Makita 9820-2 1.1 amp Horizontal Wheel Wet Blade Sharpener « Destination Surgery Your Source for Plastic Surgery and Cosmetic Surgery Overseas

March 22nd, 2011

I love this thing! I got mine and right away put my Dewalt planer blades to the test, I got a very sharp flat straight edge in minutes after reading through the directions once. I then took the guide off and sharpend my chisels and gouges after which I sharpened every knife I could find. the 1000 grit stone removes metal at just the right speed. After I get a good edge I turn it off and just hone the blades on the wheel while its not moving to put a finishing touch on the edge. I plan to buy the 6000 grit stone for hunting knifes and chisels. the water system takes practice and the plastic skirt around the stone that keeps water from spraying around has to Makita 9820-2 be up or you get a mess. Its so easy to set up it saves a lot of time over using hand stones. I also plan to get the chisel guide to make getting a perfectly straight edge easyer to acheive.

The Makita Sharpener is a necessity for the serious woodworker. It works like a motorized Japanese Waterstone (which in fact it is). Included in the basic package is a great blade rest that will accomodate most jointer/planer knives and a 1000 grit wheel. you have to practice a bit with the water control knob in order to keep the flow of water onto the wheel at the correct rate, but this is easily done. I recommend that you also purchase a coarser stone for use with removing knicks from your blades; this will save lots of time. one of the best features of this sharpener is that it is one of the few that will allow you to flat grind your edges; other water sharpeners like the DELTA and the TORMEK hollow-grind knives which removes a lot of metal from near the edge. this weakens, I believe, the knive blades when compared to flat grinding. you can also find a great technical supplement for using this sharpener.

Plane’s pilot and teenager died in glider collision

THE RAF has apologised for supervisory failings over the deaths of an Abingdon pilot and a schoolboy in a mid-air collision in Oxfordshire last year.

Flight Lieutenant Mike Blee, 62, and Nicholas Rice, 15, of Calcot, Reading, died when their Grob Tutor trainer aircraft and a glider collided above Drayton in June 2009.

Mr Blee was conducting aerobatics in his Tutor aircraft when it crashed into a standard Cirrus glider before plummeting to the ground.

the glider pilot, Henry Freeborn, of Lee-on-Solent in Hampshire, parachuted to safety.

Two investigation reports from the Air Accidents Investigation Branch and the Royal Air Force said a medical condition known as Ankylosing Spondylitis — limiting the mobility of Mr Blee’s upper spine and neck by an estimated 50 per cent —was a contributory factor in the crash.

however, the RAF said its failure to question the tutor pilot’s medical fitness for the role and a lack of training in being able to eject from the aircraft contributed to the cause of the crash and deaths.

Mr Blee, who joined the RAF in 1964, was judged to have had difficulty with being able to see properly out of the plane by a consultant rheumatologist in 1997.

His condition meant his neck vertebrae were rigidly fused, which made it difficult for him to look up. His permanent bending of the spine meant Mr Blee stood awkwardly.

an RAF panel which looked into the crash has ruled that Mr Blee’s supervision as a pilot in the RAF and while with the AEF was not “sufficiently robust” and there was a “reluctance to question the tutor pilot’s medical fitness for the role”.

the mid-air collision on Monday, June 14, last year happened at 4,100ft with the aircraft believed to have crashed into the ground 24 seconds later.

the panel ruled that the pair had too little time to abandon their aircraft.

however, Mr Rice’s harness was found undone and the canopy was unlocked meaning an attempt may have been made to abandon the aircraft.

This “attempt” did not follow the pre-flight safety briefing video though, leading the panel to rule that a lack of training into aircraft abandonment was an aggravating factor in the accident.

It is not known whether Mr Blee was incapacitated after the collision with the glider preventing him from abandoning the aircraft.

Air Vice Marshal Mark Green, Air Officer Commanding of 22 Training Group, said: “We have apologised to the families for shortcomings in our supervisory processes which may have contributed to this sad outcome. We have taken extensive action to ensure that Air Experience Flying for cadets remains safe.”

since the accident the RAF has implemented 12 of the 18 recommendations from the inquiry and is working to implement the other six.

