfit worn by a classmate last year and blasted on Facebook sticks out in her memory.

But even she is conflicted about the whole issue.

“At some point in my life, when I get a bit older, I might also dress a bit provocatively,” said Elisa, who hasn’t decided yet if she’s going to dress up at all this year for Halloween.

Natalie Foster, a seventh-grader at Claremont Middle School in Oakland, knows exactly what she’s going to be: “Quorra,” a voluptuous, but fully covered, ISO from Disney’s “Tron” movie. Her mother, Susan Haufler-Foster, is pleased with her daughter’s Halloween choice. Still, she said she would be fine if her 12-year-old wanted to play dress-up and strap on some high heels and a rock-star dress.

“For school, you have to tone it down,” she said. “But at night? she could be whatever she wanted. Lady Gaga? Katy Perry? Yeah, that would be fine. It’s Halloween.”

Emmanuel exhibitionAN EXHIBITION will be held next month to celebrate work carried out abroad by Emmanuel pastor Jamie Tonge and his wife Christine.

The couple have been travelling regularly to Mozambique over the last three years to work for the Christian organisation IRIS Ministries.

Their latest trip was in April when Jamie taught at a central Bible school in Pemba.

Not resting on their laurels, the couple are preparing to go out again next year.

But before then they will hold a two day exhibition on their work, to which all are invited.

The event will start off on Thursday 14th August at 7.30pm, but will run from 11am the following day, when a fund-raising lunch will be on offer to all those attending.

Minister’s inductionAn induction ceremony will be held in Yell next month for the new Church of Scotland minister in the North Isles.

Rev David Cooper is taking over the role in Fetlar, Unst and Yell following the previous minister’s retirement.he was mentioned in Linklines two months ago as a possible surprise candidate for some – not least because he trained as a Methodist minister.

He is already a well known face in Shetland, having worked at Scalloway Methodist Church for some time.his induction will take place on 23rd August in Cullivoe.

Student placementShe is half way through her studies at Aberdeen University, but that has not stopped Elspeth MacLean from enjoying a stay in Delting and Northmavine over the summer.

The trainee Church of Scotland Minister decided to take part in the voluntary training after she was offered the chance of a placement in a rural location.

Born in Yorkshire, she moved to Scotland with her family as a baby and since then has lived in a number of places north of the border.

But this summer’s placement is by far the furthest north she has been. she says she is enjoying her stay here, which started on 2nd July and is due to run on until 11th August.

Prayer eventThe first in a series of district prayer events for Methodist churches took place in Haroldswick this month.Held on July 5th, the event has been designed to focus on the needs of individual communities.

Before the event took place, prayer cards were produced and distributed to Methodist preachers so that prayers would be said regarding the church and community needs in the North Isles.

“It’s a way of encouraging and exciting people about the potential of prayer,” said Methodist minister Nigel Barton.

Similar events are planned elsewhere in Shetland, with a prayer day in Vidlin scheduled for November.

Beach partyThe days leading up to it were damp and grey, so it must have come as a great relief for Lerwick Baptists when their weekend beach party at Sound turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far.

Crowds of people turned out for the event to enjoy a day of music, food and entertainment, as well as the chance to meet new friends and catch up with old ones, too.

Fears of a wash out were laid to rest, as the sun beat down in the summer heat – all of which saw many people take a dip in the water before the day’s end.

The day’s activities were held as part of a church effort to get to know residents in the Sound area.

Plans are well underway for the new Baptist Church building, which is scheduled to go up in the Quoys area in the next few years.

The strong summer theme of the beach party contrasts with the cosy winter atmosphere of the church’s watch-night service, which was held in the Sound Hall last Christmas.

Lace dress / lace skirt: women's trend > Women's Fashion Trends > Blog

November 6th, 2010

Written by Tania Braukamper

A trend round-up to inspire you for late-Summer 2010, but also a trend that you’d be amiss not to carry in to Autumn / Fall 2010 / 2011: lace dresses and lace skirts.

Right now you’re thinking that this is nothing new. And you’re right; it’s an extension of the sheer trend that’s has, for some time, firmly cemented itself as its own, independent trend. So what follows is, instead, more about how to wear the trend now, and how to set yourself apart from the masses – so that you can bring it forwards and into a new league.

