Monday storm cuts power to 1,400 APS customers
A monsoon storm Monday left more than 1,400 customers without power, according to Arizona Public Service.Following a dust storm, the afternoon thunderstorm poured rain in parts of southwest Yuma County, including Yuma, Somerton, Gadsden and the Foothills.“the storm has affected quite a few people out in Yuma County,” APS spokeswoman Jenna Shaver said.Shortly before 5 p.m., the storm left 1,300 customers without power inside the boundaries of north to 26th Street, south to 30th Street, west to Arizona Avenue and east to Avenue 2E.another 85 customers lost power inside the boundaries of north of County 1st Street, south to County 6th Street, west to the Colorado River and east to Avenue 8E.from Avenue 3E to County 15th Street, 19 customers lost service.by 8 p.m., APS reported that 118 customers remained without power, with 60 between County 14-1/2 and County 16th streets and South Avenue 4-1/2E to South Avenue 5E.the estimated time of restoration was late evening until the early morning hours.“We do have two poles down,” Shaver said Monday evening.another 39 customers had no service between East 36th and East 37th streets and South Hunter Avenue to South Sandra Avenue. APS estimated that power would be restored by early evening.Nineteen customers were without power between County 15th and County 15-1/2 streets and South Avenue 3E and South Avenue 3-1/2E. APS also estimated restoration of power by early evening in that area.AccuWeather meteorologist Mike Pigott called the weather a “pretty standard monsoon thunderstorm.”He said the most impressive part of the storm were the winds of 49 mph.While rain and hail poured in some places, such as the Foothills, others places remained dry.
