Hiew Chok Sien's Blog: dream catcher

April 12th, 2010

Today Chen Rui saw a spider outside the house and was afraid of it. She told Michelle about it, and Michelle told her that the spider was outside and there was nothing to be afraid of. To Michelle’s surprise, Shee Yun asked her to bring the spider into the house. Shee Yun explained that she wanted the spider to make her a dream catcher, which would take away her bad dreams. A eream catcher, if I am not mistaken, is a traditional Red Indian ornament / mythical tool which can capture bad dreams. It has a web in the middle and is decorated with dangling feathers. Shee Yun saw a TV program about dream catchers. Recently she has indeed waken up in the night because of bad dreams. So she thought of using a dream catcher. Maybe we can make her one ourselves.

In the evenings I usually make Shee Yun some milk before she sleeps. I always ask her whether she wanted a lot, a little, or just a moderate amount (??????????). Most of the time she tells me half a bottle (??), and holds out her two hands horizontally one above the other as if measuring the depth of the milk. So I normally make her milk using 140ml of water (usually meant for 3.5 scoops of milk powder) and 3 scoops of milk powder. I make it slightly diluted so that it is not so “heaty” (??). I think the Wyeth milk powder company rep advised this which Michelle asked her.

Today Shee Yun asked for milk again. When Chen Rui heard that, she said to me she wanted to eat milk powder. I told her no, because it was bed time, and if she ate milk powder this late, she would cough in the night. Then to my surprise, she said she wanted to drink milk. She even said “??”. I didn’t believe her. I think she was just imitating Shee Yun. But I still made some milk for her – 80ml (meant for 2 scoops) and 1.5 scoops of milk powder. I was cautious. I asked her repeatedly that she indeed wanted to drink milk, and every time she confirmed so. When she started drinking I was still a little wary, because she seemed to be taking small sips, and then taking the bottle teat out of her mouth to examine the milk in the bottle, before resuming drinking. Thankfully she eventually finished the milk, although she took longer than Shee Yun.

This is a good beginning. I hope she continues to drink milk.

Today Michelle asked Chen Rui a question starting with “????… “. Instead of replying “?…”, Chen Rui replied, “?… “.

3 Apr 2010. Playing with bicycles.

They still like to ask me to pretend to be a toll booth, and when they use their imaginary Touch & Go cards to go beep, I lift my arm to let them through.
