New Disney Cruise Ship, Fresh out of German Building Docks

April 21st, 2011

When it comes to Disney cruise ships, the hype builds up long before they start off on their first cruise. Their latest ship, Disney Dream, has made the news for merely making it out of the German shipyard in Papenburg and into a harbor where the final stages of construction and testing will take place. Why so much hype about the Disney Dream? It is the largest ever built in Germany!

Disney Dream is 1,115 feet long, it has 14 decks and hold 4,000 passengers. the cruise ships also features the AquaDuck, a water coaster wrapped around the perimeter of its top deck, virtual portholes offering live views of the sea and sky from video cameras mounted around the ship and a series of lounges for all ages. Quite enough room to meet new people on a Disney cruise, wouldn’t you say?

After the testing is completed and the cruise ship is deemed safe for… floating and not becoming a new Titanic or something, it will start is journey along the River Ems and head to a port in Holland. the ship will get there sometime in November, but the official launch will only take place early next year, on January 26th, in Port Canaveral, Florida. after the launch, passengers of the Disney Dream will indulge in cruises between Florida and the Bahamas.

Disney Dream is only the first of two ships being built n Germany for US-based Disney Cruise Line. the second one, called the Fantasy, is still far from being launched, as it’s scheduled to debut in 2012. the two ships will be added to the existing 2-ship fleet operated by Disney which already includes Disney Magic and Disney wonder.

Community challenge

May 22nd, 2010

GRANTS – Grants Community Pantry Manager Nenderle Houge said, “We are challenging each household in the county to donate one dollar per month to the food pantry.” She explained this is the equivalent of giving up one can of soda per month per household, not per person. The challenge is an opportunity for the community to aid those less fortunate during the present economic crisis.

Currently 1,900 families, with an average size of four per household, use the pantry. The manager pointed out the facility is donation-funded. She expressed appreciation for the 20-plus volunteers who provide the labor for day-to-day operations five days a week. Houge shared her concerns about the future and the pantry’s ability to serve area residents and stated, “We are having to choose between making building repairs and paying our bills. If we don’t pay our utility bills we won’t have electricity and water. Without those we cannot keep our doors open.” Regular expenses include utilities, cleaning supplies and equipment repairs. Periodic closing may be necessary in order to reduce costs, according to the manager.

She listed the most pressing needs: on-going maintenance on the refrigeration units, replacing the building’s back steps, building a handicapped-accessible ramp for the rear entrance, re-modeling a portion of the back entrance for a pick-up truck loading dock, technology upgrades for the office computer and repairs to the large-truck dock area. She noted community members have volunteered the labor but there is no money in the current budget for purchasing the necessary materials.

In 2002 the pantry purchased the East Stephens Avenue building, which became the permanent site. The purchase was made possible through local monetary gifts. Before the storefront became available food distribution was done from trucks in a church parking lot.

The facility serves all of Cibola County. It operates under the auspices of the Gallup food bank, which provides the Grants storefront with building insurance, managerial training, delivery of produce and updates on state and federal regulations.

In 2009 the pantry received a $5,000 Federal Emergency Management Agency grant to purchase emergency food supplies. This year the manager applied for the same grant and is waiting to learn the status of the application.

Residents using the pantry must live in the county, show picture identification and register with the pantry. Eligible residents receive government commodity foods once per month. Participants must meet income guidelines.

Each spring the facility hosts a Fat Tuesday pancake supper benefit. Another fundraiser is the “dollar stretcher” program. The pantry puts together a box with a selection of meats which is sold for $10; the baking box includes all the items needed for breads, muffins, cakes and is sold for $5; the meal kit includes all the ingredients to feed a family of four and is sold for $5. Each box generates a fifty-cent profit. These funds are used to purchase additional food stocks.

During the year civic groups, schools and various businesses host food drives to benefit the pantry. The manager believes eligibility requirements for small business loans often include the applicant’s contributions to the local food bank.

In addition to the storefront’s regular services it supplies elementary children with a “backpack” program. Each week volunteers package up individual ready-to-eat foods for children who may not have meals available over the weekend. The bagged items are delivered to the classrooms on Friday morning.

When available, the pantry provides limited quantities of baby formula and disposable diapers to needy parents.

Houge noted the pantry has been participating in cardboard and plastic-bag recycling for a number of years. Each month preparing commodity food items requires a minimum of 300 boxes. Any unused corrugated cardboard boxes are sold to a buyer and the money is used to stock the pantry’s shelves. She said there is always a need for plastic grocery bags.
