Mavs stun Deer Park with first-ever victory – Houston Community Newspapers: Sports

February 13th, 2011

What happens when you take a basketball player who had thedouble-double of 36 points and 11 rebounds plus five assists andfour steals out of a game’s equation?

You get a big, big upset never before seen in these parts.

Memorial High School’s varsity boys basketball programcelebrated its first-ever victory over Deer Park Friday night, following a 46-39 decision at Cotton Watkins Gymnasium.

Forty-eight days after Deer Park defeated Memorial 63-49 in theCCISD Classic behind Thomas Walkup’s 36-point explosion, the Mavsregistered what legitimately could be the program’s biggestdistrict victory since it began in 2004.

Over the last three seasons, Deer Park owned a 29-1 recordagainst PISD teams, but the 0-2 Mavericks pulled the rug out fromunder the maroon and gold by taking advantage of anothercold-shooting effort on Deer Park’s part.

Memorial’s upset is the first win by a PISD team at CottonWatkins Gym since the 2007 district race.

Just as in last month’s game, Memorial’s Brady Toler led theMavs attack, scoring 11 points in just 16 minutes of work. JohnBautista contributed eight points and seven boards and ByronTerrell finished with seven points, four assists and threesteals.

“”I was just really proud of our kids. We lost a close game toRayburn and had a hard game with Dobie. our kids had greatpreparation coming into the Deer Park game and they performed well.they struggled shooting the ball from the perimeter. (Darian) Banksis so tough so we had to surround him and have a team effortdefensively. our kids executed our game plan really well,” Memorialhead coach David Bosley said Saturday.

Banks, who didn’t play in the earlier meeting with Memorial, wasnearly a one-man show. he scored 21 of the team’s 39 points on10-of-21 shooting. But when he popped out from behind the 3-pointarc, he was scoreless, misfiring on nine tries.

Deer Park was a horrendous 1-of-26 in shooting the 3s to go with8-of-15 from the foul line and 15-of-48 overall from the floor.

“We played zone most of the game,” Bosley said. “We tried to bequick early to spots to keep Darian Banks from getting too low, getting in position. The other guys, if their man didn’t have theball they were going to try and help squeeze the passing lanes tomake it tough to get the ball to Darian. if he or big Dennis(Lawton) got the ball too deep, they were going to score. They’rejust too big and too strong.”

Jeremy Dockan and Cody Meek combined for 13 points. Dockan hadthe team’s only bonus bucket as those two were 1-for-13 from the3s.

Memorial only attempted eight 3-point goals, sinking three. Frominside the arc, the Mavs were 13-of-25.