  • Types of lace
  • How to wear it
  • Who has been wearing it

And don’t forget: if you want to keep up to date with all the latest fashion trends be sure to subscribe to our fashion newsletter or our RSS feed.

Above: Supermodel Natasha Poly in a Miu Miu Pre-Fall 2010 black and white lace dress snapped by all the pretty birds.

Types of lace

There are many different types of lace, and various methods for producing it – so many that we won’t go into them here. The long and short of it is this: it’s now less about the stretch, allover lace, and more about antique-style lace. Fabrics that look like a more traditional needle or bobbin lace (even if they’re machine made). Generally, go for a wider net, a more unique pattern, a sturdier fabric – rather than a thin stretch lace.

Left: wear less. Right: wear more.

How to wear it

The ultimate balance of lace in 2010 / 2011 is to be romantic but not over-girly; sensual but not over-suggestive. Like taking beautifully crafted lace that would have once been part of a garment and making it the only layer. The lace isn’t an added detail of a garment, it is the garment. And thus we come to lace skirts and lace dresses. Dare to wear them without a slip underneath. Just keep the cut a little more relaxed or the hem a little longer to maintain that aforementioned balance.

Some people’s wardrobes are about a small selection of pieces that all fit within one aesthetic – Tania Braukamper isn’t such a person. With a wardrobe that spans three different rooms, her approach to fashion is a mixture of current-season key pieces mixed with vintage finds she’s sourced on innumerous shopping trips around the world’s more cultured capitals. Despite a disparate approach to shopping, Tania is adamant that the key to mixing vintage with new season is to stick to key looks and colours that work for oneself. And it’s a theory that she works into her writing for Fashionising.com, where she serves as the publication’s Editor.

High hopes for Biketoberfest in Daytona

October 30th, 2010

Businesses in Daytona Beach are rolling out the red carpet for riders as they prepare for the 18th Biketoberfest Oct. 13 through 16, and the promise of profits it brings.

Carl’s Speed Shop owner Carl Morrow is cautiously optimistic that the economy won’t keep bikers from rolling in.

“They’re not waiting for someone to tell them they can take vacations,” he told the News-Journal.

But he says the tight economy also means a new yardstick for rally success.

“We struggle, like everyone else in these times,” he says. “It ain’t a downhill pull, by any means.”

Organizers and vendors are encouragted by attendance numbers from Sturgis in August.

Destination Daytona’s sales were down slightly for this year’s Bike Week from 2009, although the sales department declined to give exact figures, Mandy Rossmeyer Campbell told the newspaper. The store’s sales goal this month is 400 motorcycles.

It’s encouraging that advance T-shirt sales are up about 10 percent from last year, says Jim Gallagher, whose Mid-Florida Sportswear prints the official Biketoberfest T-shirts.

Some merchants got stung in Daytona’s bigger and earlier Bike Week and aren’t eager to shell out for Biketoberfest.

Biketoberfest is still one of the last chances for northern riders to head south before winter forces their rides into garages, said Janet Kersey, Biketoberfest founder and president of the Daytona Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The bureau has started using social networking and blogging bikers to promote the event, and Kersey said the bureau is hoping to beat last year’s Biketoberfest numbers with 125,000 to 150,000 attendees and a more than $200 million infusion into the local economy.

Top 10 Gifts for Teenage Girls | Consumer Top 10

August 23rd, 2010

.
Teenage girl at home?
Is your little girl now a teenage girl? You probably have realized in the last year or two that finding her the best present wasn’t just as simple as when she was a little kid. Teenage years are sparse with emotional changes, a need for self discovery and individuality. Obviously animal books and barbies won’t do it anymore.

How to pick a present for a teenage girl
Before choosing a present for a teenage girl, have a look around the house. Determine what she likes, what her favorites are, such as colors, music genre or accessories. Is she following some particular type of fashion or some particular celebrity?

Types of gifts
There are numerous gifts ideas to choose from. Browse online, or read girls magazines to find out what the latest trend, most popular TV shows, singers and movies are in the teenage world. Best are not to buy any piece of clothing, but rather to buy accessories. It can be difficult to buy a piece of clothe for a teenage girl, and keep in mind that sizes can differ from one store to another.

Top 10 Gifts for Teenage Girls

.

