Free Comic Book Day hits Kokomo
Comic book and sci-fi fans from throughout the communitydescended upon Kokomo Comics and Baseball Cards on May 1 incelebration of Free Comic Book Day.
The annual event takes place nationwide in an effort toencourage literacy and to promote the comic arts. Comic companiesproduce free issues that are unique to the event. Demand for thetitles is so high in Kokomo that the books had to be rationed, oneper customer, according to Kokomo Comics manager Shawn Hilton.
In Kokomo, the event was attended by members of the 501stImperial Legion from “Star Wars” lore, which included appearancesby stormtroopers and a rather familiar bounty hunter.
The event also featured a “Geek Yard Sale,” which invitedvendors to set up tables in front of the shop to sell vintageaction figures, movie memorabilia, original artwork, and othercollectables.
A portion of the proceeds from the yard sale went toward fundingthe newly announced Kokomo-Con comic convention, set for Oct. 23 atthe Kokomo Event Center.
