Missed match – but did I miss much?

March 22nd, 2010

Lee Dodgson of Stalybridge and Lee Vaughan of AFC Telford Utd. Picture by James Baylis.

The lure of Dublin for a few pints of Guinness over St Patrick’s Day meant I missed the home double header against Eastwood and Stalybridge – although by all accounts I didn’t miss much, writes AFC Telford blogger Alex James.

Danny Carey-Bertram’s last minute winner salvaged a point against the Badgers before a Kevin O’Connor own goal consigned the Bucks to defeat against Celtic.

The two matches also saw two new debutants (well, it has been a while since a new face) with the acquisition of Mark Beesley in time for the Eastwood match and Matt Blair, who debuted against Stalybridge.

Telford are now winless in six league games and have managed only two goals in that period so again management duo Rob Smith and Larry Chambers tried to freshen up the squad in a bid for points.

Unfortunately the two new faces couldn’t bring about a victory and the Bucks now face another ‘must win’ game against Hyde United on Saturday.

And by the time that match kicks off Telford could be as many as three places and six points off the play-offs.

All the Bucks can do is look for six wins and hope their kinder run in, and the fixture congestion facing other teams, means that 66 points gives them a top five finish.

On a more positive note, at least the future is looking bright for the Bucks. As well as the solid foundations AFC Telford United were founded, and now run on, the club’s youngsters have all but sealed the Midland Floodlit Youth League after a 3-1 win over Sutton Coldfield moved them within a point of the title.

Striker Dave Howarth was among the goals, netting a brace, and he appears the brightest prospect of forcing himself into the first team.

He had a trial with Premier League side Blackburn Rovers earlier in the season, and has been on the bench for the Bucks this year.

But with the all-conquering squad having won 15 of their 16 matches there is plenty more where Haworth has come from.

So while first team matters may not have gone precisely to plan, the future of the club – both on and off the field – looks in very good health.

And in a world of clubs going bust and youth academies being scrapped, at least that is something to be thankful for.

American Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing Due To “Pressurization Problem”

March 22nd, 2010

A rep for the Chicago Dept. of Aviation said a “pressurization problem” was to blame for the American Airlines flight that made an emergency landing at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on Sunday morning.

American Flight 2363 had left O’Hare a little before 10 a.m. on Sunday, en route to the Yampa Valley Airport near Steamboat Springs, CO. However, the plane landed back at O’Hare around 10:30 a.m. because of the pressurization issue. Officials say none of the 119 passengers were injured.

The flight did eventually make its way to Colorado, landing about two hours later than scheduled.

This incident couldn’t come at a worse time for American, who are not only being slapped with (proposed) heavy fines for maintenance issues, but who are also headed toward a possible strike with their flight attendants and ground crews.

Fans Howl for ‘New Moon’ at Riverton Walmart

March 21st, 2010

As a true testament to the Twilight phenomenon, the midnight release of “Twilight Saga: New Moon” drew more than 5,000 people to the Riverton Walmart Supercenter Friday night, all of them clamoring at the door for a chance to brush shoulders with cast members and get their hands on one of the 300 signed special edition DVDs with bonus scenes from “Eclipse,” the third movie in the Twilight saga.

Riverton resident Erin Thompson and her friends Tina Powell and Mindy Pehrson headed the line. A self-proclaimed “Twi-mom,” Thompson said she had been standing in line since noon to snag a signed copy for her “Twilight” memorabilia collection.

“This is nuts, this is so crazy,” Thompson said. “We went to the movie opening and this is the worst it’s ever been.”

Pehrson had also been in line since 12:30 p.m. with her son, James, who said his favorite thing about the series is “how there’s a love triangle between Edward, Bella and Jacob.”

Pehrson said she planned on watching the movie as soon as they get home.

“We are so excited, we can’t wait,” she said. “We’ve watched it on the Internet and we are psyched.”

Scott Trudo, Riverton Walmart general manager, said his staff has been preparing for three weeks for the event and has worked on everything from ordering extra security to getting the games ready.

“It’s been a lot of fun because a lot of the associates here are Twilight fans,” Trudo said, “so they helped design their own shirts and they’re wearing them tonight.”

Trudo said the 1,000 copies of the Walmart exclusive Ultimate Fan Edition are a big draw for the store, which led the nation in “Twilight” DVD sales at the last release.

