timesofmalta.com!car fridges?I am in complete agreement with Saviour Attards observations regarding negligence towards our environment (Road Construction Waste In Xlendi Valley? December 10).
I have lived on Gozo for only three months? yet in this short time I have seen an island spoiled by discarded rubbish. it is everywhere? around the Victoria bus terminus area? in fields? along roadsides and at tourist sites such as Dwejra and Xlendi.
All this is seen by tourists as they travel about and must give a bad impression of Gozo. People very often keep their house fronts immaculate but ignore rubbish close to where they live. Much of this ends up being spread around the countryside or gets washed into the sea via the wadis. In these three months I have collected over 40 sacks of waste just in my own locality? mostly from the seashore.
Gozo is a beautiful island but is spoilt by this endless tide of rubbish thrown from cars or dumped from some building sites. Sadly? this is also a worldwide problem but if it cannot be dealt with on a small island such as this what hope is there?
We have anti-litter laws but these are a waste of time if not strictly enforced. What is needed are strong environment protection laws and authorities given the ability to enforce them strongly? or doesnt anybody care about their surroundings?

Mr. Sharp? I agree with you? but next time try to publish your letters in the weekend s? because the Minister for Gozo only reads the news s on weekends. This is how the Ministry is informed on what goes on in Gozo.
Was it not about 5or 6 years ago that we were informed that Green Wardens were to be employed to fine people throwing rubbish into the streets? What happened to this suggestion? was it too radical an idea for Maltese to contemplate? why are Buiders still allowed to leave piles of rubble in the streets under the eyes of the Police & Traffic Wardens ? do Mayors & Councillors really not care if piles of rubbish prevent people from walking along Pavements ? because its always been that way in Malta malta is the dirtiest island in Europe for sure. QED.
I sadly must agree with you. I lived in Malta and have visited Gozo many times. I have returned to the States and hope that one day I can reside in Gozo again. while in the States I have told so may Americans how beautiful and lovely your country is not to mention the finest people in the world. last month I had some friends visit Malta and Gozo and when they returned they commented on how dirty it was….I was very sad that they saw the rubbish and they over looked the rest of the beauty. I believe that you are the kindest nation in the world and I hope that Malta and Gozo will be able to clean up the rubbish. I dearly love both islands. Respectfully? Katherine Maring
Max Sharp is right in what he says. of course littering is a worldwide problem and each locality deals with it as best they can but as Max says if it cant be tackled on a small island like Gozo what hope is there for the rest of the world? the thing is the litter problem is mainly a local problem. I have never seen a tourist dropping litter and in ct they will usually go out of their way to find a bin. Yet when you drive around Gozo you find little dumps of rubbish along the roadside? which contains items of large household waste. At Xlendi where Max lives I even have photographs of rubbish including a fridge dumped in the sea.
Certain localities have road sweepers who do a good job. a perfect example would be John better known as Bob Marley who cleans up around Independence Square or It-Tokk area of Victoria. the island needs more people like John.

Max Sharp there are many areas in the UK that look like a rubbish dump. everyone who lifts his arms have something to smell.
No it doesnt it reflects the people who live in it – the Maltese citizens. the Maltese seem to care the least about their environment compared to the rest of Europe when in ct they should care the most since Malta is the smallest and most densely populated nation.
At least underthe current government actions have taken place to clean up the countryside and sewage outlets. However? its the Maltese people who are the source of the problem and it is they who need to take real action.
Have you ever seen a Maltese citizen pick up a single piece of litter in a public place when theyre not paid to do so? I never have.
Its a case of selfishness ? greed and a short term view on everything in their lives.
Pawlu Scicluna: Grow up.
Im glad mr Sharp pointed it out and thanks for going the extra mike to collect the 40 sacks of rubbish.
Mr Scicluna – it is sad to hear that because someone is saying the truth and because this someone happened to be a foreigner? than we are trying to justify ourselves by pointing out that even in his country there is a lot of places full of litter.
A case of two wrongs doesnt make a right!!!
A typical Maltese reaction… when will they ever learn to be able to accept cirticism.? i know i am MALTESE by birth but now learned to accept such comments and thats how i learned to correct myself and advance further injhto the future and not the past. a.Farrugia Sydney
Pawlu? if Max Sharp is a permanent resident in Malta? he has the right to complain as much as the Maltese do.
What I dont like is when foreigners denigrate Malta and/or Gozo or when they over do it with their excessive complaints or condemnation.
C Cassar what proof is there that the rubbish that Max has collected was deposited by the Maltese or Gozitans and not by tourists and other settlers? and is it not true that every country there are areas that looks like a rubbish dump? have you ever been to the African and certain other quarters in Brussels? Paris and other European Cities? I suggest that if you havent go have a look. you will be amazed.
Pehaps its you who should grow up Andrew Calleja. since when it is acceptable for a foreigner to denigrate your country and people and you say thank you and not point out that this also happens in his own country?
Saying This is Malta is exactly the attitude that manifests the problems. Whats wrong with the Maltese that they have such filthy habits? Surely by now many have travelled to other parts of Europe and see how clean cities and countryside can be? Wht dont the Maltese want this for their islands? why dont the Maltese lift a finger themselves to help keep the place clean? why do they always blame someone else such as the authorities? builders? car drivers? teenagers? these people are the Maltese.
Not only in Malta as people say. we have litter-louts in droves here in the U.K.
The only answer is a harsh implementation of litter fines- how about a hundred Euro for starters for anyone droppong litter in Malta and Gozo? it would be Pounds here- even better!
People litter all over the world? including in Malta.
Many people pick up after litter bugs? including in Malta.
Authorities enforce litter laws all over the world? except in Malta.
