City of Lindsay Antagonists
I am writing in reference to the misinformation being reported by some in the City of Lindsay.
I am a sports dad and coach who has utilized McDermont for hosting tournaments and playing in leagues for several years. We regularly utilize many of the other fine things the City of Lindsay has to offer. Also, I personally know a couple of Council Members and several staff members with the City of Lindsay. I am really frustrated by the fact that the whole story is not being told in the City of Lindsay.
All those who I associate with are in support of the City of Lindsay and the tremendous efforts they have made in revitalizing that City. Living in Porterville, we wish we were able to accomplish some of the same feats. Lindsay’s aggressiveness and forward thinking has moved the City so far forward in just eight short years. What I am most frustrated about is that a very few, very vocal critics seems to get so much air and print time. This loud and obnoxious minority likes to play to the cameras, disrupt meetings, has no interest in answers and generally also has no interest in building a community.
I don’t know these critics personally but I know who they are. These critics suggest wrongdoing, favoritism, wasting taxpayer dollars, and so on. So, in an effort to find out perhaps what their agendas are, I did several public records requests on three primary individuals who seemed to be the most vocal: Delma Mecum of Tienken Realty, Yolanda Flores, proprietor of Stickers (a local Lindsay business) and Timothy Daubert.
Delma Mecum is on record claiming favoritism, monies going only to friends of the city. Interesting claim but factually inaccurate. Just in her name representing Tienken Realty, there have been 29 first time homebuyer direct city loans totaling $2,604,995.61. That’s $2.6 million in direct city assistance to homebuyers she has represented. Total value of $4.8 million when you combine city assistance with bank loans. Tienken Realty as a whole has received for its customers over $3.3 million in direct city assistance with a total value of over $6 million dollars. Assuming the standard 6 percent real estate commission for the sales of these homes alone, that is over $360,000 in commissions. Sounds like favoritism to Delma Mecum and Tienken Realty to me.
Yolanda Flores is on record claiming favoritism, monies going only to friends of the city since McDermont opened. Again, after reviewing the public record, this is just not true. Fifty-eight different checks from the City of Lindsay have been written to Yolanda Flores and Stickers totaling roughly $40,000. That does not count the business Stickers has received from sports teams that regularly participate at McDermont and buy from Stickers. Again, sounds like Mrs. Flores has received favorable treatment.
Timothy Daubert is on record and making claims on a host of subjects within the City of Lindsay. Mr. Daubert, I have found in the public record, has unsuccessfully sued the City of Lindsay six times. Some of the law suits are really ridiculous in nature. Once, it was because a bathroom near the flowrider was propped open with a trash can. Another time because there was no ADA seating for the McDermont basketball courts. The courts have open seating. Another law suit presented to the City by Mr. Daubert was because the Hippo slide and bounce house were not ADA compliant.
Mr. Daubert has unsuccessfully presented to the City of Lindsay six lawsuits and over 100 different complaints of this nature. According to City records, the City Attorney’s fees so far have been roughly $24,000 in defense of these suits. The City did not have the number for the costs of staff time as of today. I suspect the total costs of these useless lawsuits is likely close to $100,000. Seems to me like this money could be better spent on the water fund or some other City expense.
Lastly, as an outsider looking in, I see a City that has completely rebuilt itself in every possible manner. I have learned the City has worked with over 60 different private developers on owner investor projects for housing alone totaling 10’s of millions of dollars in public and private investment. For anyone to claim projects go to a select group of friends is just misinformed and factually inaccurate.
Personally, I have zero business with the City of Lindsay. I have not received 58 checks for business from the City, I am not collecting commissions on over $6 million dollars worth of home loans. I am not wasting my time or the City’s suing because I can’t get into the Hippo Bounce House. I am just a parent who benefits from what Lindsay has to offer. I spend money today in Lindsay that I did not spend in Lindsay eight years ago. Like thousands of other people, I am a friend of the City of Lindsay.