Three of the cast members slated to make an appearance, Justin Chon (Eric), Michael Welch (Mike) and Christian Serratos (Angela), said they expected the chaos that comes with the supernatural series.

“I would be, frankly, surprised if the DVD release wasn’t just as crazy as every other part of this franchise,” Welch said. “When the books come out it’s a crazy thing, when the movie comes out it’s a crazy thing, when Rob (Pattinson) is on the cover of GQ sales are up 40 percent of any GQ, ever, so I would expect nothing less from these magnificent, crazy, wonderful fans,” he said.

Welch said the cast enjoys getting to meet personally with the fans who have contributed to their success.

“We will be able to shake hands and look in people’s eyes and kiss babies just like we’re running for president,” Welch said. “It’s almost the least we can do; it’s only because of them that this thing is a big deal at all. I’m replaceable, they’re not,” he said.

Women gives birth, wakes up without arms or legs

March 21st, 2010

Posted: 5:59 pm EST January 19,2006Updated: 4:06 pm EST January 20,2006

ORLANDO, Fla. — A Sanford mother says she will never be able to hold her newborn because an Orlando hospital performed a life-altering surgery and, she claims, the hospital refuses to explain why they left her as a multiple amputee. The woman filed a complaint against Orlando Regional Healthcare Systems, she said, because they won’t tell her exactly what happened. The hospital maintains the woman wants to know information that would violate other patients’ rights.Claudia Mejia gave birth eight and a half months ago at Orlando Regional South Seminole. She was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center in Orlando where her arms and legs were amputated. She was told she had streptococcus, a flesh eating bacteria, and toxic shock syndrome, but no further explanation was given. The hospital, in a letter, wrote that if she wanted to find out exactly what happened, she would have to sue them.”I want to know what happened. I went to deliver my baby and I came out like this,” Mejia said.Mejia said after she gave birth to Mathew last spring, she was kept in the hospital with complications. Twelve days after giving birth at Orlando Regional South Seminole hospital, she was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center where she became a quadruple amputee. Now she can not care for or hold her baby.”Yeah, I want to pick him up. He wants me to pick him up. I can’t. I want to, but I can’t,” she said. “Woke up from surgery and I had no arms and no legs. No one told me anything. My arms and legs were just gone.”Her 7-year-old son, Jorge, asks his mother over and over what happened to her. Neither she nor her husband has the answer.”I love her, so I’ll always stick with her and take it a day at a time myself,” said her husband, Tim Edwards. The couple wants to know how she caught streptococcus, during labor or after. She doesn’t know. She knows she didn’t leave the hospital the same.”And why, I want to know why this happened,” she said. Her attorney, Judy Hyman wrote ORHS a letter saying, according to the Florida statute, “The Patients Right To Know About Adverse Medical Incidents Act,” the hospital must give her the records.”When the statute is named ‘Patients Right To Know,’ I don’t know how it could be clearer,” Hyman said. The hospital’s lawyers wrote back, “Ms. Mejia’s request may require legal resolution.” In other words, according to their interpretation of the law, Mejia has to sue them to get information about herself. That’s the sticking point, the interpretation of the Patients Right To Know act, a constitutional amendment Florida voters passed a little more than a year ago.Mejia’s other attorney, E. Clay Parker, said the hospital is not following the law”We were forced to file this and ask a judge to interpret the constitutional amendment and do right,” Parker said.Mejia hopes the right thing is done. She said not knowing exactly why it happened is unbearable. She only hopes she’ll be able to soon answer her little boy’s question, ‘What happened?’”He told me everyday, ‘What happened,’ and I don’t have any answers for that,” she said.ORMC said Mejia is requesting information on if there were other patients or someone on her floor with the streptococcus. They said, if they release that to her, that would be a violation of other patients’ rights.

Ireland 20-23 Scotland: Good things come to those who wait

March 21st, 2010

This was only Ireland’s forth loss at Croke Park and the Scots rained on their parade since Saturday was the day Irish rugby bade an emotional farewell to the old GAA ground that has served them so well these past few years.