Observations: The best body mass indexes for low mortality rates

December 9th, 2010

Want to pencil in a healthy target weight for that new Year’s resolution? A new analysis of data from 1.46 million adults has zeroed in on the body mass index (BMI) with the lowest risk of death from any cause—and they aren’t the ones that most tilt the scales downward. For healthy white adults who don’t smoke, those with a BMI (based on height and weight but not body composition) between 20 and 24.9 had the lowest risk of death after a median follow up period of 10 years, according to the new report, which was published online December 1 in the new England Journal of Medicine. For a 179-centimeter (five-foot nine-inch) tall individual, that would be a weight between about 61 and 76 kilograms (135 to 168 pounds). the researchers analyzed data from 19 studies that collected information on height, weight, lifestyle and demographics from non-Hispanic white adults ages 19 to 84. With the abundance of data, "we were able to evaluate a wide range of BMI levels and other characteristics that may influence the relationship between excess weight and risk of death," Amy Berrington de Gonzalez, of the National Cancer Institute and co-author of the new study, said in a prepared statement. Berrington de Gonzalez and her colleagues controlled for age, alcohol consumption, education, marital status, physical activity as well as variation across studies. (Most of the information collected in the various studies was self-reported by the subjects, but the researchers developed an algorithm to adjust calculated BMIs based on common self-reporting errors.) Two thirds of U.S. adults are currently considered overweight or obese (having BMIs 25 and over). the new range of lowest mortality risk for healthy non-smokers falls within the current span of "normal" BMIs for men and women (which is 18.5 to 24.9). when the whole subject population was assessed, however, those with higher BMIs (22.5 to 24.9) had the lowest mortality rates. But when the researchers omitted current and former smokers as well as those who reported cancer or heart disease, the optimal BMI range was 20 to 24.9. (Those with the lowest BMIs were the most likely to be current smokers, but those with the highest BMIs were the most likely to be former smokers.) as the report authors note, underweight individuals (those with BMIs 18.4 and under) are a tricky bunch to assess and might still be skewing some of the results. some might be slim due to undiagnosed illness that could increase their risk of an early death, and others might be leading a healthy, active lifestyle that could help them live longer. And the longer the follow-up period, the lower the mortality rate for people with lower BMIs, the researchers found. (Because the new study was a meta analysis of previously collected data, the researchers were not able to track the impact of weight loss or lifestyle changes on mortality risk.) those at the upper reaches of the BMI scale had the highest mortality risks. Obese women (those with BMIs of 30 to 34.9) who had never smoked and didn’t report any disease at the outset of the study period were about 44 percent more likely to die during the follow-up period than those with BMIs of 20 to 24.9. that likelihood doubled to 88 percent for otherwise healthy women with BMIs of 35 to 39.9, the researchers found. as of 2008, some 17 percent of non-Hispanic women in the U.S. had BMIs 35 and above, the researchers noted in the paper. In addition to the high rates of obesity in U.S. adults, the pattern might be especially worrying with the growing number of overweight young people. the researchers found that the overall increased risk of death for those with BMIs 25 and above was strongest in individuals who had topped that number before the age of 50. The Blue Vial: Eden and After (Alain Robbe-Grillet, 1970)

    September 29th, 2010

The late French author/screenwriter/director Alain Robbe-Grillet is probably best remembered within cinematic circles for penning the screenplay for Alain Resnais’ arthouse masterpiece Last Year at Marienbad, one of the greatest endlessly debatable cinematic puzzles ever crafted. After publishing a handful of novels in the 50′s, and making a name for himself with his Marienbad work, Robbe-Grillet then jumped into film directing. His third film (and first in color) is 1970′s Eden and After, an enormously confounding and evocative head-scratcher that jumps from one stunning location to the next as its characters seemingly explore such concepts as the loss of innocence, birth and rebirth, obsession, fear and erotic power, en route to some deep personal revelations and possible transformations. Or of course it all could just be a really intense drug trip.

The ‘Eden’ of the title is in fact a university cafe – a large construct of “all glass and steel” – where a group of apathetic students apparently live, routinely indulging in transgressive behavior of all sorts; drugs, orgies, russian roulette games, inventing plays and stories and various other abstract rituals and activities to pass the time and give meaning to their dull lives. Visually, Eden is quite a sight to behold; a labyrinthine compound comprised of mirrors and glass partitions, and painted in primary colors; kind of like a Tati set on psychedelics. At times the camera glides throughout Eden while the students stand around like lifeless phantoms stuck out of time, and in these moments it’s difficult not to think of the hotel and its denizens from Last Year at Marienbad. There is a sense of unpredictability and spontaneity to these sequences; we are seemingly dealing with young people who share a complete disregard for life, constantly living for only the moment, and it feels like anything could happen inside this New Wave haunted house.

