Replacement Furniture Cushions – 6 Reasons You Could Do With a Change

April 6th, 2010

Has your old outdoor furniture seen better days? Are you embarrassed to take your guests outside because of the dated decor? More importantly, did you realize your old patio setting could be affecting your health? There are many reasons why you may need to use replacement furniture cushions.

1. Flattening

If you patio cushions are more than 10 years old, or are no longer providing support, then you definitely could do with replacement furniture cushions. Old cushions, or poorly kept cushions, can appear ‘flattened’ and rounded on the edges. This is a definite giveaway the foam is either too old, or need of replacement.

2. Mildew

Outdoor furnishings have tendency to attract mold and mildew. Over time, dust, food particles, and moisture, make the perfect environment for mold spores to grow. If your patio cushions are showing signs of mildew, then it may be time to consider new ones. When selecting your new replacement furniture cushions, be sure they are mold resistant.

3. Allergies

Your outdoor furniture is a potential breeding ground for allergens and pests. Dust that collects both indoors and outdoors is usually a mixture of fungal spores, pet dander, soil, and human hair and skin. What is more, dust can also act as a vehicle for dangerous toxic chemicals.

One type of toxic chemical typically found in household dust is PBDEs. Used as a flame-retardant, you can find them in a large variety of everyday household products, including outdoor furniture. To safeguard your exposure to dangerous PBDEs, check any foam products manufactured between 1970 and 2005. In addition, be sure to replace any old or ripped foam covers, such as chair cushions or upholstered furniture, which have a high risk of containing PBDEs