Coming at the end of a disappointing season this fabulous win was only Scotland’s second over Ireland in the extended Six Nations, with the last one occurring way in 2001 when the match that was rearranged around the foot and mouth epidemic. Scotland’s only other recent success was a friendly match at Murrayfield ahead of the World Cup of 2007, when Eddie O’Sullivan fielded a weakened team.

Fly-half Dan Parks – you can’t keep him down – won the match for Scotland with a drop goal and five penalties, the last one coming two minutes from time to seal the victory, but once again he showed his Jekyll and Hyde nature. Apart from his crucial contribution with the boot he also stripped Paul O’Connell of the ball just before half time. Against that, the Aussie still has the blinkers on in attack, ignoring overlaps and mismatches galore when Scotland had the whip hand. For all his efforts Parks remains what he always has been, a kicking stand-off, as constant as the north star, take him or leave him.

At least he held his nerve when it mattered most, which is more than his opposite number Johnathan Sexton could manage. The Irish fly-half was kicking 33 per cent ahead of this match so his two from four attempts can’t have taken anyone by surprise yesterday. He was replaced by Ronan O’Gara immediately after his second success around the 50 minute mark.

The veteran’s appearance sparked an immediate Irish fightback after the Scots had opened up a commanding ten-point lead, just as they did in Wales, and they looked like throwing it away for the second time this season. Ten minutes into the second half Sexton’s second penalty narrowed the Scots’ lead to seven, the Croker crowd suddenly found their voice and the Irish pack started to boss the mauls. Tommy Bowe popped up to snatch Ireland’s second try after squeezing into the right hand corner, despite Sean Lamont’s best efforts, and O’Gara stepped up to kick the touchline conversion. Suddenly the match was tied 17-17 apiece with the momentum firmly behind the home team.

Thankfully, the Scots had other ideas. With memories of Cardiff spurring them on, they were determined not to blow it again. Scotland won a free kick at a scrum, Lamont broke up the middle of the park and, not for the first time, the Irish were penalised at breakdown. Parks kicked the 73rd minute penalty. O’Gara responded two minutes later.

The Aussie demanded the final say. Rob Kearney collected Parks’ deep kick to the corner but was penalised for holding on after being collared by Simon Danielli and Nick De Luca. Taken inches from the touchline, and amidst a chorus of jeers and whistles, Parks’ strike dissected the uprights with geometric precision. It may be a while before the Australian fly-half hears anything other than the ringing of cheers at Murrayfield.

It looked a harsh call by referee Jonathan Kaplan but the South African had a huge influence on this game, all for the good. He had been brutally strict at the breakdown all match where he pinged Ireland’s cheating relentlessly. Kaplan also played a decisive role at the set scrum. The Scots had a clear edge and duly won a series of early free kicks and penalties although the referee still bottled his big challenge. When Cian Healy collapsed yet another in a long series of attacking Scottish scrums at the end of the first half Kaplan was busy looking elsewhere.

As well as bossing the scrum, the Scots also filled their boots at the side of the field where the Irish lineout was humbled, humiliated and ritually dismantled in front of a disbelieving crowd. Ahead of yesterday’s encounter the O’Connell/O’Callaghan duo has lost just three of their own throws in all four matches played. Against the Scots the Irish lineout lost seven throws, which says something about the pressure exerted by Al Kellock and Jim Hamilton.

Scotland’s solitary try came courtesy of Johnnie Beattie and, while it was a humdinger, it didn’t distract from the gulf in attacking quality between these two back divisions. Ireland’s three-quarters threatened to break loose almost every time they touched the ball, especially in the opening quarter when Sexton carved out an opening for Brian O’Driscoll to score and never mind that the fly-half final’s pass to his skipper drifted three yards forwards.

After that early setback the Scots needed to make a statement of their own and it was their No.8 who spoke loudest. The Scots won a turnover, the ball went through Kelly Brown and Graeme Morrison before Beattie was asked to finish it off from 20 yards with several green shirts in attendance. He rose to the challenge magnificently, blasting through the flailing tackles of Geordan Murphy and O’Connell before stretching out an arm and dotting down for what was only Scotland’s third try of the championship. Combined with Parks’ contribution, it proved enough on the day.

Dublin is a city that encourages celebration and the Scots didn’t need a second invitation last night. Ireland have been at the pinnacle of European rugby for several years now and to beat them on home soil suggests that the Scots have taken a huge step forwards. Still, the Scots have had false dawns before and Robinson knows better than anyone that this victory only matters if it sparks better things to come.

