A NEW, recycled play table has been delivered to Ty Hafan by local Royal Air Force Chief Technician (CT) Dave Roberts. CT Roberts presented a picnic table with built-in play mat, made from recycled plastic to the hospice.

the table, made from plastic bottle tops collected in their thousands for CT Roberts’ project, is ideal for Ty Hafan where, being so close to the salty sea air, traditional wooden furniture tends to deteriorate quickly.

It is the result of months of planning by CT Roberts, after he took on a project that brought together the service community at MOD St Athan, and local primary schools, who rallied to the challenge of recycling plastic milk bottle tops with the purpose of reinventing them into a useful and fun item.

the project began over a year ago, when CT Roberts was inspired to start collecting. the first job was to find a company who could recycle the plastic, and who would be happy to make a donation at the end of the scheme, and British Polythene Industries (bpi) were keen to get involved.

with support from both the Waste Management and Cleansing Section at the Vale of Glamorgan Council and Eco-Schools, CT Roberts then helped secure the involvement of local children in over 20 Vale schools – to fabulous effect! the youngsters took the project to their hearts and soon the tops were coming in thick and fast. By the end of the first term they had achieved 24 black bags filled with tops!

CT Roberts said: “The enthusiasm of the kids was amazing. at Holton Primary School, for example, I met a lad called Joshua who was bringing in tops by the sack full.

“At the end of a year’s collecting, the tops weighed around the same as the average car, which I think is a fantastic achievement!

“I want to let all my young collectors know they really are the ‘tops’,” he added.

“It was a proud moment for all of us at Ty Hafan when the presentation was made, but one that could not have been made possible without the hard work of all the little unsung heroes out there, so a big thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Schools who supported the project were: St Bride’s Major, Y Bont Faen, Pendoylan, LLanilltud Fawr, Rhws, St Nicholas, Llancarfan, Colcot, Ysgol Gwaun y Nant, Cadoxton, All Saints, Palmerston, Holton, Romilly, Ysgol Pen y Garth, St Joseph’s, Albert, Victoria, Sully, Bute Cottage and Cadoxton Nurseries and Dinas Powys Infants School.
