Long story short, my Hello Kitty humidifier kicked it. I emailed the company asking for a replacement, and they said sure — all I have to do is cut off the cord to the humidifier and send it to them (to protect them from scammers, I imagine). I emailed back and asked if I could take a video of me cutting off the cord, instead of having to buy a mailer, pay for postage, and hardest of all: lug my baby through the sloshy streets to the post office.

I figured there was about a 25% chance of them saying yes. If I was right that they wanted the cord as proof that the humidifier was not going to be used again, a video should do it. That being said, I could imagine a company having a rigid policy that didn’t allow for anything but what they’d stipulated. or they required the cord for some other reason.

I was pleased to get a response saying they’d be happy to accept a video, as long as I made sure the whole humidifier was in the shot. Easy peasy with my Mac computer. 80 is napping, so I just shot the video, edited out the end where I lunge for the pause button (once an AV geek, always an AV geek), uploaded it to Youtube for your enjoyment, and blogged this all in about 15 minutes.

The nine firefighters that call Station 4 of the Poudre Fire Authority their second home, are celebrating being green, by nationally recognized standards.

The $4.5 million project, completed in January, received the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Gold approval earlier this month. LEED certification is decided on a point scale.

Patrick Love, captain of PFA’s Public Affairs and Education, said the USGBC looks for qualities like energy saving, water efficiency, CO2 emission reduction, improved indoor environmental quality and stewardship of resources.

“They look for how your site is going to be sustainable and how it will protect the environment,” said Bob Poncelow, PFA battalion chief and project manager.

The old firehouse, Love said, was bought in the 1980s and intended to be temporary headquarters, with 3,120 square feet of space.

“Basically we bought a single family home and built a really big garage and called it a fire station,” Poncelow said. “It was a temporary solution to provide fire protection for the southwest part of town.”

The new station, located at 1945 W. Drake Road, is just more than 15,000 square feet.

“That space will allow us to grow the station,” Love said. In the strategic plan, Station 4’s goal is to be a two-company station, with an engine company to put out the fires and a rescue company for building ventilation and searches.

The LEED certification, Love said, fits in with the environmental goals of the city of Fort Collins and its citizens and also helps provide a healthy work environment for firefighters, who normally work 24-hour shifts.

Some of the features that helped achieved LEED recognition include fluorescent light fixtures to cut down on light pollution, low flow faucets, toilets and urinals, radiant floor heaters and environmentally sustainable landscape.

PFA is working with the town of Timnath, which is located east of Fort Collins on the other side of Interstate-25, to acquire land for another fire station, Love said. the project is in its “preliminary stages” and hoped to be completed on a five-year timeline.

Animals move in first, but sometime next week the new Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter, will open in Riverside.

Critters will be moved into the new Van Buren Boulevard facility Saturday from the old shelter on Wilderness Avenue, according to the Riverside County Department of Animal Services.

Officials said the 12-acre, 67,000-square-foot shelter will begin operating Monday with a grand opening and Adopt-a-Pet-thon on May 8.

One of the facility’s features is a $2.5 million heating and air-conditioning system that will keep the animals comfortable year round. The system uses fresh air — not recycled — to assist in keeping animals healthier. The new shelter also includes an animal control truck receiving bay.

It is designed to handle four trucks at a time. Officials said officers were forced to line up single file at the old shelter, causing some officers to get caught up in a traffic jam.

The facility also has seven after-hours, drop-off compartments. Officials said they are for people who find an animal when the shelter is closed, but cannot take the stray home because they have their own pets. Animals dropped off in those compartments will be processed early in the morning when staff members arrive.

The shelter will serve western Riverside County and the city of Riverside. The city contracts with Riverside County Animal Services for its animal control and sheltering needs.