Ireland: Murphy (Kearney 26 min); Bowe, O’Driscoll, D’Arcy, Earls; Sexton (O’Gara 50 min), O’Leary; Healy, Best, Hayes (Buckley 79 min), O’Callaghan, O’Connell, Ferris, Wallace, Heaslip.

Scotland: Southwell; Lamont (Danielli 73 min), De Luca, Morrison, Evans; Parks, Cusiter; Jacobsen (Dickinson 65 min), Ford (Lawson 71 min), Murray, Hamilton (Grey 52 min), Kellock, Brown, Barclay, Beattie.

Pope addresses Irish Catholics

March 19th, 2010

Vatican City (AsiaNews) – The Pope will sign his letter to the faithful of Ireland March 19, the letter that will address the difficult situation in the Church there in the wake of cases of child abuse that occurred in the past within church structures. Benedict XVI himself announced it today, addressing the faithful of the English language present among the 11 thousand people who attended the general audience. “As you know – he told them – in recent months, the Church in Ireland has been severely shaken by the crisis of child abuse. As a token of my deep concern, I have written a pastoral letter to address this painful situation. I will sign it on the Solemnity of St. Joseph, guardian of the Holy Family and patron of the universal Church, and send it immediately. I ask that you read it yourselves, with an open heart and in a spirit of faith. My hope is that it can help in the process of repentance, healing and renewal. ”

“Theology that is dictated by the love of God,” was instead the subject of Pope Benedicts address to the faithful this week, describing what differentiates and unites two great theologians of the thirteenth century, St. Bonaventure and St. Thomas. The first, a Franciscan theologian speaks of “an arrogant way of doing theology, a pride of reason which places itself above the word of God. Rather true theology, the rational work of true theology has a different origin, not the pride of reason. Those who love want to know better and more their beloved. ”

Then sketching the features of the thought of the two great theologians, Benedict XVI exemplified that for “St. Thomas, the supreme end to which our wish is directed is to see God. In this simple act of seeing God we find solution to all problems: we are happy and nothing else is needed”. “For St. Bonaventure, the ultimate destiny of man is: loving God, to meet and join His love with our love. This is for him is the most appropriate definition of happiness.”. “In this line, we could also say that the highest category for St. Thomas is truth, while for St. Bonaventure it is good.” But “it would be wrong to see a contradiction between the two. “For both the true is also good, and the good is also true; to see God is to love and to love is to see God. These are different accents of a fundamentally common vision. Both accents have formed different traditions and spirituality and so many have shown the fruitfulness of faith, each one in the diversity of its expressions”.

St. Bonaventure, then studying a new translation of Pseudo-Dionysius, the sixth-century Syrian theologian, says that in “the ascent to God you can get to a point where reason no longer sees. But in the intellectual darkness love still sees, it sees all that remains inaccessible to reason. Love is beyond reason; it sees more, goes more deeply into the mystery of God”. “In the dark night of the Cross, the greatness of divine love; where reason no longer sees, love sees.” “This is not anti-intellectual and is not anti-rational: it presupposes the path of reason, but transcends it in the love of Christ crucified. With this transformation of the mystic of Pseudo-Dionysius, St. Bonaventure places himself at the beginning of a great mystical current, which has elevated and purified the human mind: it is a summit in the history of the human spirit. ”

In conclusion, Benedict XVI said that for St. Bonaventure “our whole life is a journey, a pilgrimage, an ascent to God. But using our own forces he ended – we can not arrive at the height of God, God must help, he must ‘pull us’ upwards. This is why we need prayer. Prayer, the saint would say, is the mother and the origin of elevation, an action that leads us upwards on high”.

Zoned, out: Loss tough to take for Irish, Harangody

March 19th, 2010

SOUTH REGIONAL | OLD DOMINION 51, NOTRE DAME 50

Playing in the first round of the NCAA South Regional on Thursday at New Orleans Arena, Notre Dame went a critical 5:59 of the second half without scoring and fell to Old Dominion 51-50.

Against changing zone defenses, Notre Dame never found its groove in the second half. Star forward Luke Harangody, saddled with two early fouls, missed his first seven shots and made his only two baskets in the last 12 seconds.