One day, a mysterious stranger named Duchemin (Pierre Zimmer) enters Eden, and regales the students with his magic powers and tales of life in Africa. He eventually produces an African “fear powder” from his pocket, and one of the students, Violette (Catherine Jourdan), takes some of the powder and instantly launches into a series of terrifying and prophetic hallucinations. She engages in a mysterious dance while still on her trip, before eventually coming down and making plans to meet up with Duchemin later that night for a date. Here, the story now leaves the confines of Eden and we follow Violette as she gets lost in a mysterious industrial factory on her way to meet Duchemin. The line between reality and fantasy begins to blur as Violette thinks she is being stalked by her friends, who later claim to have been in Eden all night. She takes them back to the factory to show them the dead body of Duchemin, which she had found earlier, but that also has disappeared. Finally, a rare piece of art is stolen from Violette (her only possession), and that, along with a bloody postcard found in the dead man’s pocket, sends Violette on a long, strange journey in Tunisia (the dominant setting for the film’s second half), where she will eventually be kidnapped and tortured by Arabs for reasons that become increasingly muddled, as the narrative slowly begins to dissolve into a series of abstract and symbolic surrealist imagery that steadily becomes more and more difficult to decode.

There is not terribly much written online about this film; but the handful of pieces I was able to dig up all seem to at least acknowledge the theory that I had formed around two-thirds of the way through; that the second half of the film (or likely everything after Violette takes the powder drug) is an intense hallucinogenic trip inside the characters head. The strongest hint of this is in the way that many of the minor actions and events that take place in the first section of the film (in Eden), seem to play out on a much grander scale in the Tunisia section. A play the students concocted earlier, involving poisoned water, replays as Violette escapes her Arab kidnappers; the important painting of a white and blue building – the one that’s stolen from Violette and prompts her trip – seems to manifest itself in the architecture of the Tunisian city; and the wild dance Violette performs while on the drug in Eden is performed once again, this time in an extended scene set against a bonfire near the ocean to tribal music and clapping locals, the primitive, uninhibited flailing of Violette suggesting a mind and soul free of baggage.

The first change in setting after Violette takes the powder drug in Eden is to the ominous factory she becomes lost in; the cold blues of the lonesome machinery provide a chilling atmosphere that overwhelms Violette with trepidation, and could easily represent anxiety from her hallucinogenic trip settling in. Could the character of Duchemin possibly represent the ego? Only after his apparent death is Violette able to flee the gloomy, alarming factory setting to the serene expanse of the Tunisian landscape, where she is confronted by both sexual and philosophical obstacles, and ultimately liberated from both her physical and metaphysical bindings. And one of the final scenes in the film depicts a mysterious meeting between Violette and her double, whom she makes out with and gently caresses as she says cryptically in voice-over, “I found the sea again”: a possible illustration that the Violette character has ended her journey with some kind of epiphany of the self; the type of profound self-realization that often accompanies an intense psychedelic experience. And indeed the precise nature of Violette’s journey is one of the most resoundingly mysterious questions left in the air by the end; however whether her journey is on a physical, metaphysical or mental level may be besides the point. Possibly all that matters is that we understand Violette has undergone a deeply transformative experience. But even a pessimistic coda set back in the domains of Eden seems to possibly suggest that it may have all been for naught.

The fascinating thing here is that I somehow have a feeling that another viewing of Eden and After may very well yield an entirely different line of speculation from me, so complex and sinuous is its elliptical narrative. And while it’s certainly plausible that this movie is a puzzle whose pieces simply aren’t made to fit together, my initial reaction is that Robbe-Grillet has crafted an aesthetically and thematically rich and dense work that is imminently re-watchable, one resplendent with symbolism and sensual beauty, one that manages to deftly balance out its dark, haunting elements with a wicked sense of humor and a rambunctious, playful spirit. There is a sharp eye and a crafty, restless mind at work here, and it’s the kind of cinema I thrive on. If, like me, you love Last Year at Marienbad and are interested in viewing some of Alain Robbe-Grillet’s work as a director, then let it be said – Eden and After is a trip worth taking.