1. Notebook

.
Nowadays, technology is part of any kid and teenager every day life. While laptops can be heavy and bulky to carry around, especially for a small teenage girl, notebooks are great size electronics that will fit any purse or backpack. We highly suggest the ASUS Eee PC Seashell Karim Rashid Collection 1008P-KR-PU17-BR 10.1-Inch Netbook, with its vibrant colors and great reviews.

2. Rain boots and rain gear

You probably noticed how popular rain boots and rain gears have become in the last year or two. Funky rain boots, like those Chooka Women’s VooDoo Graphics Rain Boot are very in this year. Not only they will keep her feet dry and warm, but get her lots of compliments everywhere she goes.

3. Bags and handbags

There is a large range of bags, handbags and purses to choose from. Is she planning a trip with her friends? Why not get her some travel bags and suitcases, in her favorite color or pattern?

4. Jewelry and accessories

Jewelry is always a big hit with teenage girls. But watch out for her style. Is she the sophisticated type? A silver necklace will suit probably suit her more. However, if she is the funky type, look for heavier louder jewels, that will match her style and personality.

5. Personal diary

Teenagers are very sensitive and teenage years also mean going through a panoply of emotions. A quality personal diary can help guide her through her emotion and should have plenty of room for her to write. The personal diary will allow her to go months back and realize how much she has achieve since. We recommend the Girl’s Only, A Teen Journal – Pink Hard Cover.

6. MP3 player

No matter what her music genre is, an mp3 player is always a great choice. Plus there are so many good mp3 players to choose from. Choose from the best of the best: iPod, SanDisk, Zune, Sony Walkman.

7. Books

If you have an insatiable reader at home, get her the latest best sellers. Find out what her favorite authors are, or look for best-selling books, such as Twilight or Harry Potter.

8. Magazine subscription

Teenage girls can spend hours in their bedroom, flipping through girls magazines. Did you know that buying magazines at the store can cost as much as 10 times the cost of a magazine subscription? If you know her favorite magazines, why not buy her a year subscription to her favorite magazines (or even 2!). We highly recommend the Seventeen (1-year).

9. Gift certificate

Not sure what to get her? A gift certificate is a safe bet. Of course she knows better what she likes. However, make sure to get her a gift certificate from one of her favorite store, to ensure use of it!

10. Make up and perfume

What can I say? New make up sets and perfumes are always welcome in the bedroom of a girl!

Trends in Children's Fashion for Fall 2010

July 25th, 2010

USA: Trends in Children’s Fashion for Fall 2010

Juvie, the popular online children’s retailer of clothing, gifts and accessories for boys and girls, announced their take on the trends and must-have items for back-to-school season, fall 2010.

The overall trend in color this fall in children’s fashion is for richly saturated hues, with lots of plaids and patterns.  Girls will be drawn to the fun mix of bright prints from Desigual, a knitwear designer from Spain that does funky cool separates.  Wati’s designs for fall are similarly rich in tone, but with a more refined feminine look in crisp solids.  Boys will find lots of deep blues, reds and greens in Appaman’s Brooklyn-cool fall line.

The time lag between adult and children’s fashion continues to narrow this fall, with several trends that are hot on the heels of their grown-up counterparts.  Jeggings take a girl’s two favorite pieces (jeans and leggings) and combine them into one go-to garment she’ll reach for day after day.  Look for dark wash jeggings from It Jeans in July.

The overall silhouette can stay slim for girls with a faux-leather motorcycle jacket, or can be contrasted with a puffy coat from Appaman.  “Appaman’s puffy jackets for girls and boys sell out every year, so we suggest getting yours as soon as they arrive at the end of July,” said Juvie’s spokesman Kristen Taylor.

Motorcycles, robots, and snowboards dominate the graphic prints you will see on boys this fall.  Wes and Willy will pair these modern looks on classic preppy pieces to keep the guys up to date.  Girl’s prints are turning Japanese, with kawai cute animals and other characters from Tokkidokki and Lil’ Panda.

Juvie focuses on high quality, age-appropriate and and modern clothing at great prices for boys and girls in sizes 2T-14.

Fall 2010 lines will be arriving from the beginning of July through August.

About Juvie LLC: Juvie, the online boutique for older boys and girls featuring clothes for kids sizes 2T-6 and tweens sizes 7-14, also has funky and unique gifts and accessories that kids love.
