Beginner Guitar Lessons and Practice

April 16th, 2010

As we all know, if you want to learn how to play the guitar with skill and fluency, you must practice consistently. Consistent practice allows you to get a better overall feel for the guitar and the music being played.

So if you must practice consistently, how long and how frequent should each practice session be? Although there is no perfect answer to this question, many people have found that practicing for an hour every day allows them to make steady progress.

If you are really looking to aspire to great heights in the guitar playing world, then the more practice the better. Many of the top guitarists today sometimes practiced for 8 hours a day. The more you practice, the faster you will learn.

However, make sure that when you practice, that you practice performing each component correctly. Don’t just progress leaving a load of mistakes trailing behind you. Make sure you practice almost perfecting each aspect of playing the guitar before you move on to learn the next lesson or aspect of playing the guitar.

Why do you have to master something before moving on? Well, if you keep making mistakes consistently in the early stages of learning how to play the guitar, these mistakes will become bad habits which will be quite hard to unlearn in the future. So make sure that you make your practice perfect practice.

You can always imagine playing the guitar perfectly in your mind. By doing this, you train your mind and your body to respond in accordance with what you are visualizing in your mind.

At first, playing the guitar may feel unnatural to you. Many people find using the left hand uncomfortable in the initial stages. The left hand does a lot of work on the fret board which seems to be an awkward position for people just starting out learning the guitar.

As well as the left arm feeling uncomfortable moving around the fret board in the early stages of learning the guitar, the strings burn and cut into the fingertips. After a while people become used to how to correctly move their left hand and position their finger on the fret board and their fingertips become hardened in next to no time. Many guitarists refer to this as having guitar fingers.

If you plan on practicing guitar by playing loudly, wear a pair of ear plugs to prevent any permanent damage to your ear drums, as the ear drums are very delicate. This goes for practicing in your home or if you are performing on stage.
