    G50: Series Silverstone preview

    September 5th, 2010

Breezing away in the Michelin Ginetta G50 Cup

Carl Breeze is using his many years of experience to good use in theMichelin Ginetta G50 Cup, as the championship heads to Silverstone thisweekend.

Breeze (King’s Lynn) is beginning to assert himself in the MichelinGinetta G50 Cup, with seven wins in 17 races and an advantage of 18points over his nearest rival. It isn’t a massive gap, but every littlehelps in the competitive world of Ginetta racing. Breeze, who was racingin single-seaters on the TOCA package over a decade ago, has learnt manya trick over the years and is putting that to good use as he tries toclinch the crown, his nearest rival Frank Wrathall being much lessexperienced – he only began car racing in 2007!

Breeze didn’t score his first win until round five at Rockingham (thefirst three races all falling to guest driver Rob Huff) but since then hehas rarely been off the podium. Any ghosts from last year (like hisaccident at Oulton Park and duff tyre choice here) look to be well andtruly laid to rest.

While Breeze (TCR) wins and racks up points, the pressure is on theDynojet-run Wrathall. Young Frank, whose dad Frank senior is a successfulformer sidecar racer-turned engine wizard, won the third race atSnetterton to bring himself a little closer to Breeze but he needs to wina few more races to narrow the gap. Easier said than done when you add inhis team-mate Adam Morgan who won at Croft and Tom Sharp (IDL) who scoredtwo wins in North Yorkshire. It means that as the championship becomesmore competitive it becomes harder for Wrathall to maintain a place inthe top two of every race.

The championship battle is very much between Breeze and Wrathall butbehind them come individual battles, both for points and race places.Sharp and Morgan should be in the mix this weekend, as should theHetherington brothers, Ben and Freddie, in their Century Motorsport cars.Aaron Williamson (Peterborough Waste Management/FML) has recovered wellfrom a pre-race crash at Oulton Park and took a fourth at Snettertonwhich gave his confidence a boost, while Mark Davies (the reigningGinetta G20 champion) has been closer to the pace of late as well.

Add in the Chairman’s Cup for the over 40s, where multiple Hot Rodchampion Colin White takes on Tony Hughes, and there is no shortage ofgreat racing.

The question is: can Wrathall close the gap to the championship leader orhas Breeze got his second wind?

Qualifying for the Michelin Ginetta G50 Cup takes place at 10.45 onSaturday August 21st with the first 22-lap race that afternoon at 15.40.Race two, also over 22 laps, takes place at 10.10 on Sunday morning.
