Veterans kick off Catholic Schools Week at MMR

February 7th, 2011

Students at Mary, Mother of the Redeemer School kicked off Catholic Schools Week with some special visitors.Veterans of wars spanning most of the 20th century and all of the 21st spoke to students throughout the school, sharing their experiences in service to their country.“This is the Combat Infantry badge, and below it is our Presidential Unit Citation. Our division won that award on Dec. 6, 7 and 8 of 1944 for the good work we did in a town called Celles in eastern France, in Alsace,” said World War II veteran Ralph Cartwright.a Lansdale native, Cartwright told several classes about how he enlisted in the Army after graduating from Philadelphia’s LaSalle High School in 1943, and after 13 weeks of basic training was on his way to fight in Europe, rising to the rank of first sergeant by the time his division was caught in the Battle of the Bulge in late 1944.Cartwright told about his time in the European theater, a lengthy sail from Italy through Gibraltar and through the Panama Canal toward Japan after combat in Europe ended, and a stay in the Philippines when Japan surrendered, before describing his education via the G.I. bill after the war.Cartwright pointed out and explained the various medals he had won during his service — and helping hold those medals was his grandson Marc Ercoloni, a student at MMR.“It’s like something out of a book in my life now. I’m in my late 80s, your grandfathers’ age, and I thank the good Lord for the life I’ve had. most of it has been excellent, but some of it has been tough, but that’s life,” he said.just down the hall, Navy Commander Ron Coleman of Chalfont spoke of his nine years on active duty and nine years in the Navy Reserves, including a stint stationed in Iraq from April 2008 through January ‘09.Besides active duty deployments in Iraq for both Desert Storm and Shield and Operation Iraqi Freedom, Coleman spent time helping with disaster relief logistics at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba after the Haiti earthquake of January 2010, and assisting with Operation Eastern Exit from Somalia in early 1991.“The most rewarding things we did were those kinds of humanitarian operations, where you’re really saving lives,” Coleman said.“The other thing I told them is that the school and the prep classes sent us packages — Christmas cards and thank you notes — and I said, ‘We keep those, it really does mean a lot when you guys do all of those projects,’” he said. And in another classroom, police officer and U.S. State Department contractor Harry Vitello talked about helping educate police trainees in Afghanistan — and as he spoke, shared souvenirs with the class, including an Afghan hat, shirt and pants, a piece of lapis bought at a bazaar, and a textured stick used as a toothbrush.“This is their traditional dress, but I do not recall the name of this traditional dress because we just called it ‘man jammies,’” said Vitello.“And I couldn’t believe it myself, but since they have no running water, they use this, and sell this stick to brush their teeth. They would gnaw on the end of it to make it soft and that’s what they use,” he said.“I hope I showed you something about Afghanistan, and hopefully you have a new appreciation for the country we live in, because it really is the greatest country in the world,” he said.

Sailor identified in fatal collision

OCEANSIDE, Calif. — A sailor riding a bicycle died from injuries after he was struck by a vehicle Tuesday evening at Camp Pendleton, Calif., officials said.

Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class (FMF/SW) Jackson Cone, 27, of Beaverton, Ore., was pedaling south along Vandegrift Boulevard shortly after 5 p.m. when he was hit by a Honda Odyssey sport utility vehicle that was also traveling south, said 2nd Lt. Rebecca Burgess, a 1st Marine Logistics Group spokeswoman. Cone was taken by medical helicopter to Scripps La Jolla Hospital in San Diego but died of blunt force injuries about 11:20 p.m., according to the San Diego County medical examiner’s office.

No charge was filed against the driver, but the Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating the accident, and the command is conducting a safety investigation, Burgess said.

Cone, who was married, was assigned to 1st Medical Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment, at the base, she said. He enlisted in 2005 and deployed to Iraq from August 2008 to April 2009. His military awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

Navy Rifle Marksmanship Ribbon – My Military Medals

April 3rd, 2010

A Marksmanship Ribbon is awarded by the Air Force, the Navy and the Coast Guard to service who pass a weapons qualification course and achieve an above-average score.  The Navy established two marksmanship ribbons in 1920: one named the Navy Pistol Marksmanship Ribbon and the other called the Navy Rifle Marksmanship Ribbon.  The pistol ribbon is currently awarded for qualification on the 9mm Beretta M9 pistol, and the rifle ribbon is awarded for qualification on the M-16 semi-automatic rifle.  The Navy issues these military awards in three rankings: Marksman, Sharpshooter and Expert.  These military ribbons are presented as a plain ribbon for Marksman qualification, with the Marksmanship Device added to denote Sharpshooter or Expert status.

In 1969 the Navy also began issuing military medals called the Navy Marksmanship Medal to personnel that qualify as Expert with either the M-16 semi-automatic rifle or the 9mm Beretta M9 pistol.  To qualify at the expert level, a superior score must be obtained on an approved weapons qualification course. The standard weapons qualification course normally consists of several courses of fire from one handed kneeling, double handed standing, and (in the case of the M16), firing from a crouched position. A superior score, qualifying for the Marksmanship Medal, is typically 285 points out of a 300 point scale. This varies slightly depending on the awarding authority and the military command which is running a particular qualification course.

The Marksmanship Medal is worn as a full sized medal, on a dress uniform, but when worn on a duty uniform the award is displayed as the standard Marksmanship Ribbon with and Expert Device.  In the U.S. Navy, the Marksmanship Medal is considered a successor decoration to the Distinguished Marksmanship Ribbon. This award was discontinued in 1960 and had been declared obsolete by 1965.  The Marksmanship Medal is the equivalent of the Expert Marksmanship Badge in the Army and the Marine Corps.

Navy Rifle Marksmanship Ribbons and Navy Pistol Marksmanship Ribbons are worn below the ROK War Service Medal and above the Nato Medal in the order of precedence for all Navy medals and ribbons.  These Navy medals and ribbons are available in traditional full size medals, mini-medals, and custom thin mini-medals as well as in slide-on on ribbons and the newer, custom thin ribbons currently gaining widespread popularity for their sleeker appearance.
