As Jacaranda 94.2′s Dewald Noel puts it, only Adam Levine from Maroon 5 can make “Misery” sound like such a jovial place to be. Maroon 5 is back with their 3rd full studio album after 2007′s “It won’t be soon before long.” And first single “Misery” is already a firm favourite on SA radio as everyone who has ever gone through a major break-up relates with the sentiments of having written 200 letters that never got sent. Okay, maybe 200 is a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the picture.

At least “Misery” is not a prophetic prediction or indication of the 13 songs on the album… although their cover version of Queen’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” sounds a bit like something you can catch down at the local Barnyard. As for the other 12 songs, it’s a fair mix of what Maroon 5 does best… innocent, bowl you over, rich in harmony songs that if you leave the CD player on repeat, you will not notice the CD started playing from the first track again. The theme of love lost seems to flow throughout the album with “Get back in my life” one of the other stand-out tracks.

Current darlings of the music world, Lady Antebellum, join Levine and the guys on “Out of goodbyes” for a “If Maroon 5 was a country band this is what they would sound like” collaboration. “Stutter” is so bloody catchy, you’ll find yourself “whoa-ing” throughout the next two songs. Song title of the year so far belongs to “Never gonna leave this bed,” not an anthem for S & M lovers where people are being left tied to the bed posts, but rather a song of declaration. You really have to love someone if they wake you up in the middle of the night just to tell you “I will never ever walk away again, I’m never gonna leave this bed” and you don’t suffocate them slowly with the pillow. Lekker song. Great lyrics. Catchy beat. Maroon 5.

Somewhere in 2008, Levine stated that he believes the band is reaching its peak and may make one more album before disbanding. He explained “Eventually I want to focus on being a completely different person because I don’t know if I want to do this into my 40s and 50s and beyond, like the Rolling Stones. If this is that “one more album,” it’s a fairly good way to end. But let’s hope it’s not good-bye. Maybe Levine has had a change of heart. Otherwise fans might just find themselves experiencing some misery.