”That 3-2 zone,” Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said. ”Every time [we] caught it, someone was right there. It destroyed our rhythm. We didn’t make shots that we usually do. I still can’t believe we lost. I give a lot of credit to Old Dominion and the way they played. They made veteran plays at key times.”

When Harangody went down with a deep bone bruise in his right knee Feb. 12, it was feared the the school’s No. 2 all-time scoring leader (behind Austin Carr) was finished. But the 6-8 senior forward returned March 6 at Marquette. He starred in his new role of coming off the bench. He played between 22 and 26 minutes in Notre Dame’s three games in the Big East tournament last week, and scored in double figures in all three games.

”It was tough for him,” Brey said. ”Luke got two early fouls and could never really get into a flow. And the new [style] we are playing makes it hard against a zone like that. Also, when you’re playing against zone for long periods of time, it’s a little harder to establish him offensively.”

Asked Wednesday about his decision to come back for his senior year, Harangody said: ”I’m very happy I stayed. I wouldn’t change it for anything.”

A tip-in by Tory Jackson with 7:48 left gave Notre Dame (23-12) a 43-40 lead. But the Irish missed their next six shots and committed a turnover before tying the score at 46 on a three-pointer by Carleton Scott with 1:49 left.

Old Dominion’s Gerald Lee made a jumper. He also made the first of two free throws 31 seconds later to put the Monarchs ahead for good. After Harangody made a layup, two free throws by Keyon Carter put Old Dominion up 51-48 with nine seconds left. A three-pointer by Scott rimmed out with two seconds left, and Harangody put it back in at the buzzer.

The Irish, who made 6 of 26 three-pointers, were led by Ben Hansbrough with 17 points. Scott had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Frank Hassel scored 15 and Carter 11 for Old Dominion (27-8), which will face Baylor on Saturday.

The Irish led 30-22 after a basket by Scott nine seconds into the second half, but the Monarchs answered with a 9-0 run to go ahead 31-30 with 14:24 left.

Brey said he would wait to speak to his seniors until the team arrived back at its hotel.

”There is a lot of emotion,” Brey said. ”When you invest, like those guys have invested in our basketball program, man, it comes crashing down. Also, when you’ve been on a run like us and it comes to a stop, you’re coming from way up high. For everybody, this tournament ends so fast.

”When Jackson and Harangody showed up on our campus, the climate changed in our locker room. We got tougher. We believed more. … They’ve been great ambassadors for our program and our university.”

CBO Expects Treasury to Use Just $20B of TARP to Mitigate Foreclosures

March 19th, 2010

results. They now say that up to 4 million borrowers could qualify for a HAMP trial, after which servicers will determine if they are eligible for permanent assistance.

According to the CBO, through January 2010, the Treasury had disbursed a total of $31 million to HAMP servicers in the form of incentive payments.

The office notes that another $1.5 billion in TARP funds is currently slated to provide direct grants to state housing agencies in California, Arizona, Nevada, Michigan, and Florida to develop their own mortgage assistance programs based on local needs as a supplement to HAMP.

CBO’s latest report puts the final price tag for all TARP programs – including bank and corporate bailouts and private investment partnerships, as well as foreclosure mitigation programs – at $109 billion. That’s about $10 billion more of taxpayers’ money than the agency’s earlier estimate in January.

Much of that estimated cost is associated with the assistance provided to American International Group (AIG) – at a cost of about $36 billion – and the automotive industry-at a cost of about $34 billion. The government’s bailouts of banks, on the other hand, are expected to yield a profit of about $7 billion, CBO said.

CBO’s cost projection for TARP is lower than estimates published by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), which puts the total cost of TARP transactions at $127 billion.

According to a statement from the CBO director, OMB’s estimate is $18 billion higher because of differences in their calculations of the cost of assistance to AIG and in the amount expected to be disbursed under HAMP.

Of the $700 billion authorized under the TARP umbrella, CBO estimates that $344 billion is outstanding or will be disbursed before the program expires on October 3, 2010.

A separate study conducted by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and cited by the Washington Post shows that more than 10 percent to TARP recipients with debt outstanding failed to pay the government a quarterly dividend last month. The Post quoted the report as concluding the missed payments mean the government “probably extended TARP too far.”
