QUESTION: Coastal Halti Dog Head Collar?I just purchased one of these for my beagle mix because someone told me it would help to keep my dog from pulling when I walk her. It was to come with training instructions and it did not. are you to walk in front of the dog? I put it on her and she still freaks out on the leash and still puts part of the leash in her mouth and pulls. she doesn’t even walk…she just jumps around every which way and tugs. I feel it defeats the purpose of the head collar! can anyone tell me how to use this? help…I just want her to walk nicely on the leash so we both can enjoy our walks together!

ANSWER: I’ve used a head collar successfully on my golden for years. It should work for your beagle too. A couple of thoughts.
They do tend to take a few times to get used to the head collar. Try putting the collar on her without the leash and let her get used to it. use positive reinforcement in the form of treats when she lets you put it on her. you might have someone help you. you put on the collar, while the other person gives her treats for cooperating. she may roll and wiggle and try to get it off but after a few sessions she should get used to it.
Once she used to the collar, use treats to get to walk at a heel with you. Hold the leash in your right hand, with her on your left – and slip her small treats with your left hand when she walks alongside you. If she pulls the leash, lags behind, or pulls forward, just stop dead still, ignore her and do nothing. Don’t react at all. Once she starts paying attention to you again by looking at you for guidance, give her treat and begin walking at a heel again, again giving an occasional treat as she walks along. Eventually she will learn that walking alongside is the correct way to walk. Practice every day. Keep the sessions short if she gets frustrated and then gradually make them longer as she gets it.
For treats, use something small and smelly – I use turkey dogs cut into very tiny pieces and put them inside an open plastic baggie inside an open fanny pack while training.
Good luck – this should do the trick.

QUESTION: how big is a (normal) German Shepherds neck?I’m looking at petsmart.com right now, looking for dog collars. I am planing to donate some to Coastal German Shepherd Rescue. But, I have no clue what a normal GSD neck size is! So, if you reply to this, it would mean a lot to me and the dogs (please be accurate with your answers, I don’t want to donate collars that are to big or way to small for the dogs necks.)
and I know that all dogs have different neck sizes, but most dogs of the same breed have the same size. And I’m sure they AT LEAST have 1-2 dogs with the neck size you provided.

QUESTION: Looking for a freeware/shareware or inexpensive CRM software download ?I have started my own K9 Services business, basically pooper scooping, dog walking, and obedience training. I am looking for a good freeware/shareware download or a cheap pay to download for a CRM (customer relationship management) program to basically manage my customers any vendors, generate invoices, track a bit of inventory (leashes, collars, treats, etc.) I have been in the service business a while and worked with a couple of different CRM platforms (Tigerpaw, Coastal). I don’t need anything that big and the more customizeable the better. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be oh so grateful. THANX!!
-
ANSWER: I would go with salesforce.com. They have a free personal edition that is very customizable and easy to use. It is web-based so you don’t have to worry about downloading anything or slowing down your computer. They are the leader in crm right now and have a number of tools that will help you.

QUESTION: (BA points!!) what harness would you recommend?I purchased a Comfort Wrap Adjustable Harness made by Coastal and on the tag it shows a dog with the harness on and the leash is attached at the shoulder. (this style — google.com/imgres?imgurl=http…
Then I took my 12 week old puppy outside (a 22lb Doberman) with the harness and realized that getting him to go in my direction while something has his attention (another dog, a passer by) is not quite as easier than a regular flat collar.
I’ve seen the harnesses that you attach your leash to the chest part + the collar. I think it’s called The Easy Walk Harness. Should I have bought that one?
(google.com/imgres?imgurl=http…
Or would anyone recommend the Gentle Lead instead?
My puppy does not pull insanely bad, but he just got his last boosters and we will begin to walk him in the park and I want to be able to have full control of him. When he gets his eyes on something, it’s hard to break his attention.

ANSWER: May I observe that your dog’s tendency to be distracted is not due to the type of harness/collar/leash used on him. The next time he behaves in this manner, it is best that you avoid pulling him away from his direction. Instead you should sharply command him to a “sit” position and make him “stay” until he calm down, then proceed in the direction of the walk.
Coming back to your other concern, I think the Easy Walk Harness will be the most comfortable for your dog. It is good to start him young on this type of leash so that he will get used to it as he grows.
